- Chapter 19 - Red Wine and Plain Noodles
“CEO… CEO Qin,” Tang Yun’s brain crashed.
Qin Jue should be spending a passionate night with that sweet little Omega right now. Why would she suddenly call her? What did the call mean? Did she not “handle it” properly?
Or, was this bastard Qin Jue going to make her join in??
Tang Yun took a deep breath, using all her strength to calm down, and forced out the question: “Is something wrong?”
Qin Jue: “Come here.”
Tang Yun: “…”
Tang Yun slowly hung up the phone, her mind blank. So, Qin Jue was truly a pervert, wasn’t she?
Tang Yun’s room was right next to Qin Jue’s. Walking out, turning, and knocking—a few short steps, yet Tang Yun felt she had walked for a century.
Knock—Knock—
Qin Jue opened the door, impeccably dressed.
Tang Yun tilted her head to look behind Qin Jue. It was a similar hotel room layout. There was no third person, and there was no suspicious pheromone scent in the air.
“What are you looking at? Or rather, who are you hoping to see?” Qin Jue asked.
Tang Yun finally understood. She seemed to have… misunderstood Qin Jue?
But Tang Yun still couldn’t fully relax. She tentatively asked: “Did the person leave?”
Qin Jue simply pulled Tang Yun through the doorway and stood her in the center of the room so she could see clearly.
“Who are you looking for?” Qin Jue asked.
Tang Yun lowered her head in shame.
Qin Jue clicked her tongue in amazement.
“I’ve certainly hired a great secretary,” Qin Jue let out a small laugh.
The bottle of red wine Tang Yun had ordered was already decanted. two stemmed glasses were placed side-by-side near Qin Jue. Qin Jue handed one glass to Tang Yun, holding the other herself, swirling it and appreciating it against the light overhead.
Qin Jue knew Tang Yun was not the easy-to-use Secretary Zhou she was used to, but she hadn’t expected Tang Yun to show no understanding whatsoever for such an obvious request.
At the banquet, Fang Zhilei probably realized that he wanted to reconcile with Qin Jue and band together to survive the coming industry winter. But not knowing how to show goodwill, he resorted to this gesture, which he thought would please Qin Jue, resulting in a comical scene for her.
The Omega, who was emitting a cloyingly sweet, fruity pheromone, had attached herself to Qin Jue, claiming to be CEO Fang’s cousin. She said she was an old fan of Xun Dao and was curious about Changfeng Technology, which created it, wanting to have an in-depth conversation with Qin Jue. The so-called cousin didn’t talk properly, constantly leaning in. With the title of CEO Fang’s cousin, she was actively throwing herself at Qin Jue, making it difficult for Qin Jue to give a cold refusal. So, Qin Jue sent a message to Tang Yun, asking her to find a way to help Qin Jue escape.
Tang Yun could have said there was an urgent company matter or someone was looking for her, interrupting the conversation so Qin Jue could politely bid the Omega farewell. The result? Secretary Tang left on her own, abandoning CEO Qin in front of a dubious Omega, forcing Qin Jue to use a great deal of words to return to her room intact.
Opening the door, she saw the suggestive red wine glasses.
“In your eyes, I’m completely indiscriminate, pulling anyone into bed, is that it?” Qin Jue couldn’t help but ask Tang Yun.
Tang Yun knew she was in the wrong and lowered her head, remaining silent.
Qin Jue didn’t understand what Tang Yun thought about all day. It seemed Tang Yun could always interpret Qin Jue’s normal actions as something R-rated. Qin Jue was quite irritated by Tang Yun, which was why she specifically called her over to be lectured.
Tang Yun held the wine Qin Jue handed her, silent. She really wanted to ask what Qin Jue’s standards for a partner were and why she chose her, but she could clearly see that asking would likely make Qin Jue even angrier.
After a long pause, Tang Yun spoke: “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.”
All the frustration Qin Jue felt was dissipated by Tang Yun’s apology, but the volume the anger had occupied couldn’t shrink back. It felt both sore and empty, yet there was no appropriate excuse to vent it. Tang Yun’s decision not to argue and simply apologize left Qin Jue at a loss. She turned and sat down on the sofa, genuinely wondering: “Are you afraid of me?”
Although their initial acquaintance was unpleasant, after this period of interaction, Qin Jue felt she wasn’t a complete monster. Aside from occasionally provoking Tang Yun, she hadn’t done anything truly outrageous to her, had she?
Tang Yun shook her head, then nodded. She truly didn’t know. Qin Jue was shrouded in an incomprehensible mist in her eyes. Her words and actions were often inconsistent, her demeanor and methods contradictory. Tang Yun didn’t know how other benefactors and their kept persons interacted, but her CEO Qin made Tang Yun feel distant and difficult to please.
The night was hazy. Under the hotel room lights, both people were struggling against the fog in front of them. The night, which should have been romantic, lacked any hint of ambiguity. Even Tang Yun believed that Qin Jue definitely wouldn’t do anything to her tonight.
“Are you…” Qin Jue broke the silence first, “Are you hungry?”
Tang Yun: “…A little.”
She hadn’t eaten anything substantial all day. It seemed that eating heartily on such occasions was synonymous with being unprofessional. These successful people all looked like they were about to ascend to heaven, never touching earthly food.
Tang Yun initially thought her hunger was her own problem, but she didn’t expect Qin Jue felt the same way.
“Go call the front desk and order two bowls of noodles,” Qin Jue said.
So, for the second time tonight, Tang Yun called room service. One time for red wine, and one time for plain noodles.
The two bowls of noodles arrived. The broth was clear as water but extremely flavorful. Inside were two stalks of bright green bok choy, topped with a runny-yolk poached egg that burst with a poke. It was infinitely better than Tang Yun’s cooking.
Qin Jue sat across from Tang Yun eating noodles. She lifted a small bundle of thin noodles with her chopsticks, blew off the steam, and chewed slowly. At this moment, CEO Qin looked incredibly genuine and approachable, as if she and Tang Yun were essentially the same kind of person.
“Tomorrow morning, a few companies will meet at the coffee shop for a brief exchange. Lewis might clarify their requirements further. You follow along and take notes,” Qin Jue instructed while eating. She was discussing a major issue concerning Changfeng’s next phase of prosperity, but her tone sounded as if she were commenting on whether the noodle broth was flavorful enough.
“The schedule is light. We’ll head back early.”
“Oh right, aren’t you reporting on Monday?” Qin Jue asked.
“Yes. Several small groups in the project department will report their progress. I did some work, and Lin… my team leader wants me to present it,” Tang Yun said with a hint of pride.
Qin Jue looked at Tang Yun seriously, pausing a little longer than usual, but finally just wiped her mouth and said, “Then perform well.”
A bowl of steaming plain noodles soothed the stomach. Tang Yun quickly tidied up and called for the dishes to be removed. The full Qin Jue sat under the warming spotlight, looking exceptionally gentle and unthreatening. She stared at Tang Yun after she finished tidying and suddenly spoke, “You can make a request to me in appropriate circumstances. I will consider fulfilling it.”
No kept person was as dutiful and undemanding as she was, working and doing overtime every day, asking for nothing. Being too noble was not good. She should read Das Kapital and learn how to use the contract to exploit her benefactor’s surplus value.
“Huh?” Tang Yun was taken aback. Clearly, Qin Jue’s words were once again outside her realm of understanding.
“Right now, then. Ask me for a gift,” Qin Jue said.
She smiled faintly, filled with curiosity about Tang Yun’s request. Honestly, she really couldn’t tell what Tang Yun liked.
Qin Jue was prepared for Tang Yun to deliberate for a long time, but unexpectedly, Tang Yun seemed to have a flash of inspiration quickly.
“Then… I bought a few pieces of clothing. Could you reimburse me?” Tang Yun asked.
Qin Jue: “?”
“Well, Assistant Jian said my attire wasn’t professional enough when I first joined, so I took some time to buy a few more professional suits… It’s mainly for work needs, otherwise I wouldn’t spend money carelessly…” Tang Yun seemed to take Qin Jue’s hesitation as disapproval and began to explain in a fluster.
“Clothes? When did you buy them?” Qin Jue asked.
“They’re on the way. They should arrive soon. I bought them online,” Tang Yun said.
Honestly, every one of these answers was beyond Qin Jue’s expectation. Since when did anyone around her buy clothes online?
“So, can they be reimbursed?” Tang Yun asked.
Qin Jue: “…Yes. How much did it cost?”
Tang Yun tapped on her phone, pulling up the payment record for Qin Jue to see. Qin Jue frowned, scrolling from beginning to end, unable to understand why all those items totaled less than four figures. What was even more confusing was how Tang Yun managed to choose those few ugly items?
A WeChat transfer of ten thousand yuan. Qin Jue thoughtfully rounded up the amount for Tang Yun.
Tang Yun looked up in surprise after seeing the zeros, gaining a new perspective on the capitalist Qin Jue’s generosity.
Tsk, such an unworldly appearance. Anyone would think Qin Jue had withheld the agreed-upon upkeep money from the original owner. Qin Jue felt a headache coming on. She waved her hand, telling Tang Yun to return to her room to rest. She leaned back on the sofa cushion, gazing wistfully at the ceiling.
System: “Trying to curry favor for no reason, giving money to the female lead out of the blue. How do you explain that now?”
Qin Jue: “No explanation. I really didn’t bully her this time.”
The System was silent for a moment, then spoke in a strange tone, slowly saying: “Host, I think I understand what you were waiting for. So, is this a form of pre-compensation?”
“I suppose so. To keep my conscience clear,” Qin Jue answered honestly.
“You really are… a strange host,” the System commented.
