The Whole World Wants Them to Get a Divorce - Chapter 18
As soon as Si Yu finished speaking, she realized something was off.
She and Lu Xi were still legally married. And here she was, in front of her wife, acting as a widow. She had no idea what Lu Xi was thinking.
But she didn’t have time to dwell on it. Her main question was why Lu Xi was here.
Everyone interviewing today was a nobody. Why would the CEO of Guangying show up?
Could it be for me?
That thought seemed a little narcissistic, but Si Yu found it plausible.
Lu Xi wasn’t here because she was worried about her being bullied or excluded. She was probably curious and suspicious.
That was exactly what Lu Xi was thinking. The idea of Si Yu interviewing to be an actress sounded ridiculous.
Lu Xi wouldn’t jump to conclusions about a person or a situation unless she saw and experienced it for herself. Guangying’s standards for actors were very strict. Since Si Yu made it to the interview, she must have some skill.
This made Lu Xi even more curious.
After her meeting, Lu Xi couldn’t resist coming to see for herself. It just so happened to be Si Yu’s turn.
Si Yu held a piece of A4 paper in her hand. Her chin was slightly raised, and her gaze was calm and determined. Her voice was full of confidence. It was as if she was going to get this job no matter what.
Playing a widow sounded a little awkward, but Lu Xi saw how confident she was and was suddenly curious about her performance.
After the director announced the start of the performance, Si Yu immediately got into character.
A young widow who had just lost her husband would be filled with intense emotions.
But Si Yu didn’t follow the script exactly. She didn’t have a hysterical outburst of crying. Her emotions built up in layers, making her sorrow and despair both rich and nuanced.
She was very emotionally compelling. Everyone in the room was pulled into the heavy atmosphere. They were all heartbroken and on the verge of tears.
Lu Xi, who was always emotionally detached, was shaken after watching the five-minute performance.
The four interviewers were so engrossed in the performance that they forgot it was just a show. When Si Yu wiped her tears and bowed to them, they still hadn’t fully come out of it.
The staff member who played the corpse said tearfully, “Your acting was so good that I actually thought I was ‘dead’.”
Si Yu smiled shyly. “I’m sorry. I was too into the character.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay. You were fantastic!” The staff member gave her a thumbs-up. He thought for a moment and added, “Out of the thirteen people, I think you were the best!”
The director coughed.
The other three interviewers snapped out of it. They looked at Si Yu, who was in character one second and out of it the next. They were amazed by her incredible performance, and for a moment, they couldn’t find the words to describe it.
They had never seen a rookie with zero experience like her.
No, they didn’t believe Si Yu was a rookie.
Lu Xi looked at Si Yu with a new look in her eyes.
Si Yu felt her gaze and looked back at her. She smiled sweetly. Her eyes were still wet and red, but they were lively and full of light, as if asking, Was I good?
Lu Xi’s heart skipped a beat. She calmly looked away and stood up. She said to the four interviewers who were about to stand up, “Just continue what you’re doing.”
With that, she turned and left.
Guangying only planned on signing three new artists this time. After everyone had performed, the four interviewers had to discuss who to sign. They had Si Yu go back to the lounge and wait for the results.
When Si Yu walked out of the interview room, Lu Xi was nowhere to be found.
There was no one else in the elevator. Chen Yan looked at Lu Xi, who seemed to be deep in thought. “Ms. Lu, aren’t you going to wait for the results?” she asked.
Lu Xi was startled. She looked at her in confusion. “Wait for what results?”
“The actress named Si Yu…” Didn’t you come here specifically to see her? Chen Yan didn’t say the rest of her sentence out loud.
Lu Xi lowered her eyes and straightened her sleeve. “Lu Sheng and the others aren’t blind. They’ll keep such a good actress,” she said.
She didn’t need to wait. She knew that Si Yu would pass this interview.
The elevator was still slowly going up. Lu Xi looked at the changing numbers on the panel and spaced out again.
Si Yu didn’t study acting in college. Why was she so good? Did she secretly take acting classes?
Ever since she brought up the idea of a divorce agreement, Lu Xi noticed that Si Yu had been changing, but those changes seemed superficial.
After watching that incredible performance and remembering the radiant Si Yu who was lost in her character, Lu Xi felt like she didn’t know her anymore.
Did she misunderstand Si Yu all this time, or had she never truly known this woman? For the first time, Lu Xi was confused.
After a heated discussion, the four interviewers finally chose three people.
A staff member entered the lounge. He read the names from the paper. “Congratulations to Chen Wang, Zhang Xiaoxiao, and Si Yu on passing the interview!”
A male and a female voice shouted in excitement. Chen Wang and Zhang Xiaoxiao were ecstatic.
Si Yu gave a small smile.
The others who didn’t pass looked defeated. Some forced a smile and congratulated them, while others just left.
Lin Shuang ran up to Si Yu in disbelief. “You said you never studied acting and never acted before. Why did you pass the interview?” she demanded.
If she didn’t have connections, then Si Yu must have been lying and intentionally hiding her skills.
Si Yu shrugged. “You wouldn’t believe me if I said it was because I’m beautiful,” she said.
Lin Shuang: “…”
Lin Shuang felt like she had been played. She was even more annoyed when she saw Si Yu’s carefree smile. She gritted her teeth and left angrily.
The staff member told the three of them, “Your new agents will contact you shortly. Please go home and wait for the notification.”
After leaving the Guangying building, Si Yu called the old woman right away. “Grandma, I passed the interview.”
“I knew you would pass. Our Qiao Qiao is the best!” The old woman was even happier than her. “Come over quickly. I’ll have Chef Xie make a big meal. We’ll celebrate tonight.”
At 7 p.m., besides Lu Wei, who was out having fun, and Lu Zhennan, who was on a business trip, Tang Jie and Lu Xi were called back by the old woman to celebrate Si Yu’s new job.
Tang Jie asked with a mix of curiosity and mischief, “What kind of job did you get, Si Yu?”
Before, Si Yu had kept it a secret to surprise them and because she was worried about Tang Jie and Lu Wei’s gossiping. Now that everything was settled, there was no need to hide it. She was eating a chicken wing. “An actress,” she said.
“An actress???” Tang Jie’s expression was priceless. It was as if she had “I don’t believe it” written on her face.
Si Yu pointed her chin at Lu Xi, who was sitting across from her. “I went to Guangying. She was there during my interview. If you don’t believe me, ask her.”
Tang Jie immediately looked at Lu Xi.
Lu Xi wasn’t used to talking during meals. She looked up at Si Yu and said concisely, “Yeah, her acting was okay.”
Just “okay”? Si Yu thought her standards were too high.
Tang Jie’s chopsticks clattered to the floor. She was stunned. “Si Yu, you… you’re going to act?”
Si Yu raised an eyebrow and said with a meaningful tone, “If someone like Lu Wei can act, why can’t I?”
Tang Jie: “…”
The old woman’s eyes were so crinkled from smiling that they looked like lines. She put some food on Si Yu’s plate. “Our Qiao Qiao is so amazing. Will I be able to see you on TV soon?”
Si Yu’s bowl was piled high with food. She quickly stopped the old woman. “It’s not that fast. I have to wait for the company to give me an agent and sign the contract. After I sign, it doesn’t mean I’ll get to act right away. It depends on what resources my agent has. If my agent isn’t good, I might not get a role for months.”
The old woman didn’t know much about the industry. She slammed the table and made a decisive declaration. “That’s not a problem. Xi Xi, you’ll immediately get Qiao Qiao an agent and have her sign the contract. Then you’ll make sure she gets to act. From now on, you’ll give all the good resources to Qiao Qiao. You have to protect her. If anyone bullies her, you’ll be held responsible.”
Si Yu’s eyes lit up. She felt a little person dancing and cheering inside her. Grandma is so awesome!
Lu Xi, who was suddenly put on the spot, almost choked on her rice. She looked at the old woman’s stern gaze and helplessly rubbed her forehead. She looked at Si Yu, who was eating happily and smiling. She paused and said softly, “Got it.”
Si Yu made a heart shape with her greasy fingers. She smiled sweetly. “I love you so much, wife! Mwah!”
Lu Xi: “…”
That same night, Si Yu received a call from an agent named Zhu Qi, who told her to come and sign the contract tomorrow.
Si Yu thought the name Zhu Qi sounded familiar. After hanging up, she suddenly remembered. Wasn’t this the veteran agent who led the original protagonist, Liang Yufei, on her meteoric rise to fame after she signed with Guangying?
But Liang Yufei probably hasn’t left her old company yet, right?
Who cares? I’m not going to turn down such an awesome agent.
Si Yu had a good night’s sleep. The next day, she was in great spirits when she went to Guangying.
Zhu Qi had watched the video Si Yu submitted and the performance from yesterday’s interview. She put two scripts in front of her. “Your acting is truly amazing. If you haven’t been acting for many years, you must be a genius. But you’re a rookie, and directors might not want to hire you for a leading role. I only have these two scripts for now. They’re both for a supporting role. Take your pick.”
Si Yu’s eyes immediately landed on the title, “Your Smile,” on the cover. She felt a twitch in her eyelid.
Oh, isn’t this the campus romance drama that Liang Yufei is about to star in?
It seems fate wants her and Liang Yufei to be inseparable.
A cursed bond.
Si Yu picked up “Your Smile.” She smiled like a fox. “I’ll take this one.”
“Aren’t you going to look at the script first?”
“Nope.”
Zhu Qi was surprised. Other people were always careful when choosing a script, but she made her decision in one second.
This confidence and calmness didn’t look like a rookie’s at all.
Zhu Qi secretly observed her. She really wanted to ask, “What’s your relationship with Ms. Lu?”
But she remembered what Assistant Chen had told her: “Just do what you’re told. Don’t ask too many questions.” So she kept her mouth shut.
It was still early after she left Guangying. Si Yu drove around aimlessly. When she passed a beauty salon, she had a sudden whim and went in.
I’m going to be acting. I should take good care of my face.
After getting a facial, she got a massage.
The masseuse’s technique was so good that Si Yu fell asleep without realizing it. When she woke up, it was already dark. She drove home at a leisurely pace.
Aunt Zhao had just finished watching two episodes of Beloved Consort. When she saw how radiant Si Yu looked, she said, “Miss Si, you look so beautiful today!”
Si Yu was in a great mood. She threw her bag on the couch and walked barefoot on the fluffy rug. “Is Lu Xi not back yet?” she asked casually.
“She’s back,” Aunt Zhao said, pointing upstairs. She lowered her voice. “She came back around nine. I heard she was a little upset that you weren’t here. I asked her if she had eaten, but she said she wasn’t hungry and went into her study.”
She was upset that I wasn’t here? No way. Does Lu Xi care about me that much?
Si Yu thought Aunt Zhao was overthinking it.
Aunt Zhao was yawning a lot. Si Yu told her to get some rest. She turned off the light and went upstairs.
The study door wasn’t closed all the way, and a little light was coming out.
Lu Xi didn’t like to be disturbed while she was working. Si Yu remembered Aunt Zhao saying she seemed upset. After a few seconds of hesitation, she went to the door and knocked.
She knocked three times, but there was no response.
“Lu Xi?”
She called out, but there was still no response.
Si Yu pushed the door open and went in.
A faint blue light covered the desk. Lu Xi was lying on the computer desk.
Is she asleep?
Si Yu quickly walked over. She called out to her again. “Lu Xi?”
The head that was lying down stirred. Her long, dark hair slowly slid down, revealing the woman’s cold and beautiful face.
Her face was very red, maybe because she had been lying down for so long, but the rest of her skin was very pale. Her usually cold and emotionless eyes were now as still as a deep pond. Her phoenix-like eyes were hazy and alluring, and a burning, alcoholic breath came out of her mouth.
Si Yu was stunned. She gulped. “You were drinking?” she asked softly.
Is she drunk?
Lu Xi looked at her without a word. Her beautiful eyebrows were furrowed. She looked very uncomfortable.
“If you’re not feeling well, you shouldn’t work overtime. I’ll help you back to your room to sleep.”
Lu Xi had always hated being touched by her, but she didn’t push her away this time.
As soon as their skin touched, Si Yu was shocked by her body temperature. She instinctively touched her forehead with the back of her hand and was shocked again. “You have a fever!” she said.
Lu Xi tilted her head. Her expression was blank, as if she didn’t understand what Si Yu was saying.
Si Yu wasn’t sure if she was too drunk. She made a quick decision. “I’ll help you to bed first. Then I’ll get you some medicine.”
Lu Xi stared at her without blinking.
Si Yu put her two hands under Lu Xi’s armpits. It took a lot of effort to lift her out of the chair. She gritted her teeth. “Are you a turtle? Why don’t you move?”
The word “turtle” seemed to have triggered something. Lu Xi glared at her. She finally decided to move, but her movement was a little too big. She turned her body, as if she was about to argue with her.
Si Yu was caught off guard. Her back foot got tangled in the bunched-up rug. She instinctively grabbed Lu Xi’s waist, and the two of them fell heavily onto the floor like conjoined twins.
The rug was thick, so the fall didn’t hurt. But Si Yu’s chest was hurting from being crushed by Lu Xi. She let out a difficult breath. “You look so thin, but why are you so heavy! You crushed me once and now you’re doing it again. Are you trying to flatten my chest… mmmph!”
A thin, soft, and hot hand covered her mouth.
A flickering light passed through Lu Xi’s eyes. Her head slowly came down. Her red lips were slightly parted, and her breath smelled of intoxicating alcohol.
Being crushed by a beautiful woman who seems to be drunk and feeling her… heat… I mean her fever…
Si Yu thought she was going to kiss her. Her breathing stopped, and her heart rate sped up.
Is she going to get drunk and… do it?
I’m not ready for this!
Si Yu reached out to push her away.
Lu Xi’s body became heavy on top of her. Her lips stopped at Si Yu’s chin. Her eyes were deep, and her slightly hoarse voice said, “Make another sound, and I’m divorcing you.”
“…”
