The Whole World Wants Them to Get a Divorce - Chapter 3
Before transmigrating, Si Yu was a student at a reputable performing arts academy and had played over a hundred roles, big and small. Though she never won any major acting awards, all the directors she worked with praised her skill.
Without even looking in a mirror, Si Yu knew how moving her pitiful, delicate appearance was. Anyone who wasn’t made of wood would soften at the sight.
However, she forgot that the person she was facing was Lu Xi, who had absolutely no feelings for the original “Si Yu.”
A crack finally appeared in Lu Xi’s cold, icy face. She frowned, looking at the woman who was tightly hugging her and sobbing. Suppressing her frustration, she ground out, “Let… go.”
The two words were flat and without emotion, yet sounded like they were squeezed out from between clenched teeth, full of palpable exasperation.
Through her watery eyes, Si Yu saw the clear disgust in Lu Xi’s gaze and belatedly realized she had… overstepped.
They weren’t close, and she had just hugged the woman around the waist!
But the waist was truly soft, even thinner than her own.
Ahem.
Si Yu suddenly let go, quickly adjusted her emotions in a second, and squeezed out two more clear tears. She looked at Lu Xi with a mix of trepidation and deep affection, saying helplessly, “I’m sorry, I just… I just don’t want to get a divorce.”
As if afraid she would do something else crazy, Lu Xi stepped back, unmoved. “I am definitely going to get this divorce. Nothing you say will change my mind.”
Si Yu bit her lower lip, still sobbing. “I won’t go to the civil affairs bureau with you.”
Lu Xi let out an indifferent scoff. “Do you think that will prevent the divorce?”
“…Of course not.”
Even as a legal novice who had never been divorced, Si Yu knew that in the book, the female supporting character and Lu Xi eventually used legal means to force the divorce. She only said that to stall for time.
Lu Xi tugged at her wrinkled clothes, her narrow eyes looking down at her. “An agreed-upon divorce is the most peaceful way for both of us. Since you don’t want that, don’t blame me for being ruthless. Tomorrow, I’ll have my lawyer come to you.”
With that, Lu Xi didn’t want to stay for another moment and walked out with long strides.
“No!” Si Yu rushed toward her in a tearful frenzy. Her fingertips brushed through the woman’s smooth, long hair, and she lost her balance, falling to the ground with a dull thud. She lay there, gazing mournfully at the retreating figure. “Lu Xi, please don’t go…”
Lu Xi didn’t stop.
Is she that cold-blooded? Someone fell, and she can’t even look back, let alone help!
As if hearing her thoughts, Lu Xi suddenly turned around just as she reached the door, her gaze meeting Si Yu’s tearful eyes.
There’s a chance.
Si Yu was secretly delighted. She squeezed out a few more tears, furrowed her brow, and said with a pained expression, “It hurts so much.”
Lu Xi’s gaze swept from her “beautifully pained” face down to the thick wool rug she was lying on. She said in a sarcastic tone, “Trying that trick again? Next time you want to fall, remember to move the rug first.”
Si Yu: “…”
The door opened, then closed. Lu Xi left without looking back.
Si Yu pounded the thick rug beneath her. She had acted so well—how was she seen through?
She carefully replayed Lu Xi’s words. What did she mean, “trying that trick again”? Did the original “Si Yu” also fake falls?
“Oh, my—” Aunt Zhao, who had finished tidying the kitchen, rushed over to help Si Yu up. “Are you alright?”
The rug was thick; the fall didn’t hurt at all. Since Lu Xi was gone, there was no need to act. Si Yu smiled and said, “I’m fine.”
Aunt Zhao saw her tear-streaked face and assumed she was just putting on a brave face. She had overheard some of the conversation from the kitchen and asked cautiously, “Did you and Miss Lu Xi have a fight?”
The book didn’t have many details about the female supporting character’s daily life, aside from a few scenes where she harmed the protagonist. From their brief interaction, Si Yu could tell that Aunt Zhao didn’t hate the original character; she seemed to genuinely care.
Wiping her tears, she said, “Auntie, I don’t want to divorce her anymore, but she said she’ll have a lawyer come see me. What should I do?”
“Well…” Aunt Zhao looked troubled. “Didn’t you say yesterday that if you love her, you should set her free and let her go? Why don’t you want to divorce anymore?”
Does your memory have to be that good?
Si Yu felt her face burning with embarrassment. She put on a brave face and said sorrowfully, “I thought about it all night. Life is too short to give up so easily. Staying by her side is the most enduring confession of love. I want to keep guarding her and warm her with my love. One day, she will be moved.”
“You’ve been married for two years. If she were going to be moved, she would have been by now. Miss Lu Xi still doesn’t feel anything for you…” Aunt Zhao couldn’t bear it and earnestly advised, “Miss Si, maybe you should just give up. Miss Lu Xi is indeed perfect and brilliant, and you love her so much, but she doesn’t love you back. Why waste your youth on just one person?”
Si Yu understood the logic, but who could understand her predicament?
She lowered her eyes and said stubbornly, “I will make her fall in love with me.”
Aunt Zhao seemed accustomed to her stubbornness. She stopped trying to persuade her, let out a heavy sigh, and went back to her chores.
As soon as Aunt Zhao was gone, Si Yu stopped crying.
The most pressing issue was the divorce.
At 10 PM, Lu Xi still hadn’t returned. Si Yu thought for a moment and decided to call her to check in.
She picked up her phone, found the contact labeled “Lu Xi,” and called.
“The number you have dialed is currently switched off…”
Si Yu was stunned, then slowly remembered that she had been blocked.
Why did she block her?
The novel had mentioned it: The villainous “Si Yu” loved Lu Xi madly, but Lu Xi had no feelings for her. Their marriage was an agreement. Although they lived together after marriage, they slept in separate rooms. To get Lu Xi’s pity, “Si Yu” faked a suicide attempt by slitting her wrists. Lu Xi rushed back, found out she had been tricked, and left in a rage, blocking all of “Si Yu’s” contact information.
For a marriage to be like this, the wife was truly a failure.
After complaining to herself, Si Yu called out to Aunt Zhao, who was about to go to bed.
Aunt Zhao listened to her request and called Lu Xi from her own phone. This time, it connected.
“Miss Lu Xi, are you still busy?” Aunt Zhao asked. “I saved some late-night food for you. Miss Si is waiting for you too. When are you coming home?”
The call was on speaker. After a two-second wait, Si Yu heard the woman on the other end say without emotion, “Don’t save any food for me. I’m not coming home tonight. I have something to do; I’m hanging up now.”
And she did, without giving anyone a chance to respond.
Si Yu and Aunt Zhao looked at each other.
It seemed Lu Xi was deliberately avoiding her.
Lu Xi was a woman of action. The next day, she had a lawyer show up at the door.
The lawyer was in a sharp suit, serious and unsmiling, but his attitude was respectful. “Hello, CEO Lu sent me to discuss the divorce proceedings with you. Is now a good time?”
“No, it’s not,” Si Yu said with a tight-lipped smile. “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
Slam—
The lawyer, who had been shut out, was speechless.
Aunt Zhao saw this and said with concern, “The lawyer is here. It seems Miss Lu Xi is determined to get a divorce.”
Si Yu leaned her back against the door, biting her finger.
Stalling like this wouldn’t work forever. She had to talk to Lu Xi in person.
Lu Xi didn’t come back last night, and it was the weekend today, so Si Yu didn’t know if she would be at the company. She asked Aunt Zhao first.
“She’s probably gone to see her grandmother,” Aunt Zhao said. “I heard that the matriarch of the Lu family is very ill. Miss Lu Xi goes to be with her every weekend.”
Si Yu realized that she, the “wife,” knew less about Lu Xi’s family than Aunt Zhao did. It wasn’t her fault, though; the author of the novel only wrote about the romance between the protagonist and Lu Xi, without providing any other details.
She shamelessly said, “Could you call her for me again and ask where she is?”
Aunt Zhao, who knew she had been blocked by Lu Xi, gave her a sympathetic look and said, “Of course, I’ll call her for you.”
After asking Lu Xi, she confirmed that she was at the Lu family’s estate.
Si Yu had never been there, so she had a driver take her.
The car stopped in front of a grand villa.
A housekeeper for the Lu family opened the door for her. The housekeeper looked surprised. “Miss Si? What are you doing here?”
The female supporting character was married into the family, so why did the housekeeper look at her like that, as if she shouldn’t be here?
Si Yu found it strange but didn’t have time to dwell on it. She smiled and said, “I came to see Grandma.”
Lu Xi didn’t want to see her, so using the excuse of visiting her grandmother seemed like a plausible reason.
The housekeeper’s expression was telling. “The old madam is in the backyard,” she said.
Guided by the housekeeper, Si Yu went to the backyard.
She had assumed Lu Xi would be there, which was why she hadn’t asked. But on the lawn, there was only a white-haired old woman in a wheelchair and another housekeeper. Lu Xi was nowhere to be found.
The old woman must be Lu Xi’s grandmother.
Si Yu shifted her gaze, her face full of smiles as she walked forward. “Hello, Grandma.”
The old woman’s skin was sickly pale. Her clouded eyes looked her up and down for a long time, then they lit up. She said in a trembling voice, “Qiao, Qiao Qiao?”
Si Yu: “???”
The housekeeper pushing the wheelchair behind the old woman bowed and said, “She’s not Qiao Qiao. This is Miss Si Yu.”
Si Yu was completely bewildered.
As she stood there stunned, a withered hand grabbed hers like a pair of iron pliers. The old woman’s wrinkled face was filled with a smile. She said excitedly, “That’s right, it’s Qiao Qiao! Qiao Qiao, you’re finally back! Come, let Grandma have a good look at you.”
Si Yu was utterly confused. She gave the housekeeper a pleading, questioning look.
The housekeeper sighed and whispered into her ear, “The old madam’s memory has been getting worse ever since she developed Alzheimer’s. She must have mistaken you for Miss Qiao Qiao.”
Si Yu: “…”
Ignoring who “Qiao Qiao” was for a moment, Si Yu’s heart ached at the words “Alzheimer’s.”
Looking at the old woman who was desperately holding her hand, Si Yu’s eyes suddenly welled up. She slowly crouched down to be at eye level with the old woman, forcing a smile. She said in a gentle voice, “Grandma, I’m back to see you.”
The old woman affectionately stroked her face. “You’ve gotten so thin. Are you not eating properly again?”
The old woman’s palm was rough against Si Yu’s cheek. She wanted to say something, but when she opened her mouth, a sob caught in her throat.
“Why are you crying?” The old woman saw her eyes turning red and said with a pained look, “Did they bully you again?”
“I…”
Si Yu had only gotten out one word when she was interrupted by a cold, familiar voice: “Who told you to come here?”
Before she could even figure out what was happening, a cold hand grabbed her wrist, and she was roughly pulled up. She met a pair of furious eyes.
Lu Xi had appeared out of nowhere. She pulled her to the side, her voice laced with a warning. “Don’t touch my grandmother.”
This was the first time Si Yu had seen Lu Xi with an angry expression. She couldn’t help but wonder, Wasn’t Lu Xi’s character supposed to be a cold, expressionless ice queen? Does a person like that get angry?
Si Yu didn’t know what terrible thing she had done to anger this ice queen. Her delicate wrist was held tightly in Lu Xi’s grip, and it hurt a little. She looked back at the old woman, pouted, and said in a pitiful voice, “Grandma, look. She’s bullying me.”
