Married the Second Generation Fox Demon with a Baby in a Flash Marriage - Chapter 32
Hu Mengmeng felt both miserable and furious.
They had talked things through clearly yesterday, yet here she was throwing another temper tantrum today, showing absolutely no trust in her.
Perhaps their zodiac signs truly clashed; a demon hunter and a demon—when had they ever trusted each other?
Hu Mengmeng looked at the peach in her hand, took a large bite, and finished it in just a few mouthfuls. She didn’t even register the taste. Back in her room, she tossed the clean-gnawed peach pit into the trash.
After pacing around her room several times, her emotions still hadn’t settled. She picked up her phone and sent a message to Tao Tao. Recently, she had been messaging Tao Tao every day; her friend replied occasionally, but only with trivial pleasantries.
A while passed after sending the message, but there was still no reply.
Hu Mengmeng didn’t want to stay cooped up in the room anymore. She didn’t have classes until the late afternoon, so she packed her bag, suppressed her bloodline, and went to find Su Mingli.
“Why are you here? Did you make lunch for Xiao Ye?” Su Mingli asked, busy with work.
“She’s in a mood and won’t let me near her. I’m not going to keep pressing my warm face against her cold shoulder,” Hu Mengmeng grumbled.
“What do you mean ‘cold shoulder’? Didn’t I tell you her emotions might be unstable right now? Can’t you be a little more patient? I swear, what is wrong with you! Don’t just stand there making things worse; go back and coax her. Calmly ask her what’s actually bothering her. Yesterday she seemed to have such a good temper, such a well-bred child.” Su Mingli blocked Hu Mengmeng from helping and shooed her away.
Having been through it herself, Su Mingli knew exactly how exhausting and sensitive pregnancy could be. Looking at Hu Mengmeng, she felt her daughter was being foolish and insensitive.
“Mom…” Hu Mengmeng started.
“Are you going or not! I’m going over tonight, and if Xiao Ye is still angry, I’ll break your legs!” Su Mingli raised her rolling pin.
“Fine, fine, fine, I’m going, okay?” Hu Mengmeng raised her hands in surrender.
Forced by Su Mingli, Hu Mengmeng hurried back to Ye Xinyu’s villa. It was just around lunchtime, so she prepared a meal. Since Ye Xinyu wouldn’t let her help with absorption, Hu Mengmeng used ordinary vegetables Su Mingli had bought yesterday.
She made four dishes and a soup with rice. Once plated, it looked and smelled delicious. She went upstairs to find Ye Xinyu.
She knocked several times, but there was no response.
“Something didn’t happen, did it?” Worried, Hu Mengmeng dialed Ye Xinyu’s phone, but it was busy.
However, there wasn’t a sound from inside. Hu Mengmeng went out, leaped directly onto the balcony of Ye Xinyu’s room, and opened the glass door. Ye Xinyu was nowhere to be found.
She had left! Hu Mengmeng was still trying to figure out how to phrase her apology, and the person was already gone!
Hu Mengmeng went back and ate all the food herself. Given her current activity level, she would burn through those calories after a few leaps.
After eating, she cleaned up and heard a notification. It was a reply from Tao Tao—a voice message.
“Mengmeng, don’t come looking for me. I’m… I’m not human anymore. I…” In the recording, Tao Tao sounded panicked and stifled, as if suppressing something. The short sentence cut off abruptly. Hu Mengmeng felt as though Tao Tao was about to cry.
What’s happening?
She knew Tao Tao was a demon. Was she only just finding out herself? And why was she so terrified?
Hu Mengmeng called Tao Tao, but it wouldn’t go through. She then called Tao Tao’s father, Tao Zhengcheng.
“Uncle Tao? Where’s Tao Tao? Do you know what’s wrong with her?”
“Tao Tao is missing! I picked her up from her grandmother’s, and we agreed she’d go back to school. But not even a day after getting back, she disappeared. We’re looking everywhere. She’s a young girl on a crutch; I have no idea where she could have gone!” Tao Zhengcheng’s voice was frantic with worry.
“How could this happen!” Hu Mengmeng panicked.
“Sigh, I don’t know. Ever since the holiday, she’s been very off, locking herself in her room all day. She finally went out to get some air, and now she’s gone. Mengmeng, you focus on your studies. I have to go find her.”
Hu Mengmeng hung up, left a note for Ye Xinyu, called her counselor to ask for leave, packed her things, and called Su Mingli.
“I’m worried about Tao Tao. I’m going to look for her.”
“Be careful then. Make sure you explain things to Xiao Ye so she doesn’t worry,” Su Mingli said.
Hu Mengmeng rolled her eyes at the mention of Ye Xinyu. The woman had vanished; how was she supposed to explain anything?
She headed to the station and bought a bus ticket back to Taolin County. Because she needed her senses to find Tao Tao, she didn’t suppress her bloodline, only using a mask and hat for cover.
An hour into the trip, Hu Mengmeng saw a Hummer driving in the opposite direction. The vehicle radiated a mixture of spiritual and demonic energy.
“Please don’t hurt me, I won’t harm anyone, please, let me go, ah…” As the cars passed, Hu Mengmeng caught a faint sound. She couldn’t mistake it—it was Tao Tao’s voice.
“Driver! Stop the bus!” Hu Mengmeng bolted upright.
“Stop? I can’t stop on the highway!” the driver replied.
“I have an emergency! I need to get off!”
“No matter the emergency, I can’t let you off here. It’s dangerous!”
The other passengers began to complain as well. Hu Mengmeng couldn’t waste time explaining; she had to catch that car immediately. She reached up, gripped the edges of the bus’s ceiling hatch, and gave it a violent shove. The window flew open. She leaped out, leaving the passengers screaming in shock.
The wind instantly snatched away her hat, leaving only her mask. She stood on the roof of the bus. Driven by animal instinct, she felt zero fear of the high-speed vehicles. She spotted a large truck in the opposing lane and, timing the relative speeds, she leaped through the air and landed on its roof in less than a second.
The people in her original bus stared, mouths agape, feeling like they were watching an action movie. Hu Mengmeng’s silhouette was so fast they didn’t even have time to tap the record button on their phones.
She looked ahead, but the Hummer was fast and had already vanished from sight. She continued to leap from roof to roof of faster vehicles, working her way back. Eventually, she hitched enough rides to get back to Fengcheng—specifically, to Ye Xinyu’s villa.
It was past 7:00 PM and getting dark. From a distance, she saw the lights in Ye Xinyu’s room were on. She sprinted toward the villa and immediately spotted the black Hummer parked outside—exactly like the one on the highway!
Hu Mengmeng had intended to ask Ye Xinyu if she had kidnapped Tao Tao, but seeing this car, she didn’t even need to ask!
She ran inside. Several people were standing in the living room: Ye Xinyu and others she didn’t recognize. In the center of the circle was Tao Tao.
Talismans were pinned to Tao Tao’s limbs. her clothes were tattered, and her exposed skin was covered in blood and scrapes. Her hair was a mess, blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, and her eyes were glazed over as if she had lost consciousness. She lay on the rug, twitching and letting out agonizing moans.
Tao Tao radiated demonic energy. While demons also use spiritual energy, their released aura is usually dark grey due to their constitution. These humans—practitioners of the Hidden Sects—radiated gold or white light. Their spiritual energy was naturally designed to suppress demons.
Hu Mengmeng charged in. A man in black tried to block her, but he was no match for a fox demon with an unsealed bloodline; a single shove sent him flying several meters.
Hu Mengmeng reached the center and blocked the golden energy the others were directing at Tao Tao. Being in her demon form, the energy affected her too, causing a burning sensation, but it wasn’t as severe as what Tao Tao was experiencing.
“Stop!” Ye Xinyu retracted her hands and signaled the others.
Ye Xinyu looked deathly pale and weak, her forehead covered in sweat.
“Ye Xinyu, what are you doing?! Why are you doing this to Tao Tao!” Hu Mengmeng turned on her, her voice rising in rage. “What has she ever done wrong? Didn’t you say you don’t catch innocent demons? Why did you kidnap her? You chased her with a sword before, making her too scared to go to school for a month, and now you have people kidnap her and torture her like this! She has social anxiety; she’s timid! You’re going to make her snap! You demon hunters are always ruthless to demons—nothing you say is true!”
“Tsk tsk, look at that. A little vixen!” A lazy female voice came from the side—it was Gu Yiying. She looked at the stunningly beautiful and seductive Hu Mengmeng with surprise. “How do you know she hasn’t done anything wrong? How do you know she’s ‘innocent’?”
“She’s my best friend! As long as I’m here, no one touches her, or you’ll have to go through me!” Hu Mengmeng roared.
“If I said we were saving her, would you believe me?” Ye Xinyu panted heavily, looking as if speaking took all her strength. “If you touch those talismans, you’ll be the one harming her!”
Ye Xinyu was extremely unwell. After Hu Mengmeng left, she had gone to the Taoist doctor Shen Qingyi to buy pills and seek advice. She was hungry but had no appetite, feeling utterly drained.
That afternoon, her people had called saying they had captured Tao Tao. Actually, Ye Xinyu should have caught her the moment she injured Xu Lianlian, but she had used her as a lead to find the fox. When Tao Tao left her home and attacked someone, the team tranquilized her and brought her to Fengcheng.
Because she was unwell, Ye Xinyu called Gu Yiying to hand Tao Tao over to her. When Gu Yiying inspected the girl, she discovered something different, leading to the current situation.
Hu Mengmeng’s hand hesitated over the talismans.
“It hurts so much… I’ve never hurt anyone! Why are they bullying me? Please, let me die… death won’t hurt anymore,” Tao Tao whimpered, her voice trembling.
Hu Mengmeng’s heart wrenched. These were Demon-Subduing Talismans—how could they possibly be “saving” her?!
She didn’t believe it. She waited only a second before ripping one off. The talisman burned her hand, but she didn’t care, quickly tearing the rest away.
“Don’t say we didn’t warn you! You deal with the mess yourself!” Gu Yiying barked, jumping back and activating a protective shield.
Ye Xinyu’s face was cold as frost. She signaled the others to retreat, leaving the center of the room to Hu Mengmeng.
