After Becoming a Cannon Fodder Side Character, I Became the Group’s Favorite (GL) - Chapter 63
Xu Chacha practically held her breath while reading the email. After finishing it, she pinched her arm to confirm she wasn’t dreaming and nearly went crazy with excitement.
TY wanted to invite her to walk in their fashion show!
The company also had a branch in China, and the email was sent from the Chinese regional office. Xu Chacha checked the time; they shouldn’t have finished work yet. So, she dialed the number in the email. It rang twice and was picked up.
Xu Chacha introduced herself and stated her intention directly. The other person was surprised by her quick reply and seemed very interested in the collaboration, immediately setting up a time to discuss the details.
After hanging up, Xu Chacha immediately forwarded the news to Wen Mubai.
Jiang Panpan had taken on a new project for the studio, and they were all pulling all-nighters to rush the work. Xu Chacha’s message didn’t get an immediate reply.
It was almost dinner time when Wen Mubai finally responded, saying she knew, and that she would be home early tonight.
Xu Chacha sent a string of cute, pleading emojis, put her headphones back on, and returned to her computer to start writing.
Actually, if she hadn’t promised her editor to update every six months, she would have continued to procrastinate. But since she was earning money, she felt she needed some professional ethics. So, she was now scrambling to write, squeezing it out like water from a sponge in the last week before the deadline.
Wen Mubai had already completely exposed her secret identity. After learning about it, she even proactively offered up her study room.
Sitting surrounded by books to set the mood, and with noise-canceling headphones on, Xu Chacha was still at a loss for inspiration. After most of the day had passed, there were barely two lines of text on her screen.
She sighed, tossed her mouse aside, and picked up her phone to chat with Chen Qianqian and her friends in their group chat.
Xu Chacha: I’m going to die. I can’t write anything.
Chen Qianqian: Why don’t you watch some movies or read some novels to find inspiration?
Xu Chacha: That might be a way.
Chen Qianqian: Watching something stimulating can inspire you even more! Do you want me to send you something?
Xue Miaomiao: You stop it. Don’t lead Cha astray.
Xu Chacha: ?
Chen Qianqian ignored the advice and sent Xu Chacha some “gems” from her Baidu Cloud collection, urging her to read them quickly.
Xu Chacha opened one of them with suspicion. The explicit, unrestrained language that met her eyes nearly made her spit out the hot tea she was sipping onto the screen.
It was stimulating, alright, but the pace was too fast for her to keep up.
Xu Chacha: Thanks, but no. I’ll stick to watching movies.
She closed the chat window, opened her browser, pulled up the list of movies she had bookmarked and forgotten about, and started watching one.
The curtains in the study were drawn, and only a desk lamp was on, which helped her concentrate.
After watching the movie for less than half an hour, Xu Chacha felt the urge to write. She started typing away, completely immersed in her work.
When Wen Mubai returned, she didn’t see anyone in the living room and guessed Xu Chacha was still writing in the study. She went upstairs quietly, saw the girl deeply engrossed in writing on the computer, and chose not to disturb her.
It was past seven in the evening when Xu Chacha stretched and looked up from the document.
She moved the mouse to WeChat. Chen Qianqian had sent several more messages in the group chat.
Chen Qianqian: It’s insane. I swear I just stumbled upon it, but I can’t believe there’s a “masterpiece” like this. When I saw the protagonist’s name, I just froze, hahahaha, darn it!
A file immediately followed.
Xue Miaomiao: …
Xue Miaomiao: Suggest retracting the message.
Thinking of the kind of novels Chen Qianqian read, Xu Chacha shuddered and had no interest in clicking on the file.
She shifted her gaze and saw a plate of fruit on the corner of the table. Xu Chacha realized Wen Mubai was home. Her heart lifted, and she went downstairs.
Wen Mubai was sitting on the sofa reading a magazine. The evening news was on the TV, but the volume was off. Xu Chacha reached her arms around her neck from behind and buried her head. “You’re back.”
“Mhm,” Wen Mubai put down the magazine and asked softly, “Are you hungry?”
Xu Chacha rubbed her stomach. “A little.”
Although Wen Mubai had supervised her lunch, the long afternoon had completely used up the energy.
“The maid left sour-soup dumplings in the fridge. Want some?”
“Yes!”
Wen Mubai’s maid was a genuinely good cook. Under her feeding, Xu Chacha’s appetite had grown significantly.
“How many do you want?”
“Eight… No.” Xu Chacha recalled that the maid’s dumplings were about half the size of her fist, and they were served in soup. She thought for a moment and said, “Five, I guess. I should eat less at night.”
“Okay, you sit down then,” Wen Mubai stood up, pulling a blanket from the side and covering Xu Chacha’s head. “Cover up so you don’t catch a cold again.”
Xu Chacha often fell asleep on the sofa while watching TV. If she wasn’t covered, she was guaranteed to wake up with a chill. So, Wen Mubai instructed the maid to always keep a blanket on the sofa, all year round.
Just boiling the dumplings and adding the sour-soup base that the maid had prepared in advance was a task Wen Mubai managed quite well.
Xu Chacha turned her head back around after confirming she could handle it.
Well, as long as she doesn’t blow up the kitchen, my wife is still a good wife.
After cooking, Wen Mubai placed the bowl directly on the coffee table and gave Xu Chacha a spoon, allowing her to eat while watching TV.
“What about you?” Xu Chacha asked when she saw her about to leave. “Aren’t you eating?”
“There’s a document. Panpan is rushing me to look at it.” If there were any issues, she would have to revise it, so using the computer was more convenient.
“Will it take long? You should put yours in the microwave then, or it will get cold.”
“It should be quick. You eat first.”
“Then help me save and close the document.”
“Mhm, alright.”
Wen Mubai gently ruffled Xu Chacha’s hair and went upstairs.
Only about five minutes later, Xu Chacha’s phone vibrated.
Darling Wife: Come up
Xu Chacha replied with a question mark. The other side quickly sent a screenshot.
The content was a large block of utterly explicit, restricted-rated text, but the shocking part was that the protagonist’s name was “Wen Mubai”?
This time, Xu Chacha really choked, coughing until her face and neck were beet red.
She rushed upstairs in a hurry, and as she pulled open the door, she rushed to speak, her voice breathless from coughing. “It wasn’t me, it wasn’t me! It has nothing to do with me!”
Wen Mubai was calmer than she expected. “Take a breath and tell me slowly. I’m listening.”
Despite this, Xu Chacha stammered, her face red as a baboon’s behind. “This… this was sent to me by Chen Qianqian. I… I didn’t even read it!”
She remembered Chen Qianqian sending her a “masterpiece.” She must have accidentally clicked on it when she stood up, and the mouse slipped.
She never expected Wen Mubai to see it in such an embarrassing way.
In her whole life, across two lifetimes, she had never been so mortified!
Wen Mubai couldn’t possibly think this was what she had been writing all day!
If she couldn’t explain it, she would bang her head against the wall right now!
“Mhm, then why is it open?” Wen Mubai was probably asking casually, but Xu Chacha felt like she was being interrogated by a strict teacher.
Perhaps she was already feeling guilty. Her hands were clasped tightly behind her back, and her ears were burning red.
“I might have clicked on it by accident. I saw you were home and immediately went downstairs. I really… I really didn’t look at it once.”
“If I had known it was this kind of thing, I would have destroyed all evidence right away!”
“Oh,” Wen Mubai nodded thoughtfully. She then, in front of Xu Chacha, slid the mouse and scrutinized the text. After reading something, her lips curled up, and her tone was suggestive. “It’s a yuri novel too.”
“…” Save me. “If you don’t believe me, I’ll show you the chat history.”
Xu Chacha opened her phone and showed her the group chat history. “Chen Qianqian really sent it. I didn’t even have time to reply.”
Wen Mubai chuckled softly. “Why are you so worked up? I was just asking.”
“I was afraid you would misunderstand.”
“It’s fine. At your age…” Wen Mubai visually assessed her from head to toe. “It’s not surprising to read things like this.”
“I don’t read it!”
“Mhm, mhm.” Wen Mubai nodded, her tone soothing. “You don’t read it, you don’t read it.”
“I really don’t read it!” Xu Chacha was furious. She snatched the mouse, closed the document, and even cleared the chat history on the computer.
She thought the ordeal was over once the evidence was destroyed, but she didn’t realize the torment was far from finished.
That evening, both of them were already lying in bed.
Xu Chacha was racing against time, surfing the internet before eleven, planning to turn off her phone and go to sleep the moment the clock struck.
Just then, Chen Qianqian messaged her again.
Chen Qianqian: How was it?
Chen Qianqian: Insane, right?
Chen Qianqian: You haven’t replied. Are you completely engrossed?
Chen Qianqian: This is a treasure. I didn’t even dare to read it myself. I sent it to you first.
Just her luck, Wen Mubai was embracing Xu Chacha at that moment, and by slightly lowering her head, she could see the messages on her phone.
Xu Chacha heard the person above her laugh and quickly flipped the phone over, screen down, onto the pillow.
“Is it that funny?”
“It’s alright,” Wen Mubai actually answered seriously, though the amusement in her voice was impossible to hide. “The author’s writing style is actually pretty good. You could read it closely.”
“Read it closely? You want to read it closely?”
“You should still be able to open it on your phone.” Wen Mubai then picked up Xu Chacha’s phone, found the book in the history, and opened it. “It might be good as bedtime reading too.”
Darn it…
“If you want to read it, take it and read it yourself.”
“What’s wrong? I’m not even embarrassed, but you’re getting shy first.”
Xu Chacha shrunk her shoulders and mumbled, “You know you’re shameless.”
Wen Mubai casually flipped through a few pages and suddenly exclaimed, “Ooh, she’s the gong.”
“Who’s the gong?”
Wen Mubai pushed the phone toward her, her finger pointing at a… sex scene.
Xu Chacha didn’t know why, maybe she didn’t want to show weakness and lose to Wen Mubai, but she forced herself to read it, pretending to be calm despite her flushed face.
“The writing is just average,” she evaluated matter-of-factly. “But why are you on top?”
“Me?” Wen Mubai, close to her, let out a couple of soft laughs. She didn’t explain the latter part, but Xu Chacha filled it in herself.
Why did she say “you” when referring to the “Wen Mubai” in the novel? It was like she was substituting the real Wen Mubai into the story!
“Why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Retract,” Xu Chacha even imitated the “shoo” sound with her mouth. “A slip of the tongue.”
“But I already heard it.”
Wen Mubai turned off the screen. Her hand, at some point, had moved and was resting on Xu Chacha’s body. “Why is your heart beating so fast?”
“This… isn’t this… a normal reaction?” Her body was inexplicably hot, and her voice trembled at the end.
“Do you have a morning class tomorrow?”
“N-no.”
“Are you scared?” Wen Mubai lowered her head, her hot breath landing on the side of Xu Chacha’s neck. “Should we wait a little longer?”
“N-not scared.”
The person behind her gave a faint laugh. “Just tell me to stop if you’re scared.”
Xu Chacha’s breathing was suspended. She felt, deep down, that this person was a fox spirit who was too good at seducing people, and yet she was completely helpless against her.
“By the way, you like being on top, right?” Wen Mubai squeezed Xu Chacha’s waist, picked her up, and sat her on her lap. She looked down at her with a lazy posture. “It doesn’t make a difference, though.”
It doesn’t make a difference… to what?
Ah, she got it.
The bracelets on her wrists hadn’t been taken off, and the occasional clinking sound made Xu Chacha feel inexplicably shy.
