A Scummy Alpha Supporting Character Accidentally Marks the Heroine After Transmigrating into a Book (GL) - Chapter 39
Yan Nanjue stood outside the ward for a while before a pair of small hands suddenly lunged from behind and hugged her legs.
“Sister Yan, why are you standing out here?” Bai Qingzhi looked up, her eyes sparkling as she peered at her expectantly. “Why aren’t you going in with Sister?”
Yan Nanjue patted the girl’s head. Her gaze instinctively fell on the child’s lips; the bluish tint seemed deeper than the last time she had visited.
“I have some business to attend to.”
Bai Qingzhi reached out to take her hand, chirping happily, “Are you done now? If you’re done, let’s go in together!”
Yan Nanjue hesitated, but a tugging force came from her hand. Bai Qingzhi was eager to take her back to see her sister, skipping and hopping as she moved forward. Mindful of the child’s frail health, Yan Nanjue didn’t resist and allowed herself to be led along.
“Walk a bit slower.”
Back in the room, Bai Qingzhi called out joyfully, “Sister! I brought Sister Yan back!”
Bai Wan looked up, and their eyes met. After only a few seconds, Bai Wan lowered her gaze, turning her attention back to her younger brother. Within the ward, only the laughter of the two children could be heard.
They stayed at the sanatorium for the better part of the day. When it was time to leave, Yan Nanjue got into the car first.
Bai Wan was held back by Bai Qingzhi. She turned around to see Bai Qingzhi’s face full of expectation and a subtle urgency. She couldn’t help but feel puzzled. “What is it?”
“Sister, give me a hug,” Bai Qingzhi said.
Bai Wan did as requested, pulling her into an embrace and then hugging her brother. “Why are you acting so spoiled all of a sudden?”
Bai Qingzhi just counted on her fingers and said, “You hugged us before, too.”
Bai Wan was confused. What “before”? Before she could think it through, Bai Qingzhi acted spoiled again. “I just wanted you to hug me. Alright, you and Sister Yan go now. I’m taking Brother back inside.”
With that, she waved her hand and cheerfully led Bai Xinzhi back to the room.
Bai Wan watched the two children return to the ward before turning to leave.
The black car rolled over the asphalt, following the same route they had taken to get there. Bai Wan had traveled this road so many times she had memorized every turn and intersection.
There was still a short distance before reaching the city center. The driver waited at a red light for a moment. When the light turned green, he stepped on the accelerator to slowly start the vehicle.
At that exact moment, a speeding private car suddenly lunged from the right.
Looking out the window, Yan Nanjue saw the out-of-control vehicle. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized that, based on its trajectory, it was going to collide with the front half of their car.
In the brief two seconds it took for her to react, the private car slammed straight into them!
In that flash of lightning, Yan Nanjue’s body moved faster than her mind. She instinctively lunged toward her side to shield Bai Wan.
BOOM!
A deafening sound of metal colliding and tires screeching filled the air. The black car they were in was thrown sideways. Fortunately, only the front half took the impact. The car skidded several meters before crashing into a fire hydrant and coming to a halt.
With the black car acting as a buffer, the private car eventually crashed into a nearby green belt.
A long, piercing ring echoed in Yan Nanjue’s ears. Her body briefly lost sensation. A flash of white light crossed her vision, and it took a while for her sight to return. The first thing she saw was the shattered window glass; only then did a numb, dull pain begin to surge.
In her arms was a warm body.
She lowered her head slowly and blinked, meeting Bai Wan’s eyes—eyes filled with a mixture of terror and shock. Before she could react, a warm liquid trickled down her eyelid, instantly staining her vision a blurry, visceral crimson.
Yan Nanjue instinctively reached up to touch it, realizing only then that it was blood.
“System, help…”
She let out a weak cry and fainted straight away, terrified by the sight of the blood.
The body that had been protecting her went limp and slumped directly onto her. Bai Wan, leaning against the car door, stared down in a daze. She saw a patch of snow-white skin and a vast amount of vivid red. The two colors intertwined, making the white look deathly pale and the red look hauntingly bright—it practically seared her retinas.
Her breathing suddenly became shallow.
Drip.
Warm blood fell onto her neck. One drop, then two. Bai Wan’s nose caught the pungent scent of iron.
The driver, having just recovered from his daze, looked toward the back seat in a panic. “President Yan?! Madam! Are you two okay?”
He turned his head and was so shocked by the scene that he forgot his own injuries. “Did President Yan faint? I’m calling 120 now! Madam… Madam! Madam, are you alright?”
Bai Wan couldn’t quite snap out of it. The driver’s shouts sounded like they were thousands of miles away, muffled as if through a layer of water. She reached out gently to push the person off her.
“…Yan Nanjue?”
There was no response. The person who had lunged for her was unconscious.
The ambulance arrived with lightning speed. Bai Wan watched as the Alpha was lifted onto a stretcher. Nurses surrounded her, asking if she felt unwell anywhere. She turned her head sluggishly and shook it gently.
However, the nurse saw the blood on her and, without a word, brought her onto the ambulance as well. “Let’s go to the hospital for a check-up first. Are you in shock?”
Bai Wan was taken to the hospital in a state of dissociation. After cooperating with the doctors for an examination and confirming she wasn’t seriously injured—only some grazes—the nurse left her to attend to other patients.
Lin Furuo, having received the news, rushed to the hospital with several subordinates. Seeing her from a distance at the emergency entrance, she quickened her pace. “Madam, are you alright? The blood on you is…”
She followed up immediately: “How is President Yan? Xiao Wang said she fainted.”
Bai Wan looked down and saw the vivid red stains on her collar.
“I’m fine. This is her blood.”
Lin Furuo paused. Bai Wan looked up, her eyes filled with a clear, piercing confusion, as if she had encountered a problem that baffled her.
“She… lunged over.”
Though the sentences were disconnected, Lin Furuo somehow understood what she was saying. Startled, she soothed, “Go inside first. I’ll go check on President Yan. I’ve already contacted the hospital management; Chairman Yan is on her way.”
Bai Wan lowered her eyes, using silence to decline the suggestion to go in.
Lin Furuo looked at her uneasily. “Stay here and don’t wander off.” She signaled her subordinates to keep an eye on the Madam and rushed into the emergency room herself.
Yan Nanjue’s injuries were not life-threatening—mostly superficial cuts from the glass and some bruising. Once treated, she could be moved to a regular ward. Hearing from the doctor that her boss was okay, Lin Furuo finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“When will she wake up, doctor?”
The doctor didn’t give a specific time but flipped through the chart. “She likely fainted from the shock. If she feels dizzy or nauseous when she wakes up, take her for a CT scan.”
Lin Furuo noted down the instructions, glanced at her boss lying on the bed with a bandaged head, and exited the emergency room.
The “Boss’s Wife” looked like a wandering soul, her gaze fixed on a tiny spot by her toes. Lin Furuo suddenly had a few guesses in her mind, and her scalp felt a bit numb. She immediately thought of the chain reaction this event would cause once word got out.
She had her subordinates take the Madam to a ward while she dutifully stood guard by the emergency room.
By the time Yan Changqing arrived, Yan Nanjue had been moved from emergency to a VIP ward.
“Chairman Yan, the accident happened on the way back from the sanatorium. Xiao Wang is currently on oxygen. I’ve had someone pull the surveillance footage; it was an accident. The other car’s brakes failed, and it was going too fast when it hit President Yan’s car.”
Yan Changqing’s eyes were cold. “How is Que?”
Lin Furuo relayed the doctor’s report and added, “The Madam seems to be in shock. She’s sitting in her ward and refuses to move. I tried to convince her to change her clothes, but she didn’t react.”
Yan Changqing frowned. Shocked by a minor car accident? That didn’t sound like a reaction that child would have. “Find someone to take her for a full-body check-up. If she won’t go, tie her up and take her.”
Lin Furuo carried out the order, took the dazed Madam for a check-up, and respectfully sent her back to the adjacent VIP ward before returning to report to Yan Changqing.
“I see. Stay at the hospital and watch over the two of them. Don’t worry about the company.”
Lin Furuo nodded and lowered her eyes, whispering, “There is one more thing I think I should tell you.”
“Speak.”
“Xiao Wang said that where President Yan was sitting, she wouldn’t have been affected by the shattered window. But when the accident happened, she… shielded the Madam with her body. That’s why her injuries are much heavier.”
Yan Changqing, who had been rubbing the rim of her cup, paused. She lifted her sharp eyes to look at her.
“…What?”
Lin Furuo felt a chill on her back but honestly repeated herself.
Yan Changqing’s gaze fell on the person lying on the bed. She stared at the face that resembled her own for a long time, her brow furrowing uncontrollably. Her eyes were filled with unsuppressed surprise and bewilderment.
“Que… oh, Que. Mother thought you had just found a new toy and were too fresh with it to let go. But looking at this… how can you be serious?”
Yan Changqing’s murmured voice echoed in the room. “Have you realized yet that you’re being serious?”
The sleeping person offered no answer. Yan Changqing rubbed her temples with a headache and, for once, asked more about Bai Wan’s condition. Learning she was fine, she waved her hand to signal Assistant Lin to leave.
Yan Nanjue opened her eyes in the middle of the night. she stared dizzily at the ceiling for a few seconds before falling back into a heavy sleep. She didn’t fully wake up until the following evening. Only Assistant Lin and a secretary were in the ward.
“President Yan, you’re awake? Do you feel any discomfort? I’ll get the doctor.” The secretary ran out.
Yan Nanjue was helped into a sitting position. Her vision went dark for a moment before slowly recovering.
“Assistant Lin…”
“I’m here, President Yan.”
Yan Nanjue felt pain radiating from all over. She raised her hand and saw the bandages on her arm, realizing with a delayed start that she had been in an accident.
“System! System!!”
【I’m here. Stop wailing.】
Hearing the familiar electronic voice, she relaxed slightly and asked about the heroine. “Do you know what happened after I fainted in the car?”
【I know.】
“How is she? Did anything happen to her? Is it serious?”
【She’s fine. Nothing happened, it’s not serious.】 The System thought for a bit. 【When you fainted, you fell directly onto her. When the ambulance came, you were still lying on her. She seemed to be in shock; she only reacted when you were moved onto the stretcher, and she was pulled onto the ambulance with you.】
Yan Nanjue breathed a sigh of relief. As long as she was okay.
The System continued to describe the aftermath: 【Your blood dripped onto her body. She seemed terrified and has been in a daze ever since. When Yan Changqing arrived, she had her forced into a check-up. I don’t know the results, but Assistant Lin didn’t check. She came to see you once while you were unconscious.】
“President Yan… President Yan? Can you hear me?” Lin Furuo saw her dazed look and her heart tightened, fearing there was a complication.
“I’m fine,” Yan Nanjue said. She looked over, signaling Lin Furuo to report on what happened while she was out.
Assistant Lin knew more and spoke in much more detail than the System, but none of it was what Yan Nanjue wanted to know.
“Where is she?” Yan Nanjue asked.
Lin Furuo understood. “The Madam is in the neighboring ward. She is currently on an IV drip.”
Yan Nanjue was stunned. “I thought she was fine?”
“It’s just glucose. The doctor said the Madam has severe malnutrition and anemia.”
Yan Nanjue sneered. “She brought that on herself. When has the Yan family ever deprived her of food or clothes?”
Lin Furuo kept her eyes down, wisely choosing to remain silent. Once her boss’s emotions calmed down, she cautiously brought up another matter that might cause anger:
“President Yan, the news of the accident didn’t stay hidden. Someone saw you in emergency yesterday. Miss Shuqing was making a fuss this morning to see you; her sister eventually had her tied to a wheelchair and taken back, but she hasn’t stopped.”
“Furthermore… Miss Shuqing knows the Madam was also in the car.”
“She also knows that you were injured because you shielded the Madam.”
