I Ran Away After Transmigrating as a Wealthy Daughter-in-Law - Chapter 3
The person who showed up was one of the original owner’s fake friends, named Li Qi. She was a true heiress and, in the ABO world, a Beta.
In short, she was a wealthy socialite with too much time on her hands.
She wouldn’t do anything as horrible as the original owner, but she loved to get in on any and all drama. She was a classic busybody.
If it weren’t for Jian Yue, an impoverished Alpha son-in-law like Jiang Pan wouldn’t even be on her radar.
Li Qi’s contemptuous gaze landed on Jiang Pan, but she didn’t care. After all, she wasn’t the original owner.
“Well, I was just about to look for you, and here you are,” Jiang Pan said with a smile as she approached the car.
“Looking for me?” Li Qi smiled, then changed the subject. “I heard an Alpha went to see your wife last night?”
Jiang Pan’s eyes narrowed for a moment. The original owner’s disgusting act must have already been gossip among these rich heiresses.
After all, the original owner was someone they had always looked down on and loved to see as a joke.
“Yeah,” Jiang Pan went along with it, then suggested, “I was just about to talk to you about it. Why don’t I get in, and we can find a place where I can tell you all about it?”
No one loves gossip more than a busybody. Li Qi immediately told Jiang Pan to get in.
As the car started, Jiang Pan maintained her basic politeness while sneering to herself, letting the other woman make fun of her all the way.
When they arrived at a restaurant, she still maintained basic courtesy. After all, she needed to fill her stomach before she had the strength to insult anyone.
Seeing Jiang Pan stuffing her face, Li Qi couldn’t help but ask, “Did the Jian family not feed you?”
Jiang Pan replied, “If the Jian family didn’t feed me, I’d have starved to death a long time ago. The person you’d be talking to would be a ghost.”
Li Qi: “…”
That sent a shiver down her spine. Rolling her eyes, Li Qi smiled contemptuously and reached for the plastic bag by Jiang Pan’s hand.
“Don’t touch that. It’s a personal item. Touching it without my permission is against the law,” Jiang Pan warned her kindly. The bag held the divorce agreement, and she didn’t want someone with a loose mouth seeing it.
Li Qi’s hand froze in mid-air. She was annoyed but didn’t show it. She pulled her hand back and took a sip of water, scoffing. “Illegal? Ha. What an A-plus student, exactly what Miss Jian likes.”
Jiang Pan focused on her food and ignored her.
Seeing that she wasn’t getting a reaction, Li Qi cut to the chase. “Does Jian Yue know you were the one who brought that Alpha to the house?”
Jiang Pan looked at her and answered with a question. “You know that person, too, don’t you?” Without waiting for Li Qi to respond, she continued, “That’s illegal, you know? If I ‘accidentally’ let that slip, what would happen to your reputation as the Li family’s heiress?”
Li Qi froze, then grew upset. “Jiang Pan, if anyone’s in trouble, it’s you! What does that have to do with me?”
Jiang Pan shrugged and smiled. “Yeah, I’m the mastermind. You and the others are accomplices. If the police get involved, do you think you’d be able to get away scot-free?”
Li Qi’s face, which had been so pleasant, fell immediately. “I think you’re crazy and need to see a doctor! Who the hell is an accomplice?! Don’t you dare slander me! I only heard about this from someone else! You disgusting person, bringing someone else home on Valentine’s Day to sleep with your own wife. You’re not just sick; you’re a monster!”
Jiang Pan looked at her furious face and thought that the original owner did deserve to die for what she did. Composing herself, she said, “Don’t be mad. I was just kidding.”
“You idiot,” Li Qi gritted her teeth. Her expression softened a bit, but she still looked grim.
While she wasn’t afraid of a little trouble, she was afraid of her dad. If her dad found out, he would lecture her for days.
Her dad had been a close friend of Jian Yue’s father for years. Even though she had nothing to do with it, she was an observer who had come to watch the show.
Damn it, I’m kind of disgusted with myself now, Li Qi thought angrily.
It’s all Jiang Pan’s fault! she cursed in her head again.
On second thought, Li Qi couldn’t shake the feeling that the Jiang Pan in front of her seemed a little different.
She wasn’t as servile as before. Instead, she had an unfamiliar coldness and seemed tough to mess with.
After eating her fill, Jiang Pan decided to show her gratitude by asking Li Qi for a thousand dollars.
Li Qi was stunned. She looked at Jiang Pan as if she were an imbecile. “Borrow a thousand dollars?”
Jiang Pan was serious. “If you don’t have cash on you, Miss Li, you can go to the ATM. I’ll wait here for you.”
Li Qi: “…”
The request came so suddenly, and for a moment, she was filled with questions.
She quickly recovered and scoffed. “Are you kidding? You’re a son-in-law in the Jian family. You can’t possibly need to borrow a thousand dollars, can you?” Without waiting for an answer, she added mockingly, “I guess it’s not easy being a son-in-law, especially when you come from different social classes. I understand.”
“Since you’re so understanding, are you going to lend me a thousand dollars?” Jiang Pan asked calmly.
Li Qi paused, then laughed. She took out a card. “There’s ten million in here. The password is [password]. Are you brave enough to take it, Ms. Daughter-in-Law?”
Jiang Pan raised an eyebrow, took it without hesitation, and put it in her pocket. “Thanks.”
Li Qi: “…”
Jiang Pan looked at her as if she were crazy. “You’re not going to try to get it back, are you?” Without waiting for her to speak, she said, “What a silly question. The heiress of the great Mingtai Group wouldn’t be stingy about ten million. What would people say?”
Li Qi: “…”
Li Qi’s face turned as black as a pot, her eyes like daggers. She said in a warning tone, “That’s ten million, not a thousand. Jiang Pan, how dare you?”
Jiang Pan smiled faintly. “Since you, Miss Li, gave it to me, I’d be looking down on you if I didn’t take it.”
Li Qi gnashed her teeth and cursed. “Jiang Pan, what are you playing at? Don’t think you’re hot stuff just because you married into the Jian family! What are you without them?! How dare you put on airs in front of me?! Any one of the disgusting things you’ve done to the Jians is enough to land you in jail for life.”
Jiang Pan let out a small laugh. “You’re right.” She slowly looked up at Li Qi, a coldness in her eyes. “You’re all disgusting, every last one of you. And about last night’s disgusting affair, you can’t say you weren’t a part of it. If I go to jail, you’re going down with me.”
Li Qi’s face fell again. She said sharply, “Are you threatening me?” She quickly added in a furious tone, “Last night’s incident has nothing to do with me! If you try to frame me again, I swear to God I’ll kill you!”
Jiang Pan put on a pitiful expression. “Oh, I’m so scared.” She then waved her hand and said, “Officer, this person is threatening to kill me!”
Li Qi looked around in a mix of panic and confusion, but there was no officer to be found.
She turned back to curse again, only to find that Jiang Pan had disappeared.
Li Qi: “…???”
Jian Yue stared at the divorce agreement for a long time before she finally picked up a pen and signed it.
She walked out of the bedroom and placed the agreement on Jian Guangtao’s desk.
Jian Guangtao was both shocked and delighted. “You signed it?”
Jian Yue’s mood was low. “Yeah.”
Seeing her like this, Jian Guangtao sighed. “Yueyue, you know what kind of person she is better than I do. Your father just hopes you won’t hurt yourself over someone who isn’t worth it. Do you understand?”
Jian Yue said nothing. She and Jiang Pan had been together since their sophomore year of college and got married right after graduation. They’d been together for almost seven years and married for nearly three. She thought they would overcome the seven-year itch and the eight-year pain, the nine-year regrets, and have a ten-year reunion before growing old together.
But she never expected Jiang Pan to become so terrifying. In the two years they’d been married, she had made so many mistakes. Every time, she would cry and beg for forgiveness, but then she would do it again. After a while, it felt like a pattern, a cycle of sincere apologies and sincere mistakes.
Maybe, from the beginning, she was wrong. Jiang Pan had only ever loved herself.
Jian Yue collected herself and stopped thinking. She looked at Jian Guangtao. “Dad, I’m sorry.” She forced a small smile. “Let’s find a time to get the divorce finalized.”
Jian Guangtao beamed. “That’s my good girl.” He picked up the agreement with satisfaction. “I’ll have someone contact her right away.”
Just as Jian Guangtao was about to give the order, Jian Yue suddenly remembered something. “She didn’t take her phone with her.”
Jian Guangtao just said, “Finding one person isn’t difficult for your dad.”
Jian Yue forced a smile. “Yes, my dad is the best.”
Jian Guangtao scoffed. “What’s the point of being the best when my own daughter won’t listen to her old man?” He sighed. “This is what happens when you don’t listen to the wisdom of your elders.”
Jian Yue truly regretted it now. She could forgive Jiang Pan for stealing company data to sell or for embezzling company money, but what she did on Valentine’s Day—using drugs to put her in heat and bringing another Alpha in—she could never, ever forgive.
It was too disgusting. Jian Yue felt like she was going to throw up just thinking about it.
If Jiang Pan hadn’t given her a permanent mark last night, Jian Yue would have had her thrown in jail.
Thinking of the mark, Jian Yue instinctively touched the scent gland on her neck.
Before, Jiang Pan had only ever given her temporary marks. Why did she give her a permanent one last night?
Jiang Pan was always so cautious. Even when she made a mistake, she was good at hiding it. Maybe last night she had a sudden change of heart and rushed to save her?
And then, worried that Jian Yue would cause trouble for her once she was sober, she gave her a permanent mark?
As she thought this, Jian Yue’s mood soured again.
Jiang Pan always chose to do what was most beneficial to her, even in their relationship.
Right now, Jian Yue felt as disgusted and repulsed as if she had swallowed a fly.
The thought of sending Jiang Pan to jail had returned.
The city felt a bit chilly at night. Jiang Pan sat in the train station square, feeling the cool breeze and watching people come and go. Everyone had a destination, but she had none.
She had gone to the bank immediately with Li Qi’s card and withdrew the maximum of 50,000 RMB from the teller and another 20,000 RMB from the ATM. She then bought a phone and a new SIM card with the same number she had in her original world.
Next, she used her ID to open a bank account, because Li Qi’s card was a privilege for the wealthy. She then transferred all the money from Li Qi’s card into her own.
Jiang Pan had always wondered why in TV shows, rich people could just give someone a bank card and the money in it was theirs.
Now, as she stared at the two cards in her hand, she was still confused, but it was clearly a bug allowed to exist in TV shows and novels. After all, who wouldn’t want the feeling of a rich person throwing a card at them?
Having ten million on her didn’t feel real. She felt like she had received ill-gotten gains and was about to be chased by Li Qi.
But Li Qi’s family was one of the most prominent in C City. They wouldn’t chase her for ten million, as wealthy people knew their mistakes came at too high a cost.
She was found by people from the Jian family when she went to buy water. Jiang Pan paused for a moment, then understood.
The person told her to be at the civil affairs bureau at nine tomorrow morning.
Jiang Pan readily agreed. After the person left, she thought about how she had changed the novel’s plot and was now on a different path. It should affect the rest of the story.
If nothing else, as long as she could live a comfortable life, she would be satisfied.
Jiang Pan found a hotel and went to sleep.
She was so tired. It had only been a day since she transmigrated, but it felt like a lifetime.
She had a dream, a dream of going back. But then she suddenly saw a flash of herself drowning in a ditch, and she woke up with a start.
Jiang Pan opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling for a long time before sitting up.
She arrived at the civil affairs bureau at eight. She didn’t like being late, especially not when it came to a matter that would free Jian Yue from a monster.
By being so proactive, she hoped the Jian family father and daughter would be merciful and not press charges against her.
At nine, Jian Yue arrived. She didn’t spare Jiang Pan a single glance until all the paperwork was done and they were out of the building.
“Good. You should be this decisive and cold,” Jiang Pan applauded the beautiful woman in her heart.
Jian Yue told herself not to have any lingering feelings or regret. She maintained a forced cold indifference, but her heart ached.
A relationship of over six years, gone in an instant.
And what was with Jiang Pan’s loving, gentle smile?
Jian Yue, who had felt some lingering affection, now only wanted to leave quickly. She sped up her pace on her heels.
But because she was walking too fast, she twisted her ankle and was about to fall when a hand suddenly grabbed her waist.
“Be careful,” Jiang Pan said with concern. “Did you twist your ankle?”
Jian Yue steadied herself and turned to scold her, but she was met with Jiang Pan’s clear, bright eyes.
This was the first thing she noticed. Jiang Pan’s gaze was different from before.
Is this an act again? Her acting has improved a lot, was her second thought.
She quickly pulled Jiang Pan’s hand away and said coldly, “I don’t need you to help me.” Then she got into her car.
Watching Jian Yue’s retreating figure, Jiang Pan subconsciously touched the scent gland on her neck. It was a mysterious organ for her.
She remembered the scene in the novel where the original owner’s gland was dug out and fed to a dog by Jian Yue. A shiver ran down her neck at the thought.
She couldn’t stay here anymore, either.
Honestly, she really wanted to say “I’m sorry” to Jian Yue.
But there was no good opportunity.
A sudden commotion got her attention. She turned to see a young couple fighting outside the civil affairs bureau, about to get physical.
Jiang Pan immediately rushed forward to break up the fight.
In the car, Jian Yue’s face was ashen. She felt like Jiang Pan had a major illness—a scumbag who was also gentle and had a hint of warmth. What the hell?
She glanced out the window, a habit, and saw Jiang Pan in front of the civil affairs bureau, breaking up a fight.
Jian Yue: “?”
When did she become so helpful?
