- Chapter 10 - Preparing for Cohabitation
Unsurprisingly, Tang Yun suffered from insomnia. Having not slept well for two consecutive nights, she felt as if a succubus had drained her energy. She woke up with unprecedented dark circles under her eyes, and when she looked in the mirror, she felt like a plain-looking, lonely ghost, especially compared to the Qin Jue beside her.
Consequently, Tang Yun was even more confused. How could Qin Jue be interested in her? Was she not at all picky? Putting herself in Qin Jue’s shoes, Tang Yun felt that if she were Qin Jue, spending money to sleep with someone like Tang Yun was a double loss of both person and money. It would be better to take care of her physical needs herself in front of a mirror.
After washing up, Tang Yun was about to go out to buy breakfast for Qin Jue. Qin Jue, on the hospital bed, looked up and stared at her, her eyes carrying a silent accusation. Tang Yun inexplicably felt a foot shorter.
It seemed she really lacked experience in waiting on a madam.
“I know, I’ll buy good food,” Tang Yun said softly.
But who knew what the wicked capitalist ate for breakfast?
“Old Qin, did you miss me?” Mo Quan burst in aggressively, carrying two stacks of hotel takeout boxes.
For the first time, Tang Yun felt that Mo Quan was like a godsend.
Mo Quan naturally moved Qin Jue’s laptop aside and placed the dim sum she had packed from her own hotel onto Qin Jue’s small table, grinning: “Stop looking. Your little sweet water is still here. Who are you chatting with now, another beautiful Omega?”
“No chatting, I’m reading the financial reports,” Qin Jue said.
Mo Quan looked at Qin Jue with an expression reserved for aliens. After a long pause, she managed to squeeze out one sentence: “You’re incredible.”
“So, are you really planning to stand up to your cheap brother-in-law-to-be all the way?” Mo Quan asked in a low voice.
“First, it’s not certain yet if he’s the brother-in-law,” Qin Jue smiled.
Mo Quan gave Qin Jue a thumbs-up.
While the two were talking, Tang Yun silently opened the lids of the takeout boxes and arranged them one by one on the table. The exquisite shrimp dumplings and siu mai smelled fresh and fragrant, and the rich seafood congee was steaming hot. Mo Quan had answered Qin Jue with action: this is what their wicked capitalists ate for breakfast.
“Mo Quan, is this your apology?” Qin Jue asked.
Mo Quan chuckled twice, “The way you put it… Yes, it is.”
“Yesterday was my fault. If I had known your body was so fragile now, I definitely wouldn’t have dragged you to ride horses. My fault, my fault,” Mo Quan cleanly admitted her mistake.
“In that case, your chef is good. You cover all my three meals during my hospitalization. I’ll have the driver pick them up,” Qin Jue said to Mo Quan.
“Fine,” Mo Quan readily agreed.
After last night’s meal, Qin Jue had a deep and negative impression of the hospital cafeteria, thus keeping her distance. She also gained a deep understanding of Tang Yun’s caretaking skills, but frustratingly, she couldn’t keep her distance from Tang Yun.
Qin Jue glanced meaningfully at Tang Yun. Tang Yun clearly understood her implication and lowered her head silently.
“Speaking of which, your little sweet water isn’t very old, is she? Is she graduated? Old Qin, bastard though you may be, don’t ruin the girl’s future,” Mo Quan said.
Mo Quan had originally thought that by exerting pressure on both Qin Jue and Tang Yun, the two would definitely part ways. But she didn’t expect Qin Jue to be more resolute than she thought, so she had to continue probing miserably.
“It’s fine, no harm done. She’s my employee now,” Qin Jue smiled.
Mo Quan: “?”
“I believe I introduced her. Miss Tang, my new secretary,” Qin Jue said.
Compared to being a benefactor, Qin Jue was more accustomed to being a boss. When she found the loophole in the System, she had decided to use a pure employer-employee relationship to blur the line on what the System called “making her yours.” As for Tang Yun’s position, it had slipped out in front of Mrs. Qin, and Qin Jue saw no harm in keeping it that way.
Mo Quan: “…”
“After I’m discharged, you’ll come back to the company with me and work normal hours. No problem?” Qin Jue turned to ask Tang Yun.
Tang Yun: “No… problem…”
Really?
Changfeng Technology was an old, established game company in the industry, a dream company for her and many of her classmates. When she first started university, before the family accident, she had dreamed of getting an offer from Changfeng Technology and building a career. But now, when she had completely given up on her once-shining dream, the offer was suddenly thrown at her.
Wait, did Qin Jue mean “normal hours” in the way she understood it?
“No, Qin Jue, are you serious?” Mo Quan asked the question Tang Yun most wanted to ask.
“I had the kid write a proposal a couple of days ago. Although it was naive, she has some ideas. Her mind is good,” Qin Jue commented.
It was then that Tang Yun remembered. Her rushed, overnight proposal draft was still on Qin Jue’s laptop. When did she look at it? Did Qin Jue’s earlier mention of checking it mean she was actually serious?
Mo Quan was greatly shocked: “Then your relationship is… a pure employment relationship?”
Qin Jue pursed her lips and smiled. All four pairs of eyes present focused on her face, plus the System, which loved a good drama, all awaited her statement.
System: “Host, please watch your words and actions. This is a very serious character collapse. There is no room for ambiguity!”
Qin Jue laughed: “What are you thinking? Of course, it’s an impure employment relationship.”
Mo Quan: “…”
Tang Yun: “…”
System: “Yay!”
“The salary I’m paying Miss Tang should already cover night shift allowances. So, I’ve bought out both her day and night hours,” Qin Jue said.
The hope on Tang Yun’s face slowly stiffened, becoming comical and pathetic. Mo Quan seemed unable to bear it any longer. This time, she chose to speak directly in front of both Tang Yun and Qin Jue.
“Let the girl go, and let yourself go, too,” Mo Quan said.
“Miss Tang and I signed the contract voluntarily. On what grounds do you assume I’m the one not letting her go?” Qin Jue countered.
Tang Yun’s throat tightened. Qin Jue was right. She was willing. She had taken Qin Jue’s money, and she had already spent it. She had no other choice and couldn’t even return the money.
“CEO Mo, I’m quite willing to work for CEO Qin, truly,” Tang Yun said softly under Qin Jue’s gaze, earning a look of satisfaction from Qin Jue.
Mo Quan was so annoyed she started pacing the ward.
“Fine. Since you two are mutually willing, I won’t say another word,” Mo Quan said through clenched teeth.
Knock, knock—
The ward door was knocked, and immediately after, Qin Jue’s attending physician, Yu Mu, walked in with several graduate students. It was time for rounds.
“Doctor, what is the earliest I can be discharged?” Qin Jue asked.
In fact, she felt she could be discharged immediately; she didn’t feel any discomfort.
Yu Mu frowned at Qin Jue’s test results, turned her head to whisper a few words to the graduate students behind her, and then said sternly to Qin Jue: “At least one week of observation in the hospital. No negotiation.”
Associate Director Yu’s rounds were swift and efficient. The accompanying graduate students scribbled furiously in their notebooks. After rearranging the tests Qin Jue needed that day, she turned to leave. Mo Quan remained frozen in the posture she adopted when Yu Mu entered, staring blankly at Yu Mu’s retreating figure.
“Mo Quan, she’s gone. Stop staring!” Qin Jue reminded her.
“Who was staring? I wasn’t staring,” Mo Quan insisted stubbornly.
“I’m warning you, don’t mess with Director Yu. I’m still a patient here,” Qin Jue said leisurely.
“The way you talk. Am I that kind of person?” Mo Quan retorted with a cheeky smile, showing no proper seriousness.
Qin Jue’s ward was clearly not going to be quiet today. After welcoming Mo Quan early in the morning, before the morning was even over, the second visitor arrived: CEO Qin’s assistant, Jian Zhen.
The young female Beta, dressed in a sharp and well-fitting professional suit, entered carrying a bulging laptop bag, from which she pulled out several documents.
“CEO Qin, I have sent you all the materials for the Xun Dao Phase III project. These are the documents currently requiring your or CEO Guan’s signature. I brought them over as you requested. Please review them,” Jian Zhen said.
Qin Jue started to discuss business. Mo Quan hated business the most, so she quickly got up to say goodbye to Qin Jue.
“I’ll excuse myself too,” Tang Yun followed suit.
“Secretary Tang, stay,” Qin Jue said.
Jian Zhen looked over at the mention. Tang Yun instantly became the center of attention. She didn’t know what expression to put on. Qin Jue spoke for her: “This is Tang Yun, Presidential Secretary. She will officially start in one week. Jian Zhen, you are responsible for mentoring her. You can have her follow the Xun Dao project.”
“Understood,” Jian Zhen was momentarily surprised, but she immediately composed herself, walked up to Tang Yun openly, and extended her right hand, “Hello, my name is Jian Zhen. We’ll be colleagues now. Please guide me.”
Tang Yun hesitantly shook Jian Zhen’s hand. Qin Jue’s arrangement for her induction seemed quite legitimate. Tang Yun felt like she was dreaming.
“What about this week?” Jian Zhen asked Qin Jue.
“You can start her induction training for Secretary Tang,” Qin Jue said.
Assistant Jian was very efficient. Soon after reporting her work to Qin Jue and leaving, Tang Yun received her employee number and the password to log into the company’s internal system, along with a compressed file named Induction Training.
Was she really going to become an employee of Changfeng Technology? Was Qin Jue’s positioning of her not as a mistress who occasionally played the role of a subordinate, but as an ordinary employee who was being extorted for sex?
Although neither was particularly great, Tang Yun inexplicably felt that the latter was slightly more respectable than the former.
Qin Jue was a difficult person to understand, but perhaps not entirely a scumbag.
Tang Yun hugged her phone, giggling foolishly at the chat window with Assistant Jian. Qin Jue saw it all. She planned to train Tang Yun well. If Tang Yun were to eventually team up with the as-yet-unseen childhood sweetheart to bring down her company, there were many ways to do it. Qin Jue hoped Tang Yun would remember her growth experience at Changfeng, try her best to preserve the original owner’s company structure and innocent employees, and target her alone.
But those were matters for the future. Qin Jue felt it was time to complete today’s KPI, so she skillfully threw a bucket of cold water on the situation.
“Do you have any personal belongings you need to pack up? I’ll have the driver take you back to your dorm. You won’t need to go back there anymore,” Qin Jue said.
The subtext was: Don’t forget who owns your nights.
The smile on Tang Yun’s face instantly disappeared. She nodded pitifully, instantly deflating like a frosted eggplant, making Qin Jue feel utterly wicked.
