The Supporting Female Character Wakes Up and Gets a Happy Ending with the Female Lead (GL) - Chapter 4
As soon as the first period of evening self-study ended, Lin Ji took the Chinese specialized practice test paper she had finished that afternoon and walked toward the office.
“She actually did it?”
Zhang Yu stood up, about to go to the staircase landing to get water. He spotted Lin Ji leaving with the test paper and immediately forgot about the water. He sat back down and leaned over his desk, looking like he was plotting something significant.
“Hey, did you guys see that? Lin Ji left with a test paper. When has she ever handed in homework or done a test? Did the fever today make her ‘wake up’? Does she not want to waste time anymore?” Zhang Yu held his water cup, eyes fixed on the people gathering around him, his voice very low.
Sheng Sheng shook her head, indicating she didn’t know, and crossed out an English word in the cloze test she was working on: “You’re so curious, why don’t you go and check it out?”
“If I follow her, won’t I just be asking to be cursed at?” Zhang Yu shook his head, unwilling.
“How can that be?” Sheng Sheng said. “You have to go get water anyway. It’s too crowded for water here by the stairs. Isn’t it normal for you to go to another floor to get water?”
Zhang Yu held his cup and pondered for a few seconds. He gave Sheng Sheng a thumbs-up: “Makes sense. I’m just a thirsty guy getting water! I’ll go scout for information now. Please wait patiently, sirs!”
With that, Zhang Yu darted out.
The senior year office was on the first floor. Lin Ji descended from the third floor and paused at the stairwell for a few seconds.
Her current situation—not targeting Ji Baixing, not constantly chasing Li Yu, and uncharacteristically doing problems all afternoon—these obvious deviations from her character setting seemed to have met with no restriction whatsoever.
Lin Ji looked down at her test paper. It was a specialized reading comprehension test with three passages and six multiple-choice questions. She was confident she got them all right.
But what she couldn’t be sure of was: if she made dramatic, rapid progress in the upcoming exams, would she then be restricted? What if she turned back into the old Lin Ji…
Lin Ji bit her lower lip, clenching her hand tighter.
Lost in thought, she suddenly heard the office door open.
“Lin Ji, are you coming over to hand in your test paper?” Ji Baixing pushed open the office door, looked surprised to see Lin Ji standing not far away, and walked toward her. “Why are you standing at the doorway? Aren’t you going in?”
Lin Ji looked up and met Ji Baixing’s gaze. After a few seconds of silence, she suddenly said, “Class President, do you have time to help me look over some problems? I have a question.”
If exposing a different character setting in front of the female lead was not a problem, then she wouldn’t have to worry about anything else.
Ji Baixing’s expression clearly froze. She looked at Lin Ji with some surprise, then, perhaps realizing something, smiled and readily agreed: “Of course. Let’s go back to the classroom first; I’ll explain it to you there.”
“M-hm, thank you, Class President.” Lin Ji put away the test paper and followed Ji Baixing upstairs.
Ji Baixing’s hair must be quite long. Even in a high ponytail, the ends brushed her waist slightly.
The ends were slightly curled but looked very soft and smooth. A finger could probably slide straight down through it. Her hair was glossy black. The long, gently swaying ponytail occasionally revealed a section of her almost snow-white neck as she walked.
Ji Baixing suddenly looked back. Lin Ji instantly withdrew her gaze and looked at Ji Baixing’s eyes with a calm, cold expression: “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, just wondering if you mind me sitting at your seat to explain the problems later?” Ji Baixing rested her index finger near her chin, tilting her head as if contemplating, “When I came down, my deskmate Zhang Zhihang said Sheng Sheng needs his help with a question during the next evening study, so my seat might not be convenient for explaining problems to you.”
Lin Ji inexplicably felt relieved. She nodded: “M-hm, that’s fine.”
Zhang Yu, who had crept to the corner of the staircase on the first floor holding his water cup, saw the two standing face-to-face, having a friendly conversation, and immediately ran back to the classroom, forgetting to get water.
As soon as he reached the classroom, he frantically jumped into his seat, panting slightly: “Ha… guess what I saw!”
“Got into a fight with the Class President again?” Sheng Sheng said without even lifting her head. “The Class President went to the office too. It’s normal if they clashed.”
Zhang Yu waved his hand: “If that’s what I saw, would I make you guess?”
“Then what did you see? It couldn’t possibly be that they were peacefully discussing and reviewing homework problems, right?” Zhao Qian, who was sitting in the front row, turned around and said jokingly.
Zhang Yu heavily slapped his desk, his tone affirmative: “That’s exactly right!”
“I was secretly following them to the corner on the first floor when I heard the Class President call out Lin Ji’s name as she walked over. And Lin Ji! She wasn’t angry at all! Instead, she asked the Class President in a very friendly voice if she could explain problems to her.”
“Isn’t that still picking a fight with the Class President? When has Lin Ji ever asked the Class President for help without sitting there completely ignoring her, trying her hardest to waste the Class President’s time?” Sheng Sheng argued.
Zhang Yu shook his head, disagreeing: “It’s different! The tone is different! Before, the tone clearly meant she was looking for trouble, but today it was different!”
“Look, don’t not believe me! You’ll know once they come up. My super-hearing heard everything clearly!” As Zhang Yu spoke, he unscrewed his water cup and was about to take a sip when he realized he had forgotten to get water. But the class bell had already rung.
Just as Zhang Yu planned to sneak out to grab a drink before the teacher arrived, he stood up and saw Ji Baixing and Lin Ji walking in one after the other.
Ji Baixing had a soft appearance and a gentle, quiet personality. The moment she appeared in everyone’s sight, she looked like a serene, peaceful, and relaxed ink-wash painting.
Lin Ji was different. Her eye corners slightly slanted up, her eyebrows were delicate and curved. When she didn’t smile, she looked naturally stern, exuding an intimidating aura that warned people to keep their distance. Her facial features were stunning and aggressive, making people feel a sense of admiration but hesitant to approach her.
However, if Lin Ji lowered her eyes and smiled faintly, she suddenly became incredibly cute.
The two of them walking in one after the other immediately drew everyone’s attention. First, there was the exclamation over their comparable, stunning beauty. Second, there was the surprise that the two who were destined for disaster whenever they met could walk together so quietly without any argument.
Especially since Lin Ji’s face showed no expression of disgust or disdain. Before, her arrogant attitude and behavior made people unwilling to approach her. Now, she radiated an inherent sense of detachment, a coldness that made people afraid to come near.
“Am I under too much pressure from the college entrance exam? Am I hallucinating? How can Lin Ji walk with the Class President so quietly?”
“I might be hallucinating too. I’m pinching myself, and it doesn’t hurt, see?”
“…Is there a possibility that you’re pinching my leg?”
After writing problems all afternoon, Lin Ji felt her right hand was weak and tired when she went downstairs. She rubbed her right wrist as she walked toward the last row by the window.
She didn’t have a deskmate. Both the inner and outer desks could be considered hers.
As soon as she sat down, she looked up and saw Ji Baixing attempting to bring a chair over. She paused and said with a poker face: “Just come and sit here.”
Ji Baixing’s hand, which was resting on the back of the chair, froze. Her eyes showed surprise. She exchanged a glance with her equally surprised deskmate, Zhang Zhihang, but quickly composed herself, suppressing the astonishment in her eyes. She picked up her water cup and a pen from her desk and walked over.
“?” Zhang Zhihang watched with wide eyes as his deskmate walked towards Lin Ji’s seat. Seeing her safely sit down in the inner seat, his entire face changed color several times.
He said to Sheng Sheng, who had come over with a question: “Am I dreaming? Since when can anyone sit in Lin Ji’s seat? The last time I just wanted to walk past there to get to the back door, I got scolded!”
Sheng Sheng also glanced towards Lin Ji’s direction. Her surprise was no less than Zhang Zhihang’s.
“I don’t know. Maybe a ‘normal’ Lin Ji time-traveled here.”
The class started whispering amongst themselves. The discipline committee member quieted them down a few times, and the room soon fell silent.
The evening self-study teacher entered the classroom, sat at the podium for a while, left a remark about asking each other questions if they had any, and then left. The classroom instantly erupted into sounds like a bustling marketplace.
“Hey, Study Rep! Emergency! I don’t get the math problem!”
“No way! The Study Rep is sitting right next to me, and I haven’t even had a chance to ask yet! Get in line!”
“Ah, I can’t. It’s super urgent. The Study Rep is next to you anyway, so you can ask anytime, right? Let me, let me!”
“Study Rep, Study Rep! We need your help here too! Come save us kids!”
“There’s only one Study Rep. I can’t handle it.” The Study Rep held his papers. “Why don’t you try asking the Class President?”
The class fell silent for a moment, everyone turned to look at the back row, and then quickly turned their heads away.
“Study Rep, take your time. I can wait, I can wait! If not, we’re roommates; I’ll ask you back at the dorm.”
“Ah, right, right! I’m not that busy either. I have time, I have time! I can wait!”
It wasn’t that the back row was scary, but when they turned to look, they happened to see Ji Baixing leaning half her body toward Lin Ji. The two were so close they were almost touching.
That wasn’t the issue. It’s normal for them to be close when explaining problems; otherwise, how could they see and explain clearly? Those groups of top students discussing a problem practically ended up kissing.
So, being close wasn’t a problem, nor was it anything to be surprised about. Even though it was Lin Ji and Ji Baixing, two people who were supposedly incompatible, quietly studying together was enough to make people doubt their lives a little.
But that wasn’t the most doubt-inducing thing. The thing that made them feel like the world was collapsing was…
When they looked back, Ji Baixing leaned closer to Lin Ji, their heads almost touching. That wasn’t the point. The point was that Lin Ji lowered her eyes, slightly leaned back, then looked up with a warning glance at them, as if telling them not to gossip or say anything.
And as luck would have it, their gentle, lovely, and approachable Class President also looked up at that moment. Her radiant peach blossom eyes were filled with a gentle smile, but in the next moment, it inexplicably made people feel afraid.
Ji Baixing placed her index finger on her lips, making a shushing gesture. The draft paper originally pressed under her palm was crumpled into a ball under her smiling gaze.
“…”
Please, pretty older sisters, could you please stop doing things that would make them misunderstand? They really weren’t thinking anything inappropriate, QAQ.
