Inherited 100 Million - Chapter 7
Even with Xue Yizhuo’s simple inquiries, she was able to gather enough information. As long as someone wasn’t afraid of the murderer’s identity as a demon cultivator, anyone could easily guess who the culprit was.
“I asked some people about what the victims were doing in the days before they died,” Xue Yizhuo said to Jun Yu. “The deceased were a few hooligans in town. The things they did every day were pretty much the same, but after comparing their actions, I found an unusual commonality.”
Xue Yizhuo wiggled her index finger. “They all offended Miss Yang.”
“Miss Yang only recently moved to Qingping Town. I haven’t met her, but I’ve heard things. Rumor has it that she’s incredibly beautiful, but unfortunately, she’s a hunchback.”
“All the victims were men, and they either flirted with or mocked Miss Yang. So—”
Xue Yizhuo paused. “I suspect the murderer is a secret admirer of Miss Yang.”
This theory made perfect sense. The only thing that Xue Yizhuo couldn’t figure out was Old Li. If the other victims were killed by Miss Yang’s admirer for offending her, how could she explain Old Li? Old Li didn’t seem like the type to mock someone for a physical disability, and it was even more impossible for him to harass a decent woman.
Ultimately, she would have to ask Old Li himself.
As they talked, they had already left the jelly stall, walked through a narrow alley, and emerged onto a wide street.
The last rays of the setting sun had not yet disappeared, and a twilight glow bathed the world in a coppery light.
Xue Yizhuo stopped walking.
“What’s wrong?” Jun Yu stopped with her.
Xue Yizhuo gave a light cough, a little embarrassed, her voice even softer than usual. “I forgot the way to the clinic.”
Xue Yizhuo heard Jun Yu let out a small laugh.
She felt a bit of a “what-the-hell” attitude. “Even an immortal mocks people.”
“I’m not mocking you,” Jun Yu said with a straight face. “You’re very interesting, Miss Xue.”
Xue Yizhuo couldn’t tell if Jun Yu was complimenting her or insulting her.
“The roads in Qingping Town haven’t changed since I remember them. If you trust me, I can lead the way,” Jun Yu said.
Of course, she trusted her.
The Shiwai Pavilion Master in the game’s storyline was a person of noble character, admired by all righteous cultivators. Xue Yizhuo knew very few of the characters, but Jun Yu had left a very deep impression on her. Of course, she trusted Jun Yu.
Jun Yu’s hand raised slightly, as if to motion for Xue Yizhuo to follow her, but Xue Yizhuo thought Jun Yu was offering her hand, and naturally placed her own into it. “Then I’ll trouble you, Miss Jun.”
Jun Yu was slightly stunned.
Xue Yizhuo’s hand was very soft, boneless and a little plump from her young age. It was clear she had never done any heavy labor and didn’t have the thin calluses on her palm like Jun Yu did from practicing with a sword.
This hand should only hold a thin-handled fan, with a fan surface as light as silk, the air it stirred as gentle as a breeze.
Jun Yu gently held her hand. “Try not to get lost.”
Xue Yizhuo’s reply was quick. “You’re holding me.”
••••
By the time they arrived at the clinic, the sun had completely set and the moon had not yet risen. Most homes had a lantern hanging under the eaves.
From a distance, Xue Yizhuo saw Old Li sitting on a small chair in front of the clinic. He looked much better and was happily helping the doctor sort out some herbs.
Xue Yizhuo let go of Jun Yu’s hand and hurried over, grabbing the edge of her skirt. Old Li heard her footsteps and turned his head to tell her to slow down.
Xue Yizhuo squatted down in front of him, looking at his face for a long time. When she saw that he looked a lot better, she was surprised. “You recovered so fast, Old Li.”
Before Old Li could say anything, the doctor next to him said, without any humility, “It’s because my medical skills are excellent!”
The doctor looked to be about the same age as Old Li, but he was much sturdier, a clear sign that he knew the secret to good health.
As people get older, they get more sick, so perhaps a mortal’s health advice would be useful to Old Li. Xue Yizhuo asked the doctor, “Doctor Chen, how do you usually stay so healthy?”
Doctor Chen stroked his goatee and said, swaying his head, “For good health, diet is the most crucial part of life, food, and shelter! If you eat the wrong things, no matter how many tonics you take, you won’t be able to make up for it. You should eat less spicy food, and drink less alcohol, or none at all…”
Xue Yizhuo poked Old Li. “Did you hear that? No more drinking.”
Old Li pretended to be deaf, looking at the sky and the ground but not at Xue Yizhuo.
When his gaze shifted, he saw Jun Yu standing nearby, not approaching.
Old Li’s expression suddenly froze.
Jun Yu was a little lost in thought, looking down at her own hand.
It still felt a little warm.
As an ice spiritual root cultivator, her body temperature was lower than a normal person’s, and her hands were always cold.
The same went for the hilt of her sword, which she held all the time.
But Xue Yizhuo’s hand was not like that…
Jun Yu looked up at the girl who was trying to talk sense into the old man.
Xue Yizhuo lightly poked Old Li’s calf again. “Did seeing a beautiful girl make you go dumb?”
Only then did Old Li realize he had been staring at Jun Yu for a little too long.
He scratched his head. “It’s my first time seeing a girl who looks like a goddess.”
Xue Yizhuo scoffed. “You said the same thing when you first saw me. Can’t you find any new compliments?”
Old Li said with an air of righteousness, “I’m uneducated!”
Xue Yizhuo also realized she had been neglecting Jun Yu. She got up and ran to her. “You can just leave us here. Old Li and I can get back on our own!”
Jun Yu said, “I promised to see you home.”
Xue Yizhuo nodded. “Then I’ll go ask Old Li.”
Old Li was a little distracted.
Xue Yizhuo had to repeat herself several times before he finally heard what she said. After glancing at Jun Yu, he hesitated. “Will it be too much trouble?”
“It’s no trouble at all,” Jun Yu said softly. “I feel a connection to Miss Xue, and I wouldn’t feel at ease letting her go back alone.”
What connection? Xue Yizhuo thought to herself. You just think I have a great foundation for cultivation and want to trick me into becoming your disciple in the Shiwai Pavilion.
Xue Yizhuo tugged on Old Li’s arm, echoing Jun Yu. “It’s fine. Don’t worry. The sooner you go back, the sooner you can rest. You still don’t look very well.”
He hadn’t even heard her speak a moment ago.
Old Li half-heartedly agreed.
Their place was not very far from the clinic.
At least, for Jun Yu, it seemed as if she had only walked a short distance with Xue Yizhuo before they had already arrived.
On the way back, Xue Yizhuo had been supporting Old Li. She said they were neighbors, but to Jun Yu, they looked like family.
Walking beside them, Jun Yu felt like an outsider.
Her long eyelashes drooped, concealing the emotions in her eyes.
Xue Yizhuo said her goodbyes to Jun Yu in front of Old Li’s house. Leaning against the courtyard door, she thanked Jun Yu.
Jun Yu said, “We will see each other again.”
Xue Yizhuo nodded. As long as Jun Yu was still in Qingping Town, they would definitely meet again.
But Jun Yu wouldn’t stay in Qingping Town forever.
Xue Yizhuo was a tree that wanted to root itself in Qingping Town, but Jun Yu was a bird that was only temporarily resting.
This wasn’t her world.
