Inherited 100 Million - Chapter 12
The gray sky seemed to have collapsed.
Like a dam breaking, large flakes of falling snow seemed to cover everything on earth.
Her vision kept going black. In her sight, Miss Yang and the blood-robed person walked farther and farther away until they were just a black dot. Xue Yizhuo’s head felt dizzy. She instinctively put a hand to her forehead, and her legs gave out, causing her to fall forward.
She didn’t hit the ground. A person’s arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her into a soft embrace.
Someone seemed to be talking beside her ear, but Xue Yizhuo couldn’t hear clearly. She turned her head and stared blankly at Jun Yu’s face.
Jun Yu frowned and said softly, “Pardon me,” as she raised her hand and pointed her index finger at the center of Xue Yizhuo’s brow. She sent her spiritual sense into Xue Yizhuo’s Sea of Consciousness. She had prepared to be blocked, but to her surprise, there was no resistance at all.
Jun Yu was shocked. Even among couples, very few could easily enter the other’s Sea of Consciousness.
This was a cultivator’s most vulnerable place. If their body was destroyed, they could still be reincarnated or possess another body to continue cultivating. But if the Sea of Consciousness was destroyed, they would completely vanish from this world.
Xue Yizhuo was completely defenseless against her.
Jun Yu’s mood was complicated. She didn’t dare to stay in Xue Yizhuo’s Sea of Consciousness for long. She quickly scanned it, confirmed that it was intact, and then withdrew. Even with that brief check, Jun Yu discovered something unusual.
Xue Yizhuo had no cultivation.
Just a moment ago, Xue Yizhuo had used an ordinary round fan to block the blood arrow shot by the blood-robed person. Jun Yu had seen this with her own eyes. Xue Yizhuo was certainly not a mortal.
But even after entering her Sea of Consciousness, Jun Yu couldn’t feel her cultivation.
If it couldn’t be detected in the Sea of Consciousness, it would be even more impossible with other methods.
Xue Yizhuo came back to her senses.
She was still a little dazed and hadn’t realized she was back in the building. When she met Jun Yu’s complex gaze, she asked instinctively, “What’s wrong?”
Jun Yu was silent for a moment. “You passed out for a little while.”
“Ah, that…” Xue Yizhuo said dryly. “Maybe I’m just weak.”
She was still in Jun Yu’s arms. Jun Yu had to kneel to hold Xue Yizhuo properly. She gave her a light lift and said sincerely, “You are indeed a little light.”
Xue Yizhuo let out a startled cry at Jun Yu’s action and quickly grabbed Jun Yu’s arm. When she realized how big her reaction had been, she was so embarrassed she wanted to cover her face.
Xue Yizhuo scrambled out of Jun Yu’s arms and took a few steps back, almost bumping into another person. She apologized and looked back, realizing it was the silly girl she had met in Yangliu Alley.
Only then did she notice there were several other young men and women in the building, gathered around the bodies of Miss Yang and the blood-robed person.
The girl didn’t even notice that she had almost bumped into Xue Yizhuo. It was Xue Yizhuo who asked, “What are you all doing?”
“Studying,” the girl replied, glancing up at her before looking back down.
Xue Yizhuo was a little lost.
“They’re studying the twin demons,” Jun Yu said, walking over. “Twin demons are extremely rare, and there’s very little on record about them. I didn’t expect to see one here.”
Xue Yizhuo pointed at the siblings’ bodies and asked, “Are they not people?”
Jun Yu said, “Miss Yang used to be, but she is no longer.”
“Some women give birth to a strange kind of fetus, where two fetuses are joined together. They are often treated as demons. Sometimes both fetuses are alive when born, and sometimes one is alive and one is dead, which is called a ‘ghost-bearing infant.'”
“‘Ghost-bearing infants’ rarely live past ten. Even if they are not killed by their own relatives, they will die from a congenital defect,” Jun Yu said, looking at Miss Yang’s body with a calm expression. “Miss Yang’s older brother died in the womb and was joined to her. She was born carrying a corpse. The resentment of the dead fetus gave birth to a demon. Miss Yang was afflicted by a congenital defect and harmed by demonic energy. She should not have lived past ten years.”
Xue Yizhuo said in a low voice, “But the demon wanted her to live.”
Jun Yu lowered her eyes. “The demon fed on human blood to nourish Miss Yang. Over time, Miss Yang also became a demon.”
Xue Yizhuo thought of the look of relief on Miss Yang and the blood-robed person’s faces when they took their own lives. Perhaps in her heart, she also did not want to harm innocent lives.
But she wanted the demon to continue existing, and the demon wanted her to live.
Miss Yang was not innocent. Xue Yizhuo couldn’t tell if the complex emotions she felt were pity or something else. Regardless, it was a sad tale.
Having not rested all day, Xue Yizhuo felt tired. She rubbed her legs and sat down on a chair, watching the disciples of the Shiwai Pavilion studying the demon’s corpse. After a while, they suddenly started to argue. They debated things that Xue Yizhuo couldn’t understand, their faces flushed with anger.
Eventually, they even pulled a helpless-looking Jun Yu into the argument.
Xue Yizhuo watched the chaotic scene, a smile forming in her eyes.
••••
The next day, it was pouring rain, as if to wash away all the blood that had been spilled on the ground the night before.
Xue Yizhuo was walking very carefully, but she still accidentally stepped into a puddle, getting her delicate embroidered shoes wet. She stomped her foot in frustration, splashing the innocent Old Li beside her.
Old Li said, “I told you, don’t go out in such heavy rain!”
Xue Yizhuo was bending down to take off her shoes. She turned her head and glared at Old Li. “The doctor said we have a follow-up appointment today and need to get some medicine. What’s worse, getting soaked or getting sick?”
“Both are bad,” Old Li said. “I’m already better!”
Xue Yizhuo always listened to the doctor. She hated it when Old Li felt fine and didn’t follow the doctor’s orders. She said sternly, “The doctor said to go, so we’re going. You don’t know anything about medicine!”
The young girl was too fierce. Old Li could only sigh.
After tossing her shoes into her inventory, Xue Yizhuo walked barefoot on the ground. The drainage system in Qingping Town was actually very good, but with such heavy rain, even the river was overflowing. Most of the town’s houses were built along the river, so a large part of the town was affected by the downpour.
Puddles of water flowed across the dark flagstones.
Most of the grime on the ground was washed away. Xue Yizhuo walked for a long time, but her feet remained clean. Her round, delicate toes were a soft pink color, like petals.
Most houses had trees planted in their courtyards, their branches reaching over the walls. The leaves were battered and scattered. Some trees had accumulated a lot of water. When it reached a certain amount, it suddenly dropped onto the oiled paper umbrella, making a loud thud.
Xue Yizhuo had to use both hands to hold the umbrella steady.
The courtyard gate of a house in front of her suddenly opened. A familiar group of people came out. Xue Yizhuo freed one hand and waved it forcefully, shouting the name of the person in the lead. Her voice sounded muffled as it passed through the rain.
Jun Yu looked over, her eyes smiling. “Miss Xue.”
Xue Yizhuo saw the disciples of the Shiwai Pavilion lined up neatly and asked in confusion, “Where are you all going?”
Jun Yu said, “Our business here is finished. It’s time for us to go back.”
Xue Yizhuo said “oh.” Although she was a little surprised, she didn’t try to make them stay. “Have a safe journey.”
Jun Yu nodded, then suddenly called out to her again. “Miss Xue.”
“Hmm?” Xue Yizhuo looked at Jun Yu, who extended her hand toward her. She didn’t flinch.
Jun Yu raised her hand and brushed a wet leaf off Xue Yizhuo’s shoulder. She didn’t know when it had landed there.
Jun Yu said, “The roads are difficult in the rain. Be safe.”
“I will!” Xue Yizhuo replied brightly. “You all be safe too!”
The people from the Shiwai Pavilion didn’t need to worry about the rain at all. Although they were also holding umbrellas, the umbrellas were more of an accessory to not draw attention. An invisible barrier surrounded them, keeping all the rain out.
Xue Yizhuo and Old Li only started moving again when Jun Yu and her group were almost out of sight.
Old Li asked Xue Yizhuo, “Are you very close to that young lady?”
Xue Yizhuo nodded, then shook her head. “We’re friends.”
Maybe she would never see Jun Yu again, but she would remember the time they spent together for the rest of her life.
Jun Yu had been very kind to her. That night, after she found out Xue Yizhuo was not a normal person, she didn’t question her or become distant.
Xue Yizhuo was a little sad to see Jun Yu leave, but they both had places they wanted to go.
••••
After leaving Qingping Town, the river became wider. The rushing water flowed toward the distant mountains.
The young girl looked back every so often.
Jun Yu patted her shoulder and called her name. “Xiao Wu.”
Xiao Wu quickly turned her head and said obediently, “Pavilion Master.”
Jun Yu asked her, “Are you sad to leave?”
“No!” Xiao Wu quickly shook her head, as if afraid she would be left behind. She hesitated for a moment and said, “Pavilion Master, are we really just leaving like this?”
Jun Yu gave a faint hum of confirmation.
Xiao Wu said tentatively, “But the person you were looking for…”
Jun Yu lowered her eyelashes. “I have already found her.”
