Married the Second Generation Fox Demon with a Baby in a Flash Marriage - Chapter 27
Hu Mengmeng looked at Ye Xinyu and Huo Zhilan without saying a word, her mind racing.
She harbored doubts about whether Ye Xinyu had truly never killed an innocent demon; after all, Ye Xinyu’s pursuit of Tao Tao that night had been very strange. Hu Mengmeng believed she knew better than anyone how kind and gentle Tao Tao was, having known her for so many years. She didn’t know if Ye Xinyu had recognized Tao Tao that night, and since Tao Tao was currently staying at her grandmother’s house in the countryside and Ye Xinyu wasn’t bothering her, she might not know. Thus, Hu Mengmeng did not rashly ask about it.
Regardless of Ye Xinyu’s nature, Hu Mengmeng felt that she herself would never kill indiscriminately. Her previous stance had been too absolute; there were all kinds of demons. Natural enemies and the law of the jungle were most prominent among them—just as foxes ate rabbits and mice, foxes themselves could be prey for higher-level demons. Every demon had a different way of cultivating: some used humans or other demons as resources, and some were naturally violent with low intelligence, making peaceful coexistence impossible.
In short, the demon race was far from a harmonious collective. However, to demons, demon hunters were their common natural enemy.
While it seemed contradictory for a demon to become a demon hunter, Hu Mengmeng was a hybrid—half human. For her, that hostility was significantly weakened. She had to admit that the conditions mentioned by Ye Xinyu and Huo Zhilan moved her. She was just starting college and had relied on delivery work for pocket money, but now she had a child to raise.
Huo Zhilan said that one low-level Gnawing Rabbit was worth 50,000 yuan. The child in Ye Xinyu’s belly needed nutrients and spiritual energy. If Hu Mengmeng wanted to buy those things, they would likely be expensive; if she caught them herself, she could make money and give the edible parts to Ye Xinyu as tonics. It was a win-win.
“You really want me to be a demon hunter that badly?” Hu Mengmeng asked, looking at Ye Xinyu after thinking it through.
“Whether you do it or not is your decision. I am simply stating facts,” Ye Xinyu replied indifferently.
“I’m a demon, how can I be a demon hunter? Can anyone just do it?”
“A demon hunter requires a certification. There are two paths if you want to do it. One is to be an independent hunter and pass an exam at a relevant institution for a certificate. This allows you to receive commissions directly from private clients or the government. For government commissions, the state evaluates the demon’s destructive power and provides rewards. To take the exam, you would have to seal your fox bloodline and pass a rigorous test. It’s very difficult; I only passed mine at fifteen. An independent certificate is recorded on file and provides convenience in many matters, making it easier to get commissions online.”
“What’s the other way?” Hu Mengmeng asked. She knew her own worth; if she sealed her bloodline, she’d lose her physical strength and, without any skills, she’d be no different from an ordinary person.
“The second way is to affiliate yourself with a Hidden Sect or an individual who already holds a certificate. For example, you could be my assistant. Additionally, the Ye family belongs to the Sword Sect of the Hidden Sects. We have people under us who may not have individual certificates but are managed and led by the Ye family; they receive compensation for participating in our operations,” Ye Xinyu explained.
“I don’t want to depend on anyone. You said the Ye family has enemies, and you can’t use your techniques right now. Until the child is born, I will do my best to protect you. If any malicious demons come, I’ll deal with them. If the Ye family has commissions, you can let me handle them. I’ll temporarily be under your name, but only temporarily—you can’t give me orders,” Hu Mengmeng stated.
“Those terms can be included in the pre-marriage agreement. However, with your current strength, you are far from ready. Those rabbits were low-level; you handled them with fox instinct, but higher-level ones are much harder to deal with. If you’re going to hunt under the Ye name, you’ll have to learn from me.”
This was much better than Hu Mengmeng’s previous refusal to touch demons. Having her under the Ye name would ensure government commissions wouldn’t stop, which would keep the search for Ye Xinyu’s mother active. While the Ye family had some personnel, most were beginners. Hu Mengmeng’s current strength was close to Ye Xinyu’s peak, and in her demon form, her physical stats were even higher.
“Fine. Thank you then,” Hu Mengmeng said.
“No need to be polite. If you help the Ye family, the family won’t mistreat you. Send your account details to Aunt Lan; she’ll handle your payments.”
Agreement reached, Ye Xinyu stopped talking. When Hu Mengmeng’s fox bloodline was active, she was more beautiful and bewitching, but also sharp and calculating. Despite Ye Xinyu’s body physically yearning to be close to her, she maintained her cold, aloof facade. Hu Mengmeng, seeing Ye Xinyu wasn’t in pain, didn’t try to get close either, forcing herself to look out the window.
“We’re at the hotel. Retract your bloodline; I’ll take you to the room to shower and change,” Ye Xinyu said as they arrived. Hu Mengmeng complied, her clothes visibly loosening as her form shrank.
The moment the bloodline was gone, Hu Mengmeng got goosebumps. Recalling the ferocity with which she had killed the rabbits, she felt only horror. Those things were repulsive! Their teeth would have left holes in me if they’d bitten me!
Ye Xinyu felt like laughing seeing the clear terror in Hu Mengmeng’s eyes and her shrunken, hunched shoulders. It was as if the girl were two different people depending on whether the bloodline was active or not.
The hotel belonged to the Ye family, and Ye Xinyu had a permanent suite. She took Hu Mengmeng there directly. Hu Mengmeng went to shower, and Ye Xinyu used the other bathroom to wash away the scent of blood.
In a high-end villa district nearby, a man angrily smashed an ashtray on a table.
“Wasn’t Ye Xinyu injured? How did she kill so many Gnawing Rabbits! What did you see!” The man was Ou Shixing, whom Ye Xinyu had met previously.
“Young Master Ou, she was indeed injured and taken by an ambulance the other day. She didn’t do it herself today, but there was a strange person with her—very agile, with jumping ability and speed exceeding the Gnawing Rabbits,” a myna bird perched on a clothes rack spoke.
“Useless! Since when did she have such a powerful helper? It’s been so long and we still haven’t finished her! Keep watching them. I’ll send a few stronger demons to test them. The Hidden Sect Assembly is coming soon; Ye Xinyu and the Ye family must be secured quickly!” Ou Shixing sneered, malice in his eyes.
The bird flapped its wings and flew out.
When Ye Xinyu emerged from the bathroom, the clothes she had ordered had arrived.
“These are for you. They’ve been dry-cleaned and pressed. Try them on; if they don’t fit, we can exchange them.” She handed a bag to Hu Mengmeng, who came out in a bathrobe.
Hu Mengmeng took out the clothes. They were well-made and had a faint, pleasant fragrance. She put them on; they fit perfectly. The top was a pink doll-collared shirt with ruffled sleeves and pearl accents; the skirt was a white pleated midi skirt. It came with pink rhinestone flats and a pink tasseled bag.
Looking in the mirror, Hu Mengmeng felt… sweet. She had never dressed like this before, but she had to admit it looked good.
When she stepped out, Ye Xinyu had also changed. She wore a silk white shirt and black wide-leg trousers, her hair in a low ponytail with no bangs. She looked sophisticated, mature, and “ascetic” cool. Hu Mengmeng froze, her face turning red. Ye Xinyu looked like a model from a magazine.
They left together. Contrast-wise, Ye Xinyu was slightly taller and their styles were completely different, but they looked strangely well-matched. Huo Zhilan had switched to a different car with a floral scent inside, finally making Ye Xinyu feel more comfortable.
Hu Mengmeng sat nervously. The Ye family were of the Sword Sect—did they all use swords? She wondered what the grandfather was like. If he found out what she’d done to Ye Xinyu, would he skewer her?
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the Ye ancestral home. It was a traditional Chinese estate with pavilions, rockeries, and winding corridors—like an ink-wash painting.
“When we see my grandfather, just call him ‘Grandpa’ like I do. Be yourself, but most importantly, keep your fox bloodline suppressed so it doesn’t pop out,” Ye Xinyu whispered before they got out.
Hu Mengmeng swallowed hard and followed her. Ye Xinyu led her through a corridor to a waterside pavilion, told her to wait, and went to find her grandfather.
Ye Shou-ting, 72, was disabled and used a wheelchair due to a demonic toxin from an old injury. His only hobbies now were raising goldfish and turtles. When Ye Xinyu approached, he looked up, his expression shifting from joy to anger.
“What is the meaning of this?!” he asked, his voice raspy.
“I’m sorry, Grandpa. I met a junior at school and liked her. I had a flare-up of my old injury and was missing Mom, so I had some wine… she came to see me, and I ended up with her,” Ye Xinyu said, her face showing a touch of guilt.
Ye Shou-ting stared in disbelief, gasping and coughing with rage while Ye Xinyu patted his back. “You… the Ye family relies on you, and you… do you want the family to be picked apart until not even the bone fragments are left!” He pushed her hand away and struck the wheelchair armrest angrily.
“I’m sorry, Grandpa. I still have 70-80% of my cultivation. I can still hunt demons.”
He breathed heavily, silent with anger.
“Grandpa, I brought the girl here today. Since the deed is done, I want to marry her. She absorbed my Primal Yin and has some talent; I intend to train her,” Ye Xinyu said softly.
“Take me to see her,” he said after a long silence.
Ye Xinyu pushed his wheelchair toward the pavilion. He didn’t suspect her of lying yet; she had always been obedient. Now that she’d brought the girl, he would be able to tell at a glance if she had spiritual energy.
