A Scummy Alpha Supporting Character Accidentally Marks the Heroine After Transmigrating into a Book (GL) - Chapter 47
Bai Wan went up to the second floor with a fresh glass of wine.
Shunning the crowd, she sat alone on a semi-enclosed small terrace, her gaze falling upon the cold, silent garden below. It was quiet here; she couldn’t hear the noisy gossip or see the people she disliked.
After sitting in solitude for a while, the phone in her handbag vibrated abruptly. She didn’t reply. It vibrated several more times in quick succession—the person sending the messages was clearly growing angry because they couldn’t find her anywhere.
She took a shallow sip of her wine, her lips stained with the rich scent of grapes.
“…So annoying.”
Whether she was addressing the new messages or the person on the other end of the line, her voice was nearly swallowed by the night wind. A gentle breeze blew, yet it failed to disperse the faint, lingering restlessness within her.
Before the next message could arrive, Bai Wan stood up, intending to return to the banquet hall. Upon exiting the terrace, she ran head-on into an Omega in the corridor.
Bai Wan never spared a glance for people she didn’t care about. Even if the face looked somewhat familiar, she ignored it and moved to walk past.
“Bai Wan?”
To her surprise, the person behind her called out her name. Bai Wan paused slightly and turned around.
“Ah… called you the wrong thing. Mrs. Yan.” The Omega before her had fox-like eyes and a light smile, though there was no warmth in her gaze.
“Is something the matter?” Bai Wan asked.
Cheng Lian smiled. “I’d like to ask Mrs. Yan for a favor—help me find someone.”
Bai Wan knew exactly who she was looking for, but she was unwilling to help, nor did she have the obligation to do so. This sentiment was clear in her eyes.
“I know she’s hiding from me,” Cheng Lian continued. “Chen Wanjun went abroad recently; distant water can’t put out a nearby fire, so she can’t help. Luo Shuqing is under house arrest and can barely save herself. The only person who can help her is your lover.”
“So,” Cheng Lian asked, her dark eyes seemingly able to peer into one’s soul, “where is she?”
The woman stood at the boundary of light and shadow, her upper body submerged in darkness. Her smiling, snow-white face took on a slightly distorted, ghostly quality.
She was a lunatic, looking for her girlfriend by harrassing a stranger.
“I don’t know.”
Cheng Lian remained smiling, her tone unwavering. “You know.”
“I must trouble Mrs. Yan to tell me: where is Ji Ziyi right now?” Her tone was polite, but her eyes were bloodshot, appearing an unnatural crimson in a daze.
This Omega is sick. Bai Wan reached this conclusion almost instantly.
“This has nothing to do with me. You’re asking the wrong person,” Bai Wan said coldly. “And besides, she is not my lover.”
Footsteps approached. Bai Wan didn’t look back. In the next instant, her arm was grabbed, and she was pulled backward by the force, her body lightly bumping into the person’s chest behind her.
“Bai. Wan.”
An angry voice rang in her ear. “What did I tell you? Who gave you permission to wander off on your own?!”
Bai Wan frowned and tried to pull her arm away, but the grip only tightened.
Yan Nanjue had arrived like an encroaching storm, her face full of icy fury. She had searched the lounge, the dining area, and even the back garden without finding Bai Wan. She had almost feared the woman had been taken or that something had happened again. Fortunately, she ran into an unfamiliar socialite who told her Bai Wan seemed to have gone to the second-floor terrace.
She gritted her teeth in interrogation. “Why didn’t you reply to my messages? What are your eyes and hands for? You’re getting bolder and bolder, Mrs. Yan.”
She practically bit out the last few words.
Bai Wan looked up at her. “My phone was on silent; I didn’t see them. I just came up to sit for a while. I was about to go downstairs when I ran into your friend.”
Hearing this, Yan Nanjue finally took a moment to look across from them. She was surprised to find Boss Cheng was actually here, watching their tug-of-war with a smile.
Boss Cheng is actually asking Bai Wan for Ji Ziyi’s whereabouts?
Yan Nanjue felt a bit awkward; she didn’t like performing for outsiders. “I don’t know where Ji Ziyi is, and I don’t care about your business,” she said bluntly, then pulled Bai Wan away.
Behind them, Cheng Lian almost crushed her wine glass. …Doesn’t know? She had clearly smelled a familiar pheromone scent on Yan Nanjue’s shoulder.
Back in the banquet hall, Yan Nanjue finally let go of Bai Wan’s hand. Her gaze held a faint threat. “Stay close to me. If I find you disappearing from my sight again, just you try me.”
Bai Wan lowered her eyes to avoid her gaze and coldly took her arm. Only then did the “all bark and no bite” scolding end.
Throughout the rest of the banquet, Yan Nanjue watched Bai Wan like a hawk, not letting her leave her sight for a moment. Cheng Lian left the party early, and Yan Nanjue didn’t see her again. She caught Chen Wanjun’s eye, and the latter shook her head slightly, indicating she knew nothing.
As the banquet reached its latter half, Yan Nanjue noticed someone had been stealing glances at them and immediately became alert. These parties were full of mixed crowds; it was when trouble happened most easily.
Sure enough, a woman in a long dress approached them holding a wine glass. She appeared to “accidentally” bump into a waiter near Bai Wan, staggering back as her glass tilted.
Yan Nanjue caught this in her peripheral vision. With lightning speed, she pulled Bai Wan back with one hand while using the other to shove the woman’s wrist away. The sound of the glass shattering on the floor drew everyone’s attention.
The woman stumbled and was barely held steady by the waiter. Wine was splashed all over her dress. She looked down and was about to explode in anger, but when she looked up and saw that the person in front of her wasn’t the “slum-born Omega” but the young Alpha CEO of the Yan Group, her curses died in her throat.
Yan Nanjue looked at her icily. The woman stammered in panic, “I’m sorry, President Yan, someone bumped into me…”
“Do I look like I’m senile?” Yan Nanjue countered. She had been watching Bai Wan’s every move; this person was clearly trying to pick a fight on purpose. Realizing the meaning behind the question, the woman shook her head, her face pale.
Nearby, the host Ming Yue noticed the scene and walked over. After learning what happened, her eyes turned cold. She looked at the angry Yan Nanjue, offered an apology, and then politely escorted the woman out. Ming Yue handled matters cleanly and decisively—a contrast to her gentle appearance.
It was just a minor interlude. Yan Nanjue’s expression softened slightly. Feeling a gaze on her, she instinctively looked up. Her eyes met Ming Yan’s over Ming Yue’s shoulder.
Realizing her peeking had been discovered, Ming Yan quickly looked away and hid behind her sister.
Huh? Ming Yan seems terrified of me? Yan Nanjue found it strange. She had flared up a bit, but she didn’t think she looked that scary.
Ming Yan hadn’t appeared in the book, so she wasn’t a major character. Yan Nanjue dismissed the thought, turning to find Bai Wan dazing out behind her. Bai Wan’s eyes were vacant, staring straight down at either her arm or the floor.
“Snap out of it, Mrs. Yan. Don’t embarrass me in a place like this,” Yan Nanjue whispered into her ear, squeezing her arm firmly. The latter’s lashes trembled as she looked up.
…Even Bai Wan hadn’t noticed the wine glass. Yan Nanjue’s reaction time had been faster than hers.
On the other side of the hall, Ming Yue reached out to check her sister’s forehead. “Are there too many people, Xiao Yan?” she asked gently. “If you really can’t handle this scene, don’t force yourself. Go home with the assistant first.”
Ming Yan clutched her arm and shook her head. “It’s not that…” She looked tentatively at her elder sister. “Sis, did you go over there just to help President Yan’s wife?”
As she spoke, her gaze drifted past Ming Yue toward the hall, shielded by her sister’s body.
“Since it happened at my event, I had to take a look,” Ming Yue explained patiently. But her sister clearly wasn’t listening, nodding absently with a distracted look plain on her face.
Ming Yue grew suspicious. She waited until the banquet ended and they were in a quiet spot before asking softly: “Xiao Yan, you seem to really dislike President Yan and her wife. You’ve told me to stay away from them several times. I’ve asked why, but you never tell me.”
Ming Yan bit her lip. “I won’t hurt you, Sis. Just… just stay away from their family.”
“Can you tell me why?” Ming Yue coaxed. “You can try to trust me.”
Ming Yan seemed to remember something; her face turned white, and she shook her head vigorously. “No special reason. It’s just that President Yan has a bad personality and treats her wife like that… and her wife… her wife’s personality…”
She couldn’t continue, biting her lip so hard a trace of blood appeared. Ming Yan’s eyes darted around. Suddenly, she grabbed Ming Yue’s arm. “You care about them so much—you haven’t fallen for President Yan’s wife, have you?!”
Ming Yue burst out laughing. “How could I fall for someone else’s wife?”
“Then why did you speak up for her before? And you even investigated her! I saw the files on your study desk. Don’t try to deny it, Ming Yue!”
Ming Yue patted her anxious sister’s head. “She looks a lot like you. Seeing her reminded me of you, so I wanted to help. As for the files, I just had people do a casual check. I was surprised to find she was in the same orphanage as you, with such a tragic background…”
“That’s still a no! You’re not allowed to meddle in their business, and don’t get involved in the relationship between Yan Nanjue and Bai Wan!”
Ming Yan’s voice rose in agitation. Realizing this might cause suspicion, she added hurriedly: “I just think President Yan is too cold-blooded. Treating her own wife like that… she must be a bad person. Yes, her character is bad.”
Ming Yue frowned slightly. “President Yan did do many bastardly things in the past, but she seems to have changed quite a bit lately. I heard she cares for Miss Bai quite a lot. I shouldn’t meddle in other people’s family matters, but President Yan is very protective of her. They likely aren’t in the state of misery people gossip about.”
“Cares? Protective?!!”
Ming Yan looked as if she had heard something impossible. She froze, instinctively denying those words in her heart, believing it was all a performance for outsiders. “Don’t change the subject! Anyway, you’re not allowed to meet Bai Wan alone, and don’t get close to her! Yan Nanjue is off-limits too!”
Ming Yue helplessly agreed.
Ming Yan’s lips moved slightly, her brow full of worry. Her faint whisper was carried away by the night wind, leaving no trace:
“That woman… she is a total lunatic…”
