- Chapter 9 - Keep Telling Herself to Calm Down
The street was indeed very lively, with a dense crowd packed together. Luo Sheng could barely move. The evening was certainly cooler than the daytime, but it was still somewhat humid.
There were many small stalls selling snacks on the roadside. Although Luo Sheng had come out for a walk after eating, she couldn’t resist buying an egg-wrapped sausage. It was quite tasty with mayonnaise on top.
After a few bites of the savory food, she started to feel thirsty. Luo Sheng didn’t consider herself a health enthusiast. At the company, because of her aloof, “do-not-disturb” aura, her colleagues always treated her like one of those serious, old-fashioned officials, assuming she disliked activities and food popular with young people.
But this was not the case. Luo Sheng was simply a bit slow to warm up. She wouldn’t miss out on eating or having fun when she wanted to. At that moment, some of the open-air stalls had low tables and chairs set up. Luo Sheng casually sat down on one of the chairs to rest her feet and hailed the owner for a bowl of iced jelly dessert.
It came with all the toppings: watermelon, nata de coco, taro balls… topped with a few spoonfuls of brown sugar syrup. It was refreshing and cleansed the palate perfectly.
As Luo Sheng sat there, crowds of people passed in front of her. Soon, a little girl holding her mother’s hand walked over, whining that she wanted iced jelly too. The mother disagreed, saying children shouldn’t eat things too cold late at night as it would hurt their stomach, but she promised the girl they could go out for fried chicken next week.
After struggling for a few minutes, the little girl gave in and left with her mother.
Luo Sheng scooped a spoonful of the iced jelly into her mouth, feeling the cool sweetness, but a sense of sadness welled up inside her. A flash of pity crossed her lowered eyes. The sight of these bustling, happy families would soon turn into ruins.
Since her rebirth, all Luo Sheng had focused on was ensuring her mother and herself survived the apocalypse. Everyone else was irrelevant to her.
But calming down today and sitting here to enjoy some street food, Luo Sheng felt a long-lost sense of life’s normalcy. A pang of compassion emerged, and a ridiculous thought popped into her head: If I could contribute my small strength to save some innocent lives, it wouldn’t be a bad thing…
However, this wave of overflowing sympathy only lasted a few seconds, vanishing like a bubble. She was not a saint, let alone a savior. She could barely take care of herself, so how could she possibly look out for others?
Luo Sheng lifted the plastic bowl, finished the remaining iced jelly, and went to pay the owner.
…
It only took about ten minutes to walk back to the apartment complex. Luo Sheng glanced at the security guard dozing with his feet propped up in the guard booth, then entered the building and pressed the elevator button. The dim yellow light overhead was flickering, seemingly due to a loose connection. She paid it no mind and stepped into the elevator.
The door slowly closed. Just as it narrowed to a crack, a coarse hand suddenly reached in. Luo Sheng was startled. Following closely behind, a large, bald man with a coarse face and a scruffy beard entered, smelling strongly of alcohol.
Luo Sheng instinctively backed away a few steps. The bald man groaned and bent over, looking uncomfortable. His large hand fumbled for the buttons and finally pressed the seventh floor.
The elevator began to ascend. The man let out a few more alcoholic burps, and the air inside instantly became foul. Luo Sheng frowned, wishing the elevator would speed up, desperate to reach her floor immediately.
Perhaps Luo Sheng’s frequent shifting of her feet caught his attention. Once the bald man recovered, he suddenly focused on her. His bloodshot eyes stared fixedly, completely disregarding whether it was polite to brazenly scrutinize a stranger.
“Are you new… hic… to the building?” The bald man patted the back of his head and rolled up his sleeve, revealing several tattoos on his arm. His slightly lecherous gaze traveled back and forth across Luo Sheng’s face. “Everyone will be living in the same building from now on. We can all… help each other out.”
With that, he extended his thick, large palm, inviting her to shake hands.
Luo Sheng’s expression darkened, and her eyes were cold, as if shrouded in a dark cloud. She looked at the man’s thick arm and protruding belly, having to constantly tell herself in her mind to calm down.
The elevator space was narrow. If a conflict broke out, it would not be in her favor.
The bald man saw no reaction from Luo Sheng, and his feigned friendly expression instantly turned sinister. He balled his hand into a fist and took a large step toward Luo Sheng, who was standing in the corner. His gaze greedily lingered on her beautiful face. “You won’t show me respect?”
The sudden closeness and the rancid smell made Luo Sheng feel nauseous. She took a few deep breaths, stabilizing her emotions, then replied calmly, “Since we are all residents of the same complex, we are neighbors. If anyone runs into trouble, I will naturally help.”
Luo Sheng’s tone was neither subservient nor arrogant, but her polite reply did not seem to satisfy the bald man. Fueled by alcohol, his actions grew bolder, and his large body moved as if to press against her.
Luo Sheng inwardly cursed. Her eyes were fixed on the bald man’s movement, and her knees and arms began to tense up. If he took another step, she was ready to kick him hard in the groin. She was determined to instantly turn this disgusting man into a eunuch!
At this critical moment, the elevator dinged, and the door slowly opened. Luo Sheng saw the same middle-aged woman with high cheekbones from last time enter. She was holding a small child in her arms, cradling him like a treasure, presumably her son.
The bald man immediately restrained his movements upon seeing someone else arrive. His sudden clarity showed he was far from incoherent.
Truly drunk people barely have the energy for malicious intent; most men just use it as an excuse to let off steam. Luo Sheng knew this full well. She silently stepped back a few paces, giving way to the middle-aged woman.
Unexpectedly, the woman smelled the alcohol and immediately started yelling, “Which rotten bastard made this elevator smell so awful? If this fumes up my son and affects his health, I will not let him get away with it!”
The middle-aged woman’s voice was hoarse and her expression vicious, spitting as she spoke. This managed to stun the bald man. He was the only one who had been drinking in the elevator, so who else could she be deliberately yelling at?
His eyes widened, his voice louder than a loudspeaker. He pointed at the woman, his face menacing, and retorted, “Sun Cuifen, don’t think I don’t know you’re talking about me! This is the first time I’ve heard that the smell of alcohol can affect someone’s health! If that’s true, you should just throw away that useless son of yours. You’re wasting your time raising him!”
Hearing someone insult her son completely hit a nerve with Sun Cuifen. Especially since the child was already crying loudly, scared by the bald man, making her even angrier. She practically jumped up, sneering, “You’re full of it! Does my son’s usefulness need you to comment? And you, Wang Zhigang! You’re useless yourself, you just drink all day and beat your wife! Now your wife ran off with someone else, and you’re making a drunken fool of yourself here! You deserve to be cuckolded!”
Sun Cuifen’s words completely struck Wang Zhigang’s nerve. His whole face seemed to inflate like a balloon. The pockmarked skin instantly turned crimson with rage, making him look terrifying. His thick arm swung a huge fist wildly. “Sun Cuifen, you old hag! I’ll tear that cheap mouth of yours to shreds!”
Luo Sheng was completely forgotten in the corner, like a bystand watching a show. Sun Cuifen grew terrified when she saw he was truly losing control. She quickly pressed the button for her floor, the sixth, which the elevator reached just as his large fist was about to strike her face. Sun Cuifen cursed under her breath and scrambled out with her beloved son.
Wang Zhigang was consumed by rage and lunged out after her. Seeing this, Luo Sheng quickly pressed the door-close button. Only when she was alone in the elevator did she let out a long, shaky breath.
When she got back home, Luo Sheng immediately drank several glasses of water. After resting for a few minutes, she felt like she was covered in something dirty, so she rushed to the bathroom and took a thorough shower.
The incident in the elevator served as a reminder to Luo Sheng: her physique and strength were completely no match for a high-fat Alpha weighing hundreds of pounds. If someone like that came to steal her supplies during the apocalypse, her chances of winning would be minuscule.
It seemed she had to buy some weapons for self-defense and step up her training to improve her physical strength…
Luo Sheng thought while drying her wet hair. After blowing it dry with a hairdryer, she tucked herself into bed. Her phone on the table was buzzing constantly, which Luo Sheng found odd. Hadn’t she left all those company WeChat groups? Where were all these notification sounds coming from?
She rolled over and pulled the phone, which was 80% charged, down. Looking at the WeChat interface, she saw she had been added to a new group by the property management. The group name was: Happy Community Building 03 Residents Group.
It seemed this group included all the residents of this building. She had only rented the place recently, and the property management must have forgotten and only just added her today.
Luo Sheng tapped on the group member info and scrolled down, seeing that every person’s nickname followed the format of room number plus name. When she reached the second page, she saw 0602 Sun Cuifen and 0701 Wang Zhigang.
Weren’t those the names of the two people from the elevator just now?
Just as she was about to scroll further, the property management sent her a private message: “Resident, please change your group nickname according to the format when you join the group. You can @ me directly in the group if you have any issues in the future. Thank you for your cooperation!”
Luo Sheng stared at the message, hesitating, because she wasn’t keen on changing her group nickname. Putting her room number and full name there felt inexplicably insecure.
However, there was no helping it. Since everyone else followed the format, her being the only one not to change it would only draw more attention.
After much deliberation, she suddenly remembered that the apartment across from hers had been empty and unrented for a long time. Luo Sheng’s eyes flickered. Taking a chance, she changed her group nickname to: 1502 Luo Xiaosheng.
