Married the Second Generation Fox Demon with a Baby in a Flash Marriage - Chapter 14
The person asking was her roommate, Zhao Qingqing.
Hu Mengmeng had gone out yesterday and hadn’t returned; her roommates had even called her. She wondered if they had reported her to the counselor.
“I… I went to see my friend at the School of Media. Tao Tao—the one you guys met last time. I got back late and didn’t want to wake you. Sorry, I missed your calls,” Hu Mengmeng said from behind the mosquito net, quickly pulling back her bloodline. She couldn’t afford to play around with it anymore; she had business to attend to.
“If we didn’t know you had a friend in another college, we would have called the police,” roommate Si Xiaoqi added.
“I’m so sorry. My phone is acting up. Please don’t tell the counselor,” Hu Mengmeng pleaded, finally tucking the bloodline away and peeking out from a gap in the net.
“Of course we won’t. As long as you’re okay. Just remember to text next time,” Zhao Qingqing smiled.
The two roommates didn’t suspect a thing. Hu Mengmeng let out a secret sigh of relief.
“Mengmeng, are you going shopping with us today?” Si Xiaoqi asked as Hu Mengmeng climbed down from her bed.
“Oh, no, I have some things to do today,” she replied.
In their dorm, Yu Luolu had already gone home for the holiday since she lived nearby. Si Xiaoqi and Zhao Qingqing were clearly heading out for a shopping spree. Hu Mengmeng wanted to go too, but she had something much more important to handle.
She headed to the shower with a head of messy short hair. While washing, she instinctively reached for the bell on her neck, only to find it gone.
She panicked for a moment, wondering where it could have dropped. It could be at that villa, Shen Yuexi’s “secret base,” or somewhere in the woods on the back mountain. She felt a wave of regret; she had kept that bell for over ten years, and now it was just… gone.
After her shower, she changed into a black short-sleeved shirt, jeans, and sneakers. The shoes were fine, but the shirt and jeans were now far too large. The shirt was oversized and baggy, and the jeans would fall off without a belt. Her previously tight clothes had become “hip-hop style.” It looked like she’d need a whole new wardrobe.
While the fox bloodline was suppressed, Hu Mengmeng felt her mind wasn’t as sharp as it was in her demon state. Her vision, hearing, and sense of smell returned to average human levels because all her spiritual energy was being used to hold back the bloodline. After experiencing that heightened state of sensitivity, she felt incredibly dull now.
This is the price of keeping the secret, I guess. I just have to deal with it for now.
“Mengmeng! You lost so much weight during military training! You’ve become so pretty! And you didn’t even get a tan! I’m so jealous!” Si Xiaoqi exclaimed as she caught Hu Mengmeng’s reflection in the mirror.
The other girls were all tanned, with clear lines on their foreheads where their caps had been.
“Really? I was so exhausted I didn’t even notice. Mengmeng, you’re amazing! What sunscreen did you use?” Zhao Qingqing asked, joining them.
“Hehe, you guys are exaggerating. I was just fat before, so I look different now that I’m thinner. I don’t even have sunscreen on my desk, just cleanser and moisturizer. Maybe it’s just natural beauty,” Hu Mengmeng joked. She desperately wanted to brag about her actual looks, but her circumstances didn’t allow it. Still, she felt a small spark of pride at their envy.
Once the roommates left for the mall, she quickly bolted the door and exhaled. Her body visibly shifted and elongated as she let the pressure off.
She immediately called her mother. “Mom, when are you coming? I’m on holiday now. I have something important to tell you.”
“I’m already on the bus. You brat, don’t tell me you got caught by… you know, those people?!” Su Mingli’s voice came through, lowered slightly to avoid being overheard.
Su Mingli had finally made the hard choice to rent out her shop back home. She couldn’t bring herself to sell the apartment yet—she wanted to see how things went in Fengcheng first.
“No, Mom, I’m safe. What time do you arrive? I’ll pick you up.”
“I should be there around noon by high-speed rail. Don’t worry about picking me up; I’ll take a bus to your school and should be there by one. We’ll look at apartments then,” Su Mingli said.
Knowing her mother was coming made Hu Mengmeng feel much more secure. Her stomach growled, so she suppressed her bloodline again and left the dorm. She tried to call Tao Tao to get breakfast and discuss their mutual “secret identities,” but the call took forever to connect.
“Tao Tao, have you eaten? I’ll bring you something. What do you want?”
“Mengmeng… I went home. Go eat by yourself,” Tao Tao’s soft voice replied.
“What? You went home alone? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Thanks, Mengmeng. I can’t rely on you forever. I can do this on my own. I have to go, I’m getting on a bus,” Tao Tao said, hanging up. Hu Mengmeng tried to call back, but there was no answer.
Is she scared? Hu Mengmeng wondered. Well, anyone would be scared after being chased by a sword. Since Tao Tao was already on her way and her mother was arriving soon, Hu Mengmeng couldn’t follow her. She called Tao Tao’s father, Tao Zhengcheng, to let him know she was heading home, then went to the canteen.
At the Fengjing Court villa, Ye Xinyu sat on the sofa wearing deep grey loungewear after her shower. Aunt Lan was briefing her on the previous night’s events.
“The female student [Xu Lianlian] had half her leg bitten off. Bone, ligament, and nerve damage. She’s had surgery, but the leg is permanently disabled; she’ll need a prosthesis. She hasn’t woken up yet, so we don’t know who did it. Then, around midnight, we encountered another one—a Great Demon. It was incredibly fast. We called in the helicopter for thermal imaging, but we lost it. Gu Yiying says there are no more ‘stranger’ auras on campus.”
“It’s two demons,” Ye Xinyu said. “Likely both freshers who snuck in. One has a leg disability—it shouldn’t be hard to track her down by checking the student records. The other one might be a close friend or have a hidden connection. Go check the records first. I’ll look into it myself when I do dorm inspections this week.”
“Are you sure you’re up for it?” Aunt Lan asked.
“I’ll be fine after a few days of rest. That demon eats people; it’s dangerous. Aunt Lan, please have someone redecorate this place to be a bit more comfortable. I’ll be staying here. I’m going to the security room now.”
Ye Xinyu had recovered about 40–50% of her strength. After a shower and breakfast, she felt much better. Now, she needed to see if the reality matched the “illusions” she remembered.
One of the reasons she had bought the villa so quickly was that she noticed the security cameras. Since the place had been vacant, the footage would act as a perfect record of the night.
She entered the monitoring room and pulled up the footage from the previous night. The night-vision recording wasn’t crystal clear and was in monochrome, but the events were unmistakable.
As the footage played, Ye Xinyu’s face cycled between pale white and deep crimson.
