Pretending To Be Affectionate [Transmigration] - Chapter 7
Just as Gu Qing’s fist was about to hit Ling Yu’s forehead, Ling Yu suddenly opened her eyes. Under her thick eyelashes were a pair of dark, watery eyes. Ling Yu’s lips trembled, and tears of indignation welled up.
Gu Qing, who had never seen such a two-faced woman, was stunned. Just then, a “ding” sounded from the pantry down the hall, signaling that water had boiled.
Normally, VIP rooms had their own bathrooms, so people rarely came to the pantry except to heat up food. Gu Ting and Li Lan had been living in the rehab wing of this hospital’s VIP rooms for several years. Although Gu Qing came to pay the bill every month, she never stayed long. It was only after hearing the “ding” that she realized there was a pantry around the corner.
Her peripheral vision caught sight of the thermos on the floor by Ling Yu’s feet. Gu Qing’s fist, which had been in mid-air, changed direction. Instead of hitting Ling Yu’s face, it slammed into the wall next to her head.
At the same moment, Ling Yu, realizing that feigned weakness wasn’t working, got angry. Seeing that Gu Qing was really going to hit her, she instinctively bent her leg to block Gu Qing’s knee. She put her hand on Gu Qing’s slender waist and used the leverage to switch places with her.
Their movements happened almost at the same time. On the white wall, a few pieces of old paint flaked off. Gu Qing couldn’t pull back her force, and Ling Yu suddenly exerted her own.
In the midst of the pushing and pulling, Ling Yu stumbled forward a few steps, falling directly into Gu Qing’s arms and pinning her against the wall. In the cramped space, Ling Yu’s soft lips brushed against Gu Qing’s cold cheek.
Gu Qing was momentarily frozen, as if a pause button had been pressed. All of her movements came to a halt. The hospital’s heating was on, and neither of them was wearing thick clothes. The friction of their clothes and the soft touch of their chests against each other felt like floating clouds piling up.
Time stood still for a moment. Ling Yu blinked. Even with her usual social finesse, her mind was briefly short-circuited. She had originally planned to use self-defense as an excuse to pin Gu Qing against the wall, but she had miscalculated. Now, the situation had escalated.
For a “player” who had been through countless flings without getting attached, this was Ling Yu’s first technical failure, as she found herself pinned in the other person’s arms.
Ling Yu glanced at Gu Qing from the corner of her eye. The cold, fierce woman was pinned against the wall by her. Gu Qing’s eyes were half-closed, and it was impossible to read her emotions. But her chest rose and fell rapidly.
The feeling of their bodies pressed together was distinct, like memory foam pushing and rubbing. Even more suffocating was that Ling Yu’s fingers were tightly wrapped around Gu Qing’s waist. Through the fabric, she could feel the lithe curve of her waist. And below that…
The system in her mind let out a cry of despair.
“It’s over! It’s over!”
Ling Yu’s eyes flashed. She slowly tilted her head back, meeting Gu Qing’s eyes, which were as dark as ink. So close, the scent on Gu Qing’s body, a mixture of coldness and danger, filled Ling Yu’s nose. It was the scent of a mature fruit, but one laced with poison.
Even though Gu Qing was in a submissive position, the murderous intent from her upturned phoenix eyes was palpable.
Gu Qing’s features were the type of cold, imposing beauty that looked stunning without makeup. She had a kind of high-and-mighty presence. She looked like a cold and intimidating woman on the outside, but inside, she was a lunatic with zero empathy who could kill at any moment.
Ling Yu hadn’t forgotten the coldness Gu Qing showed to Gu Ting. Now that she was holding her like this, she could imagine that Gu Qing’s long nails would be on her neck in the next second.
Ling Yu reacted first, quickly pulling back her unruly hand. She tilted her small face and leaned back. Using her arm to push against Gu Qing’s shoulder, she managed to retreat, but as she did, her legs buckled. She was about to fall forward again, but she managed to brace her arm against the wall, so she fell to the side instead of into Gu Qing’s arms again.
Gu Qing took in her movements. Her clenched fist slowly relaxed. Her gaze lingered on Ling Yu’s foot, and after a moment, her tense frown softened slightly.
Ling Yu was wearing thin heels, and one of her feet was on the ground while the other was hovering in the air. She was leaning against the wall with the strength of her arm, clearly showing that she had sprained her ankle. This explained why she had suddenly turned and fallen into her arms.
Feeling Gu Qing’s appraising gaze on her, Ling Yu’s dark eyes remained watery. Her thick eyelashes trembled. “I’m sorry, I… I’m not that easy…”
“Enough,” Gu Qing cut her off. She straightened out the nonexistent wrinkles on her sleeve and took a step forward.
The distance between them closed again. Ling Yu hesitated. She wondered if they were going to fight again. It wouldn’t be surprising for a cruel and vicious woman like Gu Qing to do something to finish her off.
Ling Yu sighed, deliberately limping and taking a step to the side. It wasn’t that she was afraid of fighting, but they were in a hospital, and fighting would disturb her great-grandmother. More importantly, if they completely fell out, it would be a monumental task to get close to Gu Qing again.
A pained look appeared on Ling Yu’s face.
Gu Qing saw her “fearful” retreat. She let out a few words from her throat. “Weren’t you so brave just now? Are you scared now?”
Ling Yu slowly opened her eyes. “Huh?” she asked.
Gu Qing didn’t say anything and stopped in front of her. She bent down, picked up the thermos by her feet, and went into the pantry to fill it with hot water. When she came back, Ling Yu was speechless.
The lighting only allowed her to see one side of Gu Qing’s face. Ling Yu was frozen for a full three seconds. Gu Qing grew impatient. “Which room are you in?”
[YESSSS! Host, she’s going to take you back! This is great! Keep this up, and you’ll win her over today.]
008 cheered in her mind. Ling Yu, however, remained expressionless and pressed the mute button. She then put on a delighted face and gave her great-grandmother’s room number.
Who would have thought that in the next second, Gu Qing would bend down and put the thermos back by Ling Yu’s feet.
“How much did you hear… just now?” she asked, choosing her words carefully.
The woman in front of her had deep, impassive eyes. Ling Yu gave a stiff smile. “Not much.”
“You’re lying.”
Gu Qing stepped closer. Her deep blue eyes were like cold, polished blades. The relaxed atmosphere instantly froze again.
Under pressure, Ling Yu lowered her eyes and explained sheepishly, “I really didn’t hear much. It’s okay! Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. No three-year-old would believe the ‘jinx’ thing. You shouldn’t take it to heart.”
Gu Qing gave her a cold look. “Oh,” she said. “So you heard everything…”
Ling Yu was caught.
“Gu Ting was right,” Gu Qing said, rubbing her forehead. Her voice was unhurried. “Ling Yu, stay away from me. Consider this my sincere plea.”
Gu Qing’s face still didn’t show much emotion. Her voice was clear and slow, without a hint of humility, only a touch of weariness. Ling Yu’s clear eyes met hers, and she almost got lost in her deep blue pupils.
To be honest, no one could resist Gu Qing’s gentle plea in that moment. Ling Yu couldn’t either. For a second, she was really going to nod and agree. But then, she saw the indifferent expression on the woman’s face and came back to her senses.
This was Gu Qing, the “no-romance” protagonist, the cunning lawyer who was a master at finding people’s emotional weak spots. Ling Yu had been in a standoff with her for so long.
The odds were usually fifty-fifty. Gu Qing was not someone who would soften so easily. She would use the fastest way to achieve her goal, which was to make Ling Yu give up on her own.
Ling Yu looked away. Her expression changed in an instant. Her foxy eyes curved calmly, and a tear rolled down her cheek. She didn’t look at her, her gaze fixed stubbornly on something in the distance. She murmured, “I like someone, and so far, I can’t quit…”
As soon as she said this, Gu Qing was stunned. The gentle look on her face vanished at a visible rate, and a complex emotion flashed across her eyes.
“Then you can give it a try.”
After saying this, Gu Qing walked past Ling Yu, her shoulder brushing against her, and left.
A moment later, a nurse appeared at the end of the hallway, carrying a first-aid kit. She hurried over to Ling Yu. “Miss, how are you feeling? Can you put weight on your foot? I’ll take you to the treatment room to put some ointment on it.”
Ling Yu moved her muscles. She looked to the end of the hallway. “Did she leave?”
“You mean Ms. Gu?”
Ling Yu nodded. The nurse nodded back. “Ms. Gu left after she told me about your situation.”
Ling Yu scoffed. She picked up the thermos by her feet and handed it to the nurse with a big smile. “It’s cold. You should drink more hot water.”
The nurse’s face turned red. She instinctively looked at the thermos in her hand and gave a little gasp. This was the same medical-use thermos that had been thrown away by the nurse’s station yesterday. She couldn’t believe she had found it again.
The nurse slowly looked up, but Ling Yu had already walked away. She happily thanked Ling Yu’s retreating back.
