The Wheelchair Scum Alpha Has Something to Say (GL) - Chapter 8
Chapter 008: Strolling Around the Company
Bai Yue was very concerned about drooling in her sleep, super worried, specifically about whether her drool smelled bad. Facing this situation, Bai Yue quickly pulled out a wet wipe, ready to wipe the small damp patch on Chen Mengyi’s shoulder.
Chen Mengyi, however, smiled: “It’s fine, I can do it myself.” She took the wet wipe from Bai Yue’s hand and wiped her own shoulder. Bai Yue’s drool didn’t smell bad; she rinsed her mouth and used a little breath freshener after breakfast, so there was no odor.
Furthermore, Chen Mengyi thought Bai Yue’s sleeping face was quite lovely, and she only failed to wake her up because she’d been staring for a while.
Now that Bai Yue was awake, Chen Mengyi got out of the car. The assistant had already placed the electric wheelchair next to the car door, and Chen Mengyi smoothly lifted Bai Yue into the wheelchair. Next, Chen Mengyi led Bai Yue into the elevator lobby and onto the elevator.
Her office was the President’s Office on the top floor, and the Chairman’s Office was on the same floor. Although Bai Yue had never been to the company, she was, in fact, the Chairwoman. Bai Yue didn’t go to her own office but followed Chen Mengyi into the President’s Office.
As soon as they arrived at the President’s Office, an assistant approached Chen Mengyi to discuss various matters. Chen Mengyi asked the assistant to hold off. She came to Bai Yue and briefly explained the facilities in the room, the location of the lounge, and who to contact for anything she needed. Chen Mengyi was meticulous in detailing everything, making Bai Yue feel less like an adult and more like a child brought to work by her mother.
Chen Mengyi’s assistant was clearly in a hurry, so Bai Yue repeatedly said: “I know, you go and get busy, and come back when you’re done. I’ll wheel myself around in a bit. I’ll have an assistant with me, so don’t worry.”
Hearing Bai Yue say this, and indeed having urgent matters to attend to, Chen Mengyi nodded and left with the assistant.
After Chen Mengyi left, Bai Yue checked her phone and finally understood why the assistant was in such a rush—it was already 10:30 AM! Chen Mengyi was an hour and a half late because of her! Bai Yue could guess it was because Chen Mengyi couldn’t bear to wake her up when she saw her sleeping in the underground parking lot, which caused such a long delay.
Another junior assistant came in to ask if she needed any beverages, but Bai Yue shook her head. She wasn’t thirsty or hungry; instead, she wanted to roam around the company because it was genuinely her first time there, and she was extremely curious.
The Bai Yue of her past life was just an ordinary employee, and her company was also ordinary, just a regular office building. But the Bai Group was one of Yunhai City’s top companies, and its headquarters building had to be particularly luxurious. The Bai Group was involved in many industries. In addition to traditional real estate, it had also recently entered emerging industries such as internet and entertainment.
It also had an angel investment department. The scope was broad but not messy, and every department was thriving.
Bai Yue wanted to complain when reading the novel: those novelists, for the sake of convenience, always wrote about companies with names like “X Corporation” or “X Group,” showing no creativity. Now that she had transmigrated into the novel and occasionally attended commercial banquets, she realized the advantage of this naming convention—at least she could match the company name with the person’s name!
The junior assistant saw that Bai Yue wanted to tour the company and quickly followed her to lead the way. The assistant was a Beta, a high-achieving university graduate, and about the same age as Bai Yue. They quickly became familiar with each other. Bai Yue learned that the assistant’s name was Wang Yao.
It was also during their conversation that the assistant learned Chen Mengyi was the same age as them. Wang Yao was a bit surprised: “I thought CEO Chen was several years older than me… Ah, I don’t mean that CEO Chen looks old or anything. I mean, CEO Chen seems very composed, which is why I thought she was older.”
“Mengyi’s professional makeup is quite mature, too. She’s only twenty-something, but she dresses like she’s almost thirty.” Bai Yue was different from Wang Yao. Chen Mengyi was Wang Yao’s superior, and their relationship wasn’t particularly close. Wang Yao had just graduated with a master’s degree and hadn’t been an assistant for long, so she naturally wouldn’t dare to speak ill of Chen Mengyi in front of others.
Bai Yue, however, could say whatever she thought. Given her relationship with Chen Mengyi, Bai Yue would say the same thing even in front of her.
Wang Yao didn’t dare to speak and only smiled at Bai Yue’s comment.
The two of them strolled around the company, one after the other. After passing several departments, Bai Yue was recognized without even entering them. There was no avoiding it; Bai Yue was simply too famous. Although people hadn’t actually met her, they had all heard that their boss was a cripple who used a wheelchair.
Seeing her now in person, they found it quite astonishing.
A cripple wasn’t rare, but a cripple with this much money was truly uncommon. Bai Yue didn’t like greeting people, so when she saw others approaching, she immediately urged Wang Yao to make a hasty retreat and run away.
When there was a break in the traffic, Bai Yue quietly asked Wang Yao: “Wang Yao, do you know which department handles film investment?”
Facing this question, Wang Yao thought seriously for a moment: “The group’s business does involve the film and television industry, but the headquarters doesn’t have this business; it’s handled by a subsidiary company. If it has to be connected, it would probably be the Investment Department. Miss Bai, would you like to take a look?”
“Let’s go take a look.” Bai Yue was here for this exact reason, and since she had a lead, she naturally wanted to check it out. But just as she spoke, she heard Chen Mengyi’s voice from behind. She stood tall and elegant, looking extremely capable in her professional attire. Bai Yue, however, felt a sense of being caught red-handed.
Before Bai Yue could come up with an explanation, Wang Yao completely sold her out: “Miss Bai said she wanted to see the Investment Department, apparently planning to invest in some movie.”
“…” Although Chen Mengyi is your superior, you didn’t have to sell me out so cleanly.
Bai Yue’s thoughts were written all over her face. Chen Mengyi saw it and almost couldn’t stifle her laugh. She walked closer, her high heels making a crisp sound on the tiled floor. From any angle, Chen Mengyi was stunning, and her presence drew everyone’s attention.
Moreover, Chen Mengyi was an Omega.
Because of the rut period, Omegas were significantly impacted at work. Although Alphas also had a rut period, its frequency and duration were more manageable than for Omegas, and society’s stance favored Alphas, making it harder for Omegas.
Thus, there were fewer Omegas in the professional field, especially Omegas of marriageable age like Chen Mengyi. Most Omegas would stay home after marriage, becoming full-time housewives or househusbands. Whenever Bai Yue saw this kind of social news, she couldn’t help but associate Omegas with women in her previous life.
Both groups were in a disadvantaged position in society. Crucially, even an excellent, hardworking, and highly commercially astute Omega like Chen Mengyi would be demeaned behind her back. Bai Yue could easily imagine what people might say about Chen Mengyi. In her previous company, her forceful, over-forty, still-unmarried female superior was often the subject of office gossip, always mentioned with condescension and mockery.
Bai Yue couldn’t do anything about it then. All she could do was abruptly cut off the topic and change it when they brought it up. But she couldn’t stop them from secretly continuing the conversation where she couldn’t see. She might even have been seen as “unsociable” by her colleagues.
Chen Mengyi might also be caught up in this storm, perhaps even facing worse treatment than her female superior in the previous life. In the previous life, there were only two genders, male and female. Even though men were the majority in that company, the number of women was not small. If a male colleague made a bold statement in front of everyone, female colleagues would fight back.
Women would stand on the side of women; this was an innate affinity brought about by gender.
But in this society, Chen Mengyi was a lone boat on the sea, surrounded by surging waters. The vast majority of company employees were Alphas and Betas; the number of Omegas was minimal. Even at the Bai Group, a company currently headed by a woman, Omegas only accounted for just over ten percent of the headquarters staff.
When the numbers are too small, they cannot form a collective and cannot contend with the majority.
The only fortunate thing was Chen Mengyi’s high status. Since she joined the company, she was placed in a high position by Bai Yue’s mothers, and now she was second only to one person, and above everyone else. Even the board of directors held no advantage over Chen Mengyi, as the largest shareholder stood right behind her.
But Bai Yue didn’t think she was the one who gave Chen Mengyi the capital to be so assertive. If someone else were the President, Bai Yue would probably be a puppet like the last emperor, with no prestige or real authority. It was Chen Mengyi’s inherent strength that built this business empire and gave Bai Yue enough respect, allowing her to become the Chairman with real power in the Bai Group.
In other words, they were mutually dependent.
Without Bai Yue, Chen Mengyi could not be the influential Executive President. Without Chen Mengyi, Bai Yue would be a puppet Chairman, sitting on a pile of stock but lacking any real voice.
Chen Mengyi slowly walked up to Bai Yue. Bai Yue looked up at her and saw only the gentle smile revealed as she looked down.
If Chen Mengyi were stripped of all her titles, putting aside the fact that she was an Omega and the President of the Bai Group, Bai Yue still felt that the aggressive and ambitious Chen Mengyi was incredibly beautiful.
