- Chapter 6 - You Should Come In First
Luo Sheng’s expression quickly darkened. She stood in the corner of the elevator, holding her bag, putting distance between herself and Nan Shuwan. She forced herself to keep her expression in check, and her gaze, when it swept over Nan Shuwan, clearly held displeasure. Then she said coldly, “Are you stalking me?”
She had gone to great lengths to move, intending to keep a low profile in a place full of strangers and not reveal her whereabouts to people from her former company.
Now that her efforts had been thwarted, Luo Sheng couldn’t help but feel annoyed. All she wanted now was to peacefully hoard supplies; she had no interest in anything else.
Nan Shuwan was stunned for a moment. The other person’s impolite attitude made her feel baffled, and a huge accusation had been instantly leveled at her.
It was a waste that she’d had a fleeting good impression of the woman moments ago due to her beauty. Luo Sheng’s harsh tone immediately extinguished the few remaining sparks of goodwill in Nan Shuwan, a person who appreciated beauty.
Having been a leader for so long, she couldn’t tolerate being treated like a stalker. She retorted without yielding, “Are you overthinking this? Why would I need to stalk you?” Nan Shuwan narrowed her eyes and scoffed again. “I came to find you for an urgent matter. How about we go to your place and have a proper talk first?”
Luo Sheng refused without thinking. “No need.”
“You…!”
After being given the cold shoulder by Luo Sheng repeatedly, Nan Shuwan was genuinely annoyed. She hadn’t even said anything, yet this person wore a straight face the entire time, acting as if Nan Shuwan owed her money!
She was about to lash out, but two more people entered the elevator.
Nan Shuwan reined in her expression, coughed a few times, and stepped back. Her ankle, bruised and purple, was still throbbing with pain.
It was truly bad luck. She had followed the delivery truck for almost an hour, but when she reached the destination, she was blocked outside, and the security guard refused to let her in.
“The people ahead have a resident to vouch for them, so they can pass. Strangers are not allowed to enter this complex freely!”
The security guard’s attitude was firm. Nan Shuwan watched the two installers walk farther and farther away, growing anxious. Now she wouldn’t be able to figure out exactly which floor Luo Sheng was on.
She strained her neck, constantly glancing back, and managed to see which building they entered.
Nan Shuwan irritably shifted her gaze back to the obstructive security guard and looked at the name of the complex with a surprised look. She was utterly bewildered—these were just ordinary apartment buildings; why were they so strict?!
“Big Brother, I have a friend who lives here, and I came specifically to see her today. Please, just let me in, alright?” Nan Shuwan took a few deep breaths, trying to force a friendly smile and keep her voice calm and reasonable.
Little did she expect the security guard wouldn’t fall for it. “You say you have a friend living here? Then call her in front of me to prove it, and I’ll believe you!”
Hearing this, Nan Shuwan was about to die of anger. The man had a typically square-shaped face and an equally rigid personality!
It had just been an excuse she made up; she didn’t have any friends living here! Unable to maintain the lie, Nan Shuwan had to pull out her trump card. She smiled sweetly, pulled a red banknote from her bag, and handed it over. “Could you be flexible, alright, hmm?”
The security guard glanced at it. “Just one?”
Hearing that was unbelievable. Nan Shuwan’s expression was as if she’d seen a ghost. Unable to do anything else, she ground her teeth and added another bill.
Instantly, the security guard’s attitude did a 180-degree turn. He laughed heartily, opened the gate, and let Nan Shuwan in.
She rolled her eyes and scoffed, having almost genuinely believed the man was so incorruptible. As expected, money was the answer.
Her small car quickly drove into the underground parking garage, which was pitch black. When Nan Shuwan got out of the car, she accidentally kicked a small concrete marker pole, causing her to lose her footing and twist her ankle, leaving a bruise.
So now, as she shifted her weight in the elevator, she accidentally leaned towards Luo Sheng again. The other person reacted as if some monster was pouncing on her, her expression unchanged, immediately shifting away and letting Nan Shuwan hit the wall instead. Her avoidance skills were apparently maxed out.
“Hiss—” Nan Shuwan let out a sound of pain from the impact.
The other two people were the young college couple again. Seeing the two women’s behavior, combined with Luo Sheng’s frosty face that looked like she was angry, they assumed the two were lovers having a spat. The girl with black hair smiled at Nan Shuwan, “It’s alright, lovers quarrel but make up in bed. My girlfriend and I also argue sometimes.”
After saying that, she gave the red-haired girl next to her a meaningful look, which earned her a dagger-like glare in return.
Nan Shuwan smiled awkwardly, not knowing what to say. Luo Sheng didn’t even turn her head, looking straight ahead with an indifferent air, as if it had nothing to do with her.
When they reached the eighth floor, the two college sweethearts left the elevator, still sticking together. Nan Shuwan and Luo Sheng stood in a frozen atmosphere, not saying a word until they reached the thirteenth floor.
As Luo Sheng stepped out, she gripped her bag tighter and sighed slightly. The impatience in her eyes intensified as Nan Shuwan followed her, looking ready to explode.
Her front door was wide open at the moment. The workers were just coming out, one by one wiping sweat with wet wipes. Seeing this, Luo Sheng quickly distributed the drinks from her bag.
The cold drinks were downed quickly. The lead installer came over to Luo Sheng and said, “Boss, we’ve installed the glass windows for you, and half the wallpaper is up. But the door is a big job, and it will take another two days. We’ll come back tomorrow morning.”
“Okay, everyone, thank you for your hard work. You should go home and rest.”
Nan Shuwan, left ignored in the back, had to poke her head out to listen to what they were saying. Just as she was about to get closer, the group of installers flooded past her on their way downstairs. She had to step aside to let them pass.
Now it was just the two of them again. Luo Sheng turned and quietly looked at her, which strangely made Nan Shuwan feel nervous. Her eyelashes fluttered, and her heart beat a little faster. Why hadn’t I noticed before that this person had such a strong presence?
Nan Shuwan cleared her throat. “Now we can…”
Before she could finish, with a slam, the door was shut.
Luo Sheng had walked straight into the house without any warning, disappearing from Nan Shuwan’s sight.
Standing alone outside the door, Nan Shuwan’s composure completely broke. She stretched out a trembling finger and couldn’t help but curse, “Damn it… Asshole, absolutely an asshole!”
…
Inside the house, Luo Sheng ignored the person outside, estimating she would leave on her own in a few minutes.
She sat on the sofa, rubbing her forehead with a headache, feeling extremely tired. There were too many necessary supplies she still needed to list and properly organize. Having to worry about so many things alone was overwhelming.
Furthermore, her daily expenses were unusually high, and Luo Sheng was worried that her savings might not be enough to cover the quantity of supplies she needed.
And then there was… Nan Shuwan. Thinking of this person, a trace of displeasure flashed in Luo Sheng’s eyes.
As the company’s Director, if she had found her residence, it would be easy for the news to spread. When it came to clients, these people were all relentless.
Having worked in this industry for many years, Luo Sheng knew how shameless they could be, using every possible tactic to close a deal. She was a bit worried about whether different people would take turns harassing her over the next few days.
This was truly troublesome. Luo Sheng kept brainstorming solutions, but her stomach inconveniently started rumbling. After being busy all day, she still hadn’t had dinner. She got up, deciding to fill her stomach first.
Even if the sky falls, you have to eat well.
Luo Sheng took two potatoes from the fridge, sliced them, and fried them in oil over medium heat. She didn’t add too many seasonings, just cooking salt and light soy sauce. Once cooked, she simply sprinkled some chopped scallions and took them off the heat.
Next, she took half a frozen hairtail fish. After thawing and cleaning, she used a knife to remove the back spines and internal organs. She used all the peppercorns, scallions, ginger, and cooking wine, marinated them for a few minutes, then mixed them by hand in a bowl until each fish piece was coated in batter. She then fried them in the hot oil until both sides were golden brown, and the aroma instantly filled the air.
The meal was made relatively quickly, taking only about forty minutes.
Luo Sheng was satisfied, carrying the two dishes to the dining table. After serving a bowl of white rice, she took a can of cold beer from the fridge, ready to enjoy her dinner.
Just as she sat down, she heard a knock, knock, knock coming from the door. She walked to the door, annoyed, but when she looked through the peephole, she saw no one outside. Luo Sheng stared suspiciously for a moment, and after confirming nothing was there, she turned to walk away.
She had only taken one step when the knocking sound started again, this time knocking repeatedly over a dozen times.
Luo Sheng placed her hand on the doorknob. This time, she opened the door without a word.
Nan Shuwan was squatting on the ground, looking up at Luo Sheng. Her fox-like eyes were glistening with moisture, her face was delicate and beautiful, and her expression looked somewhat wronged. Seeing the usually high-and-mighty Director Nan appear this way was a complete contrast.
Luo Sheng was surprised. “Why are you still here?”
The person squatting on the ground had tiny beads of sweat on her forehead, and upon closer inspection, her lips were pale. Nan Shuwan felt extremely embarrassed at the moment. Frowning slightly, she seemed reluctant to answer Luo Sheng. “I… My stomach ache flared up, and my foot hurts too much to walk. I had to squat here to rest for a bit…”
She managed to stammer out the reason. Nan Shuwan’s words weren’t false; this was an old issue of hers. When she first started working, she pushed herself too hard, and she never liked hot drinks, so she often drank iced coffee late at night, which ruined her stomach.
A sudden cramp in her stomach had caused her to collapse onto the floor. Coupled with her sprained ankle, she only recovered after squatting there for a long time. Knocking on Luo Sheng’s door was an act of desperation. At this moment, Nan Shuwan desperately wanted a place to sit and rest.
Luo Sheng pursed her lips, seemingly doubting the truth of her words, but the person’s pale face was undeniable. She gripped the edge of the door frame tightly, her eyebrows practically twisting into a knot.
She was currently struggling internally, but after a long internal battle, she finally sighed, softening, and reached out a hand to Nan Shuwan squatting on the ground. “You should come in first.”
