I Ran Away After Transmigrating as a Wealthy Daughter-in-Law - Chapter 2
Jian Guangtao’s face was as black as a pot. He simply felt that something was off. From what he knew of Jiang Pan, she would never agree to a divorce so readily unless there was a big payoff for her.
Was she planning something bigger?
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously, scrutinizing Jiang Pan. “You didn’t even read it before you signed. Aren’t you afraid of getting the short end of the stick?”
Jiang Pan met his gaze calmly. “None of that is important to me. Don’t worry, once I leave this house, I won’t come back to bother you or Jian Yue.” She sighed, then offered a piece of heartfelt advice. “When Jian Yue wakes up, please tell her to be more careful in the future. Someone like me… is not worth it.”
Jian Guangtao: “…?”
Something isn’t right. Had she suddenly gained such a clear sense of self-awareness?
Jian Dad assumed Jiang Pan was just putting on an act. He scoffed, “You don’t need to pretend with me. Your little tricks might work on Yueyue, but I’m telling you, don’t waste your time trying to fool me.” He gave a look of disdain. “Now, I doubt they’ll even work on my foolish daughter anymore.”
Jiang Pan thought to herself, The foolish girl should have wised up a long time ago.
Jian Guangtao picked up the divorce agreement. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Once you sign this, there’s no going back.”
“Yes, I’m very clear on that,” Jiang Pan said politely. “Just let me know when we need to go to the civil affairs bureau to file the divorce. I’ll be there on time.” She paused, then added, “The sooner, the better, so we don’t have any complications.”
For a moment, Jian Guangtao was stunned, unable to believe this was the same Jiang Pan he knew.
Jiang Pan realized her words and actions were completely un-“Jiang Pan”-like. The original owner was an extreme opportunist and would never agree to anything so easily if she didn’t get what she wanted.
But Jiang Pan truly didn’t want to be “Jiang Pan.”
Her moral compass wouldn’t allow her to be a scumbag.
Besides, there was no rule that a transmigrator had to act like the original owner. If she did, wouldn’t she be walking right into a death trap?
Jiang Pan cleared her throat. “Uncle, from today on, I am no longer the person I used to be. I think you deserve to know that.”
Jian Guangtao’s face was a picture of disbelief, and he let out a mocking laugh. “Really?”
Jiang Pan gave a sincere smile. “Yes. I’ll go pack my things now.”
Jian Guangtao’s laughter grew louder. “What things are you going to pack? Everything you own belongs to my family.”
“Oh, right,” Jiang Pan agreed. “You’re absolutely correct.”
Unlike the original owner, Jiang Pan had no desire for money or vanity. She took her ID card and her copy of the divorce agreement. Then she looked at the clothes she was wearing. “Um, if I take these clothes off and walk out the door, it’ll be a bit embarrassing. The police might even arrest me. More importantly, it would be bad for the Jian family’s reputation. So, can I just wear them out?”
Jian Dad: “…”
At this moment, Jian Guangtao thought this Jiang Pan was insane. She used to treat his family like an ATM, and now what kind of performance was this?
“You’re not saying no, so I’ll take that as a yes,” Jiang Pan said with a polite smile. Then, to Jian Guangtao’s utter shock, she seriously wrote an IOU for the clothes she was wearing.
Jian Dad was no longer just shocked; he was a little disoriented. He held the IOU, his mouth twitching.
What was she up to? He was shocked and bewildered.
Jiang Pan felt pleased with herself. She had signed the divorce papers and written an IOU. She could leave with her head held high now, right?
Still, she felt a little guilty toward Jian Yue.
After all, she had just slept with her.
Jiang Pan was a relatively traditional person. In her view of love, if you did it with someone, you had to be responsible for them.
So, she felt she had wronged Jian Yue.
But this wrongdoing was inevitable. As a transmigrator, she had taken on a terrible character and brought pain to Jian Yue.
Only by leaving could she do what was best for both of them.
Before she left, Jiang Pan wanted to catch a glimpse of the girl she had inexplicably slept with. But Jian Guangtao’s hateful glare was like a knife, so she consoled herself. It’s better not to see her. If she wakes up, you won’t be able to leave.
And so, Jiang Pan walked out without a moment’s hesitation.
Jian Guangtao was utterly bewildered. After a long pause, he asked the driver standing next to him, “She just… left?”
The driver looked confused. “Didn’t you tell her to leave?”
Jian Guangtao frowned, lost in thought. He looked at the IOU in his hand, then at the signed divorce agreement.
Jiang Pan’s change was too drastic. He needed a moment to process.
Seeing him silent, the driver cautiously asked, “Should I go after her?”
“Chase her for what?” Jian Dad scoffed. No matter what Jiang Pan was plotting, the divorce agreement was signed. What kind of trouble could she cause now? He looked down at the signed paper again and smiled. “My foolish daughter won’t have to suffer anymore. Chase her? Ha! I should be lighting firecrackers to celebrate!”
Getting into a taxi outside the Jian family villa, Jiang Pan was still in a daze. No one could stay calm and collected after something as scientifically impossible as transmigrating.
Especially not when you transmigrate into a scumbag. At this thought, Jiang Pan frowned. She truly did not want to be the original owner’s scapegoat.
And at this moment, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was a deadbeat who had slept with someone’s daughter and then fled.
Jiang Pan sighed in frustration. She didn’t know if she could ever go back. If not, what would happen next?
In the original plot, the owner didn’t sign the divorce agreement; she just continued her self-destructive path. Now that she had signed it, would the plot change?
If it did, did that mean the rest of the story would change, too?
And if it changed, could she live a quiet, peaceful life?
Jiang Pan was an orphan who grew up with the help of her community. With the support of the government, she went to a prestigious university, moved to a big city, and was accepted into a master’s program. She then began working on research with her professor.
She had won countless awards and was dedicated to her career, willing to work day and night without rest.
She never expected that her overwork would lead to her sudden death and transmigration into a book.
Jiang Pan stared blankly out the car window, lost in thought.
Maybe, from another perspective, she was lucky. She was alive in this world, with a new identity.
No matter what, being alive was what mattered.
The taxi driver asked where she was going twice before Jiang Pan came to.
The question stumped her. Yes, where could she go? Where should she go?
Based on the original owner’s memories, she had no one besides the Jian family and a few fake friends.
The original owner’s behavior had left her with no one she could truly trust.
She had even cut ties with all her relatives.
This woman truly was just as the author described—useless except for her face.
“Miss, where are you going?”
The driver asked again. Jiang Pan frowned. After a long moment, she said, “Sir, why don’t you decide?”
The driver: “?”
Jiang Pan realized how foolish her words sounded. She quickly apologized and thought for a moment. “How about I just get out here?”
“I was just waiting for you to tell me where to go. I haven’t even started driving yet.” The driver’s expression made it seem like Jiang Pan had just cost him a hundred million dollars.
Jiang Pan: “…”
Jiang Pan got out of the car and sat on the curb, watching the cars go by. The streets were wet from the recent rain, and the early spring wind made her shiver. But a little cold was good for clearing her head. She sniffled, grateful the driver hadn’t started the meter, because she didn’t have a single cent on her.
Looking at the unfamiliar streets, Jiang Pan’s frown deepened, and her eyes grew more lost.
Mainly, this was because she was now cold and hungry.
After all that chaos last night, she was starving. Now, her eyes were unfocused from the hunger.
Right now, finding a meal was the most important thing in her life.
Jian Yue woke up around noon, her body feeling like it had been taken apart.
She remembered what had happened last night—Jiang Pan had been acting like she was on something.
Something?
Jian Yue remembered now. There had been something in the coffee. So, had Jiang Pan also consumed it?
But why would she?
And if she had, then why did she let that other Alpha into her room?
Jian Yue’s mind was clear now. Thinking about it, her love for Jiang Pan began to fade.
She quickly got dressed and left the bedroom. Jiang Pan had done so many things to harm the Jian family, and she could choose to forgive that. But for this incident, she needed an explanation.
Otherwise…
“What? She left?” Jian Yue was shocked when she heard what Jian Guangtao said. “And she signed the divorce agreement?”
Jian Guangtao was happy. “She was smart enough to know when to quit.” He urged Jian Yue to sign her copy. “Take it to the civil affairs bureau to get it legalized and effective right away. Only then will your father be at peace.”
Jian Yue didn’t say anything. Based on what she knew of Jiang Pan, this was unbelievable.
“Dad, did you threaten her?” Jian Yue’s eyes were filled with confusion.
“Do you think I’m that kind of person?” Jian Guangtao frowned. “If I wanted to do something to her, she’d already be dead a dozen times over.”
Jian Yue pursed her lips. That was true. And besides, if someone threatened Jiang Pan once, she would come back at them ten or a hundred times over.
“What’s wrong? You’re not still hung up on her, are you? Are you going to wait until she takes all our family’s assets before you give up on her?” Jian Guangtao asked, seeing Jian Yue’s serious expression.
Jian Yue felt guilty. “No, Dad, I’m not.”
Jian Yue looked dejected. She just didn’t understand. Jiang Pan had pursued her, so were all the sweet nothings and promises just for show? She couldn’t comprehend how someone could say they loved her and yet hurt her again and again.
As for Jiang Pan signing the divorce agreement, Jian Yue didn’t know how to feel. Maybe she should be grateful that Jiang Pan was so decisive. Otherwise, she was afraid she would have been soft on her again.
“Look, she even wrote an IOU before she left,” Jian Dad said, holding it out to her.
“An IOU for what?” Jian Yue took it. At first glance, she blurted out, “This isn’t her handwriting.”
Jian Dad’s eyebrow twitched. “I watched her write it.”
Jian Yue looked closer. “It really doesn’t look like it.”
She didn’t think much of it, though, because the content of the IOU made her wonder if Jiang Pan had gone insane overnight. Writing an IOU for a set of clothes wasn’t something the Jiang Pan she knew would ever do.
The Jiang Pan she knew was not this humorous.
Jian Yue stared at the IOU, lost in thought. A moment later, she ripped it to shreds and tossed it in the trash can. “Dad, I’m a little tired. I’m going back to sleep.”
“You just woke up! You haven’t had breakfast. It’s almost lunchtime. Aren’t you going to eat something…”
As a loving father, he was worried about his daughter’s health and kept muttering. Jian Yue just waved her hand and went back to her room.
Jiang Pan’s limbs were heavy. Besides being physically and mentally exhausted, she wanted to find a warm place to sit.
She took two steps and was startled by a car horn. Before she could react, she heard laughter.
A head popped out of the car window. It was a beautiful woman with bright red lips and a brilliant smile. “Where are you going, Mr. Son-in-Law?”
Jiang Pan squinted. Based on the original owner’s memories, she knew who this was.
She slowly curled her lips into a smile. Looks like she was going to get a meal after all, and it was being delivered right to her.
