The Whole World Wants Them to Get a Divorce - Chapter 17
When a couple of acquaintances meet, it’s usually something like, “Long time no see! Wow, you’re even more beautiful! I’ve missed you! Mwah! Hugs!” What does “I would recognize you even if you turned to ashes” mean?
Anyone who didn’t know would think they were enemies, not desk partners.
This woman is either emotionally unintelligent and can’t talk, or she’s doing it on purpose.
Si Yu examined the woman whose facial features were hidden by heavy makeup but was still pretty. She was sure she had never seen her before, so she asked Little B, “Who is she?”
Little B: “Her name is Lin Shuang. She was your middle school classmate, and you were desk partners for two years. There was a contest for ‘grade flower,’ and you won by ten votes.”
Little B had a brief profile for every person the female supporting character had ever interacted with.
After hearing the introduction, Si Yu rolled her eyes.
A ‘grade flower’ contest in middle school? They must have had too little homework and too much time on their hands.
It’s been almost ten years since middle school. How could Lin Shuang recognize the female supporting character so quickly?
Si Yu pretended to have a sudden realization. “Oh, it’s you! I might have recognized you if you hadn’t put on so much makeup.”
Lin Shuang had put a lot of effort into her makeup for the interview today. She was very satisfied with her look, but Si Yu said her makeup was too heavy. When she saw the others looking at them with various expressions, Lin Shuang forced a smile. She lowered her voice. “You haven’t changed at all. You’re still so… pretty.”
Si Yu could hear that she wasn’t being genuine, so she replied with an equally insincere, “Thank you.”
Lin Shuang moved her chair over and sat next to her. She whispered, “Are you here for an interview, too?”
Si Yu put on a professional smile. “Yeah, I heard they were looking for actors, so I came to check it out.”
Lin Shuang’s brazen gaze scanned her up and down again. She said, not quite believing it, “You transferred in ninth grade. We haven’t heard from you since. I can’t believe you also entered the entertainment industry. But I’ve never seen you before.”
“I haven’t entered yet,” Si Yu said honestly. “I’m a rookie.”
Lin Shuang was stunned. “You’ve never acted before?”
“Nope.”
“Have you ever studied acting?”
“Nope,” Si Yu said, lying with a straight face.
It wasn’t really a lie. The female supporting character was a rookie who had never studied acting.
Lin Shuang was shocked. “Then… how were you invited to this interview?”
Before Si Yu came, Lin Shuang had a rough idea of the other ten people’s situations. She knew two of the actresses. Although they were both D-list actresses, they had been in many shows. The other eight were more or less the same. They had all been struggling in the entertainment industry for two or three years.
Lin Shuang had a degree in acting. She had been in the industry for five years and had never made it big, but her acting skills were solid. After leaving her old company, she was determined to get into Guangying. It took her three tries before she finally got an interview invitation.
Guangying Entertainment was the most powerful entertainment agency in the country with the most resources. The competition was fierce.
Lin Shuang had worked so hard to get this opportunity. She couldn’t believe that someone with no experience could also get an interview.
Is she an insider?
But if she were, she wouldn’t need to interview.
The more Lin Shuang thought about it, the more confused she became.
Si Yu smiled sweetly and said shamelessly, “Maybe the handsome guy who was going through the resumes was conquered by my stunning beauty.”
Lin Shuang: “………………”
Those words were so irritating. Lin Shuang couldn’t help but remember the painful memories of losing to Si Yu in the “grade flower” contest in seventh grade and the boy she had a crush on who rejected her because he liked Si Yu. She thought to herself, Just you wait until the interview. Let’s see how you’re still smiling then.
So what if she’s pretty? Guangying never signs talentless pretty faces.
The other woman’s foundation was too thick, and Si Yu couldn’t read Lin Shuang’s mind. She didn’t want to play along with her anymore. She looked down at her phone. “I’m going to the restroom.”
“I’ll go with you,” Lin Shuang said.
Si Yu asked a staff member for the restroom’s location. The staff member told her that the women’s restroom on this floor was under maintenance due to a water leak and to go to the tenth floor. The tenth floor was where meetings were held, so there were fewer people.
They went to wait for the elevator.
The elevator door opened, and inside were two women, one in black and one in white, both dressed in elite, professional attire.
Si Yu was about to walk in, but she stopped when she saw the tall figure in white.
On the way here, Si Yu was wondering if she would run into Lu Xi and if she should greet her if she did. She wasn’t mentally prepared, but Lu Xi appeared, with her assistant, Chen Yan.
Lu Xi clearly didn’t expect to see her here. A strange look flashed in her cold eyes.
Si Yu composed herself and walked in nonchalantly.
Lin Shuang followed.
The elevator walls were so reflective that they showed everyone’s faces. Si Yu stood in front, and her eyes inevitably met Lu Xi’s. She pretended not to notice and looked away.
The air vent was “whooshing,” blowing out cold air. In the silence, a clear voice said, “What are you doing here?”
“Ms. Lu, are you talking to me?” Chen Yan asked.
Lu Xi was staring directly at the back of Si Yu’s head.
Si Yu looked around. Her eyes met Lu Xi’s again. She then realized that Lu Xi was talking to her. Under the strange gazes of the other two people, she cleared her throat. “I’m here for an interview.”
“For what position?”
Si Yu had planned to wait until the interview results came out before telling her family, but she ran into Lu Xi so soon. She had to tell the truth. “An actress.”
Lu Xi frowned. She repeated, as if she couldn’t understand, “An actress?”
Si Yu quietly said, “Yeah.”
ding
The elevator arrived at the tenth floor.
Lu Xi and Chen Yan were also going to the tenth floor for a meeting.
Lu Xi looked at Si Yu’s back as she walked toward the restroom, a thoughtful expression on her face.
Chen Yan didn’t recognize Si Yu. She had worked for Lu Xi for a few years and knew how cold Lu Xi was. Lu Xi had just initiated a conversation in the elevator. Although her tone was still cold, it had a strange sense of familiarity. She couldn’t help but ask, “Ms. Lu, do you know that person?”
Lu Xi’s gaze didn’t return until Si Yu had entered the restroom. Her face returned to its usual coldness. She answered with a non-sequitur. “Is everyone here?”
Chen Yan realized she didn’t want to talk about it. She put away her gossipy thoughts. “Yes, they are.”
“Let’s go.”
Lin Shuang was freaking out.
“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!”
Si Yu’s eardrums hurt from her high-pitched voice. Lin Shuang was shaking her. She sounded like she had taken a stimulant. “That was the CEO of Guangying, Lu Xi! She’s even more beautiful in person! How can someone be so beautiful!”
Why? Because the author made her that way.
Si Yu was getting dizzy from all the shaking. She pushed her away and pretended to be an obsessed fan. “Yeah, yeah, she’s so beautiful. I almost fainted from her beauty. It’s a great honor to be in the same elevator as her.”
“…” Lin Shuang slowly calmed down. “You don’t have to be so dramatic.”
Si Yu waved her hand and was about to go into a stall.
Lin Shuang stopped her. “Do you know Ms. Lu?”
Si Yu’s mind worked quickly. “No,” she said.
“Then why did she ask you a question?”
Si Yu gave her a wink and pointed to her face with a smile. “Because I’m beautiful.”
Lin Shuang: “………………”
Lin Shuang was speechless. She had seen narcissistic people before, but she had never seen anyone as shameless as Si Yu.
Si Yu didn’t care what she thought. She sat on the toilet and sighed.
As a female supporting character without any clout, even the fact that she had been married to the CEO of Guangying for two years was unknown to outsiders.
It was truly tragic. But Si Yu was also glad that the author had arranged it this way. It saved her a lot of trouble.
The interviews were scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. They had half an hour to prepare.
There were a total of thirteen people for this interview. They would be paired up and given a script and a partner to act with. This would leave one person without a partner.
Si Yu was that extra person.
A staff member gave her a sheet of paper. It was the monologue she had to perform. Si Yu glanced at it and was silent.
She was to play a widow who had just lost her husband. Her partner was a “corpse.” He had no lines and just had to lie on the floor.
The others who were paired up went to practice with their partners. Si Yu could only silently memorize her lines.
They also had to draw numbers for the interview order. Si Yu didn’t have to. She was scheduled to go last.
Lin Shuang and her partner drew number two.
After her interview, Lin Shuang came back to the lounge with a gloomy expression.
Si Yu didn’t ask her how the interview went. She looked down at her script.
Lin Shuang saw that she was acting serious and thought to herself, I’ve never seen you study this hard in school. It’s useless to be serious. You’ll be eliminated anyway if you can’t act.
“Next, Si Yu.”
After waiting for almost an hour, it was finally her turn. Si Yu rubbed her sore butt and walked into the interview room with a steady gait.
There were four interviewers: one director of artists and three veteran agents from Guangying.
Si Yu bowed 90 degrees and introduced herself.
The four interviewers were all amazed by her outstanding looks and charisma. They looked at each other.
The director looked at her resume. “Si Yu, zero acting experience. We’ve all watched the video you submitted. Your performance was amazing and very expressive. Your acting skills are very polished. You don’t seem like a rookie who has never studied acting or been in a show.”
When she submitted her resume, Si Yu included a video of her performance. It was a monologue of a blind woman. It was a role she had played in a movie, and she won “Best Supporting Actress” for it.
She bowed again. “Thank you for the compliment, Director Xu,” she said, neither servile nor overbearing.
“Among these thirteen people, you have the most special case. That’s why we put you in a separate group. We want to see you perform live,” the director said.
A video could be adjusted and shot repeatedly to get the most perfect take. It was hard to judge someone’s true skill. An impromptu performance, however, was a different story.
They don’t trust me and are worried that my real acting skills aren’t good enough to not affect the other interviewees’ performance, so they didn’t give me a partner?
Si Yu smiled. “I understand. I’m ready,” she said.
“Then let’s begin. Have a staff member help you with…”
knock, knock, knock
The director’s words were interrupted by a knock on the door.
A staff member quickly ran to open the door. When he saw who it was, he gasped. “Ms. Lu, why are you here?” he said in surprise.
The four interviewers stood up in unison and looked at the door. When they saw who it was, they all called out, “Ms. Lu.”
Si Yu turned around and saw that it was Lu Xi. Her heart skipped a beat.
Why is Lu Xi here?
Lu Xi casually glanced at her. Her eyes went past her and landed on the four respectful interviewers behind her. “I heard there was an artist interview. I came to see,” she said indifferently.
The director immediately gave up his seat, motioning for her to sit.
Lu Xi waved her hand. “I’ll just stand and watch.”
A staff member immediately brought her a chair.
Chen Yan stood behind Lu Xi like a bodyguard, her face expressionless.
Lu Xi crossed her legs and sat very casually. She tucked her hair behind her ear. “Don’t mind me. You can continue,” she said.
The CEO’s sudden appearance made all four interviewers a little nervous. The director tugged on his tie, composed himself, and said to the dazed Si Yu, “You can begin.”
The staff member immediately lay down on the floor.
Lu Xi was confused. “What are you doing?”
The staff member said, “Ms. Lu, she doesn’t have a partner, so I’m playing the corpse.”
Lu Xi’s interested gaze fell on Si Yu’s face. “And you?”
Si Yu stood up straight. “Ms. Lu, I’m playing the widow,” she said solemnly.
Lu Xi: “…”
Is she cursing me to die???
T/N: Hahaha… She is 🤣
