A Scumbag Alpha Gets the Simp’s Script - Chapter 40
Having achieved her goal, Yu Jinzhao was naturally beaming with joy. The Hula Soup, which she usually found delicious, tasted even better now. She felt like crossing her legs and letting out a cheerful whistle.
Regardless of how Pei Daowan was feeling, Yu Jinzhao enjoyed this breakfast immensely. Fearing her expression was a bit too smug, she even pointedly turned her back while eating.
Pei Daowan felt numb. She realized that Yu Jinzhao was a total rogue; the polite, measured exterior was all a facade. Her true face was wicked and unruly. Then again, Yu Jinzhao is someone who can be smooth and charming in a crowd; how could a person like that be truly “honest”?
Treating the bread in front of her as if it were Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan vented her frustration by stabbing it repeatedly. Even after riddling it with holes, she didn’t feel satisfied.
“I’m done eating. Let’s go see the doctor.”
Yu Jinzhao agreed instantly, her previous rebellion and roguishness nowhere to be seen. Her face was full of smiles as she stuffed the bread Pei Daowan had stabbed into her own mouth, mumbling, “Can’t waste food.”
The drive to the hospital was somewhat somber. Without Yu Jinzhao’s deliberate antics to tease her, she became exceptionally silent. She simply watched the scenery outside the window rush past, not saying a single word to Yu Jinzhao.
A strange atmosphere settled in the car. To avoid too much contact, Pei Daowan specifically sat in the back, leaving Yu Jinzhao to drive alone.
It was strange; when Yu Jinzhao talked, she just wanted her to shut up, yet now that she was silent, she found herself wishing for some noise. Aside from the sound of tires rolling against the pavement, the car was silent—the soundproofing was so good she couldn’t even hear the street noise.
Lifting her eyes slightly, she could see Yu Jinzhao’s steady, quiet eyes in the rearview mirror. When she wasn’t looking at her, she looked a bit sharp, yet the moment her gaze accidentally brushed over Pei Daowan’s silhouette, it softened instantly.
This subtle shift made Pei Daowan’s heart waver, prompting her to steal several more glances through the mirror.
They arrived at the hospital quickly. Pei Daowan led the way with practiced ease, as if she had been there many times. Yu Jinzhao, unfamiliar with hospitals, had to check the signs every few steps to ensure she didn’t get lost.
However, Pei Daowan was so familiar with the place that she reached the correct department without glancing at a single sign. Yu Jinzhao looked up; the sign on the door read: “Alpha Gland Clinic.”
“You go in. I’ll wait out here for you.”
When Pei Daowan said this, Yu Jinzhao felt a subtle sensation. Pei Daowan was treating her like a child—taking her to the doctor and waiting outside for her. Seeing Yu Jinzhao dazing off, Pei Daowan assumed she was afraid because she didn’t understand Alpha physiology and offered some comfort.
“It’s fine. It’s just a check-up. There won’t be any major problems.”
With a curious mix of feelings, Yu Jinzhao entered the consultation room. Outside, Pei Daowan was actually suffering more than she was. She felt a twinge of regret; she shouldn’t have been so ruthless back then. She worried about permanent side effects and wondered why she hadn’t brought Yu Jinzhao sooner.
After what felt like ages, Yu Jinzhao emerged. Pei Daowan hurried toward her, a trace of anxiety leaking through her expression.
“How was it?”
Rather than focusing on her own condition, Yu Jinzhao focused on Pei Daowan’s expression. She really does care about me!
Yu Jinzhao downplayed it: “It’s hard to tell yet. I have to go for some tests.”
“Okay. I’ll go with you.”
There it is—the parental protection again. Yu Jinzhao bit the tip of her tongue.
“It’s fine. It’s close by, just upstairs. You sit here and rest; I’ll be down in a bit.”
Yu Jinzhao was insistent, and Pei Daowan had to yield. She watched as Yu Jinzhao’s retreating figure blurred and disappeared, then she turned and knocked on the consultation room door…
When Yu Jinzhao returned, Pei Daowan was still sitting in the same spot, legs together and hands folded over her lap. Yu Jinzhao found the posture incredibly “obedient.” She really sat here waiting for me. How nice!
She met Pei Daowan with a smile. “I’m back.”
Pei Daowan looked at her, an unnatural flicker in her eyes as she avoided Yu Jinzhao’s gaze and urged her, “Go show the results to the doctor.”
“Mm, it’s fine.” This time, Pei Daowan followed closely behind.
She watched as the doctor scanned the report and began rattling off a series of technical terms. To be honest, she didn’t understand much of it—something about the glands re-developing after damage, potential pheromone instability or loss of control, and not ruling out secondary differentiation. It didn’t sound very optimistic.
But Yu Jinzhao didn’t pay much attention to that. On one hand, she had no concept of how “serious” the doctor’s words were. More importantly, she was watching Pei Daowan’s face grow increasingly stern, until she looked almost frighteningly fierce.
She felt her “preferences” being triggered. She wasn’t a masochist, but she truly loved seeing this expression on Pei Daowan—especially knowing it was only for her. This aura, combined with her face, was just too “big sister.” It hit Yu Jinzhao’s lifelong aesthetic perfectly. She’s actually quite cool, she thought, feeling completely smitten.
Pei Daowan had no idea what she was thinking. If she knew Yu Jinzhao’s head was currently filled with such irrelevant thoughts, she would have hit her.
At the moment, her heart was heavy. The gland situation truly wasn’t good. When she originally drugged the “beast,” she intended to ruin them completely, but she hadn’t counted on the real Yu Jinzhao arriving. Now, the glands were undergoing secondary differentiation, but because the initial damage was so severe, it had left behind significant hidden dangers. Her glands might become increasingly uncontrollable, ranging from heat cycle disorders to physical damage.
Exhaling a long breath, she saw Yu Jinzhao’s nonchalant attitude and felt a surge of irritation—unsure if she was angrier at herself or the girl.
Inexplicably, the frustration turned to tears. They came so unexpectedly that even Pei Daowan didn’t realize until she saw her own reflection in Yu Jinzhao’s panicked eyes. She was stunned; she hadn’t cried in years.
Seeing her cry, Yu Jinzhao panicked. Even when she had treated her like that the other night, she hadn’t seen her cry this way.
“I’m sorry…”
She tried to wipe away the tears, but more kept coming. Yu Jinzhao couldn’t keep up and could only apologize frantically.
“Yu Jinzhao, you really are a scoundrel.”
“I am. Don’t cry, Pei Daowan. I’m not worth your tears.”
More tears fell, landing on Yu Jinzhao’s fingers and making her heart feel scorched. She pulled the woman directly into her embrace, using her own clothes as a tissue, letting her rest against her shoulder.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. See? I’m perfectly fine. It’ll be fine…”
“Sister~ Good Sister~ Stop crying…”
Pei Daowan felt embarrassed. To lose her composure in front of Yu Jinzhao after all these years—and more so, she was shocked she could even cry in a place like this. The doctor hid awkwardly in the corner; if it weren’t his own clinic, he would have run out.
Pei Daowan composed herself quickly. Though the marks at the corners of her eyes hadn’t faded, her expression had steadied. In her embarrassment, she turned to talk to the doctor herself. Fortunately, because it was caught early, the problem wasn’t insurmountable. For now, they would follow a conservative treatment: regulating pheromone release and regular check-ups.
Pei Daowan breathed a visible sigh of relief. Feeling self-conscious, she grabbed Yu Jinzhao and hurried out.
On the way back, Pei Daowan stuffed Yu Jinzhao into the passenger seat and drove herself, ignoring the girl. Yu Jinzhao felt like she was walking on air. She stole a glance at Pei Daowan’s side profile. She didn’t want to be smug, but she was truly happy; Pei Daowan cared about her even more than she’d imagined.
Pei Daowan drove straight to the office. She had been swamped lately with office hunting, hiring, and project investments. Taking Yu Jinzhao to the doctor had cost her several days of overtime. At the office entrance, she didn’t want Yu Jinzhao to come up; she still felt she’d lost face and didn’t want to face her just yet.
“I’m at the office. Take a taxi back yourself.”
Yu Jinzhao checked the time; it was nearly noon. She didn’t want to leave her yet. “I’m a bit hungry. Let’s eat together before you go up.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Pei Daowan agreed. After all, she was the patient today. “What do you want to eat?”
“What’s around here? I want to eat what you usually like.”
Pei Daowan pursed her lips. She didn’t have a favorite; usually, Qingyi brought her food when she was busy. She really didn’t know what was good nearby. Seeing her hesitation, Yu Jinzhao smiled knowingly. She knew it—Pei Daowan paid zero attention to food.
Back in school and later at work, Yu Jinzhao had always scouted the local restaurants first. “Hehe, then we’ll leave it to luck. Based on my years of experience, that place looks like it’ll be good.”
Pei Daowan followed her gaze to a simple ramen shop. It looked ordinary, but because it was near lunchtime, it was packed; you couldn’t even see an empty seat from the outside. Pei Daowan wondered if Yu Jinzhao was judging the quality solely based on the crowd. Despite her doubts, she found a parking spot and accompanied her inside.
The meal was quiet. Yu Jinzhao had a good eye; the food was decent. In a crowded place, Yu Jinzhao maintained her social grace perfectly, showing none of her usual roguish behavior.
Heh! She’s using her networking skills on me now.
If Yu Jinzhao knew what she was thinking, she would have cried out in protest. She knew how to behave in public. Besides, there was another reason she was too shy to mention: in public, Pei Daowan looked so much like a “cool boss”—her aura was “do not approach,” and her gaze could be a bit fierce. It made Yu Jinzhao not dare to act up; she was instantly tamed by that presence.
