President Ji’s Cat - Chapter 7
“Ji Chufeng, you’ve lost your mind!”
A man’s furious roar echoed through the office, followed by the sound of documents slamming onto the desk.
His eyes were wide with rage, and the veins in his temples throbbed as if he might transform into a wild beast and tear her apart at any moment.
The person in question, Ji Chufeng, remained perfectly composed. She slowly rotated her executive chair to meet Ji Chengye’s gaze, glancing dismissively at the papers on the desk.
The bold black characters on the document were impossible to miss:
— Notice of Dismissal. —
Five minutes ago, Ji Chengye had been in a meeting with other department heads. He had been sitting in the head seat with his usual arrogant posture, listening to reports on the development plans for the next quarter.
The harmony was shattered abruptly.
“Manager Ji, here is a document from President Ji.”
Ji Chengye recognized the person immediately as An Yi, Ji Chufeng’s personal secretary. Naturally, he didn’t offer a kind look. He glanced at the desk without even lifting a hand.
“Leave it there.”
An Yi said nothing and placed the document down.
But the moment it landed, those large characters appeared before everyone’s eyes without warning.
Ji Chengye saw the astonished looks on the faces of the directors and couldn’t help but look at the file himself.
Seeing the words “Notice of Dismissal,” he froze. To pick this specific moment and intentionally draft such a document—it was a blatant move to humiliate him and make it impossible for him to save face.
Fury quickly overrode his reason. Ignoring the ongoing meeting, he bolted out the door and charged into Ji Chufeng’s office.
To this, Ji Chufeng simply said, “Is there a problem?”
Ji Chengye’s face was contorted: “By what right are you firing me? What qualifications do you have to fire me?!”
“Since you’ve asked, I might as well tell you.” Ji Chufeng rose from her chair, her fingertips trailing across the desk as she walked toward him.
“You seem to have forgotten that you haven’t settled the payment for Liu Ming’s project yet. But did you forget—or have you already spent it?”
Ji Chufeng looked at him with a half-smile.
“As for what qualifications I have—” She picked up the crystal “Chairman” nameplate from the desk.
Seeing Ji Chengye’s face turn deathly pale as he seethed with unspoken rage, Ji Chufeng reached out to pat his lapel. Leaning in, she said syllable by syllable: “By the right that I am—the one in power at the Ji Group.”
With that, she took a step back and looked at him with a beaming smile: “If I want you gone, you’re gone.”
“You!” Ji Chengye pointed a finger at her nose, no longer bothering to play the part of the devoted brother. He hissed through gritted teeth, “Fortune’s wheel always turns—”
Before he could finish, he was interrupted by Ji Chufeng’s laughter. She laughed out loud as if she had heard something hilarious.
“Fortune’s wheel always turns.” Ji Chufeng reached out and patted his face—hard. There was no mirth in her eyes, only a bone-chilling cold light. She said one word at a time: “It’s just never going to turn your way.”
Ji Chengye already knew about the will, so he couldn’t afford a head-on collision yet. He gritted his teeth, swallowed his anger, and forced a smile. “Then let’s wait and see.”
“One day, I’ll make you regret this.” Before leaving, Ji Chengye gave her a vicious glare.
Ji Chufeng simply shrugged: “That’s what all losers say.”
She knew what Ji Chengye would do next.
After leaving the office, Ji Chengye called Xu Xiayun on his way to the hospital. When Xu Xiayun heard about the dismissal, she was livid. After some calculating, the mother and son arrived at the same conclusion.
“I’m sorry, you cannot enter.” Two bodyguards stood at the door, blocking Ji Chengye’s path.
Having been humiliated at the office only to face more frustration at the hospital, Ji Chengye barked in anger, “Are you blind? Do you know who I am?!”
“We do,” the bodyguard replied. “Young Master Ji.”
“Then get out of my way!” Ji Chengye tried to open the door again, but was blocked once more.
“Apologies. President Ji has ordered that no visitors are allowed during the recovery period.”
This didn’t sound like an order Ji Shengjun would give. Ji Chengye immediately sensed something was wrong. “Which President Ji?!”
The bodyguard looked down at him. “The current head of the Ji Group, Ji Chufeng.”
“She’s a fake! She’s just the Acting Chairman!”
“She is still the Chairman,” the bodyguard said flatly.
During the standoff, Xu Xiayun arrived.
“What is this?! What are you doing?!”
“Apologies, no visitors are allowed at this time,” the bodyguard repeated like a soulless machine.
“Do you know who I am? Move aside immediately!” Xu Xiayun delivered the exact same line as her son.
“Madam Ji.” The bodyguard paused. “You cannot enter. President Ji has instructed that for Chairman Ji’s peace of mind, he is to see no guests except for her.”
“This is house arrest!!” Xu Xiayun shouted toward the room. “Shengjun! Husband!”
After her shout, footsteps were heard from inside, and the door opened. Ji Shengjun’s secretary stood there.
The two were delighted, but before they could speak, the secretary said, “Madam, Young Master Ji, the Chairman has taken his pain medication and is resting.”
“It doesn’t matter, we’ll just go in and look!” Xu Xiayun said quickly.
The secretary looked at the two bodyguards standing like door gods and shook his head silently at them.
“Mom, since Dad is sleeping, let’s head back and come another time.” Ji Chengye grabbed Xu Xiayun’s arm, giving her a secret signal.
“Fine.” As the bodyguard closed the door, Xu Xiayun said snidely, “You people… it’s because you don’t know how to be flexible that you can only ever be watchdogs.”
The bodyguard remained expressionless, as if he hadn’t heard a word. His lack of reaction only served to infuriate her more.
The mother and son returned home in low spirits. Back at the Ji Residence, Xu Xiayun smashed a vase to vent her frustration.
“I’m going to explode!” She never imagined Ji Chufeng would go this far. She should never have let her come back!
“Mom, calm down!” Ji Chengye brought her a cup of ginseng tea. Looking at him with increasing annoyance, Xu Xiayun swept her hand out and knocked the cup to the floor.
Tea splashed everywhere.
“How did I give birth to such a spineless son!” Xu Xiayun pinched Ji Chengye’s ear, her heart full of resentment.
“Hiss… Ow, ow, ow! Mom!” Ji Chengye begged for mercy, but the more he begged, the harder she pinched. Summoning a sudden burst of courage, he straightened up and shoved her back.
“You!” Xu Xiayun looked stunned. “You dare hit me?!”
“I didn’t!” Ji Chengye froze. Seeing that Xu Xiayun was about to lose it, he quickly changed the subject to distract her. “Mom, why get so angry with her? Don’t forget Dad has already made his will. When he dies, the company still belongs to me! No matter how capable Ji Chufeng is now, isn’t she just working for me? Let her play boss for a few days; once I kick her down, she’ll realize how far she’s fallen!”
Hearing this, Xu Xiayun felt a bit better. “You said ‘when he dies,’ but who knows when that will be?”
Ji Chengye’s face darkened, a flash of ruthlessness crossing his eyes. He muttered instinctively, “It would be better if he could just die sooner.”
Xu Xiayun’s heart skipped a beat at his gaze. “Chengye…”
“Chufeng, you’re going too far treating your brother this way!” Chang Min arrived at the Chairman’s office after hearing about Ji Chengye’s dismissal, barging in without even knocking.
Ji Chufeng was reviewing documents. Hearing the commotion, she didn’t even lift her eyelids.
“Say something!” Chang Min adopted his “Uncle” authority and scolded her loudly, “I’m asking you a question!”
Ji Chufeng put down her pen, leaned back in her chair, and looked at him coldly.
“See this plate?” Ji Chufeng glanced at the “Chairman” nameplate. Chang Min clearly saw it too. She said coldly, “Get out. Knock before you come back in.”
“And—” Her brown eyes glinted with a sharp chill. “Call me President Ji.”
Chang Min’s face soured instantly, but being an old fox, he forced a smile. “Fine. You’ve only been President for two days and already you don’t recognize your Uncle.”
Ji Chufeng couldn’t be bothered with him. Rebuffed, Chang Min had no choice but to go out, knock, and come back in.
This time, Ji Chufeng adopted a purely business-like attitude. She clasped her hands on the desk and looked at him. “What is it?”
“Why did you fire Manager Ji from the Finance Department? He’s your brother.”
“Someone just asked me that.”
“I think you, as a project manager, know why he was fired better than I do. But there’s another reason—” She smiled. “I just didn’t like the look of him and wanted him gone.”
“You!” Chang Min pointed a finger at her. “Do you know your father has already written his will? You’re just making a fool of yourself! If you offend Chengye now, you’ll be the one suffering in the end!”
“Oh.” Ji Chufeng raised an eyebrow. “You said it yourself—it’s a will. Isn’t the old man perfectly fine right now?”
“Besides, it’s not certain the will can even take effect.”
“However—” Ji Chufeng raised her eyes to meet Chang Min’s, saying with a half-smile, “You, as an ‘outsider,’ are quite proactive.”
“Now that I look closely, Ji Chengye looks quite a bit like you.”
“What nonsense are you talking!” Chang Min panicked instantly. “I am your Uncle! Aren’t you afraid of karma for saying such things?!”
Ji Chufeng gave two short, mocking laughs. “You? You think you’re worthy of being my Uncle?”
She stood up, crossed her arms, and tilted her chin toward the door, no longer bothering with pleasantries. “If you don’t want the same fate as Ji Chengye, get out.”
“You… you… you truly have no respect for your elders!”
Ji Chufeng sneered. Elders? The contempt in her eyes deepened.
“President Ji.” As soon as Chang Min left, An Yi walked in with a file. “Here is the information you requested.”
Ji Chufeng hummed. The information An Yi brought was a detailed profile of Xingyao Entertainment.
Xingyao was an entertainment company under the Ji Group. It was medium-sized and had seen lukewarm development. Among all the subsidiary files, she had singled this one out, feeling quite interested in it.
Ji Chufeng had majored in Directing in college but had never truly stepped into the industry, having only filmed a short film during university that received a great response. Later, she didn’t pursue it further for one simple reason: she didn’t need to work hard like everyone else.
While abroad, Ji Shengjun sent her money regularly, and with her share of the company dividends, she lived like a fish in water without having to see that family of three.
Now that she was back with nothing to do, she naturally needed to find a project. She was still interested in the entertainment world, and Xingyao happened to be based in Yanjing, not far from the headquarters.
“Eh?” Ji Chufeng made a sound of surprise as she flipped to one of the artists.
“What is it?”
“Fu Sixue is with our company?” Ji Chufeng looked at the personal profile. If she remembered correctly, this was the female lead of the scandal on the trending topics a few days ago.
“Yes.” An Yi nodded. There was no photo in the file. “Shall I find some photos for you?”
“No need.” Ji Chufeng waved her hand. “Photos are boring.”
She stood up and grabbed her car keys from the desk. “Let’s go to Xingyao.”
Ji Chufeng didn’t give advance notice of her visit. The head of Xingyao received the news late and wanted to come down personally to greet her, but Ji Chufeng didn’t want to waste time waiting. She took her people straight upstairs.
Entering the elevator, the two stood side-by-side.
Ji Chufeng’s elegant face was expressionless, and her narrow, double-lidded phoenix eyes held no warmth. Her dark brown eyes gave off an intimidating pressure that made people afraid to approach.
She watched her own reflection in the elevator doors. Today, by chance, she was wearing that same white suit. It made her instinctively recall the events of that night, and the coldness on her face thawed slightly.
Ding—
The elevator stopped at one of the floors. The doors slowly slid open to reveal a pair of fair, slender legs, followed by a faint, lingering scent of sweet perfume.
Ji Chufeng instinctively looked up. When she saw the person standing at the elevator door, she froze completely.
