I Became the White Moonlight’s Ex-Wife (GL) - Chapter 7
They believed that, given Wen Su’s status, it was impossible for her to play a supporting role for Shen Manhui, as it would severely diminish her value.
And Wen Su had appeared in the Chronicles of Yunling training room, so she must be in the show. If that was the case, there was only one possible explanation:
The role of the female lead, which was originally intended for Shen Manhui, had been stolen by Wen Su.
Shen Manhui’s fans immediately went to her Weibo page to ask questions, and many other netizens went to the Chronicles of Yunling Weibo page to scold the production crew. The comment section was a chaotic mess.
Whether the production team was trying to create buzz or not, the news broke in the morning. It wasn’t until Wen Su was finished with her training and had returned home to collapse on the sofa in the evening that Zhaoyang Pictures slowly posted a clarifying Weibo message:
“@ZhaoyangPictures: The news about our company being acquired is a pure rumor. @WenSu was chosen by the Chronicles of Yunling production team after an audition. Please respect the team’s decision and Miss Wen Su’s hard work.”
This Weibo post indirectly confirmed that Wen Su was indeed in Chronicles of Yunling, but it didn’t specify which role. The netizens were furious.
Chosen after an audition?
That’s not how you lie to children.
“She must have used her connections. They can’t just say Wen Su’s family is too powerful to offend, can they?”
“I just want to know if Wen Su is playing the female lead. The promotional materials said it was Shen Manhui. If they really replaced her with Wen Su, I will never watch another Zhaoyang show again. /smile”
“Don’t watch it, then. It’s better without Shen Manhui. Yunling is supposed to be a great beauty, and Shen Manhui’s face doesn’t fit that. At least I can imagine Wen Su in the role with her looks.”
“Let’s stick to the facts. They said Shen Manhui was going to star when they announced the remake, but now they’re giving us Wen Su. Isn’t that just a scam?”
“The people involved haven’t even said anything. Why are you all getting so worked up? You should use this time to read more books.”
While the internet was in an uproar, Wen Su, still lounging on the sofa, found out what was happening after Chu Jingshu asked her about it.
Still sunk into the sofa, Wen Su scrolled through the comments on the official Weibo account. Her voice was languid and soft from her relaxed state. “I didn’t steal it.”
Chu Jingshu: …
“I mean, why don’t you clarify this? Otherwise, you and the production team will keep getting cursed out.”
Chu Jingshu didn’t believe for a second that Wen Su would use her connections to steal someone else’s role. She just didn’t want to see Wen Su being slandered like this.
It wasn’t out of gratitude toward Wen Su, but because she knew Wen Su would never do such a thing. Wen Su was too proud and disdained those kinds of tactics.
Even though Chu Jingshu knew some of the comments were from paid trolls, it still bothered her to read them, and she started to dislike Shen Manhui a little.
Wen Su didn’t mind. She saw plenty of comments cursing at Shen Manhui, too.
It wasn’t that she had a high opinion of herself when she thought Shen Manhui was a plain “little bean sprout.” The public thought so, too. Calling Shen Manhui a plain “little bean sprout” was a compliment. Among actresses, Shen Manhui’s face was nothing special. She was fine for playing a cute girl next door, and she could even gain a lot of fans that way, but she had played eight idol dramas, and in six of them, she was a great beauty, which was very awkward to watch.
In the original story, Shen Manhui’s script choices were often criticized. She would always choose roles as a great beauty even though her looks couldn’t support it. It wasn’t until her rebirth that she used her superb acting skills to carry the role of Yunling. This caused her popularity to skyrocket, and she became a true method actor.
She was also curious about how superb Shen Manhui’s acting would be after her rebirth, that many viewers would exclaim, “She is Yunling.” When she read the original novel, she always pictured Chu Jingshu as Yunling.
Having rested enough, Wen Su put her phone away and got up to go upstairs, shower, and study her role. She said indifferently, “It doesn’t matter. I only care about filming.”
Chu Jingshu was taken aback. She watched Wen Su walk past her, catching a faint, fresh scent. By the time she snapped back to reality, Wen Su had already gone upstairs to her bedroom.
Chu Jingshu stood there in a daze for a moment before she started to laugh.
Wen Su saw things so clearly. It was she who was overthinking things.
…
Late at night
After showering, Wen Su was buried in her script. Before filming officially began, she needed to fully understand the script.
When her eyes started to feel tired, Wen Su checked the time. It was already past one in the morning. She put the script away and decided to go to bed.
She had to wake up early tomorrow, and if she didn’t sleep now, she wouldn’t have any time to rest.
Wen Su had just reached her bed when she heard a “thud” outside her bedroom. She froze and decided to go out and see what happened.
After working late into the night, Chu Jingshu felt hungry, so she went downstairs to look for food in the refrigerator. She didn’t see where she was going and kicked the railing on the second floor. The pain made her gasp, and she leaned against the railing, waiting for the pain to subside.
Suddenly, she heard her door open behind her. Chu Jingshu’s body stiffened. She turned around and saw Wen Su standing in the doorway. The backlighting made it impossible for her to see Wen Su’s expression.
Chu Jingshu blurted out, “Why aren’t you in bed yet?”
Shouldn’t I be asking you that?
She didn’t answer Chu Jingshu’s question. She said directly, “What are you doing?”
Chu Jingshu gave a gentle smile. “I was hungry. I accidentally kicked the railing on the way downstairs.”
“You’re eating at this hour?” Wen Su frowned. “And not sleeping?”
Chu Jingshu lied without changing her expression. “I can’t sleep on an empty stomach.”
Wen Su looked at her thoughtfully and nodded slightly. “You can turn on the lights. We don’t have a shortage of electricity.” At this hour, everyone was asleep. Turning on the lights wouldn’t disturb anyone.
Chu Jingshu smiled and nodded. “Yes, I’ll be sure to turn on the lights next time.”
Wen Su’s frown deepened, but because of the backlighting, Chu Jingshu couldn’t see it clearly. She just thought Wen Su was observing her, and her smile became even softer.
After a moment of silence, Wen Su had to say, “…Go to bed early.”
Chu Jingshu smiled sweetly. “You too. Good night.”
It wasn’t until Wen Su went back to her room and closed the door, and the light from under her door disappeared, that Chu Jingshu let out a sigh of relief.
The pain was not so bad now. She wanted to grab a bite and get back to work.
As she raised her leg to go downstairs, Chu Jingshu looked at the light switch. After a moment of hesitation, she turned on the staircase light. The soft light immediately illuminated the staircase and even reached the kitchen.
Chu Jingshu pursed her lips, and a faint smile appeared in her eyes.
She had thought all of Wen Su’s attention was on her family, and that she was just a stranger under the same roof. She never expected that Wen Su would show a little bit of concern for her.
Wen Su considered this an isolated incident, but then twice she accidentally fell asleep in the study until dawn, and both times she caught Chu Jingshu working late. Chu Jingshu said she would go to bed soon both times, but her mental state was visibly getting worse. Even makeup couldn’t hide the dark circles under her eyes. One time, she even dozed off during breakfast.
The third time she ran into her, Wen Su gave Chu Jingshu a meaningful look. “This is the last time.”
Chu Jingshu understood her meaning. She still smiled sweetly. “I’m really going to sleep now. You should go to sleep, too.”
Wen Su simply gave the working computer a thoughtful look, turned around, and went back to her room to sleep.
Watching Wen Su go back to her room and close the door, Chu Jingshu’s heart felt warm, and she found it a little funny.
It wasn’t until the next night that Chu Jingshu realized Wen Su hadn’t been joking.
After “accidentally” falling asleep in the study until dawn again, Wen Su tiptoed past Chu Jingshu’s room. She was not surprised to find the light on.
Wen Su frowned and knocked on the door. As expected, she heard some rustling inside. After a moment, the door opened, and a nervous-looking Chu Jingshu in a wine-red silk robe peered out at her.
Anyone would feel guilty after being caught staying up late multiple times, especially since Chu Jingshu and Wen Su were partners on the verge of “ending their collaboration,” and yet Wen Su wouldn’t let it go.
After the guilt passed, Chu Jingshu blurted out, “Are you checking up on me?”
Wen Su looked over her shoulder and saw the computer still on her desk. She frowned tightly. “You’re staying up late again.”
Chu Jingshu was startled. She instinctively gave a sincere smile. “I’m going to bed right now.”
This was the fourth time Wen Su had heard that. She was not going to fall for it. She pushed past Chu Jingshu and walked straight to the computer on the desk.
Chu Jingshu had never met someone so bossy and unreasonable. She was so stunned that she forgot to stop her. She didn’t know whether to be angry or to laugh. But she could clearly feel that Wen Su was concerned about her; it was just a very overbearing way of showing it.
Wen Su operated the computer. After saving all the files and closing them one by one, Chu Jingshu finally came to her senses. She rushed forward to stop her. “Wait, I need these for tomorrow’s board meeting. I’m not done yet.”
“Go to bed now. If you’re not done, postpone the meeting. Do you have to do everything yourself? Are your other employees useless?” Wen Su didn’t give her a chance to get close to the computer. She saved the files and shut it down.
Chu Jingshu had never met such a domineering and unreasonable person. She didn’t know whether to be angry or to laugh. But she could clearly feel that Wen Su was concerned about her; it was just a very overbearing way of showing it.
After making sure the computer was completely shut down, Wen Su turned and glared at the startled Chu Jingshu. “Don’t take your health for granted just because you’re young. The company won’t collapse. Why are you taking everything on yourself? Are your employees just sitting around doing nothing?”
“If you have any problems, just say so. You are a daughter-in-law of the Wen family. If anyone is giving you a hard time, they’re messing with the Wen family.”
How could a CEO be pushed to this point? Even though the Chu family only had the two sisters left, everyone knew that Chu Jingshu was married to Wen Su. Even if they wanted to take advantage of the situation, they had to consider the Wen family’s approval.
Not only did Wen Su’s parents dote on Chu Jingshu, but even the former head of the family, Grandpa Wen, was very fond of her. If it weren’t to ease Grandpa Wen’s mind, the original owner wouldn’t have offered to marry Chu Jingshu in the first place.
Chu Jingshu’s heart trembled. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say. It would be a lie to say she wasn’t touched. Her parents had passed away suddenly, and she hadn’t even been able to properly mourn them because she had to take care of her sister and shoulder all of the Chu family’s affairs, all while fending off her opportunistic relatives.
She had thought about asking the Wen family for help, but she quickly dismissed the idea. She and Wen Su had been like strangers for years, so she couldn’t bring herself to ask.
But Wen Su had. Because she had been staying up late for a few days. Chu Jingshu suddenly felt that her life wasn’t so difficult after all.
Chu Jingshu lowered her head without saying a word. Just as Wen Su was about to continue, Chu Jingshu looked up, her eyes slightly red, and Wen Su instinctively closed her mouth.
“Thank you,” Chu Jingshu said with a gentle smile. Her smile was more genuine than it had ever been. “I will.”
A loud alarm blared in Wen Su’s mind. She forced her face to stay blank and said, “Then go to sleep.” She silently recited the twenty-four character core socialist values three times before she calmed down.
Seeing Wen Su’s expressionless face, Chu Jingshu found it a little cute for the first time.
Chu Jingshu turned and sat on the edge of the bed, smiling. “Okay, okay, I’m going to bed now.”
Looking at a beauty like this for too long would make her lose control. Wen Su discreetly looked away, her voice as calm as ever. “That’s for the best. Go to bed early.”
After leaving Chu Jingshu’s room, Wen Su felt better.
Watching Wen Su leave and close the door, Chu Jingshu smiled faintly and shook her head. She accidentally glanced at the computer monitor, which was still on, and walked over to turn it off.
Unexpectedly, the door behind her was suddenly pushed open. Chu Jingshu had a bad feeling and turned her head to meet Wen Su’s mocking gaze.
“I knew you wouldn’t be a good girl and go to sleep,” Wen Su’s lips curled into a smirk. “Now, go sleep in my room.”
Chu Jingshu: …
Chu Jingshu: I can explain!
Author’s Note:
I need to clarify something. Before this chapter, Chu Jingshu did not have feelings for Wen Su. That’s just her personality. She felt guilty because she and Wen Su were not yet divorced, but her secretary was acting like she wanted to pursue her in front of Wen Su. She was afraid Wen Su would misunderstand her as someone who doesn’t follow the rules, so she felt guilty.
