- Seducing and Flirting with Boss O While Stockpiling in the Apocalypse (GL)
- Chapter 11 - Bewildering
I slept straight through until past four in the afternoon. Luo Sheng felt the sleep lasted for an entire century, and her neck was incredibly sore. The overuse of her limbs these past few days felt like it was erupting in a sudden ache.
Even standing up, her vision blurred slightly. Luo Sheng had to drink two glasses of water to dispel the grogginess. Sitting on the sofa and catching her breath, she found it amusing. With her current physical fitness, a conflict with anyone slightly more physically robust in the apocalypse would definitely be too much for her to handle.
In her daze, Luo Sheng suddenly wondered what the Strength and Speed value bars next to the sign-in palm print in the space ring meant.
Judging by the literal meaning, they should be progress bars for physical fitness improvement. Could it be that once the space level reaches a certain point, this function will be unlocked?!
Luo Sheng’s eyes lit up at the thought. Excitement instantly gave strength to her previously weak body. She lay down on the bed, assumed a push-up position, and counted the rhythm aloud, “One-two, one-two…”
Unfortunately, her slender arms started shaking violently, like a vibrating sieve, after only the second push-up.
Luo Sheng collapsed onto the bed, defeated.
…
There was still plenty of time from the afternoon into the evening, and Luo Sheng didn’t want to waste it. After changing clothes, she went out again.
This time, she wasn’t as casual as before. Instead, she acted awkwardly, constantly glancing at the door across the hall, looking very much like a thief.
The door of 1502 was currently closed tight, showing no sign of activity. Luo Sheng didn’t know if Nan Shuwan had gone somewhere else or was inside.
Luo Sheng shook her head, finding it strange. Why am I thinking about her? Where she goes is none of my business. She took the elevator downstairs.
This time, she didn’t go far, choosing instead to wander around the nearby supermarkets. After buying a few waterproof flashlights, she passed a photography equipment store. Something clicked in her mind, and Luo Sheng walked straight in.
The owner, a woman with a chin-length curly haircut, was sitting at the front desk. She wore gold jewelry on her hands and neck, looking wealthy and extravagant. She took a few puffs of a cigarette and looked up to see a customer with a cold demeanor.
“Welcome to our store. What can I get for you, Miss?” The owner immediately stood up, welcoming her enthusiastically.
Luo Sheng looked around. The tiered shelves displayed various types of cameras. She wasn’t sure how to choose. She looked at the owner, who, despite her mature attire, didn’t look very old.
Luo Sheng nodded and replied, “Do you have surveillance cameras?”
“Yes, of course, we do!”
The owner turned around, pulled a small step stool from under a table, stood on it, and reached up to the top shelf, searching for something. She wasn’t tall; even with the stool, she had to stand on her toes to reach.
After a moment, the owner handed a box to Luo Sheng. “Take a look. How about this one?”
Luo Sheng took it and opened the box, revealing a black and gray camera inside. She weighed it in her palm, finding it a bit heavy. “Do you have a smaller one?”
She planned to install this outside her door to monitor the situation, but this one seemed too large. Installing it would make it too obvious. If anyone climbed up to her floor in the apocalypse, it would probably be the first thing they smashed.
The owner nodded, went into a small storage room on the second floor to search, and came back with a new one for Luo Sheng.
“How about this one?”
“Hmm… it still feels a bit large.” Luo Sheng held it up and moved it farther away for a better look. It still felt a bit conspicuous.
The owner suddenly fell silent, half-closing her eyes, her expression becoming strange. She leaned in toward Luo Sheng and whispered mysteriously, “You… you’re not planning something bad, are you?”
What… what is she talking about?
Is she taking me for a pervert?
Luo Sheng turned her head and looked at her with an extremely contemptuous gaze, her tone sharp. “I came to buy something. Why are you spreading rumors about me?”
The owner knew she had said the wrong thing and quickly put on a smiling face, chuckling awkwardly to smooth things over. “Oh, please don’t be offended, that was presumptuous of me!” After apologizing, she explained, “I run a legitimate business here, and I don’t want to randomly guess what my customers are thinking. But I can’t help it because there are indeed people with improper intentions who try to get their hands on this kind of equipment for unscrupulous purposes. This is a legitimate store, and I certainly won’t sell illegal items, which is why I asked you a few extra questions.”
So that was it. In that case, the owner was doing the right thing.
Luo Sheng nodded and reflected that her request had indeed been ambiguous. She knew that many criminals these days used this technology for dirty deeds, so the owner’s concern was completely understandable. “I apologize, I misunderstood.”
After apologizing, Luo Sheng didn’t say anything more. She simply bought the one the owner recommended and left quickly.
…
Back home, Luo Sheng started tinkering with the camera. She didn’t want to call anyone to install it, so she decided to figure it out herself.
She stood at the doorway, observing the door frame. Her peephole only allowed her to see the apartment across the hall; everything else was obscured. The elevator and stairwell were to the side. Luo Sheng chose a spot with an open view that could capture all these areas simultaneously.
Luo Sheng brought an extendable ladder out of the house. The screws she had bought came in handy. She carefully fixed the camera’s position and then hammered it in, tap after tap.
This didn’t take much strength, but holding her arm up constantly made her elbow ache. Luo Sheng wiped the sweat from her forehead and subconsciously glanced at the door across the hall again.
Hmm, closed tight, no movement.
Luo Sheng continued hammering. Soon, the camera was secured above the door frame. She pulled out the 3D cartoon stickers she had bought and wrapped the camera on all four sides, performing a simple camouflage.
It looked good from a distance, like a cute little doll was sitting up there. Luo Sheng climbed down from the ladder, quite pleased with her handiwork.
Now that the camera was installed, Luo Sheng threaded the wires through the wireless internet port that was already on the door frame. After plugging it into the socket inside the house, the center of the camera glowed red.
Luo Sheng took out her phone, downloaded the app according to the instructions, and linked the camera. When she opened the monitor, the scene outside the door was visible. The image quality was quite clear, which added another layer of security for her.
Even though there would definitely be power outages in the later apocalypse, it didn’t matter. She would use it for as long as it worked.
After completing all of this, she felt much calmer. She had woken up from her nap at four, and now it was night again. Luo Sheng’s stomach started to rumble.
She was thinking about what to have for dinner when her phone started constantly buzzing again. Picking it up, she saw that the residents’ group chat had erupted into an argument.
[Happy Community Building 03]
0602 Sun Cuifen: Which bastard is peeing outside my door?? It stinks of piss! Confess yourself right now!! You cowards who dare to do it but don’t dare to admit it!!!
0803 Qiao Bai: Auntie, don’t rush. Check the surveillance footage!
0602 Sun Cuifen: Who installs surveillance outside their door? Also, stop calling me ‘Auntie’! I’m not that old! People these days are so rude!
0701 Wang Zhigang: Haha, maybe some righteous brother couldn’t stand an old woman like you and your flapping gums, so you got what you deserved.
0602 Sun Cuifen: You’re the one with a mouth like you’ve been eating shit! You’re always spewing nonsense. I bet the uncultured person who peed outside is you!!
0701 Wang Zhigang: Making accusations just like that? Maybe your weakling son peed there, and you’re just putting on a show for the group?!
…
The argument stopped abruptly here. There were no more text messages, but what followed were ten consecutive voice messages from Sun Cuifen, filled with vulgar insults. Her husband, He Shougen, also joined the fray. The few clownish figures kept exchanging verbal blows in the group until the property manager finally intervened, smoothing things over and forcing them to stop the war of words.
Luo Sheng’s eyelids twitched as she watched. These people were genuinely scary, their emotions easily triggered. They were the kind of people most likely to incite conflict in the apocalypse. She couldn’t help but worry about this.
Luo Sheng then put down her phone and stood by the window, looking down. The fifteenth floor was about thirty to forty meters high. She still didn’t know how high the water level would rise.
But there was no point in overthinking the unknown; she wouldn’t get a clear answer. Filling her stomach was the top priority right now.
Luo Sheng wanted something light tonight. She took out a few pieces of refrigerated white tofu, mushrooms, and farmed shrimp. She simply braised them, added a little seasoning, and made a tofu soup.
She still had leftovers from lunch in the refrigerator. Luo Sheng quickly heated them up and brought them out to eat.
She turned on the TV, intending to have some background noise for her meal, but couldn’t find anything satisfactory, so she kept flipping channels. She felt modern dramas were all boring. When she accidentally landed on the news channel, Luo Sheng involuntarily stopped.
“In recent days, multiple regions across the globe have experienced persistent high temperatures. Meteorological bureaus have activated extreme heat alerts, and natural disasters are occurring frequently. In Country A, the death toll due to extreme weather has exceeded tens of thousands… Temperatures are expected to continue rising over the next week. Please take precautions against heatstroke and cool down…”
Luo Sheng’s expression was grim. The last time news like this appeared, she felt a sense of pity but didn’t think events happening in foreign countries would genuinely affect her. Now, it wasn’t even April, and signs were appearing worldwide.
In two weeks, the entire world would be plunged into a flood apocalypse.
With a heavy heart, Luo Sheng continued eating her rice, no longer in the mood to watch TV. In less than ten minutes, she had finished everything.
After eating, she cleared the table to wash the dishes. Just as she entered the kitchen, she suddenly heard some rustling noises at the door. Luo Sheng wasn’t entirely sure, so she immediately pulled out her phone to check the surveillance footage. Having this gadget was much more convenient; she didn’t need to walk over to the peephole.
When she opened the monitor on her phone, Luo Sheng saw Nan Shuwan standing right outside her door.
She watched as Nan Shuwan acted sneakily, and then, a moment later, her expression became shy. She smiled and silently waved at Luo Sheng’s front door.
What kind of bewildering behavior is this?
Luo Sheng froze on the spot, her eyes wide, looking as if she had just seen a ghost.
