- Chapter 1 - It's Even Hotter Than the Dog Days of Summer
The weather in A-City is truly getting stranger and stranger.
It’s only March, the damp and rainy spring season, when everything should be flourishing with renewed life. Yet, recently it has been hotter than the dog days of summer.
The average daily temperature is around 35 degrees Celsius. The people on the streets, regardless of gender or age, are all dressed in thin, short clothing, and everyone is lamenting the weirdness of the weather.
The office building where Luo Sheng works is no exception. A fat man with curly hair and a garlic nose, Liu Jin, wiped away his sweat with a wet wipe, his small, mung bean-like eyes darting around.
After glancing around and confirming the supervisor was absent, he furtively turned on the air conditioner. The vent was right above his head. He set the temperature low, and before long, a blast of cool air rushed over him, making him sigh with relief.
“Hey, Brother Liu, aren’t you afraid of being fined again?” Little Zhang leaned over and casually asked.
“Let them fine me! I’m about to die of the heat, do I still care about 50 yuan?!”
Although Liu Jin said this, he was actually feeling nervous. Just a few days ago, the bald supervisor had caught him in the act and directly deducted fifty yuan from his salary. It would be a lie to say it didn’t hurt; after all, it’s not easy for a 9-to-6 worker to earn money.
But Liu Jin really couldn’t help it. The weather was like a furnace, practically turning the office of a few dozen people into a giant steamer. He had a lot of body fat and naturally felt the heat more than the average person. He felt that if this continued, he would be directly steamed alive.
Everyone else kept quiet. Since they could enjoy the cool air conditioning without having to take the blame, it was a beneficial situation. Since someone was willing to be the scapegoat, why try to stop them?
It was all the fault of this lousy company, which had long stipulated that the air conditioning was strictly forbidden to be turned on before summer officially began. Before, when the temperature difference wasn’t so great, it was tolerable, but the current situation was special. Yet, Supervisor Wang was completely unfeeling and refused to be flexible, instead doubling down on catching offenders. He would walk around every two or three hours to see if anyone had violated the rule.
The company’s performance hasn’t been great recently, and Supervisor Wang is precisely vying for the Department Manager position at this time. There is only one seat, and three people are competing for it. He feels quite a bit of pressure, especially since the other two competitors are younger than him.
Supervisor Wang clearly understood that if he couldn’t get a promotion now, given his age, he would likely have very few opportunities to climb higher in the future. Since performance was poor, he could only tighten up on discipline and rules, using this to demonstrate his meticulousness and diligence when reporting to his superiors, so the director would have an even better impression of him.
Although Wang Yongqiang was strict with his subordinates, it didn’t mean he practiced what he preached. Sitting in his office right now, the middle-of-the-road patch on his head was constantly sweating. He picked up several napkins and repeatedly wiped it, his eyes constantly glancing towards the door like a guilty thief.
After confirming no one was coming, he opened a hidden door in the office. This was a small room for rest, very small, with just enough space for a bed and a desk. It was a good place for a nap if you stayed at the company for lunch.
Wang Yongqiang skillfully picked up the remote control and turned on a small air conditioner mounted on the wall. The cool air rushed in, instantly refreshing the formerly stuffy room. He reached out, closed the door, locked it, and then lay directly on the bed and quickly fell asleep, a snore soon echoing in the room.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
“KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!”
The continuous knocking finally woke Wang Yongqiang up. He rolled over, grumbled as he got out of bed, hastily turned off the air conditioner, and smoothed down the stray hairs sticking up on both sides of his balding head before leaving the room.
Wang Yongqiang sat back down in his office chair, picked up a pen, and pretended to be writing notes in front of his computer, as if he had never left and had been working diligently all along. He then cleared his throat and said sternly, “Please come in.”
The office door was pushed open the next second. After seeing who the visitor was, Wang Yongqiang threw his pen aside, annoyed.
Tsk, why is she here again?
Luo Sheng held a resignation letter and formally placed it on Wang Yongqiang’s desk. Her wispy black hair partially obscured her indifferent features. Her contours were distinctly soft, but her stern expression naturally carried a sense of distance. “Supervisor Wang, please submit this report to the Director for approval.”
Her voice was as clear and cold as melted snow from a mountain, every word pronounced distinctly without any extra emotion. Wang Yongqiang felt a slight pressure when her gaze fell on him.
He reluctantly picked up her resignation letter. Upon reflection, this was the third time Luo Sheng had submitted her resignation this month, but her superior had not yet approved it. So, he had no choice but to stall for time and try to persuade her.
It wasn’t that the company absolutely had to keep her. It was simply because Luo Sheng’s performance was too outstanding. As the group’s top sales representative, she had at least a hundred high-value clients under her belt. Since joining the company, her sales revenue had reached tens of millions, and she was also the employee with the most potential to be promoted to supervisor under him.
Wang Yongqiang truly couldn’t understand why Luo Sheng, a young woman, would choose to resign at this critical juncture from such a high-paying and promising job.
Furthermore, since he himself was competing for the Department Manager position, having such an ace salesperson under him gave him more confidence.
“Sigh, Little Luo, it’s not that I don’t want to help you. I already submitted your resignation report to my superior. It wouldn’t be an issue if you resigned through the normal procedure, but you’re…” Wang Yongqiang sighed. “You only gave ten days’ notice, and you’re asking for your salary and commission to be settled by the end of the month. That’s really difficult. After all, you have so many clients. It would take at least a month to hire a replacement and transfer the work, wouldn’t it?”
“Besides, finding a job is hard right now. Why are you resigning when you’re doing so well? The company has treated you well, and with your abilities, a promotion and raise are only a matter of time. Little Luo, why don’t you reconsider?” Wang Yongqiang adjusted his glasses and spoke earnestly.
Luo Sheng frowned slightly, growing impatient. Every time she came to resign, the other party used the same excuses. She was out of patience and didn’t want to waste any more words, so she nodded and walked out of the office.
Luo Sheng walked with purpose. As she passed Lin Fu’s cubicle, the person suddenly called out to her, “Hey, beautiful Luo, why have I seen you running to Supervisor Wang’s office so often lately, and I haven’t seen you return to the apartment after work either?”
Lin Fu had long, straight black hair with blunt bangs and a sweet, harmless appearance, with two dimples when she smiled. She was savvy and highly sociable within the company, like a sharp operator, and she was the second-best salesperson in the department, only after Luo Sheng. Therefore, she was generally well-liked by most people.
However, Luo Sheng didn’t even give her a proper glance or reply, merely giving Lin Fu a cold look before silently returning to her cubicle to sit down.
There’s a saying that you don’t hit a smiling person, but Lin Fu felt as if she had been slapped hard by this person. The cold attitude instantly changed her expression, completely losing her cheerful demeanor. She suppressed her anger and glanced over at Luo Sheng, feeling deeply disgruntled.
If Wang Yongqiang successfully became the Department Manager, the Supervisor position would definitely open up. Everyone in the company knew they were rivals, and the Supervisor role would definitely be a choice between her and Luo Sheng.
Normally, although Luo Sheng appeared somewhat aloof and was even jokingly referred to by some as the “Iceberg Beauty,” her attitude towards Lin Fu was always friendly.
If there was occasional overtime work at the company, as long as Lin Fu sweet-talked her into a favor, Luo Sheng would usually agree to any request. After all, they rented an apartment in the same building, and being colleagues and neighbors, it was naturally hard to refuse face.
But recently, Luo Sheng had clearly changed. She no longer entertained any of Lin Fu’s requests, and she didn’t answer any questions; she was simply harder than a stinky, cold rock in an outhouse!
Could it be that this person was truly going to be internally designated as Supervisor by Wang Yongqiang, which is why she was acting so arrogant? The recent rumors circulating in the company felt like thorns in Lin Fu’s heart. The more she thought about it, the more annoyed she became. After secretly spitting a word of disdain, she immersed herself back into her work.
Sitting peacefully at her cubicle, Luo Sheng paid no attention to the little schemes in other people’s minds. She picked up her insulated cup and took a sip of the ice-cold jasmine tea inside. She simply waited idly until it was time to leave work.
She wasn’t willing to stay even one second longer, collecting her packed items and walking out.
…
The weather outside was scorching. After leaving the air-conditioned office, Luo Sheng was soon drenched in sweat. She bought several boxes of compressed biscuits and instant noodles from the supermarket, along with two cases of water, completely filling her car’s trunk.
Sweat dripped from her hair into her eyes. She felt uncomfortable and slightly lifted her mask to catch a breath of air. Then, she got into the driver’s seat and drove toward the apartment building she was currently renting.
Luo Sheng lived on the third floor. The place was quite old, but the facilities inside were thankfully complete. She didn’t have much stuff; she simply packed her clothes and some toiletries before finding the landlady and handing over the keys.
There was no elevator, so she had to walk.
Relieved from the burden of the rent, Luo Sheng felt much lighter. She dragged her light suitcase down the stairs, only to bump into Lin Fu, who was returning to the apartment building later than her after work.
Luo Sheng felt a bit speechless, frowning and pulling her cap lower, putting her mask back on.
Lin Fu, who had been looking down and playing on her phone, hadn’t noticed at first. As they brushed past each other, she looked up and instantly recognized Luo Sheng. She turned and called out to the person’s back, “Hey! Luo Sheng, where are you going?!”
Unfortunately, the person slipped away too fast, disappearing down the stairwell just as the words were spoken. Lin Fu scoffed, shaking her head, puzzled. “What a lunatic, so bundled up on such a hot day…”
Luo Sheng, now back in her car, was driving towards another apartment complex.
The new rental place was a bit remote. It took her almost two hours to finally reach her destination. She parked her car in the underground parking garage and wasn’t in a hurry to move the items from the trunk upstairs.
Setting other things aside, the environment and security measures of this place were indeed much better than the cheap place she used to rent. Luo Sheng took out a tissue to wipe the sweat from her forehead. Just as she was about to enter the building to take the elevator, she saw a middle-aged couple walking out.
The thin, monkey-like middle-aged man with a gold tooth and a white vest complained, “You just had to drag me out to buy clothes on such a hot day. Couldn’t it wait until another day?”
The woman next to him, with high cheekbones and a sharp face, shot him a fierce glare. “Buying clothes for our son has turned into accompanying me to buy clothes, has it? Who manages all the big and small things in this house? I ask you to come out and carry a few things, and you complain endlessly. I’m unlucky to have married you!”
“Alright, alright, how did this turn into a debate again!” The middle-aged man looked annoyed, as if his ears were ringing. “Stop nagging, I’ll go with you, won’t I!”
“Sigh, this heat is so abnormal. Could the end of the world be coming?”
“I don’t care what end of the world! Even if the sky falls, you still have to go. Hurry up and follow me, you’re so slow!”
The couple continued to bicker as they walked further away. Luo Sheng stood in place, slightly squinting her eyes as she looked up at the sky. The bright red sun hung in the air like a giant fireball, seemingly ready to burn a hole through the heavens.
She lowered her head, easing her eyes from the dazzling light, and sighed internally.
Yes, the end of the world is coming.
