Why Not (Lily ABO) - Chapter 4
Saturday afternoon, Shi Jing drove to A University to pick up Fu Shuyun. Inside the car, the constantly running air conditioning contrasted sharply with the sticky air outside.
Shi Jing was now feeling a bit worried. After Shi Xu told her he couldn’t go because of a school arrangement over the weekend, she hadn’t informed Fu Shuyun. After setting the time with Fu Shuyun, she told Shi Xu the date was Saturday, only to receive his school notice 10 minutes later. She then opened WeChat and reserved seats for two.
Now that she was at the school gate, she realized she had forgotten to tell Fu Shuyun about it. Their communication was so natural that Shi Jing almost forgot that Fu Shuyun was Shi Xu’s classmate and that they had met because of him. Forget it, I’ll wait until I pick up Fu Shuyun to talk about it.
She parked the car in the parking lot and strolled around the university area. The appointed time hadn’t arrived yet; she seemed to be a little early.
“Sister!”
Hearing the voice, Shi Jing looked toward the source. It was the same single ponytail, the same pure white T-shirt, but today she wore a dark pleated skirt. Hmm, very youthful, vibrant, and girly. Then she noticed there was another person next to her. She was just thinking she might need to add another seat when she heard Fu Shuyun speak.
“This is my roommate. She came out to buy something, so we came out together on the way.”
“Hello.”
“Hello, Sister. I’ll go buy my things now. Bye~”
China’s Good Best Friend, Yun Yan, really just greeted her and left, which deeply touched Fu Shuyun. After seeing Yun Yan off, she looked at Shi Jing. Unlike the serious and rigid work clothes she wore, Shi Jing in casual attire was also full of charm; every expression conveyed maturity and sophistication. Sister is so beautiful!
“Shu Yun, Shi Xu said his department has a collective study outing this weekend, so it’s just the two of us. Is that okay?”
Fu Shuyun knew, of course; she set the date for today because she knew. Shi Xu had personally presented her with the opportunity for a solo date with her sister, so how could she not seize it? She gave a broad smile and confidently pulled Shi Jing toward the parking lot.
“It’s fine! He can be busy with his own things. We’ll just go eat. I’ll send him pictures later, as if he ate with us.”
The car smoothly drove towards the World Trade Center. Shi Jing had only visited this Japanese restaurant once, when the owner invited her to try it during its opening. Her job required her to travel periodically, and she had visited almost all Southeast Asian countries, especially Japan. The owner naturally knew this well, which is why he arranged the menu. Zhang Huming, before opening the Japanese restaurant, was Shi Jing’s direct supervisor. The last thing he did in his role was promote Shi Jing to Project Manager. He resigned from his director position and opened a Japanese restaurant in the blink of an eye.
At the time, Shi Jing was very confused. He had worked for eight years to finally become a director, a position countless people desired, and he gave it up so easily. Shi Jing initially refused the opening invitation but reluctantly went. When she saw the significantly thinner Zhang Huming, she suddenly understood. The social demands of his job had steadily deteriorated Zhang Huming’s health. Long-term late nights and overtime led to an unstable mental state. After choosing a career he was passionate about, he looked mentally refreshed and physically healthier.
Leading Fu Shuyun into the restaurant, it was 6:30 PM—peak dinner time. The place was already quite full. She spotted Zhang Huming immediately upon entering.
“Manager Zhang, long time no see.”
“Welcome, welcome! I saved a private room for you two. Follow me.”
“Xiao Shi, just call me Brother Ming. I’m not your boss anymore.”
He led the two to the private room. The environment was undeniably good, and the room was spacious. Meeting by chance despite the distance, a distinguished guest had arrived. Zhang Huming, as the owner, personally came to greet them.
“Does this little one have any dietary restrictions?”
This was the first time Zhang Huming had seen Shi Jing so close to an Omega, let alone bringing her alone to his restaurant. Naturally, he was more enthusiastic. Shi Jing wasn’t a picky eater; she only had favorites, not dislikes. So, the preferences of the younger guest were important.
“Cooked food is fine. For raw fish, as long as it’s not too fishy, I can eat it. Thank you, Brother Ming!”
“Hahaha, great! Wait a moment; I’ll go arrange it.”
Before long, the table was filled with sashimi: salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp, Arctic surf clam… A quick glance showed that more than half was raw. There were even raw oysters—can you actually eat those raw? Just as she was thinking about where to start, she reached for the soy sauce, but someone beat her to it. She looked down and saw Shi Jing had already placed the prepared soy sauce in front of her.
“These oysters are delicious. Want to try one?”
Saying this, she squeezed lemon juice onto an oyster, then picked it up with her chopsticks and dipped it in the sauce. She couldn’t ignore the curious gaze Fu Shuyun gave her from across the table. After a slight hesitation, she placed the sauce-dipped oyster into the other’s bowl, but unexpectedly, Fu Shuyun took it directly with her mouth just as Shi Jing was about to put it down.
Fu Shuyun was completely drawn in by Shi Jing’s hand—long, slender, and fair. Her mind was filled with nothing but how beautiful it was and the urge to lick it. Seeing Shi Jing extend the chopsticks, she subconsciously opened her mouth to accept. The moment it entered her mouth, she tasted the acidity of the lemon and the sauce first. When she bit into the oyster, a rush of sweet freshness flooded her mouth. Sister didn’t lie to me; it really is delicious.
Shi Jing was internally questioning herself at this sight. Is this how kids are these days? Over the past week, their sporadic chatting consisted of nothing more than casual daily exchanges. She replied when she saw the messages, and they probably hadn’t spoken more words than she would in a single meeting. Why did interacting with her now feel so natural and not uncomfortable?
She suddenly remembered that year when Shi Xu was born, when she was 8. She cried tearfully in her mother’s arms. Her parents thought Shi Jing was happy to be an older sister, but she wasn’t. Didn’t you say you were going to give me a little sister? Why is it a brother?
So that’s it. She realized she had started treating Fu Shuyun like a little sister. It was true that she preferred Fu Shuyun over Shi Xu. Shi Xu was too naughty when he was young, and no one could control him except Shi Jing. This was why, after Shi Xu was admitted to A University, her parents specifically told her to “take good care” of him, and she even set aside a room for him to stay. In Shi Jing’s view, that room was more like a storage room; he barely slept there, but it accumulated a lot of stuff. During breaks, he always went back home, and during the school semester, he mostly stayed in the dorm.
No longer confused about their interaction style, Shi Jing chatted with Fu Shuyun on various topics, learning that her major was chosen by her family, her usual hobbies, and that she was obsessed with hot pot. This little one is really cute.
“Is it good? These are all fresh seafood delivered this afternoon.”
“Oh, right, Xiao Shi, are you free next month? I’m planning to add Japanese hot pot to the menu. Would you come and test it out for me first?”
Zhang Huming came in with a bottle of sake. He knew Shi Jing liked to collect wine and planned to give it to her as a gift, while also inviting her to try the new dish. Anything Shi Jing deemed delicious wouldn’t be bad.
“Tell me the time next month. You don’t mind if I bring one more person, do you?”
Fu Shuyun, who heard “hot pot” and then Shi Jing mentioning bringing one more person, instantly brightened up. She had just told her sister how much she loved hot pot, and her sister immediately took note of it and said she would bring her. Even though Shi Jing hadn’t explicitly invited her yet, she automatically assumed she was the “one more person” Shi Jing spoke of.
“Haha, of course I don’t mind. Don’t just say one person; I welcome ten people.”
Good times always fly by quickly. After dinner, it was already past 8 PM, and the streets were lively. Since it was still early, Shi Jing suggested they take a walk to aid digestion. Fu Shuyun, eager to spend more time with her, was naturally delighted. The school curfew was 10 PM, and no one was allowed in or out of the gate after that. If she could stall until after 10 PM, she could spend the night with her sister, even if nothing happened in the end.
Of course, she didn’t share this little thought with Shi Jing. Shi Jing would surely send her back to school on time if she knew. Although she wasn’t sure if Shi Xu had ever mentioned the curfew to her sister, she certainly wouldn’t bring it up herself. The two were strolling on the pedestrian street, about to order a bubble tea, when a sudden phone ring broke the pleasant atmosphere. Fu Shuyun was about to get annoyed, but seeing the call was from her Mom, she reluctantly answered.
Her Mom asked if she had any plans for the upcoming National Day holiday and if she wanted to travel together. Fu Shuyun quickly hung up after replying that she would check later, leaving her Mom on the other end confused. Her daughter never hung up on her so quickly. Should I book her ticket and hotel or not?
“I ordered the signature drink you recommended. One cup is sugar-free, and one is the recommended sweetness level. Which one do you want?”
After hanging up, she saw Shi Jing walking towards her, having already ordered the drinks. The beverages were cold, and a layer of condensation formed on the cups. Shi Jing was holding them, and the moisture met the heat, forming droplets that dripped down Shi Jing’s fair palm onto the floor. Fu Shuyun snapped out of her thoughts, took the cup with the recommended sweetness, and took out a tissue from her bag to wipe Shi Jing’s hand.
“Sister, why didn’t you get a bag? Your hands must be freezing! Don’t move; let me wipe them for you.”
Her hand was indeed cold. Fu Shuyun meticulously wiped it with the tissue, not even missing the gaps between her fingers. Hmm… Sister’s hand is bigger than mine. Holding it must feel very secure. Putting away the tissue, the two walked slowly along the pedestrian street. Fu Shuyun shared fun anecdotes from school, while Shi Jing listened quietly, occasionally replying with a sentence or two. Her phone rang again. Shi Jing took Fu Shuyun’s drink and told her to answer the call.
It was Yun Yan. Fu Shuyun glanced at the time: 9:30 PM. Driving back to school from here would take about half an hour, and walking from their current location to the parking lot would take more than ten minutes. Everything was planned perfectly. Fu Shuyun felt grateful to Yun Yan and planned to treat her to hot pot next week. She picked up the call.
“Yunyun, it’s 9:30 PM! Are you back yet? Can you bring me a bubble tea?”
Yun Yan had waited all evening for Fu Shuyun to return. She didn’t want to disturb her best friend on a date, but with the school curfew approaching, she decided to call. If Fu Shuyun wasn’t coming back, she could at least buy something herself and ease her worry.
“Sister…”
“Hmm? Do we need to head back? Let’s walk back now.”
Saying this, Shi Jing started walking towards the parking lot. She turned back to find Fu Shuyun hadn’t reacted. Just as she was about to take her hand, Fu Shuyun spoke.
“The school curfew is 10 PM. Are we going to be late?”
“I’m sorry. I was just having too much fun and completely forgot about it…”
Author’s Note:
I haven’t actually eaten raw oysters myself.
But my sister loves them, especially.
