- Chapter 3 - Must Survive Well
Ending her reflection, Luo Sheng, sitting on the bed, put the ring on her finger. She closed her eyes and was immediately transported to the villa. Familiar with the process, she pressed her palm onto the handprint. The display screen immediately announced, “Day ten sign-in. Host check-in successful.”
This time, the light emitted was slightly different. Luo Sheng saw a subtle silvery-white glow around the handprint, and then the previously displayed Level 1 number suddenly jumped, instantly becoming Level 2.
The display screen broadcasted again, “Ten consecutive days of successful sign-in. Space level upgraded to 2.”
As the voice fell silent, Luo Sheng clearly felt the living room area she was in instantly double in size. The usable space, originally about a hundred square meters, became two hundred square meters. To her surprise and delight, the barrier to the second floor had disappeared.
Luo Sheng immediately went up to the second floor and saw three more bedrooms there.
It seemed that continuous sign-ins could upgrade and expand the space. As long as she kept checking in, she wouldn’t have to worry about a place to store supplies!
The balcony was still inaccessible, but she wasn’t in a hurry. Luo Sheng returned to her bed with a thought, then went to the room where she was storing food and collected all the supplies into her portable space.
She didn’t need to physically move anything; inside the space, with just a thought, everything was neatly arranged according to her wishes, easily retrieved and put back. It couldn’t be more convenient.
This time, Luo Sheng stayed in the villa for a full two hours before being teleported out. Previously, she could only stay in the space for one hour. She hadn’t expected the time limit to double with the upgrade, and she might unlock even more functions later.
After completing all of this, Luo Sheng was satisfied. She took off the ring, locked it securely in a box, planned the supplies she needed to buy tomorrow, and fell into a deep sleep.
…
The next day, Luo Sheng did not go to work. She woke up early and went directly to the wholesale market. The market had everything imaginable and low prices, perfectly meeting Luo Sheng’s shopping needs.
She completely disregarded work now. With less than twenty days left, the world was going to end, and these things would soon become meaningless. Resigning through the normal procedure would be too much of a waste of time.
The only pity was that she couldn’t settle this month’s salary and commission. After all, tens of thousands of yuan could buy quite a bit of supplies. Luo Sheng looked at the over two million yuan in her bank account—it was all her savings from those years, originally intended for buying a house, but now she wouldn’t need it for that.
Luo Sheng didn’t know how long the natural disaster of her last life lasted. She only lived for less than half a year, but it could be one year, ten years, or even a lifetime. To ensure nothing went wrong, she could only try her best to prepare for the worst.
At the wholesale market, she first bought several hundred bags of rice and several hundred barrels of vegetable oil. Compressed noodle cakes were also essential, and she bought hundreds of boxes of various bottled and canned seasonings.
After buying the basic provisions, Luo Sheng went to the market to select fresh vegetables and frozen meats, also purchasing a lot of cured meats, which store well. Several hundred pounds of everything were loaded onto the truck she had rented in advance.
Luo Sheng had repeatedly tested the space before: fresh items placed in the villa would not spoil no matter how long they stayed there. This meant she could buy any kind of meat and vegetables without worrying about them going bad.
In her previous life during the apocalypse, to save unnecessary expenses and time, she only bought very cheap and easily stored food. The long-term lack of nutritional intake led to Luo Sheng becoming sallow and emaciated later on, with no strength left to survive.
Furthermore, during that cold disaster, countless people desperately fought over a single sip of water, making it clear that eating a variety of rich and flavorful food was extremely difficult.
Luo Sheng didn’t want to live a miserable, spiritless existence in the apocalypse. Delicious food would certainly be an excellent morale booster.
Buying so many things alone naturally attracted attention. At every shop, the owner would curiously ask what they were for, as the intense heat could easily spoil the goods, and they were difficult to store, causing others confusion.
Luo Sheng had prepared her excuses in advance. She said she wanted to donate to poor areas and needed to purchase a large quantity. At other shops, she claimed she was opening a supermarket. In short, she never gave a consistent reason, just enough to put them off.
In the apocalypse, the most important thing is water. After buying groceries at the wholesale market, she called a bottled water supplier she had looked into two days ago and purchased ten large storage tanks and hundreds of barrels of water from the boss. These items were loaded onto another truck.
Luo Sheng instructed the driver to take the goods to a deserted factory near the suburbs and simply unload them there. Her apartment was too small for such a large amount of goods, so she had found and rented this abandoned factory through an agent. It was an excellent place for temporary stockpiling.
She checked the food inside the factory, then pulled out the ring and transferred the fresh vegetables, meats, noodle cakes, seasonings, and some of the rice and cooking oil into the portable space.
In a short while, the villa’s living room, including the upstairs rooms, was completely stuffed with supplies.
There wasn’t enough space to set up all the bottled water immediately, so Luo Sheng had to hire people to fill the ten storage tanks and remove the bulky outer casings of the bottled water. All these items were left in the factory.
The weather was so hot that she had to pay double the price for every task to get people to do the work.
This shopping trip, including labor costs, totaled about one hundred thousand yuan. By the time Luo Sheng finished this round of stockpiling, it was past 6:00 PM. She checked her phone and saw over a dozen missed calls, most of which were from Wang Yongqiang, and a few were from Lin Fu.
Luo Sheng’s unexcused absence today infuriated Wang Yongqiang. She wouldn’t answer his numerous calls—this attitude of disrespecting a superior and ignoring company regulations was outrageous!
Yet, he couldn’t do anything to her. She was already determined to resign. Since he couldn’t reach her, he didn’t know where Luo Sheng was. In desperation, Wang Yongqiang remembered that Lin Fu lived in the same place as Luo Sheng, right?
So, he asked Lin Fu to try contacting Luo Sheng to see if she could be found.
Lin Fu, already curious about why Luo Sheng hadn’t come to work today, immediately sprang into action when assigned this task, but after getting no answer, she had no choice but to give up and report back to Supervisor Wang.
Lin Fu couldn’t resist prying for information from Wang Yongqiang and was genuinely shocked to learn that Luo Sheng was actually resigning.
She had always thought this person was being internally designated as Supervisor and was about to get a promotion and a raise, which was why her attitude had changed so drastically. She hadn’t realized that, in the end, Luo Sheng was quitting.
She truly couldn’t figure out if Luo Sheng had lost her mind. Lin Fu recalled seeing her sneak out of the apartment building that day and felt increasingly uneasy. What exactly was this person up to?
While Lin Fu was confused, Wang Yongqiang reported the matter to Manager Li and was predictably scolded for failing to handle such a minor issue. Though he smiled apologetically on the outside, he cursed the woman harshly in his heart.
I don’t know why she’s acting so high and mighty, Wang Yongqiang thought viciously. Once I get the Department Manager position, we’ll be equals. I’ll make you pay then!
Being reprimanded by his superior naturally left him feeling bad. Back in his office, Wang Yongqiang started cursing Luo Sheng again. It was all her fault he had been frustrated today. He then sat in his chair, crumpling up scrap paper and randomly venting his anger, looking utterly incompetent and furious.
Meanwhile, Luo Sheng, having finished stockpiling supplies, was leisurely having dinner at a small restaurant. Tired from the day, she was too lazy to cook for herself. Since she started working, she rarely had such comfortable, free time.
She figured she should enjoy herself before the apocalypse arrived.
Normally frugal, Luo Sheng rarely ate out, but today she ordered all the slightly more expensive dishes she wanted: spicy fried fish with fermented black beans, sweet pineapple and pork… and a serving of various seafood like lobster and scallops.
She ate until she was satisfied and happy, as if she were trying to fill her stomach with all the delicious food she wouldn’t be able to eat in the apocalypse.
However, Luo Sheng wasn’t a glutton, and one person couldn’t finish so much food. When she was absolutely too full to eat another bite, she finally chose to get a doggy bag to take home for lunch the next day.
She still had to buy supplies tomorrow. There were simply too many things needed, plus she had to properly renovate her apartment. Luo Sheng’s mind was constantly focused on planning all these things.
In her previous life, the disaster came too suddenly, and she never got to see her mother before she died. Her mother lived alone in the countryside, tending to a small garden. She had been hardworking and frugal all her life, so she was reluctant to come to the big city, fearing extravagance and feeling that the money would be wasted.
Luo Sheng had already decided this time: once she had everything ready, she would pick up her mother a few days in advance. Then, the two of them would work together to survive well in the apocalypse.
Carrying the packed food, as she passed a small convenience store, Luo Sheng’s gaze couldn’t help but linger on the freezer. After a moment, she finally went in and bought a few bottles of fruit-flavored drinks and beer.
Just drinking plain water was too bland. It looked like she would need to stockpile a few more cases of alcohol and beverages tomorrow.
After finishing dinner and buying a few things, the sky had already darkened by the time she returned to the apartment. Luo Sheng’s back was covered in sticky sweat; spending a whole day outside in this temperature was truly exhausting.
She felt a little disgusted by the sour smell on her body and quickly went to the bathroom to take a shower.
After thoroughly washing herself, Luo Sheng finally lay down on the bed. Tired from the day, her body was sore and weary. Looking at the various missed calls and WeChat messages on her phone gave her a headache.
She took the opportunity to delete and block all those annoying customers and a few harassing numbers. After doing so, Luo Sheng felt a sudden sense of relief.
She browsed her phone for a while, and her eyelids grew heavier. She instinctively silenced her phone, lay on the bed, and fell into a deep sleep.
Luo Sheng, now fast asleep, had no idea that a few minutes later, her phone screen flickered again. Another person was calling.
The caller ID showed: Director Nan.
