- Chapter 12 - Starting the Job
The days in the hospital were uneventful to the point of being tedious. Besides Mo Quan showing up at Qin Jue’s ward every day, there were no other visitors. Although Qin Jue had told her driver to run errands for her at Mo Quan’s hotel, Mo Quan somehow hijacked that task halfway. She tirelessly showed up every day. Qin Jue pretended not to see who Mo Quan was running to the ward for every day.
Dr. Yu Mu was clearly not interested in her, so Mo Quan was bound to get nowhere, but she seemed to enjoy it.
Besides Mo Quan, the only one Qin Jue cared about was Tang Yun. She had originally thought that clocking in the daily mission of bullying the female lead would be easy, but trying to repeat the bathroom trick was met with Tang Yun’s firm opposition. Tang Yun would help the patient Qin Jue to the bathroom door, then flatly refuse to take another step, as if Qin Jue had done something awful to her last time.
Tang Yun stared at Qin Jue with a deep, slightly fierce look, which made Qin Jue feel a little uneasy. So, she decided to abandon that method. It seemed that even bullying people couldn’t rely on a single path.
The new destination was Qin Jue’s apartment. She was discharged, and finally, she could take her canary to see her cage.
On the way back to the apartment, Qin Jue and Tang Yun sat side-by-side in the back seat. Although the space inside Qin Jue’s car was wide open, Tang Yun acted as if an invisible elephant was sitting between them. She was pressed tightly against her side door, staring straight ahead at the street view outside the window, as if she were seeing the world for the first time in her life.
Qin Jue found this amusing. From what she knew of the System, in the original plot, a sharp turn would be arranged at this moment, throwing Tang Yun into her arms, and then they could naturally proceed with some System-pleasing activities.
Screech—
A small dog suddenly darted across the road ahead. The driver, Old Zhao, sharply turned the steering wheel to avoid it. Tang Yun was thrown across the seat, landing squarely on the innocent Qin Jue.
Qin Jue: “…”
Tang Yun stiffened all over, cautiously looking up at Qin Jue. Qin Jue closed her eyes, experiencing the concept of the “World’s Will” once again.
Had she skipped the daily mission for too long?
Tang Yun braced herself on the seat, trying to get up. Qin Jue felt Tang Yun’s prickly breath near her neck. A very clean, soapy scent seemed to linger around her nose. She raised her hand and pressed down on Tang Yun’s waist, resting her chin on Tang Yun’s shoulder, and took a deep breath.
Hmm, is that perverted enough?
“Don’t rush,” Qin Jue said softly.
“I… I’m not,” Tang Yun’s face flushed.
Qin Jue curved her lips into a faint smile. She was speaking to the so-called World’s Will: she would do what needed to be done; there was no need to rush to create opportunities for her. However, the words had a different meaning in Tang Yun’s ears, and Qin Jue was happy to let her believe it.
For the rest of the ride, Tang Yun was forced to maintain that awkward posture. Qin Jue didn’t release her hand, so she couldn’t get up, and she didn’t dare to actually rest in Qin Jue’s arms. She could only use one hand to support her upper body. By the time they finally reached the apartment, she felt her hand was numb.
Qin Jue’s apartment was in an extremely expensive building in the city center—a top-floor penthouse with a garden, overlooking the entire city. It perfectly matched the original owner’s arrogant personality. Tang Yun followed Qin Jue into the elevator with her backpack. After a drip sound from the fingerprint lock, the door opened, and Tang Yun didn’t even dare to step inside.
“How long are you going to stand outside?” Qin Jue asked, turning back.
Tang Yun quickly followed her in, then looked around in confusion.
“CEO Qin… Where… where do I stay?” Tang Yun asked.
Qin Jue smiled warmly: “Where do you want to stay? The master bedroom?”
Tang Yun quickly shook her head. “No, no. I can sleep on the sofa. If you need anything… just call me.”
Qin Jue was amused by Tang Yun’s apprehension. Of course, she wouldn’t let Tang Yun sleep in her bed; she wasn’t used to sharing a bed with anyone. But she wouldn’t make the kid sleep on the sofa either.
“There are guest rooms in the house. Pick one and move in,” Qin Jue said.
She casually gestured in a direction, then looked at Tang Yun, who clearly didn’t understand the basic layout principles of the apartment, as Tang Yun pushed open the door to the secondary bedroom, which was right next to the master bedroom.
It’s like she’s doing it on purpose, Qin Jue couldn’t help but think.
But there was no way Tang Yun was doing it on purpose. Qin Jue was quite certain of the female lead’s character setting. If it weren’t for Qin Jue’s contract forcing her to stay, she would have fled long ago.
As soon as Tang Yun put down her few pitiful pieces of luggage, she was sent by Qin Jue to pour tea, serve water, and cut fruit. Qin Jue’s discharge instructions still emphasized the need for rest and avoiding fatigue, as if she were some fragile porcelain doll.
Tang Yun opened Qin Jue’s refrigerator and was unexpectedly greeted by rows upon rows of colorful alcohol. Besides the alcohol, there wasn’t a single sign of fruit.
Life of drinking and debauchery. Who else would get a heart disease but her?
After grumbling silently, Tang Yun still had to politely ask Qin Jue, “There’s no fruit in the refrigerator. Should I buy some?”
In the living room, Qin Jue was grimacing as she took her medicine. She had hated taking medicine since childhood and barely heard what Tang Yun said, so she just nodded vaguely in agreement.
Tang Yun placed an order on her phone. Half an hour later, a runner delivered the goods to the door. Qin Jue stared, dumbfounded, as Tang Yun received three large bags of groceries, filling her rarely-used kitchen to the brim.
Didn’t she say she was just buying fruit? Why does it look like she’s preparing to settle down and live here?
“You know how to cook?” Qin Jue asked.
“Yes,” Tang Yun answered with certainty.
This greatly surprised Qin Jue. The only thing she and the original owner had in common was probably that they didn’t cook at home. When they didn’t have business dinners, they would just have the secretary buy something for a quick bite. Even Secretary Zhou, who traveled everywhere with her, was a top-tier professional who was great in the boardroom but considered cooking a fantasy. Having someone cook at home was a memory Qin Jue could trace back to when her mother was still around.
“Then you can cook from now on when we’re at home,” Qin Jue said, full of hope.
Tang Yun agreed and busied herself in the kitchen. Qin Jue sat waiting at the dining table. After watching the clock on the wall tick for what seemed like ages, the clanging in the kitchen finally stopped. Chef Tang, who had been busy for two hours, presented two bowls of plain noodle soup.
Qin Jue: “?”
“You took two hours,” Qin Jue reminded her.
“Is there a problem?” Tang Yun asked self-righteously. “I even added a poached egg for you.”
Qin Jue: “…”
All her hopes were dashed. These two bowls of noodles seemed to mock her absurd imagination.
Qin Jue took a bite. Tang Yun hadn’t picked up her chopsticks, seemingly waiting for her review.
“It’s mediocre. Let’s eat out from now on,” Qin Jue said.
Tang Yun: “Oh.”
Tang Yun began to eat her noodles. Halfway through, she suddenly looked up and said to Qin Jue, “I can learn.”
“But I didn’t hire you to learn how to cook, and why should I wait for you to learn when I can easily hire someone who already knows how?” Qin Jue said.
That line of reasoning rolled off her tongue easily. She had used the same words when dismissing those relatives that the elders had forced into the company. One after another, they all claimed they could learn. She was running a company, not a school.
Remembering the past, Qin Jue couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile. Tang Yun stared at Qin Jue’s smile and was suddenly lost in thought.
Tang Yun realized that why did Qin Jue choose her specifically? She didn’t know how to flatter people, couldn’t cook well, and had no work experience.
“Get some rest early tonight. You start work officially tomorrow,” Qin Jue instructed.
Qin Jue finished that bowl of noodles after all. She didn’t make things difficult for Tang Yun, nor did she make any crude demands on Tang Yun under the cover of night. Tang Yun lay in the bed next to Qin Jue’s, drifting off to sleep with a head full of jumbled thoughts.
Early the next morning, Tang Yun woke up before her alarm clock. Outside the window, the morning light was dim. She stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window on the top floor, watching the entire city slowly wake up.
It was an entirely new experience. This was the first time she had observed the city from such a commanding height. In the eyes of people who lived in this kind of apartment, her original life was probably as insignificant as an ant, right?
No, they wouldn’t even see her. If it weren’t for Qin Jue, half-drunk, barging into Tang Yun’s convenience store shift late that night to buy water, they would never have crossed paths.
Tang Yun composed herself and tidied up. The toiletries in Qin Jue’s guest room must have been some expensive brand, as they left a faint floral scent in her hair. Tang Yun liked it very much.
She fried eggs and bacon in the kitchen, making a visually decent sandwich for Qin Jue. Working at a convenience store had one advantage: Tang Yun was proficient in heating up pre-packaged food.
When Qin Jue walked out of the bedroom, Tang Yun was already sitting at the table eating her sandwich. Qin Jue’s portion was neatly placed on a plate, with a cup of hot milk beside it.
No coffee.
“Thank you,” Qin Jue sat down.
It seemed Tang Yun had a vendetta against caffeine. A cup of coffee in her own home seemed to have become a luxury for CEO Qin, Qin Jue mused internally, but maintained her sophisticated, professional demeanor on the surface.
It doesn’t matter. There’s plenty of time.
After breakfast, the driver was already waiting downstairs. Qin Jue and Tang Yun got into the car together. The company wasn’t far, and they were almost there in the blink of an eye.
“Can I… get off at this intersection?” Tang Yun asked.
“Afraid of people gossiping?” Qin Jue asked with a smile.
Tang Yun remained silent.
“I personally put you in the company. Finance and HR broke the rules to draft your contract. I had Jian Zhen contact you before you even started, and you completed all the onboarding procedures within a few hours of meeting her. Now you want to get off early to try and avoid suspicion? Do you think you can?” Qin Jue asked.
“Just focus on your work. Don’t worry about unnecessary things,” Qin Jue curved her lips.
The car stopped steadily at the main entrance of Changfeng Technology. Tang Yun got out and followed Qin Jue. In the stretch of road from the main gate to the elevator, Tang Yun felt like she was under the gaze of thousands of people. Being the center of attention was unpleasant, especially since she could already guess how she would become the subject of her colleagues’ after-hours gossip.
Tang Yun gripped her backpack straps, trying her best to look as if she belonged there, just like Qin Jue.
The secretary’s office was on the same floor as Qin Jue’s. After Qin Jue dropped her off with Jian Zhen, she didn’t bother with her anymore. Tang Yun followed Assistant Jian to her workstation and quickly realized that her student-like clothing made her look particularly out of place among her colleagues.
“Xiao Tang, is it okay if I call you that?” Assistant Jian asked.
“Yes, yes, that’s perfectly fine,” Tang Yun answered nervously.
“As you can see, the nature of our work often requires us to accompany CEO Qin to business occasions, so there are certain dress code requirements. Please pay attention to that,” Assistant Jian said.
“Understood,” Tang Yun nodded.
Tang Yun quietly noted Jian Zhen’s entire outfit: a beige blazer with a pencil skirt and high heels. She needed to buy a similar set when she went back, but she wondered how much it would cost?
“The preliminary materials for the Xun Dao project have all been sent to you. I believe you have some initial thoughts. Next, you will accompany me to the project team’s regular meeting. CEO Qin’s intention is for you to be temporarily assigned to the project team to observe and learn. The project head is Vice President Guan,” Assistant Jian explained.
She spoke quickly. Tang Yun could only nod repeatedly to keep up with her pace.
“The work of the Secretary team still needs to be managed. If the opportunity arises, you may need to travel with CEO Qin. Any questions?” Jian Zhen asked.
Tang Yun quickly shook her head.
Jian Zhen looked at Tang Yun’s face, which was full of clear-eyed naivety, and sighed internally, realizing that this young girl didn’t know the huge workload Qin Jue had piled onto her. She looked at Tang Yun with pity.
“You just started, and there might be many things you don’t understand. If you have any questions, communicate with me immediately, especially concerning Vice President Guan’s affairs. Always be mindful of the situation,” Jian Zhen patted Tang Yun on the shoulder.
Good luck.
