- Chapter 2 - This Really Is a Storage Space
Luo Sheng entered the elevator and pressed the button for the highest floor directly: the fifteenth floor.
After entering the code for the 1501 unit, there was a second door that required a key to open. Once inside, she locked both doors, turned on the air conditioner, and set the temperature below 20 degrees Celsius. She took off her sun-protective clothing, hat, and mask, and pulled a cold drink from the refrigerator.
The ice-cold carbonated water soothed her burning throat instantly. Luo Sheng sighed comfortably and collapsed onto the sofa.
After resting for a while, she went to wash her face, then pushed open a bedroom door. The room was nearly filled with boxes of food and water.
The food consisted mostly of compressed dry rations, which didn’t take up much space but were very filling. Luo Sheng briefly counted, figuring it should last her about two months, but it was far from enough; she still had many things to buy.
After making a simple list, Luo Sheng’s stomach started to rumble. Deciding to fill her stomach first, she took a piece of pork and a few tomatoes from the fridge and began thawing the meat in the kitchen.
The pork was ground into mince by the grinder and mixed with the diced tomatoes. Luo Sheng put some noodles into the pot, added an egg, thickened the sauce, and quickly prepared a simple dinner: tomato, pork, and egg noodles.
She didn’t waste a single bite, drinking even the soup until it was clean. The ability to sit at a table, eat noodles, and watch TV—such a mundane life—made Luo Sheng feel immensely happy right now.
However, such peaceful days were numbered.
She lowered her ink-black eyes, a trace of sadness flashing across her expression as she recalled her tragic death in the last apocalypse. The natural disaster arrived swiftly and caught everyone off guard. At the time, Luo Sheng was still working despite the heat, which surprisingly rose to over 40 degrees Celsius in the following days.
But this difficult high-temperature weather was extinguished by a sudden heavy rain. Everyone was immersed in the coolness brought by the rain, completely unaware that a greater crisis had arrived.
The rain was continuous, an unceasing torrential downpour, with an astonishing precipitation of up to 700 millimeters. The water level surged wildly during this period, submerging low-lying houses in less than a week. The streets were waterlogged, making movement impossible, and cars were rendered useless.
The floods and mudslides triggered by the heavy rain killed many people. In addition to the relentless rain, there was a sudden drop in temperature. The previously normal temperature plummeted to below minus ten degrees Celsius, and the rain mixed with hail, making the accumulated water on the streets icy cold.
However, for most people, what was more terrifying was the shortage of food, water, and electricity. In the face of the apocalyptic natural disaster, human strength was small and pitiful. For survival, moral order gradually collapsed, and human nature simply could not withstand the test in such extreme times.
In her previous life, Luo Sheng stayed cooped up in that dilapidated apartment building. The unexpected torrential rain meant she had no time to store food and could only scavenge for provisions at nearby supermarkets.
The daily heavy downpours quickly submerged the bottom two floors. People living downstairs had no choice but to climb up. They brought all the water and food they had, begging the upstairs residents for help, with eager knocking sounds echoing incessantly.
But Luo Sheng absolutely dared not open the door. Through the peephole, she witnessed the tragic state of the households across the hall after they opened their doors. A mother and daughter who kindly offered food were ruthlessly slit across the throat by looters, their corpses floating coldly in the water.
Countless people died every day in the apocalypse. No one cared about these casualties. Some people dared to commit any heinous act for the sake of survival and to fight for a bite of food.
The world in the apocalypse was like hell on earth.
Until the water level submerged Luo Sheng’s floor, out of supplies and food, she was forced to climb to an even higher floor. Full of hope, she knocked on Lin Fu’s door, thinking that since she had shared so much food with her, and even risked danger to buy supplies for her in the beginning, she should definitely help her.
But Luo Sheng was wrong. After knocking a dozen times, what awaited her was not help, but Lin Fu’s merciless kick. She disgustedly cursed “get lost” and slammed the door shut, never to open it again.
Luo Sheng, who was hungry and had been soaked in cold water for a long time, had long run out of strength. That kick hit her squarely in the chest, the force of which slammed her against the hard concrete stairs, shattering her ribs.
Grimacing in pain, she tumbled down the stairs and was pinned underwater by a large stone that had washed in from the walkway, unable to move. She ultimately faded away and died in the heavy rain.
After waking up reborn, Luo Sheng initially thought she was still dreaming. It wasn’t until the sunlight fell on her cheek and customer messages kept buzzing on her phone that she looked at the date and realized she had truly been reborn—back one month before the apocalypse.
…
After washing the dishes, Luo Sheng went straight to the underground parking garage. The sky had already darkened quite a bit. She pulled the boxes of food she had bought this afternoon out of the trunk and placed them on a small dolly.
This was a necessary measure. To avoid attracting too much attention, Luo Sheng had been moving supplies during the time when most people were home eating dinner.
She knew clearly that if people knew she was stockpiling, once food became scarce in the apocalypse, she would become a target. The first person to be looted would definitely be herself.
With human hearts being unfathomable, Luo Sheng was determined not to trust anyone in this life and only wanted to survive well.
After pushing the dolly into the elevator, Luo Sheng immediately pressed the button for her floor. However, it stopped at the ground floor first. A hint of displeasure flashed in her eyes as two people entered: the beta middle-aged couple she had seen in the afternoon.
The two were carrying many large and small bags, constantly complaining about the heat. Luo Sheng pulled her hat lower and leaned closer to the back, pulling the black cloth over the dolly even tighter.
The skinny man with the gold tooth panted, reeking of smoke. His narrow, slit-like eyes noticed Luo Sheng standing behind him. He glanced at her casually a few times, then nodded and smiled.
Luo Sheng politely returned the nod as a greeting, and then watched the couple exit the elevator on the sixth floor.
…
Back home, Luo Sheng put all the items into one room. Breathlessly, she went to take a shower, thinking she needed to increase her physical training; otherwise, moving even a few items would be this exhausting.
She sat on the bed and began to survey the layout of the apartment. She had only rented this apartment five days ago. Since time was limited, she had gone to great lengths through an agent to find this place that she was relatively satisfied with.
Only the fifteenth floor of this building had two units per floor; all the others had three units.
In her past life, she survived for less than six months, and the small size of her apartment building was a major factor in the flood damage. So, Luo Sheng specifically chose to rent the top floor. Because this unit was larger than the ones below, about 200 square meters, the rent was relatively expensive, so it had been vacant.
But Luo Sheng didn’t care about the cost now. She needed a spacious house to hoard supplies. Unit 1501, which had been empty for a long time, had no extra items apart from basic infrastructure, which made it convenient for Luo Sheng to do some secondary renovation.
Just as she was pondering what supplies to buy next, Luo Sheng suddenly took out a ring from a drawer.
The object had a clear, soft luster, a color more jade green and vibrant than a spring sprout, and it was translucent, resembling a drop of transparent green water.
Luo Sheng held it up to the light and examined it repeatedly. She found it tucked under a box while cleaning her things after being reborn.
She faintly remembered her mother stuffing this so-called “family heirloom” ring into her luggage when she came to this big city for work, saying she could pawn it for a large sum when she was ready to get married and buy a house.
In the previous life, Luo Sheng never paid attention to it, leaving it pressed at the bottom of the box. But when she put it on her finger in this life, the ring emitted an eerie green light. She felt her alpha pheromones being slowly absorbed by the thing, and then a faint aura of light enveloped it.
Then, with a thought, Luo Sheng was instantly teleported to an unfamiliar single-story large villa.
She gazed with wide eyes at the spacious area before her, feeling a little lost. Luo Sheng, feeling confused, explored every accessible part of the house.
It was split into two levels, with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room, and even a large balcony. Sunlight streamed in, and she could hear the chirping of sparrows—truly a good place for leisure and rest.
However, the strange thing was that, apart from the living room and kitchen, the other areas seemed to be blocked by an invisible screen, firmly preventing her from entering. Puzzled, she noticed a medium-sized transparent display screen in the center of the living room.
It had a blank spot shaped like a palm print, next to which was written: Level 1.
And directly below that were two stat bars: Strength and Speed.
Luo Sheng stared intently, feeling inexplicably nervous. After hesitating for a while, she finally stretched out her hand nervously and pressed her palm onto the palm-print spot.
The moment her palm print overlapped, the display screen instantly glowed blue. She heard an electronic voice announce, “Day one sign-in. Host check-in successful.”
Immediately after, Luo Sheng felt her body being abruptly ejected by something. When she looked around again, she found herself back in her familiar rental apartment.
Her mind hadn’t quite caught up yet. After recovering for a moment, she pulled out her phone to check the time. It was 8:30 PM. An hour had passed since she entered that mysterious space.
Luo Sheng then attempted several times to move herself using only her mind, but all attempts failed.
She thought for a moment and decided to try again after midnight. As soon as the midnight alarm went off, Luo Sheng immediately put on the ring and drove it with her mind. Sure enough, the next moment, she was back inside the villa.
A sense of pleasant surprise gradually welled up inside her. Luo Sheng deliberately suppressed the urge to scream.
At this moment, she was absolutely certain: This really is a storage space.
