Almost instantly, Ning Lingzhou shot up from the bed.

She was in such a hurry that she didn’t even bother putting on shoes before throwing open the door and rushing out.

She ran all the way downstairs. Just as she reached the entrance, Lin Zhi happened to pull up in her car. Ning Lingzhou ran over, opened the door, and got in. “Go to Youmeng Technology. Hurry!”

Seeing Ning Lingzhou’s tightly furrowed brows, pale complexion, and icy expression, Lin Zhi instinctively did as she was told.

Once she saw the navigation start guiding them toward Youmeng Technology, Ning Lingzhou let out a long breath.

Her head started hurting again. She leaned back against the rear seat and called her assistant. “No matter what, don’t let anything happen to Miss Xu.”

After hanging up, Ning Lingzhou suddenly felt a twisting pain in the upper-left side of her abdomen.

How annoying. She had forgotten that stomach problems were practically standard equipment for domineering CEOs.

This really was adding fuel to the fire.

Ning Lingzhou pressed one hand over her abdomen and gripped the back seat with the other, gritting her teeth against the pain. “Lin Zhi, do you have any stomach medicine?”

“Yes, in the trunk.”

Lin Zhi saw through the rearview mirror that Ning Lingzhou looked terrible. Her striking face was tightly drawn with pain, her lips dry and pale, and she wanted to pull over to get the medicine for her.

“Don’t stop!”

Curled up in the back seat, Ning Lingzhou shouted, “Go to Youmeng Technology first. Hurry!”

Seeing Ning Lingzhou drenched in sweat from the pain, her voice already weak, yet still refusing to let her stop, Lin Zhi’s brows knitted tightly as well. While they were waiting at a traffic light, she passed the bag from the passenger seat back to her.

“I bought you some soup dumplings and lean pork congee. Eat something first.”

Ning Lingzhou reached out and shakily took a soup dumpling, then slowly and painfully managed to eat it.

Her stomach still hurt, and she still had a fever. Beads of sweat the size of soybeans formed on her forehead, sliding down her fair cheeks, over her slender neck, and disappearing beneath her silk pajamas.

In all her years of life, Ning Lingzhou had never felt this miserable before.

“President Ning, there’s still time to go to the hospital,” Lin Zhi reminded her.

Once they passed this intersection, turning back toward the hospital would mean making a huge detour.

“No.”

Seeing that Ning Lingzhou was determined not to go, Lin Zhi had no choice but to keep driving, pressing harder on the accelerator.

Xu Fangqing stood at the edge of the rooftop of Youmeng Technology, holding Xin Duo’s hand. She glanced warily behind her, looking somewhat nervous.

That morning, Xin Duo had picked her up and brought her to Youmeng Technology for the endorsement photo shoot.

Everything had gone smoothly.

Unexpectedly, just as they were finishing, they ran into the company’s owner, Tang Lei, who said he wanted to invite Xu Fangqing and Xin Duo to a meal.

Xin Duo declined, saying Xu Fangqing still had another engagement.

Tang Lei blocked their way and refused to let them leave, changing his offer and saying he would treat them to coffee instead and that it wouldn’t take much time.

Since he was the owner of a company they were working with, Xin Duo found it difficult to refuse, so she took Xu Fangqing to Tang Lei’s office.

While they were drinking coffee, Tang Lei’s gaze kept roaming over Xu Fangqing. Seeing the beauty’s cool, aloof demeanor only made him itch with desire even more, and he couldn’t resist sitting down beside her.

He reached out, intending to touch Xu Fangqing’s thigh.

Xu Fangqing moved away. Her hand loosened slightly, spilling coffee all over Tang Lei’s hand.

He sprang to his feet, shaking his hand repeatedly, his brows twisting together.

“I’m sorry, President Tang. My hand slipped.”

Even then, Xu Fangqing maintained a surface-level politeness, hoping Tang Lei would remember his status and not do anything that would invite gossip.

Xin Duo also stepped in front of Xu Fangqing. “President Tang, sorry, but we still have something to do. We’ll be leaving first.”

The two of them had only just opened the door when the bodyguards outside blocked their way.

Xin Duo looked back at Tang Lei, her brows furrowed and her tone turning cold. “President Tang, what is the meaning of this?”

Tang Lei wiped his hand with a tissue, then leisurely walked over and sat down in a chair. “Miss Xin can leave. Miss Xu has to stay and compensate me for my suit.”

“President Tang.” Xin Duo kept Xu Fangqing protected at her side. “If anything happens to us inside your company, can you bear the responsibility?”

“Heh.” Tang Lei raised an eyebrow. “No need for Miss Xin to worry. Whatever happens, I, Tang, can bear the consequences.”

Xin Duo suddenly curled her lips into a smile. “So there’s no room for discussion, then.”

Xin Duo lightly patted the back of Xu Fangqing’s hand, then spun around and punched one of the bodyguards in the face before he had time to react.

It happened so quickly that the other bodyguards didn’t react in time either.

Xin Duo grabbed Xu Fangqing and rushed out, running toward the stairwell.

When they saw bodyguards coming up from below, they had no choice but to go upward instead, all the way to the rooftop, where there was nowhere left to run.

Tang Lei followed with his men, leisurely looking at them. “Ladies, why are you running? It’s not like I’m going to do anything to you.”

As he spoke, he motioned for his men to surround them. Xu Fangqing stood at the edge of the rooftop and glanced behind her before threatening, “Don’t come any closer. If you do, I’ll jump.”

“Don’t.”

Seeing that Xu Fangqing had such a fierce temperament, Tang Lei was afraid he might truly push her too far and cause something irreversible.

It would be such a pity if a beauty like this died just like that.

Besides, they were on his turf. He had plenty of time to wear them down.

Just when Xu Fangqing and the others didn’t know what to do, a commotion suddenly came from downstairs.

A man dressed in black had barged into Youmeng Technology and taken down several people who tried to stop him.

Tang Lei frowned and ordered the bodyguards behind him, “Go down and check.”

A little while later, the man in black came up carrying one of the bodyguards and threw him to the ground.

Tang Lei was startled by him. “Who are you? How dare you—how dare you cause trouble on my turf?!”

Without saying a word, the man in black stepped forward and punched Tang Lei squarely in the face, knocking him straight to the floor.

Then he walked over to Xu Fangqing and said respectfully, “Miss Xu, President Ning sent me to pick you up.”

Xin Duo looked at him suspiciously, but Xu Fangqing patted her arm. “It’s fine now. Let’s go.”

Xu Fangqing followed the man in black downstairs. The moment she stepped out of the building, she saw Ning Lingzhou get out of a car and run toward her.

When she reached her, Ning Lingzhou grabbed her arm and looked her up and down, asking anxiously, “Are you okay? Were you hurt anywhere?”

Xu Fangqing stared at her blankly. Ning Lingzhou was wearing pajamas and had come out barefoot, completely disregarding her appearance.

Her forehead was covered in sweat, her cheeks flushed, yet her lips were frighteningly pale. Even breathing seemed exhausting for her.

And yet her eyes were filled with completely undisguised worry for Xu Fangqing. It looked especially genuine.

“I’m fine.”

Warmth rose unexpectedly in her heart. She gently pushed Ning Lingzhou’s hand away, afraid that if she were even a second slower, she would fall into that gaze.

Some mistakes only needed to be made once. She couldn’t be foolish again.

Ning Lingzhou realized that she had been too anxious and withdrew her hand. “It’s good that you’re okay. It’s good that you’re okay.”

Lin Zhi ran over with medicine in her hands. “President Ning, fever medicine and stomach medicine. Hurry and take them.”
