- Chapter 4 - Not a Good Impression of Her
Luo Sheng woke up feeling refreshed; the exhaustion from buying supplies yesterday had completely disappeared. She got up, brewed an iced Americano, and cleansed her stomach.
Looking at the scorching sun outside, the sunlight baked the entire land, even the leaves were slightly curled. Staying cool in the air-conditioned room, Luo Sheng didn’t feel like going out for a while. She unplugged her charging phone, intending to check the time, but saw several missed calls on the screen.
Luo Sheng couldn’t help but frown. Who was bothering her this time?
However, when she saw the saved contact name, a hint of surprise crossed her eyes: Director Nan… why would it be her?
Luo Sheng tried to recall, and a pair of extremely charming, upturned, fox-like eyes instantly flashed in her mind.
Nan Shuwan, a graduate of a prestigious foreign university, young, beautiful, and parachuted into the company’s Director position three years ago—a dazzling, attention-grabbing Omega with both ability and looks.
The vast majority of people in the company respected and feared her, simply because she was too cold-hearted. Every time there was a general meeting, she was bound to cut countless employees, meaning she wouldn’t tolerate subordinates making even the slightest mistake.
In her memory, Nan Shuwan always wore a smile that seemed gentle and full of feeling, yet her alluring appearance, coupled with her upturned eyes, should have captivated people instantly. Instead, her smile concealed a dagger, sending shivers down people’s spines, and when she cursed people, it was like a venomous snake flicking its tongue; her formidable presence was heart-stopping.
But Luo Sheng wasn’t particularly afraid of her. She just didn’t have a good impression. Since Nan Shuwan wasn’t her direct supervisor, they rarely interacted, only meeting when the entire company gathered for occasional large meetings.
However, since the Sales Department took on a few big client orders, Nan Shuwan started holding meetings with their department more frequently.
What Luo Sheng hated most was holding meetings right before the end of the workday, dragging on for two hours with unnecessary empty talk. She thought Nan Shuwan was exactly that kind of person, just like a teacher keeping students after school.
As a result, Luo Sheng, who was forced into meetings by Nan Shuwan and had to work overtime numerous times, formed a bad impression of her ever since. Even if a person is beautiful, when she’s your superior, you’ll look at her with annoyance. Luo Sheng felt this saying was spot on.
She didn’t understand why the Director herself would call her, a mere employee, just over a resignation. Did she have that much influence?
However, Luo Sheng didn’t care about any of this now. She didn’t mind what anyone in the company thought. She looked at her phone again, then decisively blocked the number.
…
“The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later…”
After calling the same number three times, Nan Shuwan finally confirmed she had been blocked. Anger colored her delicate features, her thin lips pressed into a tight line. After throwing a few sugar cubes into her coffee cup, she was so angry that she laughed instead.
The calls had been going since yesterday, but no one answered. Now, she found out she had been blocked. Aside from spam calls, this was the first time Nan Shuwan had been treated this way.
She recalled that yesterday, Manager Li had called her in a rush, her tone anxious, saying that an employee named Luo Sheng was resigning and asking what she should do.
Nan Shuwan, who was relaxing with a face mask on, preparing for a beauty sleep, felt baffled by this. “Excuse me, what are you even paid for? An employee resigning—you’re asking me what to do about such a minor issue?”
Her voice was clearly gentle, but her sarcastic and sharp words made the timid Li Wan humble herself over the phone. “Director Nan, I’m truly sorry, I didn’t want to bother you, but President Liu just specifically requested to speak with her about the collaboration, otherwise, the deal is off. I was in a panic and didn’t know what to do!”
President Liu? Nan Shuwan suddenly felt a headache coming on. She certainly knew who this person was: the head of a key project the company had been negotiating for the past month—definitely a major client. She had met him a few times herself. The talks had been very pleasant, and seeing the time was right, she smoothly handed the project over to Li Wan to manage entirely.
But this Luo Sheng… Nan Shuwan carefully searched her mind for a face to match the name. She still had a vague memory. She had heard Li Wan say she was a very strong sales employee in the department, and it seemed even President Liu was a connection she had painstakingly made. No wonder he specifically requested to speak with her—she must indeed have some outstanding qualities.
Nan Shuwan pondered for a moment, her tone softening considerably. “Regardless of her reason for resigning, as long as she agrees to come back and help close the project, immediately offer her double the salary and a thirty percent commission. We must secure this deal.”
“But…” Li Wan was very troubled. She hesitated for a long time on the phone before saying, “But Luo Sheng has blocked everyone who called her these past two days, and the same with her WeChat, including me. We don’t know how to contact her now. Her attitude towards resigning seems very firm…”
Blocked…?
Nan Shuwan instinctively raised an eyebrow. She had been lying on the sofa but now sat bolt upright.
In the current tough job market, everyone wants a stable, well-paid job. Yet, someone was giving up a promising future promotion and insisting on resigning.
And she was even giving up her end-of-month salary and blocking her company leaders. Could something have happened at home?
Nan Shuwan felt the situation was not simple, no matter how she thought about it. She asked Li Wan for Luo Sheng’s number, deciding to speak with her personally.
The confident Director Nan didn’t think this was a difficult matter, because there was hardly anything money couldn’t solve in this world. If she disagreed, the offered amount must be too low, so she would just raise it.
It wasn’t until she had called Luo Sheng a dozen times, and then found herself blocked today, that Nan Shuwan realized this person might not be so easy to handle.
However, she couldn’t find the person right now, and she had to first appease President Liu and try to delay the project.
Nan Shuwan decided to personally handle the project talks. In fact, with me here, what difference does a Luo Sheng make?
After all, any client she personally handled was almost guaranteed success. Nan Shuwan looked at the number that wouldn’t connect, irritably tossing her phone aside, and resumed organizing the proposal.
…
After planning her schedule for the day at home, Luo Sheng immediately called the door and window store owner. She had previously selected reinforced steel doors and anti-blast glass windows, and she notified the installation masters, urging them to come over at noon to install them.
In her previous life, the doors of her rented apartment were very flimsy—it felt like someone could kick them open at any moment. Luo Sheng vaguely remembered that a considerable number of residents had their doors broken down by brute force with weapons. When the late apocalypse came, forceful looting of supplies was bound to happen.
Moreover, the gravel and hail accompanying the torrential rain battered the glass windows until they were practically shaking, easily shattered. Therefore, this double layer of protection was an absolutely necessary preparation.
The heavy rain would also bring a sharp drop in temperature, eventually plunging below zero. The powerless and waterless rooms would be extremely cold, so Luo Sheng also contacted a wallpaper store that specialized in cold- and heat-insulating wallpaper, asking them to come and paste the walls tomorrow morning.
After arranging all this, Luo Sheng drove to a large general merchandise supermarket. The apocalypse brought by the massive torrential rain also required the purchase of large amounts of cold- and rain-proof items.
When the disaster struck, the huge precipitation caused massive flooding. The water level would quickly submerge the lower floors. The streets would be impassable, and convenience stores and supermarkets were basically on the ground floor, making it virtually impossible to raid for supplies.
So, this time, Luo Sheng bought dozens of boxes of rain boots, raincoats, and warm cotton clothes, along with dozens of life vests, life preservers, and life ropes. If she were ever swept away by the current, these would be life-saving tools.
Passing by a shelf, Luo Sheng also bought several boxes of water purification tablets just in case.
All the items were sent to the rented abandoned factory. After a busy morning, Luo Sheng felt a little dizzy, constantly thinking there was still something she hadn’t bought. However, being hungry, she couldn’t concentrate anymore. She went to a place near the apartment complex and casually ate a bowl of Guoqiao mixian (Crossing the Bridge Noodles), finally filling her stomach.
When taking the elevator up, two young girls, who seemed to be university sweethearts, entered.
One of them looked annoyed, pouting slightly and feigning anger. The other girl with black hair soothed her openly, sweet-talking to appease her, “Baby, I’m sorry, I was wrong, can you forgive me? Let’s go on a trip next month, as my apology, hmm?”
Hearing this, the red-haired girl’s expression finally softened, though she still let out a light humpf and turned her back, ignoring her.
Luo Sheng’s frank stare caught the attention of the black-haired girl, who smiled shyly at Luo Sheng, seemingly apologizing. Then, when the elevator reached the eighth floor, the two girls playfully nudged each other and exited.
Even as she was opening her door, Luo Sheng sighed slightly, thinking about the young couple’s conversation.
A trip next month… Unfortunately, that won’t happen…
…
Not long after arriving home, the installation masters called. Luo Sheng told them her floor, and ten minutes later, the materials were delivered piece by piece via the stairs and the elevator.
The four Alphas were hot and tired, sweating profusely and out of breath. Luo Sheng quickly offered them cold drinks to quench their thirst, then repeatedly urged and entrusted them to install everything solidly and securely.
The master grinned. “Don’t worry, once all this is done, I guarantee even a sledgehammer or bullets won’t open your door!”
Hearing this, Luo Sheng felt somewhat relieved and nodded. She paid them triple the normal wages, asking the masters to speed up the process. The doors and windows absolutely had to be installed within two days.
After giving her instructions, she didn’t stay to supervise but went back to the wholesale market to stock up on some missing groceries.
In the middle of her trip, the master called, saying two more helpers would be coming over later, or they wouldn’t be able to finish in such a short time.
Luo Sheng didn’t hesitate: “That’s fine. I’ll pay them triple wages as well. In short, please make sure to do a conscientious job and finish everything within the agreed-upon time.”
The master happily agreed and hung up the phone.
