Why Not (Lily ABO) - Chapter 9
Should she say it was expected, or had she sensed it all along?
“I’m sorry, Shi Xu. I already like someone.”
“I haven’t told everyone because we’re not officially together yet.”
Fu Shuyun’s tone was level, and her expression didn’t change at all upon hearing the Alpha’s confession. The moment Shi Xu showed up at the classroom door and invited her to dinner, Fu Shuyun subtly knew what he was going to say. She believed she had been obvious enough, short of announcing that she liked someone and was pursuing them.
Since Shi Xu still chose to speak, she would respect him and then politely reject him. Having spent so much time with Shi Jing recently, no one had confessed to her for a long time. If they can’t even see me, how can they confess?
After entering the school gate, the two said goodbye, and Fu Shuyun extended her right hand to Shi Xu.
“Even though we can’t be together, thank you, and I truly appreciate you.”
Thank you for letting me meet Shi Jing.
Fu Shuyun returned to the dorm. Yun Yan, who had just been on a video call with her “puppy,” immediately leaned in.
“Did you say yes? Are you officially dating?”
“Don’t be mad at me for saying this, Yunyun.”
“I think he looks a lot like your sister.”
Nonsense, of course he looks alike. They are biological siblings, same parents. Fu Shuyun shook her head, indicating she hadn’t agreed. Yun Yan wasn’t surprised; it was normal to reject a confession when you liked someone else. Just as she was about to comfort her neglected puppy, she heard Fu Shuyun’s voice overhead.
“Shi Jing.”
“Huh?”
“That’s my sister’s name. She’s Shi Xu’s biological sister.”
Huh?! What kind of plot is this? I want to be your boyfriend, but you want to be my sister-in-law? Yun Yan was momentarily stunned, unable to process the information. She only regained her senses when she heard Fu Shuyun sighing continuously.
“Girl, you are incredible!”
“Shi Xu already confessed. Why don’t you hurry up and make a move? You two have been so close lately; why not just use this chance to get together? Are you planning to spend the upcoming Singles’ Day alone? I won’t be keeping you company this year; my puppy is taking me out~”
Seeing Fu Shuyun’s gloomy, worried expression, Yun Yan, as a good best friend, felt she had to cheer her up.
“Don’t overthink it, Yunyun. Go for it!”
Hearing Yun Yan’s encouragement, Fu Shuyun, who had been wavering, immediately sent Shi Jing a WeChat message. The two arranged to meet two days later. That afternoon, Fu Shuyun went back to the dorm to shower after class before heading out. When she arrived at the school gate, she saw Shi Jing talking to Shi Xu. She hesitated, unsure whether to go over, as it felt terribly awkward.
Forget it, I have to face it sooner or later. Shi Xu will know eventually. If I’m not embarrassed, the embarrassment belongs to others. Smoothing her clothes and mentally preparing herself, Fu Shuyun walked up and greeted both of them.
“Sister, you’re here.”
As she spoke, she reached out and took Shi Jing’s hand. Shi Jing didn’t pull away; she naturally held Fu Shuyun’s hand as her palm met hers. Shi Jing continued her conversation with Shi Xu in a gentle tone. The moment their hands linked, Shi Xu felt like he understood something, yet he wasn’t entirely sure.
“Shi Xu, Senior just said it’s his birthday tomorrow and asked us to go together, just our group. Yun Yan is bringing her junior, and the Senior wants to introduce his boyfriend, so he just asked us to bring our partners if we have one.”
Fu Shuyun said this for Shi Jing’s benefit, but she forgot that she had rejected Shi Xu two days ago. After two days to recover, the rejected Shi Xu wasn’t overly bothered, but hearing Fu Shuyun’s words now, the pain of rejection surged again. He said nothing, simply said goodbye to them, and returned to the dorm.
“Sister, what were you two talking about just now?”
Shi Jing smiled. Just then, the traffic light turned red. While waiting, she picked up an envelope from the back seat and handed it to Fu Shuyun. It contained tickets to a concert she had always wanted to go to.
“During the National Day, Mom and Dad were just complaining that I hadn’t been home for a long time.”
“We originally planned a road trip for National Day, but then I had to travel for work. We’ll just have to wait until the New Year.”
At the largest hot pot restaurant in A City, the two sat down to wait for their food. Fu Shuyun held the concert tickets and turned to look at Shi Jing.
The temperature had cooled down slightly. After entering the restaurant, Shi Jing took off her jacket. She wore a clean white shirt with the cuffs rolled up, and her hair was tied back, exposing her fair neck.
“Sister.”
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
Shi Jing found Fu Shuyun’s serious expression adorable. Is eating hot pot really that serious? It seemed fine before? Meeting Fu Shuyun’s eyes, she looked down at the high bridge of her nose, and then to her rosy lips. She couldn’t help but admire how beautiful and captivating the young woman was. Shi Xu had good taste; she liked her too. However, Fu Shuyun’s next words made her start to doubt herself.
“Date me. I like you, Shi Jing.”
The air suddenly fell silent. Fu Shuyun listened to her frantic heartbeat, waiting for Shi Jing’s reply. The wait felt agonizingly long, so long that she thought she was about to be rejected. In reality, Shi Jing was just waiting for the waiter to serve the food. The entire process took only two or three minutes, during which she pondered their relationship.
Initially, she truly only saw Fu Shuyun as a younger sister. But looking back at their interactions now, the distance was not that of siblings; it was too intimate. No matter how close, AO siblings shouldn’t be like this, not to mention the recent physical contact. Previously, whenever an Omega crossed the line, she would sensitively and immediately create distance.
“You don’t have to answer me now. Sister, you can tell me after you’ve thought it through.”
Afraid of rejection, Fu Shuyun spoke before Shi Jing could. She was afraid of hearing words that would hurt her. As long as Shi Jing didn’t reject her, there was still a chance. If all else failed, she could arrange for a heat cycle…
A warm touch on her face interrupted her thoughts. She looked up at Shi Jing—still the gentle sister, smiling, her bright blue eyes looking at her earnestly.
“I really can’t give you an answer right now. To be honest, before this, Sister truly viewed you as a younger sister. When Shi Xu was born, I cried because he was a boy. Do you understand what I mean?”
“Give me some time. I don’t want to hastily agree to you and then end up saying, ‘I only ever saw you as a sister.’”
Although she didn’t agree immediately, Fu Shuyun was very satisfied. You can’t pressure her too much, right? Shi Jing drove Fu Shuyun to the school gate. Before getting out, Fu Shuyun unbuckled her seatbelt, leaned over, quickly kissed Shi Jing on the corner of her mouth, and rushed away after saying, “See you later, Sister.”
So soft.
The next day at the Senior’s birthday party, everyone expected Fu Shuyun to bring a date, but they only saw her alone.
“I confessed yesterday, and she said she needs time to think before replying.”
Everyone discussed which Alpha was so impressive that they had to consider Fu Shuyun’s confession, assuming they didn’t know that the people who liked her could fill the entire classroom. The topic quickly passed, as Fu Shuyun was not the main character. Only Shi Xu remained silent. Fu Shuyun saw this but said nothing.
Shi Xu, out of sorts, penalized himself with three drinks and left early. As soon as he was out, he took a taxi directly to Shi Jing’s place. Opening the door, he saw Shi Jing sitting on the sofa watching TV. He was angry, yet calm.
“Sis, is it you that Fu Shuyun likes?”
He went straight to the point. If Fu Shuyun liked Shi Jing, he would accept it wholeheartedly, because his sister truly was excellent. Once he knew the answer, he could truly move on from Fu Shuyun.
“Yes, she confessed to me yesterday.”
There was nothing to hide. She told Shi Xu everything about their situation. Shi Xu alternately frowned and rested his chin in his hand as he listened, finally unable to resist speaking.
“Sis, you are something else. Are you secretly a Beta?”
“Forget it. I don’t care, but you have to treat her well. She is going to be my future sister-in-law.”
“Tomorrow is the school club event, and she’ll be attending. Are you coming?”
Shi Jing was a little surprised that Shi Xu wasn’t angry. He was even inviting her to a school event. She considered that Friday wouldn’t have much work, so she likely wouldn’t need to work overtime. It might even be okay to sneak out a bit early. She agreed. Shi Xu immediately sent two WeChat messages to his best friend. My sister is too slow. If I don’t give her a push, I might never get a sister-in-law.
The next day, Shi Jing drove Shi Xu to school. He had originally returned home empty-handed, but now he was pulling a suitcase. When she asked what was inside, he refused to say, so Shi Jing didn’t press him.
At 5 PM, Shi Jing arrived at the A University gate. Shi Xu waited for her by the fence, holding his student ID card. She entered the school without issue using Shi Xu’s card. Finding Shi Xu, she was immediately teased that she looked nothing like a 27, almost 28-year-old. Then, he put a black baseball cap on her head.
A University did have a club performance today, but it was scheduled for the evening. Shi Xu had asked her to meet at 5 PM, and she couldn’t figure out what he was up to.
She drew many glances as she walked; everyone was wondering whose Alpha she was—her aura was excellent. Some bolder students even tried to chat her up, but Shi Jing politely declined each time. Shi Xu led her under a tree by the lake. This angle perfectly overlooked the lakeside pavilion while obstructing the view from the pavilion.
“Don’t tell me your club event is happening here?”
“This is the students’ favorite spot in A University. Coming so early, isn’t it nice to stroll around the campus?”
Shi Xu was mentally rolling his eyes. My dear sister, the lake, the shade, the pavilion—it’s the perfect spot for a confession, okay? He glanced at his phone. The time was just right. Crossing his arms, he leaned against a nearby tree, ready to watch the show.
Shi Jing, still wondering why this spot was so popular, suddenly saw a familiar figure enter her sight. Fu Shuyun? Talking to a boy? She couldn’t hear anything from this distance, but an inner voice kept telling her that Fu Shuyun was being confessed to, and if she accepted…
A long-forgotten emotion surged in her heart. In this moment, she was absolutely sure: she liked Fu Shuyun. She liked her with a possessive desire; she liked her with a desire to merge together. The lily of the valley scent in the air suddenly became strong and aggressive, and hmm, a little bit sour. Seeing the result she wanted, Shi Xu patted her and told her how to get to the pavilion before walking away alone.
Shi Jing quickly walked toward the pavilion, observing the situation there. It seemed to be over. Fu Shuyun had already left the pavilion and was walking away. They were about to meet.
But she was intercepted halfway. It was a female Alpha. Just as the Alpha finished her confession, Shi Jing appeared. The Alpha apologized, took Fu Shuyun’s hand, and started to walk away. The confessing Alpha, whose moment was ruined, was about to flare up, but a single look from Shi Jing made her forget what she was going to do. She froze, watching as the person who appeared out of nowhere took her crush away. This was the first time Shi Jing had done something so rude, and her ears were quietly turning red.
Fu Shuyun, whose hand was being held, blushed even more. My sister is so Alpha, stealing me away like that!
