I Ran Away After Transmigrating as a Wealthy Daughter-in-Law - Chapter 5
After the buzz about the divorce died down, Jian Yue drove to a private hospital.
Her doctor and good friend, Yin Li, looked shocked after listening to her. “Remove the mark?” Without waiting for an answer, she shook her head. “I’m afraid not.”
“Why?” Jian Yue asked, confused. “Didn’t you say it could be removed?”
“It can be removed, but only a portion of it. Judging by your physical condition, I’m sorry to say you aren’t a good candidate,” Yin Li explained seriously. “If we forcefully remove it, you’ll suffer from severe stress, which could be life-threatening.”
Jian Yue was momentarily stunned. “…Is there any other way? What about removing the gland?”
“Removing your gland?” Yin Li looked exasperated. “How did you even come up with that idea? Do you have a death wish?”
Jian Yue sighed. “You don’t understand. Just thinking about it makes me feel like I swallowed a fly.”
Yin Li understood completely. She had never liked Jiang Pan from the start, not because of her background, but because her perfect love for Jian Yue always felt fake.
But Jian Yue wouldn’t listen. She was blinded by love and dove in head first, determined to love no one but her.
Yin Li thought for a moment and said, “For now, you should carry some extra-strength inhibitors. It’s the safest option. Don’t worry, I’ll do my best to find an Alpha whose pheromones are a very close match to Jiang Pan’s.”
Jian Yue knew the chances of that were slim to none, but she still thanked her friend for her comfort.
Yin Li pursed her lips, hesitating. “You know, if you’re permanently marked, there’s a very high chance you’ll get pregnant.”
Jian Yue frowned, her eyes dimming. She didn’t know what to say.
“Oh, don’t be scared. If you get pregnant, just have the baby,” Yin Li said in a light tone. “If you don’t want it, you can give it to me. I’ll raise it.”
Jian Yue still didn’t speak. She didn’t want to get pregnant. That was the only thing she was certain of.
Yin Li fell silent. She and Jian Yue had been childhood friends. As a Beta, she had become a close friend with an Omega, and she knew Omegas were rare and delicate. She always took great care of Jian Yue.
Since childhood, she knew Jian Yue was kind and simple-hearted, like a one-celled organism. She used to jokingly warn her about being emotionally manipulated.
She never expected the joke to become a reality. This time, Jian Yue had been truly wronged and heartbroken.
Yin Li was so angry that Jian Yue had decided to let Jiang Pan off the hook.
Yin Li was also upset that as Jian Yue’s friend, she didn’t get the chance to teach that scumbag a lesson. She felt it was a real shame.
Li Qi was also furious with Jiang Pan. She couldn’t believe Jiang Pan had just taken ten million dollars from her. She had to get even and teach her a lesson. She had to show her that ten million dollars doesn’t just fall from the sky.
Of course, Li Qi knew she couldn’t make a big scene. That shameless Jiang Pan wasn’t worth the risk of a lawsuit.
She found a few of her usual friends and started brainstorming how to teach Jiang Pan a lesson.
As they talked, Li Qi grew more and more indignant. She slammed her hand on the table and cursed Jiang Pan, calling her every name in the book.
Li Qi had a pretty clear understanding of herself; she knew she wasn’t a good person.
But she would never truly harm someone. She had a bottom line.
And Jiang Pan was terrifyingly without one. She couldn’t believe that in the end, Jian Yue still let her go.
Li Qi felt Jian Yue was being incredibly weak.
If it had been her, she would have thrown that backwoods woman to the ground just as easily as she had put her on a pedestal.
She had to make Jiang Pan understand that if you wanted to be a scumbag, you had to be prepared to pay the price.
After a few days of deep thought, Jiang Pan finally made a decision. She was going to go to the original owner’s home and visit her parents.
After all, if she was going to live in this body, she had to give something back.
In this world, there was a law of conservation of energy. You couldn’t just take without giving.
So, she bought a lot of gifts and got ready to take the public bus back to the village.
However, as soon as she left the supermarket, she was grabbed by two strong men and dragged into a small alley.
Her gifts fell all over the ground. Jiang Pan felt flustered and a little scared. She tried to scream for help, but they threatened her.
Jiang Pan decided to listen for now, thinking she would act when the opportunity arose. She bravely questioned them, “What do you want?”
She thought it was a robbery. It was broad daylight; how could they be so brazen?
“Do you want money or…”
“We don’t want money, and we’re not after you,” the taller, muscular man said, cutting her off and clenching his fists. “Sorry, ma’am, but we’ve been hired. We’re here to beat you up.”
“Brother, our mom taught us not to hit women,” the other man said, grabbing him.
“Oh, right. But we already took the money. If we don’t beat her up, we’d be breaking our word, wouldn’t we?” The taller man clearly looked troubled.
“But if we do beat her up, we’d be breaking our word to our mom,” the other man said, also looking worried.
And so, the two muscular men became conflicted.
Jiang Pan: “…”
These thugs have no professional ethics.
From their conversation, Jiang Pan understood. Someone had paid them to beat her up.
Who could it be?
She was new to this place. She had been here for almost a month and hadn’t provoked anyone.
Based on what the original owner had done, she probably deserved to be beaten up.
It could be Jian Yue, or maybe Jian Guangtao…
But Jian Yue wasn’t this kind of person.
Surely, the protagonist of a novel wouldn’t hire thugs like this.
It didn’t match the kind of character a protagonist should have.
Jiang Pan also guessed it could be Li Qi. After all, she had scammed her out of ten million. It would be weird if she didn’t try to beat her up.
Li Qi seemed pretty clueless and was a cannon fodder in the novel, so it was highly likely she would hire such dumb thugs.
At this thought, Jiang Pan’s fear lessened considerably. In any case, she was confident she could handle two thugs with such low IQs.
“Excuse me, don’t worry about it. If you don’t mind, can you tell me how much they paid you?” Jiang Pan asked calmly and politely.
“This much,” the taller man said, holding up two fingers.
“Oh, twenty thousand.” Jiang Pan thought a beating couldn’t be worth less than that, at least twenty thousand. It should be at least two hundred thousand.
“Huh? Twenty thousand?” The tall man looked shocked, his chin doubling. “It’s two hundred.”
Now it was Jiang Pan’s turn to be shocked and incredulous. So, a beating was only worth two hundred bucks?
For a moment, she couldn’t decide if she was worthless or if the two thugs were out of touch with market rates.
“Is that two hundred each or…?” Jiang Pan asked, not giving up. At the same time, she felt a wave of contempt for the person who had hired them.
“Me and my brother get two hundred each,” the shorter man said, sounding satisfied.
Jiang Pan felt a strange sense of satisfaction herself, even a small sense of comfort.
Four hundred dollars was better than two hundred dollars.
“Hey, lady, why are you asking about the price?” The tall man suddenly looked confused, then it dawned on him. “Could it be that you want to join us?”
Jiang Pan: “…”
Jiang Pan admired his thought process. She was now certain that the two men in front of her were just big on the outside and had no brains on the inside.
Feeling a little more at ease, Jiang Pan cleared her throat, straightened her back, and calmly took five hundred dollars out of her pocket. “I’ll give you five hundred. Can you two let me go?”
“No way!” they said in unison, a principled kind of unison. “We already took someone else’s money, so we have to do the job. That’s the code of the street!”
Heads may fall, blood may spill, but the code of the street must never be broken.
Otherwise, they would be laughed at by their fellow thugs.
Jiang Pan’s mouth twitched. She didn’t hesitate to raise the price. “A thousand.”
“No,” they said, their voices a little shaky now. “Don’t bother. It doesn’t matter how much you offer. We have to beat you up today.”
Jiang Pan kept raising the price. “Two thousand.”
“…No,” they said, their voices getting more and more shaky. “You… you… we won’t take it. Don’t waste your time.”
Jiang Pan continued to raise the price. “Five thousand.”
“…No,” they couldn’t bring themselves to say that anymore. Their eyes were wavering, and their voices were stuttering. “You… you… don’t… don’t…”
“Stop stuttering. How about a final offer: twenty thousand,” Jiang Pan said. She felt that a beating should be worth at least that much.
If they were hired to beat up the original owner, they should have to pay her money.
But she wasn’t the original owner, so twenty thousand was the minimum she would accept.
“Alright! Ma’am, after you.”
“Come, come, let us help you with your things.”
“We’ll take you to the bus stop.”
“Do you want us to provide any after-sales service?”
Jiang Pan: “…”
The two men earned twenty thousand with tears in their eyes, blaming themselves. Sorry, it’s just that she offered too much.
Jiang Pan took the public bus back to the village as fast as she could. Even after the bus left the county, she was still a little shaken.
Luckily, those two were truly and utterly clueless.
Otherwise, she might have been beaten so badly that even the original owner’s mother wouldn’t recognize her.
Although, she didn’t actually know the original owner’s mother anyway.
When she got off the bus, Jiang Pan finally relaxed. But her mood wasn’t great.
Because she was lost.
It seemed that the original owner, that ungrateful wretch, hadn’t been home in a very long time.
That made sense. They had already cut ties, so there was no reason to visit.
But how could she not even remember the way home?
Just then, an elderly man carrying a hoe walked by. Jiang Pan quickly asked him for directions to the original owner’s village.
The old man spoke in a local dialect, basically saying she had taken the wrong path.
Jiang Pan couldn’t help but curse the original owner. She had followed her memories to get here.
“You’ve lived here for over a decade, and you don’t even remember the way home?” Jiang Pan was muttering to herself when a woman on a motorized tricycle stopped in front of her.
“Panpan? Is that Panpan?”
The voice sounded familiar, and the face looked a little familiar, too. Jiang Pan used her memory to figure out who the person was.
“My goodness, Panpan, you’ve become a city person. You haven’t been home in years and you don’t recognize your Second Aunt anymore?”
It was the village neighbor, Second Aunt. Jiang Pan finally, “passively” and with great difficulty, remembered. She quickly put on a polite smile. “Of course I recognize you, Second Aunt. I’m just a little dizzy from the bus ride.”
“Why did you come here?” Second Aunt asked, confused.
“I…” Jiang Pan coughed awkwardly. “Second Aunt, I’m tired of walking. Can you take me home?”
Jiang Pan breathed a sigh of relief as she got on the tricycle and stretched.
The bumpy ride ended at a house. As Jiang Pan got off the tricycle, a middle-aged man came out.
Without thinking, and with the conviction that a daughter shouldn’t not recognize her own father, she was determined to make the original owner’s parents happy. She blurted out “Dad,” and then, in an over-the-top performance, she excitedly rushed forward and hugged the middle-aged man, with tears streaming down her face. It was a flawless performance, a perfect portrayal of a long-lost daughter seeing her father.
Jiang Pan was secretly pleased. It was a good thing she had done some theater in college.
She gave herself full marks for the performance.
Second Aunt looked shocked. Why did this girl who hasn’t been back in years mistake her father?
After a moment of confusion, she quickly patted Jiang Pan. “Silly child, you’re mistaken! This is your Second Uncle! Why did you call him Dad?”
Even more shocked and bewildered was Second Uncle. For a second, he thought his wife had brought an illegitimate daughter home. He almost cried on the spot about being cheated on, but his wife’s words were like a timely rain that quenched his sadness.
Jiang Pan: “…”
Can someone please tell me how to get out of this?

Of course it’s like that! XD
