- Chapter 1 - I Didn't Want to Become the Villainess
My eyes were soaked with tears, and I was sniffing back snot. The view was shaky and the outlines were blurry, but I could clearly see the backs of the girls on the screen walking away hand-in-hand. For me, having reached the ending, that silhouette alone was enough to trigger a flood of tears.
“O-oof… If I cry any more than this, my body will dehydrate…”
No amount of tissues would be enough. Naturally, there was a reason for me being in this state.
—A moving story woven by maidens.
What comes to mind when you hear that?
Yes, that’s right.
Yuri.
Yuri is the only answer.
I get it, it’s common sense.
Yuri, in short, depicts romance between women.
Its preciousness, sublimity, nobility, fragility, loveliness, beauty… etc.
There’s no end to describing its charm. My own impoverished vocabulary probably can’t convey even one percent of its appeal.
Especially this one.
[Fleur de lis]
The abbreviation, “Fleur-lis,” was in a league of its own within the genre known as yuri games. The protagonist, who was supposed to be a nobody, manages to open the hearts of the noble heroines and accept their conflicts. The sight of them taking each other’s hands and helping one another was deeply moving. Or rather, it felt like my chest was carved out. It was on the level of having my heart clutched and squeezed tight. In any case, it was a profound shock.
“…But, I still feel like that one person was unnecessary.”
As my heart was immersed in the emotion, one single impurity crept into my mind when I thought back. It was about a certain character.
—Yuzuki Yuzuriha
She held the “villainess” position in this Fleur-lis world. The moment the bond between the protagonist and a heroine was about to deepen, she would appear as an obstructive presence.
“No, I know… I know. The antagonist role is important for creating plot development and variation in the story, but seriously…”
That said, Yuzuki Yuzuriha’s meddling was simply outrageous. You’d see a heroine appear, and the next moment, Yuzuki Yuzuriha would pop up. In this game, which involved interactions with multiple heroines, the villainess appeared just as many times as the heroines. And the words she spoke were nothing but verbal abuse, and her actions were all harassment aimed at tearing them apart.
In the end, her wickedness went too far, and she was chased out of the academy… I felt a sense of relief at that moment, but looking back, I still think:
“Wasn’t her screen time way too much…?”
What I wanted to see was the romance between girls, the drama of it. Definitely not some messy, drawn-out scenario where a malicious heart tears bonds apart. I knew about Yuzuki Yuzuriha’s evil deeds from the pre-release buzz, but she was an annoying pest that even surpassed that foreknowledge…
Well, the preciousness of the rest of it totally outweighed all that, so it’s fine!
“…Sigh. But man, I really overdid it with the all-nighter.”
I stretched wide and let out a breath. I had been so drawn into the story of Fleur-lis that I lost track of time and spent three nights in a row immersed in that world without sleeping. I hadn’t eaten properly, and I had used up all my energy with the torrent of tears. Looking out the window, light was starting to stream through a gap in the curtains. I had apparently welcomed the morning without realizing it. Although I had a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment from seeing the ending, my body was battered and exhausted.
“Yeah, I can’t take it anymore.”
Without resisting the abnormal heaviness of my eyelids, I closed my eyes.
“…Huh!?”
When I woke up, a voice escaped me reflexively. It seemed I had dozed off.
Darn it.
I forgot to set an alarm. Due to the three nights of staying up, it was hard to tell how long I had slept based on my internal clock. I anxiously searched for my smartphone.
“…Hmm?”
Wait, that’s strange. I can’t find my phone. More importantly, this place isn’t even my room when I look closely. That’s why I can’t make sense of the arrangement of things.
“Wait, hold on, what?”
Scary, scary, scary. Where is this place? I bolted upright from the bed.
“…Oh?”
Looking around the room, it was indeed not mine. But I had a sense of déjà vu. It was a room I’d seen somewhere before.
“Wait, isn’t this a dorm room?”
Yes, the dormitory where the protagonist and heroines live in Fleur-lis. The background was exactly the same.
…Huh, no, surely not? Believing that was impossible, I jumped out of bed and opened the curtains.
“…Verite Girls’ Academy.”
Beyond the dense trees, a towering silhouette peeked out. It was a grand building with exterior walls completely white and stained-glass windows reflecting the light. Seeing its distinctive structure, I involuntarily spoke the academy’s name. It was, after all, the school attended by the female students of Fleur-lis.
“Ugh, cough, cough… Th-this can’t be!? T-this place is men-forbidden… The Maiden’s Garden, Verite Girls’ Academy!?”
I choked on my words due to the incomprehensible situation.
“I-is this… reincarnation…?”
The first theory that came to mind. The possibility of it being a dream couldn’t be ruled out, but I’d never heard of a dream that felt this real and yet wouldn’t end.
“…In that case, I should probably go to school first, right?”
I checked what I was wearing again: pink satin pajamas. Too flashy and completely not my taste. Who’s the normie wearing this?
“My hair’s a mess, I should fix it.”
As my head gradually cleared, I began to understand the room’s layout—after all, I’d played the game. I walked over to the washstand. I looked at my reflection in the mirror… a-and?
“Th-this girl is…”
Brown hair, with gently curled ends. Sharp, cat-like eyes and a small, straight nose. She had a beautiful face, but a mischievous, impish girl who would look good with a cynical smile was staring back.
“…Hmm.”
I picked up a brush, intending to comb my hair, but—
“Wait, that’s Yuzuki Yuzuriha!”
I threw the brush away, completely unconvinced. The person standing there was the villainess, the most disliked character in the entire story.
