A Scumbag Alpha Gets the Simp’s Script - Chapter 16
The sentence exploded in Yu Jinzhao’s ears like a thunderclap. Although she had anticipated that Pei Daowan would find out sooner or later, it happened so fast that she was caught completely off guard.
Were my flaws really that obvious?!
As far as she knew, Pei Daowan didn’t understand the original Yu Jinzhao at all; the original had simply obsessed over her after a few meetings, using money and underhanded tactics to pursue her. Logically, Pei Daowan shouldn’t have figured it out this quickly. Was I being too kind?
Though a thousand waves were crashing in her heart, Yu Jinzhao’s expression remained unchanged. She slowly set down her chopsticks.
“Why do you say that? If I’m not Yu Jinzhao, then who am I?”
In truth, she didn’t care if Pei Daowan exposed her. She hadn’t bothered to mimic the original’s personality or maintain her lifestyle. She was just surprised. Did she really figure it out this fast?
Because they were close, she could clearly see that Pei Daowan’s pupils were an amber-tinted dark brown. They were beautiful, especially under the light; Yu Jinzhao could even see the faint textures within them, like an unknown planet.
Yu Jinzhao wasn’t lying—she was Yu Jinzhao. Whether in appearance or name, they were identical. The only difference was that they came from two different worlds. She just didn’t know where the previous Yu Jinzhao had gone.
Pei Daowan smiled softly, her expression light and slightly teasing, as she repeated herself.
“I know you aren’t the real Yu Jinzhao!”
Yu Jinzhao met her gaze without flinching. “I am Yu Jinzhao!”
The System was completely bewildered! It didn’t understand what the Host was doing. Why would she pierce Yu Jinzhao’s identity now? What good did that do her?! If she exposed the girl, how could she keep using her? If it weren’t too afraid to speak, it would be jumping with anxiety.
Hearing Yu Jinzhao’s retort, Pei Daowan’s face slowly grew cold. She had given her a chance to tell the truth.
“I hope you can be honest with me. Since I’ve said it, I naturally have full certainty. You said it yourself—I can trust you.”
That last sentence clearly struck a chord with Yu Jinzhao. She had indeed said those words, but she hadn’t expected the test to come so soon.
Yu Jinzhao looked at her for a long time before finally being the first to avert her gaze. She exhaled a long breath and decided to reveal her greatest secret. Pei Daowan wasn’t someone who could be easily fooled; if she lied, the woman would surely sense it. Besides, she was here for her anyway.
“I’m not lying to you. I really am Yu Jinzhao, but it’s a long story. I don’t know how to explain it, and even if I do, you might not believe it.”
The moment Yu Jinzhao spoke, Pei Daowan’s posture relaxed involuntarily, a sense of relief flickering through her heart that even she didn’t notice.
“You haven’t said it yet. How can you be so sure I won’t believe you?”
Yu Jinzhao had been holding it in for a long time. She had been here for a month without a single person to talk to. Since things had reached this point, she decided to let it all out.
“It’s true that I’m Yu Jinzhao, but I’m not the original Yu Jinzhao.”
The words were cryptic, and to an outsider, they would make no sense. But Pei Daowan shifted into a relaxed posture, signaling for her to continue.
“I’m not from here. I come from another world. I just went to sleep at home one night, and when I woke up, I was here for some reason.”
“Then a System appeared and told me I had to listen to you and help you complete your revenge. Only then can I go back; otherwise, I’ll be stuck here forever.”
Yu Jinzhao kept it brief, neither exaggerating nor seeking sympathy. For some reason, hearing Yu Jinzhao say she could only go back by helping her made Pei Daowan feel strangely annoyed. She really wants to leave that badly?
“Do you want to go back that much?” Thinking it, Pei Daowan asked it.
Yu Jinzhao took a deep breath and nodded heavily. “Yes. I really want to go back. I don’t belong here. I’m confused, and I’m lonely.”
This was the first time Yu Jinzhao had shown vulnerability in front of Pei Daowan, yet her tone remained calm, almost flat.
She’s only here because of me!
“Sorry. I didn’t want this either, and I don’t know why it was you who came.”
This was also the first time Pei Daowan had apologized to Yu Jinzhao. In truth, the girl was innocent, caught up in this struggle for no reason. But Pei Daowan didn’t feel she needed anyone’s help; she had done it alone in her past life, so why couldn’t she do it now?
Yu Jinzhao didn’t stop, pouring out what was in her heart: “I don’t know exactly what happened to you. I won’t ask, and you don’t have to tell me. But you have to believe me—I will never do anything to hurt you, because I came here for you.”
Yu Jinzhao’s voice was pleasant, possessing a womanly softness with a hint of low-pitched magnetism. If she had used a more dramatic, emotional tone, such a confession might have charmed anyone.
But her tone had no peaks or valleys. Instead of a vow, it sounded like a statement of fact—devoid of hesitation or regret. It was as if she had said it a thousand times in her head, and now, finally, Pei Daowan had heard it.
Pei Daowan was momentarily dazed and moved. How many years had it been since she’d heard such words? Countless people had expressed loyalty to her, but the result? What was the result! It was a lesson learned in blood, over and over again.
Suppressing the emotions stirred by Yu Jinzhao’s words, Pei Daowan laughed.
“I am a very petty and demanding person. I hold grudges. You say you’re here for me, so you’ll have to prove it with actions. Otherwise, I won’t believe you.”
Most people, upon hearing this, would have immediately declared their loyalty or added some sort of guarantee. But Yu Jinzhao did nothing. She simply gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.
It was only right that Pei Daowan didn’t believe her. After all, who would believe such a story? Coming here for her—what a heavy, grandiose reason!
Yu Jinzhao, however, was following her own heart. She didn’t choose to help just because the System told her to; she would act because she truly wanted to.
“I’m finished. Is there anything else you’d like?” Yu Jinzhao didn’t want to continue this topic, nor did she want to remain in a vulnerable position.
“I’m finished too. Let’s go back.” Pei Daowan responded quickly, her voice unreadable. It was as if nothing had happened and they had just finished a normal meal.
Yu Jinzhao walked a bit faster, reaching the counter to pay before Pei Daowan could, completely forgetting the woman’s earlier offer to treat her.
She was actually a bit angry. Why did she get to interrogate her like that? The imbalance between them left Yu Jinzhao feeling both resentful and aggrieved. One part of her mind told her it was normal for a stranger like Pei Daowan not to trust her, but her emotions felt unfairly treated.
Sourness, bitterness, and a sense of unprovoked grievance fermented in her heart. She couldn’t even maintain her facade. With a tight lip, she finished paying and turned to leave without a word.
Yu Jinzhao left in a hurry without looking back. Pei Daowan had reached out a hand to stop her, but she was too fast—Pei Daowan only managed to brush the edge of her sleeve.
“Yu—”
Pei Daowan instinctively started to call her name, but after a single syllable, she went silent. She had no reason or standing to make her stay. She lightly rubbed her fingertips where she had touched the cloth; nothing remained.
She sat back down, looking a bit forlorn, staring at the empty seat Yu Jinzhao had vacated. Her eyes were dark and unreadable.
Flick—
A flame lit a cigarette. Pei Daowan held another thin cigarette. Earlier, out of consideration for Yu Jinzhao, she had only taken two puffs. Now, she felt a desperate urge to finish the whole thing. Nicotine could soothe her anxiety and pressure; it could make her calm.
Finally, even as the cigarette burned down to the filter, Pei Daowan didn’t move. She remained in the same position for a long time. It wasn’t until the ash almost burned her fingers that she flinched, crushed the ember, and slowly stood up.
A look of faint confusion appeared on her face. Was I really right to treat her like that?
