The Whole World Wants Them to Get a Divorce - Chapter 2
Lu Xi left with the agreement and a heart full of doubt.
Si Yu sat on the bed in a daze, thinking, The author must really love Lu Xi, the female number two, to have “written” her so breathtakingly beautiful. Only a novel would dare to be so self-indulgent; no one in real life is this perfect.
Just then, a middle-aged woman in plain clothes came into the room.
Si Yu sat up straight, about to ask who she was, when Little B’s voice sounded in her mind: “She’s the family housekeeper, Aunt Zhao.”
Si Yu understood, pursed her lips, and said, “Aunt Zhao.”
Aunt Zhao walked over quickly, her face filled with concern. “Miss Si, are you alright?”
The question felt a bit abrupt. Confused, Si Yu said against her better judgment, “I’m… I’m fine.”
In truth, she was anything but fine. She’d been tragically hit and killed by a car, only to transmigrate into a novel. She didn’t know whether to cry or laugh.
Aunt Zhao squeezed her arm and then felt her forehead. “Why did you fall into the water at the banquet last night? You can’t swim; what if something had happened? It’s a good thing someone found you and pulled you out in time. It’s good that you’re okay, it’s good.”
Aunt Zhao talked to herself. When Si Yu heard the words “fell into the water,” she suddenly remembered what happened by the pool yesterday: the vicious “Si Yu” pushed the protagonist into the pool, and she, Si Yu, saw it and jumped in to save her. Then she discovered that she, a swimmer, couldn’t swim! It had almost gotten her killed!
Thinking about it now, it must have been because this body couldn’t swim, which had impacted her ability to save the protagonist.
Si Yu had passed out from drowning shortly after falling in. She didn’t know who saved her or how she got back here. All she could think about was, Is the protagonist okay?
In the original novel, the protagonist was lucky and was saved. If she died just like that, how would the rest of the plot unfold?
On second thought, if the protagonist had really been in trouble, the police would have already come for her.
“Si Yu” had acted so fast that she hadn’t even gotten a good look at what the protagonist looked like.
While Si Yu was lost in thought, she heard Aunt Zhao say, “Miss Lu Xi has left. She looked a little strange. What did you two talk about?”
“We talked about getting a divorce,” Si Yu said absently, her mind returning to the present.
“What!” Aunt Zhao stood up abruptly. “Miss Lu Xi wants a divorce?”
“Yeah.” Si Yu’s tone was flat. “The divorce agreement is signed. We’ll go to the civil affairs bureau tomorrow to get the divorce certificate, and then it’ll be official.”
Aunt Zhao looked at her in disbelief. “Don’t you love Miss Lu Xi so much? Why would you agree to divorce her?”
“Oh…” Si Yu said haltingly, “I was naive before. She doesn’t love me, and I kept her tied to me. That’s not fair to her. A wise person once said, ‘If you love someone, you must set them free.’ I’m fulfilling her wish.”
“But…”
Si Yu blinked at her. “Don’t you think I’m right?”
Aunt Zhao was at a loss for words. After a long pause, she changed the subject. “I made some chicken soup. Do you want some?”
“Sure,” Si Yu said, feeling hungry.
Aunt Zhao helped her up, and the two of them left the room.
Si Yu remembered Little B’s warning and asked, “You said I would have bad luck if I signed. What’s the punishment?”
She felt like Little B was just bluffing.
She took another step forward and suddenly stepped into empty space. The intense feeling of falling made Si Yu instinctively cry out. Before she could react, her body lurched forward, and she fell with a loud “thud” at the top of the stairs.
“…Miss Si!” Aunt Zhao was horrified and quickly helped her up. “Why did you fall out of nowhere? Are you alright?”
As she fell, Si Yu’s reflex was to brace herself with her palms, saving her face. Her palms stung. She squeezed out two words through gritted teeth: “I’m… fine.”
Yeah, right!
The floor was flat, and she hadn’t tripped. A sudden fall on a level surface could only have one explanation—
“That is the punishment,” Little B said. “All violations of commands will result in a random punishment.”
Random punishment?!
The corner of Si Yu’s mouth twitched. “Don’t you think this is a bit much?”
Little B: “I’m sorry, I’m just an AI following instructions. It must have hurt. Please don’t do that again.”
Si Yu felt like swearing.
Aunt Zhao couldn’t hear her conversation with Little B. She only saw Si Yu’s face go from red to pale and asked again with concern, “Are you really okay?”
Si Yu gritted her teeth and shook her head.
The soup Aunt Zhao made was delicious, but Si Yu barely tasted it as she asked Little B many questions.
“Am I dead?”
“Yes,” Little B said. “You were hit and killed by that minivan. It was a terrible death. Do you want to see it?”
Si Yu’s stomach churned, and she clutched her chest, her voice strained. “No.”
Who would want to see how they died? She just wondered if anyone would take care of her body, since she had no family.
Si Yu composed herself and asked again, “Why did I become the ‘Si Yu’ in the book? Is it because we have the same name, or because I commented on the book saying I was envious of her?”
Little B: “You’re so smart! That’s exactly it!”
Si Yu: “…Smart, my ass.”
Si Yu wasn’t happy at all and asked how to lift the punishment.
Little B said, “You cannot disobey commands. This was just a minor punishment. If you actually get a divorce, you will die in this world.”
Si Yu: “…”
Little B told her that as long as she completed the system’s mission, she could return to her original world. That was the reward.
The chance to be reborn was too tempting.
Regardless of whether she could go back, the immediate problem was that she couldn’t divorce Lu Xi, or her life in this world would be over.
But if she didn’t get divorced, what about the original protagonist?
She had died for no reason, come to this strange world, and received such an unreasonable system mission. Si Yu’s mind was in turmoil.
That night, she tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.
“Little B,” she called out the system in frustration. “My ultimate mission is to make Lu Xi fall in love with me, right?”
As a system that didn’t need rest, Little B was ready on demand. “Yes. As soon as the target falls completely in love with you, you can return to your original world.”
“But if Lu Xi falls for me, won’t the original protagonist be miserable?”
Little B paused. “I think you’re more miserable than her right now. You should be more concerned about your own safety.”
Si Yu fell silent, remembering what she had gone through a few hours ago.
Little B also went quiet.
After a while, Si Yu couldn’t help but ask, “In the book, Lu Xi belongs to the protagonist. If I cling to Lu Xi like this, won’t I become a homewrecker?”
“Are you an idiot? You’re not even divorced from your target. There’s no chance of you being the other woman,” Little B said calmly in its monotone voice.
Si Yu choked. “Are you mocking me?”
“Of course not,” Little B said. “I’m just reminding you that the target doesn’t have feelings for the protagonist yet, so now is the perfect time for you to act. You’re a kind person, but kindness won’t save your life. What are you still hesitating for?”
Si Yu didn’t know what she was hesitating about.
She had never been this anxious, even during her performing arts college exams. Her mind was a complete mess, her mood was all over the place, yet she somehow managed to fall asleep.
She was just too exhausted from everything that had happened today.
In the morning, Si Yu was woken up by Aunt Zhao.
Aunt Zhao said with a grave expression, “Miss Lu Xi asked me to tell you that she will take you to the civil affairs bureau after you finish breakfast. She wants you to get your documents ready.”
Lu Xi is back?
Si Yu hadn’t slept well last night, so she had no idea when Lu Xi returned. She looked at the closed door at the end of the hallway—that was Lu Xi’s room.
Si Yu let out a listless “Hmm” and slowly went to the bathroom.
The author of the book didn’t describe what the female supporting character looked like. When Si Yu looked in the mirror last night, she had asked Little B, “Why does this villainous supporting character look exactly like me?”
Little B said, “So you won’t feel awkward.”
…How thoughtful.
Si Yu asked Aunt Zhao to get her new toiletries. As she brushed her teeth, she absentmindedly wondered, How can I avoid getting a divorce?
Overnight, Si Yu’s attitude had changed from “I’ll be a good Samaritan and get Lu Xi and the protagonist together” to “I can’t get this divorce, or my life is over.” She felt so pathetic.
But what could she do?
On the way back yesterday, she had argued with Little B, saying she had to get the divorce. As a result, she got her hand caught in the door when she entered the house. Later, she argued while eating and bit her tongue. While taking a shower, she told Little B, “The protagonist will be miserable if I don’t get divorced. I can’t be this villain,” and the next second, she was drenched in cold water.
Little B said those were only minor punishments.
What would the major punishments be? Getting her arm or leg broken? Eating a razor blade? Having boiling water poured on her?
Just thinking about it made Si Yu shiver.
When one’s life is threatened, human selfishness comes out in full force.
“Sigh—”
To save her own life, Si Yu had no choice but to compromise with her reality.
After getting ready, she went downstairs.
Aunt Zhao had already set out breakfast.
Si Yu looked around but didn’t see her target. “Where is she?” she asked.
Aunt Zhao pointed upstairs and said softly, “I already asked. She said she doesn’t want to eat.”
She doesn’t want to eat, or she doesn’t want to sit and eat with me? Si Yu didn’t have time to dwell on this. Her mind was racing with how to bring up the subject.
Yesterday, she had said she was happy about the divorce. Today, she was going to go back on her word and say she didn’t want it. What would Lu Xi think?
Lu Xi would definitely not be okay with it! She would probably call her crazy.
Going back on your word? What kind of person does that? Si Yu mentally cursed herself fiercely, and then cursed Little B. She then remembered that Little B was just an emotionless machine that followed orders, so she changed her target to the garbage transmigration system.
Little B: “Girls shouldn’t use bad words.”
Si Yu: “I’ll say whatever I want. Na na na, come and bite me.”
Little B: “…”
Unless she was disobeying a command, Little B couldn’t randomly punish her host, so it had to silently listen to her rant for five minutes.
After getting that off her chest, Si Yu felt relieved, but then she got worried again.
The breakfast was lavish, and she ate very slowly. When she heard footsteps, she suddenly looked up.
Lu Xi was already fully dressed and walking down the stairs gracefully. Her long, straight hair was neatly tucked behind her ears. She was wearing a white shirt and black pants—the same colors as yesterday, but a different style. Her outfit was simpler, but her flawless face made everyone ignore everything else.
A word suddenly came to Si Yu’s mind: “a feast for the eyes.”
If Lu Xi had come down a few minutes earlier, she wouldn’t have even needed breakfast, or had to suppress her anger and curse the lousy system for so long.
“Are you done eating?” Lu Xi stood at the top of the stairs, looking down.
Si Yu realized she had been staring for too long. She quickly swallowed the egg in her mouth, pretended to look away nonchalantly, brushed off a piece of egg, wiped her mouth, and stood up. “Yes, I am.”
“Let’s go to the civil affairs bureau.”
What do I do, what do I do, what do I do?!
“I’m… not feeling well today. Can we go another day?” Si Yu blurted out a random excuse since she hadn’t come up with a plan yet.
Lu Xi’s narrow eyes slightly narrowed. “Did you change your mind?”
Si Yu gritted her teeth and nodded.
“Are you unhappy with the agreement?” Lu Xi didn’t seem surprised by her change of heart. She curled her lips into a sneer. “Si Yu, the terms in that agreement were my greatest compromise. Don’t push your luck.”
Si Yu hadn’t even read the agreement. She didn’t care about it; she only cared about her life.
With a cold, unapproachable person like Lu Xi, being aggressive wouldn’t work.
Si Yu walked over slowly. In just a few steps, she had already prepared her speech. She lowered her eyes and said with deep affection, “I don’t want your money. I only want you.”
Lu Xi: “…”
“I was too impulsive yesterday. I regret it now.” Si Yu blinked, forcing out two sparkling tears. She took the plunge and hugged Lu Xi. “Wife, let’s not get a divorce, okay?”
