The Whole World Wants Them to Get a Divorce - Chapter 9
Guangying Entertainment Headquarters.
There were five people in the secretarial department. Besides the special assistant who was leading the meeting, three were long-time employees, and one was a new assistant.
Monday was the most motivated day, and also the most hectic.
Zhang Manni pretended to be busy, her eyes glancing over her computer toward the panoramic conference room across the way.
The glass was spotless. From her angle, she could see the person sitting at the head of the table—Lu Xi, the beautiful CEO who made all the female artists at Guangying feel inferior.
She’s so, so beautiful!
Zhang Manni’s heart was fluttering, and her mind wasn’t on her work.
The glass was soundproof, so she couldn’t hear what was being said inside, but she saw a few executives stand up. Zhang Manni jumped up, making a commotion that startled her colleague next to her.
Her colleague teased her. “Did you get a nail stuck in your chair?”
Zhang Manni’s eyes lit up as she looked at the bustling conference room. She couldn’t hide her excitement. “Ms. Lu is done with her meeting. I’m going to make her coffee!”
Before anyone else could react, she grabbed her small makeup bag and dashed to the pantry.
The new assistant, Xiao Mi, watched her run gracefully in her high heels and said, “I could have done that small task. Why did Sister Manni go herself?”
The two veteran colleagues exchanged knowing smiles.
One of them said, “Of course she’d want to do something like that.”
Xiao Mi didn’t understand what was so great about making a cup of coffee.
“Look at her. She dresses up every day, wears low-cut tops… it’s all to seduce Ms. Lu.”
The other colleague said scornfully, “She’s so flirtatious, it’s disgusting.”
Xiao Mi listened, wide-eyed.
As the new assistant, Xiao Mi did all the miscellaneous tasks, including delivering documents to the CEO. The first time she saw Lu Xi, she was stunned by her beauty and an ethereal aura. If she hadn’t seen her sign documents in a graceful, flowing script, she would have thought she was a celebrity she didn’t know about.
Ms. Lu was so beautiful, so cold, and her presence was so intimidating. Xiao Mi only ever dared to look at her in secret. She was too nervous to even speak clearly in front of Ms. Lu. How could anyone be bold enough to try and seduce her?
Zhang Manni was pretty and had a good figure, but Xiao Mi felt that someone as vulgar as Zhang Manni wasn’t good enough for Ms. Lu.
She even felt that someone as beautiful as Ms. Lu was only meant to be admired from afar and that getting involved in love would be a disillusioning experience.
The colleague continued, “Our Ms. Lu is indeed a stunner. The number of big shots pursuing her could form a hundred soccer teams, but she’s just completely indifferent. Two years ago, a woman added me on WeChat and asked me to report Ms. Lu’s whereabouts every day. She said to let her know immediately if anyone tried to get close to Ms. Lu. And every time, she’d send me a large red envelope.”
Xiao Mi was intrigued. “Was she also one of Ms. Lu’s admirers?”
“Yeah,” the colleague said jokingly. “She’s been pursuing her for two years and still hasn’t succeeded. She’s persistent. This woman is very generous with her red envelopes. She’s rich and foolish. But she didn’t reply to my last message. I wonder if she’s given up.”
“She’s so rich,” Xiao Mi said, unable to resist asking. “How old is she? Is she pretty?”
“I don’t know,” the colleague replied. “She blocked me from seeing her posts, and her profile picture isn’t of herself.”
The other colleague said in a sarcastic tone, “If she was pretty, why would she be afraid for you to see her posts? She’s probably a fat, old rich lady.”
The colleague didn’t comment. She secretly took out her phone, opened WeChat, found the contact named “Si Yu,” and told the woman that Zhang Manni was trying to seduce Ms. Lu.
After sending the message, she said happily to her two friends, “I’ll treat you guys to something to eat once she sends the red envelope.”
Lu Xi had no idea her secretaries were talking about her. After a two-hour morning meeting, she looked a little tired. She left the conference room with the respectful gazes of the other executives on her.
When she returned to her office, she hadn’t even settled into her chair before the door was pushed open. “Big sis, are you done with work?”
Seeing that it was Lu Wei, Lu Xi’s calm face showed a hint of displeasure. “If you don’t knock again, I’ll have someone kick you out.”
Based on Lu Wei’s understanding of her cold-faced older sister, she knew that wasn’t a threat. She stuck out her tongue and lowered her head in apology. “I won’t do it again.”
She had a pile of documents to review. Lu Xi didn’t have time for small talk. “I have no money for you, and if you need resources, talk to your agent.”
Lu Wei always came to Lu Xi for these two things. Her face flushed after being caught. But today, she was here for her best friend. “I want to talk to you about Si Yu.”
Lu Xi stopped unscrewing her fountain pen. Her long, narrow phoenix eyes swept over her. “What’s there to talk about with her?”
Afraid of being kicked out, Lu Wei didn’t beat around the bush. She walked in front of her. “She was the one who pushed Yufei into the water that day. She’s lying when she says it was an accident. Grandma is confused and she’s fooling her, but how can someone as smart as you believe that nonsense?”
Lu Xi placed her pen down. She clasped her long, slender fingers together. “Si Yu fell into the water, and Uncle Chen saved her. Uncle Chen personally took her home. She wasn’t lying about that.”
Uncle Chen was the driver Lu Zhennan had hired for Si Yu. He had worked for the Lu family for over a decade and was a loyal and honest man.
When Aunt Zhao had called her and told her that Si Yu had fallen into the water and passed out, Lu Xi thought she was up to her old tricks. She never expected Liang Yufei to be involved.
Lu Wei said anxiously, “I’m not saying she’s lying about passing out, but she was the one who pushed Yufei into the water first. And she’s pretending she jumped in to save Yufei. Bullshit! She’s not that nice.”
After two years of marriage, Si Yu was always up to something, but when it came to hurting someone…
Even if Si Yu was malicious, did she have the guts to do it?
As for Liang Yufei’s accusation that Si Yu pushed her into the water, Lu Xi found it full of holes: Why wouldn’t she choose a more secluded spot? There were so many people at the gala. Wasn’t she afraid of getting caught? Why was Si Yu in the water, too? The pool deck was wide open. How could she accidentally fall in? If she was trying to save someone, Si Yu couldn’t swim. Would she jump in and try to die?
Out of the four questions, only the last one could barely support the idea that Si Yu was trying to harm her.
Without evidence, Liang Yufei’s words alone were unconvincing.
Lu Xi looked at the outraged Lu Wei and said flatly, “Liang Yufei has already accepted that it was a misunderstanding. Why are you still dwelling on it?”
“That’s because she’s too kind! I can’t stand seeing her being bullied.”
“Are you saying that Grandma and I teamed up with Si Yu to bully her?”
Lu Wei shuddered when she met Lu Xi’s suddenly cold gaze. She quickly changed her tune. “I’m not saying you and Grandma are bullies. I just think Si Yu is too cunning. Big sis, don’t let her fool you. Hurry up and divorce her!”
Lu Xi had her own judgment about what kind of person Si Yu was and whether she was lying. Hearing the word “divorce,” her pale eyes flickered. “She’s already signed the divorce agreement. As for the divorce… we might have to wait a little.”
“Why do we have to wait?” Lu Wei was even more agitated than she was.
“Because of Grandma.”
“Achoo—”
Si Yu rubbed her nose, wondering why she was sneezing so much today.
“Are you getting sick? Do you want to take some cold medicine to prevent it?” the old woman asked worriedly.
Si Yu didn’t feel like she was coming down with a cold, but to reassure the old woman, she obeyed.
The old woman immediately told a housekeeper to make some medicine for her.
Si Yu stopped the housekeeper. “I’ll do it myself. You go ahead and do what you need to do.”
The Lu family had two housekeepers, a chef, a driver, and a butler. It sounded like a lot of people, but everyone had their own duties. The villa was huge, and it took a lot of time for the two housekeepers to clean it every day. Si Yu didn’t want to bother anyone with a small task like making medicine.
After drinking the medicine, Si Yu went to wash the bowl and heard her phone ping twice.
It had been a few days since she came to this world. Besides a few calls with Aunt Zhao and Uncle Chen, her phone had never rung. She thought it was junk mail. She picked it up and saw it was a WeChat message.
Liu Meimei: “Si Yu, are you there?”
Liu Meimei: “Zhang Manni from the HR department is trying to seduce Ms. Lu again [Image].”
She clicked on the image. It was a picture of a curvy woman holding a coffee cup. Her face was powdered pale, and her lipstick was red as blood. She had a flirty smile on her face.
Who is this?
And who is Liu Meimei?
Ms. Lu???
With a head full of questions, Si Yu quickly looked through the female supporting character’s past chats with Liu Meimei and had a moment of clarity.
Liu Meimei was the original female supporting character’s spy on Lu Xi!
She wasn’t sure what the relationship between the original character and Liu Meimei was, but she scrolled down and saw a lot of red envelopes. Si Yu looked down on the dirty money-based relationship between the two and fell into deep thought.
She thought she only had to deal with the protagonist as a potential love rival. She never expected there to be so many other “demons” in the company.
She opened the picture again. Si Yu pouted. “How dare a vulgar woman like you try to seduce Lu Xi?”
Lu Xi obviously liked the pure, innocent type like the protagonist!
At around 10 p.m., Lu Xi, who had a long day at work, returned home. She entered the fingerprint password and pushed the door open.
The living room lights were on. Si Yu was sitting on the rug with her computer. When she heard the noise, she ran over barefoot, her face bare, a bright smile on her face, and her voice sweet and clear. “You’re back.”
Lu Xi was stunned for a moment before she recognized that it was Si Yu. Her eyes flickered.
This wasn’t the first time Lu Xi had seen Si Yu without makeup, but she felt like something was different. She looked closer and realized her hairstyle had changed—the wine-red color was now pure black, the long, curly hair was straightened and cut in half, and the choppy bangs were now a thin layer over her forehead.
The mature style had been replaced with a fresh, youthful one.
Looking at the woman whose whole vibe had changed, Lu Xi was reminded of what the housekeeper had told her.
She had heard that Si Yu had gone to see her grandmother again today. Before coming home, Lu Xi had made a detour to the Lu house to ask the housekeeper if there had been anything out of the ordinary about Si Yu.
The housekeeper said, “Nothing unusual. Miss Si spent the whole day with the old woman. The old woman was so happy. She also learned how to make pastries with the chef. She’s surprisingly good at it. I had no idea she was so clever with her hands.”
Lu Xi found it strange. “She made pastries?”
“Yes,” the housekeeper said with a smile. “My mop broke, and she fixed it for me. When we had to clean the sterilizer, she and the chef carried it out together. I don’t know where she gets all that strength. To be honest, after spending these past few days with her, I’ve noticed that Miss Si is different. She used to look down on us and wouldn’t talk to us, but now she’s so friendly. It’s like she’s a different person. I’ve lived for a long time and seen all kinds of people, and I don’t think she’s faking it.”
If she hadn’t heard these words from the housekeeper who had worked for the Lu family for almost twenty years, Lu Xi would have suspected Si Yu was trying to win her over.
It was hard to say if her personality had changed, but the person in front of her was certainly different.
A hairstyle could make such a difference in a person’s appearance.
Lu Xi suddenly felt that this girl-next-door style suited Si Yu better. It was much more pleasing to the eye than her previous fake-mature look.
Si Yu didn’t know what was going through her mind. She ran her fingers through her new hair and asked, “Do you like my new haircut?”
Maybe it was because of what the housekeeper had said, or maybe it was because those eyes were so clean and transparent. Lu Xi temporarily forgot how much she hated this woman. Her red lips parted slightly, and she said, “It’s nice.”
