- Chapter 5 - Seemed Quite Delighted
Nan Shuwan’s temper was hotter now than ever before. She had come out for the project and had been negotiating with that old fox, Liu, from morning until past 2:00 PM. She hadn’t even had lunch, and her throat felt scorched from all the talking!
But what was the result? President Liu had said a thousand nice things, and Nan Shuwan thought she was about to succeed, only for the man to leave her with one final comment: “It’s better if Little Luo comes along.”
It was a total bombshell!
And throughout the negotiation, Liu Xue had been constantly praising Luo Sheng to her, saying she was not only beautiful but also great at planning and had a sweet way of talking—good in every aspect. Hearing this gave Nan Shuwan a massive headache.
Yet, she had no choice but to smile, nod repeatedly in agreement, and say that Luo Sheng was their company’s most outstanding employee. It was clear that Liu Xue was determined to only close the deal if Luo Sheng was present.
Nan Shuwan had to quickly invent an excuse, saying Luo Sheng had some family matters and had taken a few days of leave to go back home. This finally bought her some time. Liu Xue smilingly agreed to discuss the project next week but specifically instructed her to bring Luo Sheng along.
At this moment, Nan Shuwan was gripping the steering wheel tightly. She thought about how, ever since she became the Director of the company, no client she personally negotiated with had ever been unobtainable.
It was unexpected that this trip had met with failure, which only made Nan Shuwan increasingly curious about this Luo Sheng. Is this person really that charming?
She had promised President Liu she would bring her next week, but now she couldn’t even find a trace of the person. Nan Shuwan clicked her tongue in frustration, genuinely not knowing how she could possibly contact Luo Sheng.
She had even asked Sales Supervisor Wang Yongqiang this morning to see if she could get any useful information. After much questioning, she learned that a young woman in the department had lived in the same place as Luo Sheng, but for some unknown reason, Luo Sheng had suddenly moved out in the last two days, and no one knew where she had moved to.
Putting all the clues together, Nan Shuwan only felt that this person was too mysterious. Resigning and moving house within a few days, it was as if she had done something illicit.
Meanwhile, Lin Fu, who had been repeatedly asked by her superiors about Luo Sheng’s whereabouts for two consecutive days, was in a mysteriously good mood. She sipped her iced milk tea, feeling incredibly pleased with herself.
With Luo Sheng gone, who else could possibly take the Supervisor position in the entire department besides herself?
When she got promoted, her salary and commission would rise sharply. Her current pay was still far from enough; she needed to save more money… Lost in her pleasant daydreams, Lin Fu’s smile widened, and her motivation at work increased.
…
“Beep beep—beep—”
Nan Shuwan hadn’t been paying attention while driving when a large truck suddenly cut into her lane to overtake. The open cargo box held several long steel pipes. Nan Shuwan nearly rear-ended it. Fortunately, she slammed the brake just in time, or she would have had an accident.
Taking advantage of the red light, the already frustrated Nan Shuwan drove up parallel to the truck, stuck her head out, and laid into the driver. “How are you driving? Don’t you have eyes? If you’re rushing to reincarnation, I can give you a free ride!”
Her hair was messy and loose, her voice had an upward lilt, and her red lips opened and closed. Her tone wasn’t aggressive, but she was smiling while cursing, which made her look strangely menacing.
The driver knew he was in the wrong and didn’t argue with her harsh words. Instead, he gave Nan Shuwan an awkward smile, sincerely apologized, and then answered his phone.
Nan Shuwan wasn’t the type to be relentlessly unforgiving. After hearing his apology, she pulled her head back inside.
The ninety-second red light felt exceptionally long at that moment. The outside air rushed into the car like a hot tide, and Nan Shuwan quickly rolled up her window, unable to tolerate the heat.
Just before the window completely closed, Nan Shuwan clearly heard the driver say into his phone, “Ms. Luo, sorry, there’s a bit of a traffic jam right now. We’ll get there as soon as possible.”
Ms. Luo…?
Nan Shuwan quietly repeated the three words, her mind immediately starting to wonder. Could there be such a coincidence in the world?
Her sixth sense grew stronger, and she felt a faint excitement building up. She adjusted her seat for comfort. When the light turned green, the large truck immediately started moving, and Nan Shuwan stepped on the gas, following right behind.
…
Luo Sheng was sweating profusely and exhausted. Having just left the outdoor supermarket, she had bought dozens of inflatable rafts, a dozen waterproof binoculars, and several boxes of safety goggles.
In the past few days, she had spent another ten thousand yuan or so on the secondary renovation of the house. She glanced at her increasingly dwindling bank balance, thinking she needed to plan her future supply purchases more carefully.
However, these were all necessities. In the flood apocalypse, no matter how expensive your car was, it would be useless because the waterlogged roads made driving impossible. Simple inflatable rafts, conversely, would be the most convenient mode of transportation.
And if looters forcibly broke into her apartment, this would serve as a means of escape.
Luo Sheng estimated that the water level from the torrential rain would certainly exceed the fourth or fifth floor. With a life vest and an inflatable raft, if she encountered unavoidable danger, she could relocate, which would greatly increase her chances of survival.
Midway through transporting the goods to the abandoned factory, the helpers the installation master had called for phoned her, saying they would be late due to traffic. She checked the time—it was already past 5:00 PM. The masters should have all arrived by now.
She urgently wanted the progress to be faster so she could free up more time in the coming days to think about anything else she hadn’t secured at home.
The blazing fireball in the sky seemed about to melt the ground. Luo Sheng shifted her thoughts and immediately entered the villa. After signing in as usual, she sat on the living room sofa, enjoying the air conditioning and planning to rest for a while.
Currently, every available space in the villa was almost entirely packed with supplies, making it difficult to find a place to stand. However, the basic amenities were complete, and during the two hours she could stay, there was even water and electricity.
Luo Sheng took advantage of this time to take a cold shower in the bathroom, washing off all the sweat. Then, she casually took a cold drink from the fridge and finished half of it in one go.
Since her rebirth, Luo Sheng always thought the portable space was a precious gift from the heavens. Since fate itself deemed that she should not die, she was determined to live well and not let this hard-won second chance at life go to waste.
After a quick rest, she drove back.
Although she had been cautious these past few days while buying supplies, she couldn’t completely avoid the questions from shop owners. Buying a stack of clothes and shoes that were completely out of season in the intense heat naturally raised suspicions. Fortunately, Luo Sheng was generally able to handle the questions.
In any case, she would face whatever came her way. Everyone would likely never see each other again anyway.
It took about an hour to drive back to the apartment complex. Luo Sheng checked the time; it was nearly 7:00 PM. She figured the installers would be wrapping up their work for the day soon, as continuing past this hour would likely lead to noise complaints from many residents.
She parked her car in the underground garage. As she entered the complex, the security guard greeted her with a smile. “Proprietor, on this hot day, how come I see you running out every day?!”
“No choice, I have too much going on. If I could, I’d also just want to sleep in the air conditioning all day,” Luo Sheng replied with a faint smile.
Although Luo Sheng was somewhat aloof, she could easily be friendly when needed—otherwise, how could she have been the company’s best-performing ace salesperson? Besides her solid planning skills, charming people with a few words was not difficult for her.
After parking the car, Luo Sheng bought a few bottles of drinks at a small convenience store downstairs, planning to take them up to the masters to quench their thirst. Simple social etiquette like this had to be taken care of.
For some reason, even though it was evening, the sky was still bright as day, showing no sign of darkening. Luo Sheng looked up at the sky again, then carried her bag and entered the apartment building.
While waiting for the elevator, she felt the back of the person standing in front of her was somewhat familiar, but she couldn’t quite place who it was, so after a few extra glances, she dismissed it.
When the elevator finally arrived on the ground floor, Luo Sheng lifted her foot to enter. The woman in the long dress and slender figure stepped into the elevator one step ahead of her, but she was walking with a limp, appearing to have injured her leg.
Luo Sheng hadn’t yet settled her bag when the elevator gave a slight shake, causing the woman to lose her balance and stumble sideways. Luo Sheng instinctively reached out and steadied her waist. Just as she was about to let go, she saw a familiar face.
Exquisite and charming features, upturned fox-like eyes, the entire person as gorgeous as a red rose.
So, who else could this person be but Nan Shuwan?!
Luo Sheng’s pupils widened. In her shock, she instantly withdrew her hand.
Meanwhile, Nan Shuwan, whose ankle was twisted, lost her balance and was in pain, leaning sideways. She hadn’t expected to be suddenly supported. She instinctively turned her head and a cold, clear face came into view.
The person had dark hair and fair skin, a high nose bridge, and some strands of hair draped over her pale, delicate neck. Her lightly trembling eyelashes resembled the glacial water melting and rippling beneath a snowy mountain.
With just that one look, Nan Shuwan immediately recognized her.
She remembered there was indeed such a cold, indifferent, and stern-faced employee in the company. That person’s image gradually overlapped with the face before her now. A smile slowly bloomed on her face, but her neck was covered in a thin layer of crystal sweat from the pain. This appearance of enduring pain only made her seem more captivating.
Her arm was still resting on the other person’s arm. Her eyes slightly narrowed, seeming quite delighted. Finally, she asked in a soft voice, tentatively, “You’re Luo Sheng, aren’t you?”
