Why Not (Lily ABO) - Chapter 6
Shi Jing was getting a massive headache looking at the company’s National Day business trip schedule in her email. As an office worker, the National Day holiday was the longest break, apart from the Lunar New Year. Her plan to take her family on a road trip this year was clearly ruined. Well, double overtime pay and travel subsidies… forget it, making money is more important. Then, a bigger problem emerged: the trip was scheduled for four days, and Shi Xu usually returned home for National Day. What about Wan Yuan? The endless exposure of pet deaths in boarding facilities made Shi Jing highly resistant to using them.
In the past, her business trips were only one or two days, so she didn’t worry too much. But four days for National Day? Damned capitalism.
“Good morning, Sister!”
As Fu Shuyun walked out into the living room, she saw Shi Jing staring sternly at her phone, her beautiful eyebrows furrowed, indicating some kind of trouble. Wan Yuan, conversely, was sprawled on the coffee table watching TV. Shi Jing alone was attractive enough for Fu Shuyun, but the addition of a cat made it even better.
“Good morning. Come have breakfast.”
It was simple preserved egg and lean pork congee, with milk placed next to it. Shi Jing hadn’t drunk milk since middle school because her mother forced her to drink at least two boxes a day due to malnutrition until her mother saw she was healthy and well-developed. She had simply drunk too much. Now, the sight of milk made her feel sick. Just as she was thinking about how to politely refuse, she heard Shi Jing speak gently.
“Goat milk, coffee, or juice? Which one do you prefer?”
Shi Jing got up and poured a small bowl of goat milk for Wan Yuan. Wan Yuan, who had been focused on the TV, instantly appeared in front of its bowl and began to seriously enjoy its breakfast. The rule that cats are lactose intolerant and shouldn’t drink cow’s milk is practically mandatory knowledge for all novice cat owners. Fu Shuyun, who had never tried goat milk, had an impulse to try what the little cat loved, but ultimately shook her head.
Pouring a cup of juice, the pleasant breakfast time passed. Fu Shuyun volunteered to wash the dishes. After all, she had “stayed for free” for a night, and it didn’t feel right to do nothing.
When Fu Shuyun finished tidying up, she saw Shi Jing heading toward the balcony with a load of clothes. She immediately thought of the bathrobe that had been soaked with her love fluid. Aah, so embarrassing! She called out to Shi Jing, saying that the sheets she slept on and the used bath towel also needed washing. She threw them into the washing machine together, including that bathrobe.
“That movie we didn’t get to watch yesterday is now available online.”
With everything settled, the two sat on the sofa in the living room. Before Fu Shuyun could reply, Shi Jing had already picked up the remote control and started looking for the movie. Shi Jing wasn’t sure when she should send her back to school; if she brought it up, it might seem unwelcoming, like she was kicking her out. It just so happened that she needed to go out in the afternoon, so she could drop her off on the way. The timing was perfect, too; they could grab lunch afterward.
In the passenger seat, Fu Shuyun sent a message to Yun Yan; she hadn’t brought her dorm key and needed to confirm Yun Yan was there. Shi Jing’s home was not far from the school, about a 20-minute drive. Something suddenly occurred to her, and she turned to the focused driver, Shi Jing.
“If you have time, can I still come over to your place?”
“My mom is allergic to cat dander, so I can’t keep a cat, but I really love them. Wan Yuan is so well-behaved; she doesn’t even hide when I take pictures.”
While she privately wanted more time with Shi Jing, her love for cats was genuine. Especially a cat that lets you rub its belly and doesn’t hide when you take pictures—that’s true happiness, being with the person she liked and a cat.
“Sure. If you want to pet the cat, I’ll message you, and I’ll come pick you up.”
Shi Jing was beautiful and very considerate, but Fu Shuyun wondered if she treated everyone this way. Although being friendly wasn’t a bad thing, she still hoped to be the most special person to her—that unique possessiveness one feels for the person they love.
Upon arriving at school, the two said goodbye. Fu Shuyun returned to the dorm, and Shi Jing drove to a teahouse to meet a friend. Che Xiyao was Shi Jing’s classmate in middle school, high school, and university—she was practically a half-childhood friend. She was also one of the few people Shi Jing had a good relationship with. The two met at the teahouse to chat and taste tea. This time, Che Xiyao had specifically arranged to meet with Shi Jing to talk things through while his wife was on a business trip.
His wife was a Beta. She didn’t have a heat cycle, couldn’t smell pheromones, and couldn’t be marked. However, their relationship had always been good and stable. They had been married for three years, and during the honeymoon phase, Che Xiyao had proactively undergone a vasectomy because he feared she might get pregnant. Now, relentless pressure from their families had led to differing opinions on having children. He wanted a few more years of couple time, but his wife suspected he was cheating.
“I’d think the same thing if I were her.”
“It’s normal to have friction when two people are together. You are legal partners; you should discuss this properly, not hide and work overtime at the company.”
Che Xiyao knew this, of course. He had secretly undergone a reversal surgery, planning to surprise his wife when she returned. But the WeChat messages he sent sank without a trace. She was still posting to her Moments as usual, just ignoring him. Now he understood how his wife felt when she was alone at home.
“Sister Shi Jing, save me! How do I win her back?”
“Book a flight to go find her now. Nothing a good session in bed can’t solve.”
That’s very Alpha…
He finally decided to grovel again, but this time not to propose, but to apologize. He would open his heart, tell her everything, and then decide on the matter of children together. Having made up his mind, Che Xiyao immediately booked the next flight to see his wife, promising to treat Shi Jing to dinner when he returned. Shi Jing wasn’t in a hurry to leave and sat leisurely drinking tea.
She suddenly found it quite amusing: a married person asking a single person how to placate his wife, and one person was bold enough to ask, while the other was bold enough to listen.
Her friends were all getting married and having babies, yet she didn’t even know what sex felt like, only using her hands or Alpha toys. A sense of frustration welled up. Maybe it’s time for me to find a girlfriend. After so many years, she had matured a lot; she probably wouldn’t get so easily jealous anymore… Probably.
Two months later, after getting together with Fu Shuyun, Shi Jing realized that after years of settling, the vinegar in her jar was even more sour!
Life continued uneventfully. Shi Jing was busy with work, and Fu Shuyun was busy with classes every day. After that day, their relationship grew better, and they chatted more frequently. Fu Shuyun always shared interesting things with Shi Jing immediately. At first, her friends were very curious. Shi Xu, in particular, always ate hot pot without touching his phone and never had the habit of taking pictures, but now he was constantly staring at his phone and frequently taking photos. After two or three meals, they got used to it and even joked, asking Fu Shuyun to bring the person along to meet them.
Shi Xu, witnessing all this, felt very uneasy but couldn’t guess that the love rival was his own sister, Shi Jing. He didn’t care that many people liked Fu Shuyun, but now Fu Shuyun liked someone, and the situation was completely different. Since she still had time to eat with them every day, it proved that, at least for now, she was single, and he still had a chance.
Today was the day Fu Shuyun and Shi Jing had arranged for her to come over and pet the cat. She only had two classes in the afternoon, so she made a quick trip to the nearby supermarket to buy groceries and waited at the school gate for Shi Jing to pick her up.
Seeing Shi Jing’s car pull up, she was about to open the door when she saw Shi Jing step out of the car, walk over, take the groceries she was holding, open the car door for her, and then put all the items in the trunk. Fastening her seatbelt, Fu Shuyun noticed that the passenger seat was set to the position she had adjusted last time; even the angle of the seatback was in the most comfortable position.
This little discovery elevated her mood even further. Either Sister remembered her preferred seat settings, or no one had sat in the passenger seat since then. Of course, she chose to believe the latter.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. There was some traffic. I brought you bubble tea.”
The moment she spoke, a cup of bubble tea appeared in her hand. It was from a new, trendy online shop she had shared just yesterday. Today, her sister brought the bubble tea to pick her up.
“I saw your share yesterday, so I brought you a cup when the company ordered afternoon tea today.”
“It’s actually pretty good. We can try other flavors at the store next time.”
They had known each other for almost a month, and this was the first time she had heard Shi Jing speak so many words in one breath, simply because she was already at the school gate when Shi Jing arrived. Sister is so cute!
“Thank you, Sister. You’re so kind! To repay you for the bubble tea, I’ll cook hot pot for you tonight!”
