A Consequence of Opposing the Heroine’s Halo (GL) - Chapter 34
Liu Sanye saw Bai Tong’s worried expression and knew she was concerned. She quickly spoke up, “Don’t worry, Bai Tong, nothing bad will happen.”
Then she turned back to ask Xun Qiu, “Elder Xun, I have something to ask you as well.”
“What is it? Speak.”
Liu Sanye suddenly grinned. “What I want to know is… did I take first place in the Outer Sect Grand Competition three days ago?”
If her memory served her right, she had given Ma Shi a severe beating back then. Ma Shi was ranked first in the Heaven Class, so beating him should logically make her the new number one, right?
Xun Qiu began to laugh as well. Seeing her laughter, Liu Sanye thought her plan had worked and got excited. Then, Xun Qiu followed up with: “You left the scene early; how could you be first? You didn’t even make the rankings.”
Hearing this result, Liu Sanye felt like she’d been hit with a club. “I didn’t even make the rankings?!”
Xun Qiu nodded.
Liu Sanye was profoundly disappointed.
Xun Qiu smiled. “Although you didn’t get first place, if you want a Foundation Establishment Pill, I can give you one for free.”
Liu Sanye cared about the ranking, not the prize for first place, but why was Xun Qiu suddenly being so nice to her? First giving her a map, and now a Foundation Establishment Pill.
Liu Sanye instinctively took half a step back. “Elder Xun, I feel like you’re up to something…”
Xun Qiu’s rare act of kindness had been misunderstood by the girl, making her so annoyed that she stepped forward and smacked Liu Sanye with her fan. “What could I be up to? Speak properly!”
Liu Sanye clutched her head where she’d been hit and replied grumpily, “If you aren’t up to something, why are you suddenly being so good to me?”
Xun Qiu silently pulled back her fan. “Was I not good to you before?”
Then, she uncomfortably put her hands behind her back. “If I had warned you back then, you wouldn’t have chosen the Wood-Devouring Sacred Scroll. Giving you a Foundation Establishment Pill is just… compensation…”
Liu Sanye finally understood. So Xun Qiu was feeling guilty! Well, at least she had a bit of a conscience! Following the principle of “not taking advantage is a waste,” Liu Sanye quickly replied, “Exactly! It’s all because of you that I’m so unlucky! So you definitely have to compensate me well!”
Xun Qiu looked at Liu Sanye, whose face clearly screamed “I’m going to rob you blind,” and instinctively clutched her storage space full of treasures. “What else do you want?”
Liu Sanye thought of the dozen or so dharma treasures in the room with nowhere to go, then held up two fingers. “I want storage bags. Two of them!”
Hearing that she only wanted storage bags—items that could be traded for two low-grade spirit stones on any street—Xun Qiu felt relieved but also somewhat speechless.
Quickly tossing the storage bags and the Foundation Establishment Pill to Liu Sanye, Xun Qiu—afraid that Liu Sanye might suddenly wise up and target the melon seeds and spirit fruits in her space—found a random excuse and bolted.
The storage bags in Liu Sanye’s hands weren’t even warm yet when Xun Qiu vanished. This left her a bit dazed. “Why run so fast? Do I look that greedy? She actually got scared off!”
With that, Liu Sanye weighed the two bags—one green and one yellow—in her hand, then turned around happily to say to Bai Tong, “Look, Bai Tong, we finally have storage bags!”
With storage bags, they could carry many items with them. It was convenient, lightweight, and essentially a must-have tool for traveling.
However, Bai Tong was still a bit unhappy because Liu Sanye hadn’t listened to her advice to give up the cultivation technique. She glanced at Liu Sanye and turned to walk back into the house. Liu Sanye, being somewhat oblivious, trotted up and followed her, talking incessantly.
“Bai Tong, do you want the green one or the yellow one?”
Bai Tong didn’t answer. Liu Sanye continued to talk to herself: “Green is more reserved. Bai Tong, I think green suits you better, so the green one is yours. The yellow one is mine; it matches my Hundred-Flower Umbrella perfectly.”
By the time Liu Sanye finished talking, they had entered the room. Liu Sanye had never used a storage bag before and was curious to try it out. She saw a bamboo stick lying on Bai Tong’s bed, so she casually picked it up to toss it into the bag.
The storage bag was a pouch the size of a small purse, while the stick was a meter long. But as soon as the stick reached the mouth of the bag, it rapidly shrank to the size of an embroidery needle and “zoomed” inside.
Witnessing this magical transformation with her own eyes, Liu Sanye cried out in surprise. Like someone who had never seen the world, she pressed her eye against the mouth of the bag, but unfortunately, it was pitch black inside and she couldn’t see anything.
Liu Sanye was just about to say how strange it was when she felt a chill on her back, as if she had entered the middle of winter with ice shards falling around her. She cautiously turned her head and caught Bai Tong staring at her with a dark, brooding gaze.
Liu Sanye swallowed hard. “Why are you staring at me like that?”
Bai Tong replied hollowly, “You took my things.”
Liu Sanye finally realized what she’d done. She tipped the storage bag over her hand, and the stick fell out. Liu Sanye pointed at it in surprise. “You mean this?”
Bai Tong stepped forward to take her item back, placed the bamboo stick back in its original spot, and tucked it under the quilt—hiding it away quite firmly.
After tucking the quilt in, Bai Tong turned back to look at her with a stern face. “Don’t touch things randomly.”
Liu Sanye watched, dumbstruck, then suddenly covered her mouth. Perhaps it was Bai Tong’s dead-serious expression that tickled Liu Sanye’s funny bone, but she really wanted to laugh. Finally, she couldn’t hold it back and burst out laughing. The laughter was like water breaking through a dam—unstoppable. Liu Sanye laughed until she doubled over, tears pricking her eyes.
Liu Sanye’s sudden laughter made Bai Tong a bit angry, and her face turned slightly red. “What are you laughing at?”
Liu Sanye leaned against the wall, laughing while shaking her head repeatedly. “I don’t know why, I just want to laugh. Oh, my stomach hurts.”
Bai Tong: “…”
Bai Tong sat on the bed with a frown, even angrier now. Her face puffed up like a bun, and she couldn’t help but mutter to herself, “What’s so funny?”
She truly didn’t think it was funny, but hearing this made Liu Sanye laugh even harder. “Tongtong, how can you be so cute? Oh, my stomach…”
Bai Tong: “…”
She decided she wouldn’t forgive her today.
Bai Tong was as good as her word; she ignored Liu Sanye for the rest of the day. Liu Sanye was left out in the cold until her head felt like it was growing mold.
When it was time to sleep that night, Bai Tong lay down and turned her back to Liu Sanye. Liu Sanye’s bed was by the window. The night was bleak, and a cold rain began to fall outside, drizzling just like Liu Sanye’s current state of mind.
In this scene, Liu Sanye sighed inwardly: If I had known, I wouldn’t have laughed so wildly… now Bai Tong won’t talk to me…
Unlike Liu Sanye, Bai Tong’s heart actually held a tiny bit of joy.
She clutched her blind cane, thinking about Sanye calling her “Tongtong” today.
Tongtong? Cute?
Bai Tong reached out with a small finger and poked the corner of her eye upward: Is being angry really cute?
After thinking for a short while, Bai Tong’s mouth turned up slightly, revealing a very tiny smile.
I should get angry more often in the future.
