The Whole World Wants Them to Get a Divorce - Chapter 8
Lu Zhennan still hadn’t returned, and Lu Wei had left, so only the three women ate dinner together.
The old woman trusted Si Yu completely and didn’t mention Liang Yufei’s fall into the water again. Tang Jie wanted to but didn’t dare.
As for Lu Xi…
Through her observations over the last two days, Si Yu had noticed that Lu Xi was usually a very focused eater, but this time, her gaze kept falling on Si Yu. When Si Yu looked back at her, Lu Xi would pretend not to care and look away.
Did she have a flower on her face?
This made Si Yu lose her appetite.
After dinner, she pushed the old woman for a walk. Si Yu then squatted down and said, “Grandma, I have to go home now.”
She had been here for two days without a change of clothes. If she stayed any longer, she would start to smell.
The old woman held her hand, her eyes full of affection.
Si Yu joked, “I’m not leaving for good. I’ll come back often to see you.”
The old woman’s eyes welled up with tears. She squeezed Si Yu’s hand tightly. “This is your home, too. Next time, remember to bring your luggage.”
Si Yu rubbed her face against the old woman’s dry palm and nodded obediently. “I’ll come back tomorrow.”
The old woman smiled. “Tomorrow is Monday. Don’t you have to work?”
Si Yu was caught off guard. She quickly asked Little B, “What does the female supporting character do for a living?”
Besides the few times the female supporting character tried to harm the protagonist, the author had only mentioned her in passing. She couldn’t remember what her job was.
Little B: “She doesn’t have a job.”
Si Yu: “She doesn’t???”
Little B: “‘Si Yu’ is a second-generation rich kid. Her parents left her a huge fortune. The interest from the bank and her company dividends are enough for her to live a wealthy life forever. She doesn’t need to work.”
Si Yu: “…”
Little B: “You even left a comment under the article saying how much you envied her.”
Who wouldn’t envy a life of sitting around, waiting to die with more money than they could ever spend?
But besides the envy, Si Yu suddenly understood why Lu Xi hated the female supporting character so much. She was useless and manipulative and poisonous. Who would like a woman like that?
Compared to the protagonist, who worked hard and succeeded in the entertainment industry, the female supporting character was a complete waste of space.
If the old woman knew she was lazy and didn’t work, would she be disappointed in her, too?
Si Yu said awkwardly, “I’m looking for a job right now. I’m not that busy.”
The old woman said, “Just have your father set you up with a position at the company. Why are you looking for a job on your own?”
Si Yu said firmly, “I don’t want to rely on others. I want to make it on my own.”
The old woman was about to say something else, but seeing her determined eyes, she gave up. She patted her head and said with a sigh, “Qiao Qiao has grown up.”
Si Yu’s smile was a little forced.
Under a magnolia tree not far away, Lu Xi was secretly observing them. She saw them laughing and knew they were talking, but she couldn’t hear what they were saying.
After watching for a while and not seeing anything unusual, Lu Xi slowly walked over.
When the old woman saw her, she said with a smile, “Xi Xi, are you leaving soon, too? Can you give Qiao Qiao a ride?”
After getting married, Lu Xi rarely stayed at home, only coming back on weekends to spend time with her family.
She glanced at Si Yu, who looked at her with anticipation. Her eyes flickered, and she gave a nonchalant “Mmm.”
This was the first time Si Yu had been in Lu Xi’s car. Besides a tissue box, there were no decorations. It was simple yet elegant.
There was no air freshener, but a pleasant, cool scent wafted from the person beside her.
Si Yu took a sniff and couldn’t help but ask, “What perfume do you wear? It smells so good.”
Lu Xi looked at her through the rearview mirror, her eyes and voice indifferent. “I never wear perfume.”
Natural body scent?
Si Yu knew some girls naturally had a nice smell, but unfortunately, she wasn’t one of them.
Silence filled the car.
Si Yu thought Lu Xi would ask her about Liang Yufei’s accident, but she didn’t say a word.
What baffled her even more was that from the moment Liang Yufei showed up to the moment she left, Lu Xi had almost no interaction with her besides those two questions.
Just as Little B had said, at this point, Lu Xi had no feelings for Liang Yufei.
Si Yu tried to recall the plot and remembered the scene where they first connected: The protagonist was filming, and Lu Xi went to the set as a producer. When a prop almost hit the protagonist, Lu Xi bravely saved her.
It was cheesy, but it made sense.
Thinking of this, Si Yu started to worry about the divorce again. She had her grandmother on her side in the Lu house, but now that they were alone, would Lu Xi bring it up again?
To avoid a conversation, Si Yu simply closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep, silently praying that Lu Xi wouldn’t bring up the topic.
After some time, she heard Lu Xi’s cold voice say, “Get out of the car.”
Si Yu carefully opened her eyes. She saw the familiar building outside, recognized it as her and Lu Xi’s shared home, and gave a fake yawn. “We’re here already?”
Lu Xi unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car.
Si Yu thought Lu Xi would leave after dropping her off, just like she had been avoiding her the day before. It wasn’t until she saw Lu Xi go into the house that she realized and scurried after her.
Aunt Zhao saw them come in together and said happily, “You’re back? Did you eat yet?”
“Auntie, we’ve already eaten,” Si Yu said with a cheerful smile.
Aunt Zhao glanced at Lu Xi, who looked unreadable, and said, “Do you want some fruit? I’ll go wash some.”
“You can have some,” Lu Xi said before going into the study.
Aunt Zhao looked at Lu Xi’s back and hesitated. “Miss Si, are you two still getting a divorce?”
Si Yu shrugged. “I don’t know.”
With the grandmother’s involvement, the divorce shouldn’t happen for a while, right? she thought.
Lu Xi hadn’t explicitly brought it up, so Si Yu couldn’t guess her attitude. She was also worried that the grandmother might have a moment of clarity one day, find out she wasn’t Qiao Qiao, and get angry.
Tang Jie had said that when she and Lu Xi got married, the old woman was the first to object. Lu Wei had said that the old woman had always disliked her. It seemed the female supporting character was truly unlikeable.
Aunt Zhao saw her furrowed brows and didn’t dare ask any more questions. She put the fruit where Si Yu could reach and went back to her room.
Si Yu temporarily cleared her mind of all the nonsense, went upstairs, into her room, and turned on the computer.
There was no internet.
Si Yu didn’t know the Wi-Fi password. She carried the computer downstairs and asked Aunt Zhao.
Aunt Zhao didn’t know either.
Si Yu found the router and saw a handwritten password on it. She typed it in, one by one, and finally connected.
“What are you doing with the computer?” Aunt Zhao asked.
“Looking for a job.” Si Yu was too lazy to run up and down the stairs, so she put the computer on the coffee table in the living room.
Aunt Zhao thought she was hearing things. “You’re looking for a job?”
“Yeah.”
Aunt Zhao: “…”
Aunt Zhao had taken care of her for two years and had never seen her work. She didn’t know what was going on with her. She silently placed the fruit where Si Yu could reach it and went back to her room.
Si Yu had studied acting. A talent agency had discovered her before she even graduated. She signed with them right after graduation. She had never actually looked for a job on her own, but she knew she had to submit a resume.
She typed “Guangying Entertainment” into the search bar. It was the most powerful talent agency in the country and had a close relationship with her. She needed to learn about it.
Time passed slowly. Aunt Zhao came out to use the restroom and saw her still busy. She asked her if she wanted a late-night snack.
“I’m not hungry,” Si Yu said, looking up at the closed study door on the second floor. She saw that Lu Xi still hadn’t come out. “You should ask her if she wants to eat.”
Aunt Zhao said, “Lu Xi never eats late-night snacks.”
“Then don’t disturb her,” Si Yu said with a smile. “Auntie, you should go to bed.”
“You should go to bed early, too.”
“I will.”
When Si Yu was focused, she completely forgot about time and blocked out all other sounds.
At midnight, Lu Xi finished her work and opened the study door. She saw the lights on downstairs and looked over.
She saw Si Yu sitting on the living room rug, looking at something on her computer. She subconsciously wanted to ask why she wasn’t asleep, but she swallowed the words.
Lu Xi had a Monday morning meeting and usually arrived at the office half an hour early. She got up at seven, got ready, and went downstairs, where she found Si Yu asleep on the coffee table. Her face was covered by her messy hair, and she was loosely holding a pen.
Fruit peels, a tissue box, and a pillow were scattered on the rug. The word “messy” was the only way to describe it.
She slept like that all night?
Lu Xi frowned. She walked over and picked up the tissue box and pillow.
Maybe her movements weren’t light enough. The head on the table moved a few times, and Si Yu slowly woke up.
Their eyes met.
The first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was a beautiful face. Si Yu thought she was dreaming. She was stunned for a few seconds before waving at her and saying in a raspy voice, “Morning.”
Lu Xi’s eyes moved over her flushed cheek and bloodshot eyes. She said with a slight frown, “What are you doing here?”
“I want to find a job. I have to understand the market first.”
“You’re looking for a job?”
Even though her face was expressionless, Si Yu heard a different meaning in her raised tone.
She doesn’t believe her?
Of course she doesn’t. The original character was useless, and Lu Xi’s prejudice against her wouldn’t disappear overnight.
Si Yu felt a little annoyed. She wanted to show her the research and resume she had worked on all night. When she looked up, she pulled a muscle in her neck and let out a pained “Ow.”
Lu Xi was confused. “What are you yelling for?”
“I have a stiff neck,” Si Yu said, on the verge of tears.
Lu Xi: “…”
Not only did she have a stiff neck, but she also realized that her legs were so numb she could barely feel them. She tried to stand up, but her legs were so sore and numb that it felt like they were being pricked with needles.
She grimaced, struggling to move her half-paralyzed body.
Lu Xi watched her coolly. She was torn between “is she acting” and “is she really numb.” After a moment, she bent down and reached out her hand to her.
Si Yu grabbed her arms, trying to use them to stand up. With her lower body almost completely numb, she couldn’t control her strength.
Lu Xi was already a little unstable in her high heels. When Si Yu pulled her hard, her body swayed, and her face changed.
It all happened in an instant.
Thump.
Si Yu’s head hit the hard armrest of the sofa. She groaned and looked at Lu Xi, who was on top of her. “Are you trying to murder your wife?”
Lu Xi’s thin lips were pressed together. She said with suppressed anger, “Why are you so clumsy?”
Si Yu: Is it my fault?
Well, yes, it is.
Si Yu blinked her teary eyes.
This seemed to be the closest they had ever been. So close that she could hear Lu Xi’s breathing.
The intoxicating cool scent wafted around her nose.
Si Yu’s gaze fell on Lu Xi’s sexy, thin lips. She paused and asked Little B, “What do you think will happen if I kiss her?”
Little B: “You’ll probably get hit.”
Si Yu: “Why?”
Little B: “Because you haven’t brushed your teeth, and she’s a clean freak.”
Si Yu: “……………”
