- Chapter 1 - Volume 1: The Tale of the Fox Spirit and Me
The woman before her was beautiful.
An He narrowed her eyes into thin slits, surreptitiously peering through them while rotating the prayer beads in her hand.
She saw the woman’s eyes grow misty and her red lips part slightly. A slender, willow-like waist gradually drew closer, as if intending to coil around her body.
“Inappropriate.” Just as the woman was about to press against her, An He held her breath, focused her mind, and finally let two words slip from her mouth.
“Why inappropriate?” The woman smiled, though a chilling shadow flickered between her brows. “That isn’t what you said back then.”
“The past is like smoke; it has long since vanished with the wind. Do not cling to useless nostalgia,” An He said, keeping her face stiff as she scooted back a few inches. The beads in her hand spun rapidly.
In the vast dungeon, the only sound ringing in her ears was the crisp clack-clack of the beads colliding.
The woman stared at the string of beads for a long time without saying a word, her eyes cold as ice. After a moment, she raised her hand and, without further discussion, snatched the beads away, crushing them into her palm.
Finally, An He opened her eyes, a ripple of emotion finally surfacing on her face.
“Is the Buddha you believe in of any use?” The woman’s lips curled into a smirk, and the hand holding the beads tightened slightly.
In an instant, the beads were reduced to powder, disappearing as they scattered in a stray draft.
“Now that you are trapped in this dungeon, unable to fly away even if you had wings, has your Buddha ever saved you? Has he ever granted you salvation?”
“The time has not yet come.” She saw An He frown, a flash of pain crossing her eyes.
The woman was immensely satisfied with this reaction. She raised her hand, seemingly wanting to caress An He’s cheek.
But An He didn’t give her the chance.
She let out a cold laugh, reached into her pocket with a swift backhand motion, and pulled out another string of Buddhist prayer beads.
The woman froze, her expression becoming somewhat contorted.
An He thought to herself: You think I can’t handle you?
With the corners of her lips upturned, she resumed spinning the beads. Her lips moved rhythmically as she chanted a continuous string of “Amitabha.”
This time, the woman completely lost interest. Her face looked as sour as could be.
Ignoring her, An He closed her eyes like an old monk in deep meditation, looking entirely devoid of worldly desires.
“I will be back tomorrow.” The woman fell silent for a moment before finally flicking her sleeves and walking out.
The cell door slammed shut with a heavy clang, and everything returned to silence. It was as if no one had ever been there at all.
The person just now was named Lin Ruoxue. She was a demon.
She was also the female lead of the novel The World is a Drifting Dream of Sorrows, a fox spirit with a tragic fate.
Consistent with the settings of typical romance novels, even though Lin Ruoxue was a demon, she had never harmed a human. She had always been pure-hearted, kind, and cute.
But fate is a cruel master. Throughout her journey, there were always “vile people” trying to harm her—people who wanted nothing more than to skin her alive, drink her blood, and cast her into the eighteenth level of hell.
An He was one of those people. Specifically, she was the primary antagonist of the book: Ren Xixi.
As a boss—a villainous female lead capable of carrying 40% of the book’s plot—An He felt she was a bit miserable.
Actually, she was very, very miserable.
Ren Xixi was originally a wealthy young lady. She had no worries about food or drink, an endless supply of jewelry, and a life as comfortable as could be.
Her mistake was that during a spring outing one day, she rescued Lin Ruoxue before the fox had even taken human form.
Not only did she save her, but she also carried her around everywhere, which led to her meeting the male lead, Zhou Tage.
And that was that. The fox spirit and the young master locked eyes.
Before long, the young master and the transformed fox spirit fell for each other. Ren Xixi became total cannon fodder, having played the “matchmaker” like an absolute fool.
According to the plot, Ren Xixi was destined to “blacken.” Not only would she darken, but she would also join the demonic cultivators, hell-bent on making Lin Ruoxue’s life a living misery.
However, all of that was supposed to happen later. When An He transmigrated, Ren Xixi hadn’t turned evil yet, Lin Ruoxue hadn’t transformed, and the male lead, Zhou Tage, wasn’t even in the picture.
To avoid following in Ren Xixi’s footsteps, An He decided to sever the “red threads of fate” between Lin Ruoxue and Zhou Tage.
She hid Lin Ruoxue away, providing her with the best food and drink. She gave her whatever she wanted—except for permission to go outside and see people.
At the same time, An He forced herself to practice Buddhism. She spent every day copying scriptures and reciting sutras, determined to stand in total opposition to the demonic path.
Everything was executed perfectly. Absolutely “prefect.”
An He had been very happy, thinking she would soon complete her mission without any waves, storms, or scares.
And yet…
An He closed her eyes and let out a long, helpless sigh. “Is it really because my educational methods were flawed?”
“Yes,” a voice replied with a mechanical tone. “Stop overthinking it and just admit it.”
“I still don’t believe it,” An He continued to deflect.
Thinking that she had raised Lin Ruoxue to be a fox spirit who liked women… no matter how she looked at it, it definitely wasn’t her fault.
“Oh, just shut up already.” The System didn’t want to talk to her and rolled its eyes.
“Don’t go!” An He tried to stall. “I’m so bored all by myself. System-er, you can’t abandon me.”
The system didn’t speak again. Instead, it set off a “Double Kick” firecracker inside her head. BANG!
An He: “…” System-er is still a cranky old man today, I see.
Losing the system’s company, An He felt like a salted fish. She could only lower her head and continue reciting scriptures to relieve her boredom.
Right before Lin Ruoxue captured her and threw her into the dungeon, she had been self-studying the Diamond Sutra. However, she hadn’t had time to consolidate her learning; it was all skin-deep.
She had barely finished the opening when she hit a snag, unable to remember what came next.
“Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika’s Park at Sravasti, together with a community of 1,250 great bhiksus… what was after that?” She sighed, preparing to start from the beginning again.
After going through it three times, An He finally accepted the fact that she had indeed forgotten everything.
“Trash,” the system insulted her in her mind.
An He truly couldn’t find a reason to refute that point.
An He: Shedding the tears of the uneducated.
Since she couldn’t recite anymore, she stopped. An He decided to empty her mind and let her thoughts wander into the infinite universe.
However, in the eyes of others, her behavior was misinterpreted.
Miss Ren’s mood is extremely low. I saw her staring at the wall all afternoon without saying a word! She hardly even blinks!
Miss Ren is heartbroken! She can’t even recite her scriptures anymore! She recites a bit and forgets a bit!
I saw something even scarier! She actually ate meat today! She’s a Buddhist, yet she’s started eating meat again!
Lin Ruoxue heard all of these reports.
She frowned, her slender hands clenching into tight fists.
“Did I… push you to this state?”
