After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 41
By the time Ye Wanyin came back, it was already close to evening.
When she opened the door, Ye Wanyin was still a little nervous. She had originally promised Fang Shu that she would go and come right back. She had not expected herself to spend so long choosing.
After opening the door, Ye Wanyin looked inside. The living room lights were already on. Fang Shu was sitting on the chair in front of the table, the pen in her hand spinning quickly. When she heard the sound at the entrance, her movements remained neither hurried nor slow as she turned her head toward Ye Wanyin.
Seeing the expression on Fang Shu’s face, Ye Wanyin’s heart inexplicably gave a thud.
Fang Shu’s lips curved slightly. “You’re back.”
Ye Wanyin silently tightened her grip on the bag in her hand. She did not know whether it was because of the hot weather or Fang Shu’s expression, but a bead of sweat slid down her forehead uncontrollably.
Ye Wanyin gave a dry laugh, then changed her shoes and walked in. She placed one of the plastic bags in her hand in front of Fang Shu. “Sorry. Something delayed me for a while. This milk tea is compensation for you.”
Fang Shu looked at the milk tea in front of her, but her expression did not soften in the slightest. Instead, she spun the pen in her hand even more calmly and slowly. One circle after another. Only after Ye Wanyin’s heart had been thoroughly suspended did Fang Shu say very calmly, “I sent you several messages this afternoon.”
Ye Wanyin froze. “What messages?”
The pen in Fang Shu’s hand only paused for one second before continuing to spin. She did not seem to have any intention of drinking the milk tea either. With an extremely calm face, she said coldly, “Nothing.”
Ye Wanyin would be a ghost if she really believed her.
She took out her phone and checked her messages. This afternoon, she had either been hanging around in the newly created group chat or choosing a gift, so she had not noticed any other messages at all.
Only now did she realize that Fang Shu had sent her several messages. The first message had been sent an hour after she left, asking roughly what time she would be back. After waiting a long time without a reply, Fang Shu had sent a second message, asking where she was.
But at the time, Ye Wanyin had not noticed and had continued doing her own thing.
After that, Fang Shu’s messages became more frequent.
After Ye Wanyin finished reading the messages, the guilt in her heart deepened. “Sorry. I made you worry.”
Fang Shu gave a cold hum and turned her head aside.
Ye Wanyin thought for a moment, then understood. From the other plastic bag she had been carrying, she took out several sets of test papers and placed them in front of Fang Shu. “I didn’t look at my phone when I was out. I went to a few bookstores, and choosing test papers took a little long.”
Fang Shu did not even look at the test papers placed in front of her. Instead, she gave an even heavier cold snort.
Ye Wanyin thought for a long time but really could not find any other reason that would make Fang Shu angry. Thinking that Fang Shu might still need some time to digest it, she first put the plastic bag back in her own room. Inside were also several sets of practice papers she had bought for herself, so bringing it back to her room did not seem abrupt.
After coming out of her room, Ye Wanyin tied on an apron and went to the fridge. As she looked at what food was still left inside, she asked Fang Shu, “What do you want to eat tonight?”
Fang Shu restrained her tone and said coldly, “Hot and sour rice noodles, vinegar cabbage, sweet-and-sour fish…”
Ye Wanyin glanced into the fridge and gave an “uh.” “We don’t have those ingredients here…”
And she did not know how to make them either…
After all, Ye Wanyin was still a student. The dishes she had learned to make were all relatively simple. Boiling, stewing, and at most stir-frying a few easy side dishes was already her limit.
Fang Shu turned her head and saw that Ye Wanyin still looked like a wooden blockhead. Finally, she could not hold back anymore. “You didn’t have time to check your phone, but you had time to chat with other people.”
Ye Wanyin was startled and suddenly turned back to look at Fang Shu. She saw that Fang Shu had already dropped the calm expression from her face, and the sparks shooting out of her eyes looked as if they were about to burn Ye Wanyin to ashes.
Ye Wanyin still wanted to struggle a little. “Is there some misunderstanding here?”
Fang Shu stood up from the chair and walked step by step to her. When she pressed Ye Wanyin against the fridge, she even casually closed the fridge door.
The clothes in summer were thin. Ye Wanyin could clearly feel the cold touch when her back pressed against the fridge door, and the stimulation made her shiver involuntarily.
Sparks still burned in Fang Shu’s eyes. She took her phone out of her pajama pocket, opened a certain page, and placed it in front of Ye Wanyin. “If you were a man right now, I wouldn’t even have to think before labeling you a scumbag.”
The screen showed Fang Shu’s chat with a girl in class. Fang Shu had asked whether the girl could contact Ye Wanyin, followed by a question mark that made her look very surprised. The person on the other side seemed confused and said, Hasn’t Ye Wanyin been chatting with me the whole time?
Below that was a screenshot.
The screenshot only captured a short section of conversation. The first line was Ye Wanyin asking whether the other girl was there. The second line was the other girl replying that she was.
Ye Wanyin remembered.
This afternoon, after she had been pulled into that group, she had participated in the discussion for a while as she shopped around. Later, when she did not know what to give, she had asked a few girls in the group for their opinions.
Seeing Ye Wanyin fall silent, the fire in Fang Shu’s eyes clearly burned even hotter. However, she still said with an expression that seemed to be giving Ye Wanyin a chance to explain, “Go on.”
A birthday gift was supposed to be a surprise. She temporarily could not tell Fang Shu.
So Ye Wanyin could only say, “It’s not that I deliberately didn’t reply to your messages. It’s because there was something… mm, something a little difficult to handle, and I can’t tell you yet.”
Fang Shu took another step forward and looked at Ye Wanyin. “You can’t tell me?”
Ye Wanyin nodded. “I can’t tell you.”
Fang Shu stared into her eyes, as if trying to determine whether she was lying.
Regarding this, Ye Wanyin was very calm. Earlier, she had intended to hide it, so when Fang Shu suddenly questioned her, she had not been able to respond properly. Now that she had confessed this much, her guard had dropped, and the look she gave Fang Shu became much more sincere.
Fang Shu seemed to confirm it. She took a few steps back.
However, although the fire in her eyes had died down somewhat, her expression still carried a bit of anger. “Although I believe you now, I’m still very angry.”
Ye Wanyin looked at the milk tea on the table behind her. “Will drinking the milk tea make it better?”
Fang Shu seemed to suppress the remaining anger and took a deep breath. “No.”
Because Fang Shu was still blocking her, Ye Wanyin could only barely turn sideways. She pulled open the fridge door by a tiny crack. “Then should I make you a dish that I know how to make and that we also have ingredients for in the fridge?”
Fang Shu’s brows furrowed slightly. “Do I look like I love eating that much?”
Ye Wanyin thought of the questions she had asked today about Fang Shu’s preferences, then thought of the original mission at the beginning of this instance world. She tested, “Then should I help you look for a few good boys?”
Hearing this, Fang Shu’s brows furrowed even tighter. She immediately fixed her gaze on Ye Wanyin. This time, her expression looked somewhat unpleasant. “Do I look like someone who would two-time?”
Ye Wanyin had never expected this reaction from her and quickly waved her hands. “You don’t. But if you really meet someone you like, you can tell me…”
Originally, Fang Shu had taken a step back and created a bit of distance between herself and Ye Wanyin. But the moment she heard Ye Wanyin’s words, she stepped forward again.
Then she lowered her head and glanced at the distance between their toes. She took another step and completely erased the tiny gap between them.
Ye Wanyin only felt that the sensation of Fang Shu pressing close was strange, but she still did not think in any other direction.
She looked at Fang Shu and was thinking about what method could calm her down when she suddenly heard Fang Shu lower her voice and say, “Although I have many exes, I was serious about every relationship.”
At first, Ye Wanyin did not realize something was wrong. She only felt that this sentence sounded very familiar, as if it had once come from her own mouth.
At this moment, countless novels floated through Fang Shu’s mind. Some kissed after confirming their feelings, while others kissed first and confirmed their feelings afterward. In short, no relationship had one fixed model.
Fang Shu felt that she really had been trapped by a frame before.
She had set every relationship of hers into a fixed romance template. As long as the other person did even one thing that did not fit the rules in her heart, she would peacefully break up with them. Although this relationship with Ye Wanyin had given her extra tolerance because of the gender difference at the beginning, every step had still actually been walking within the template she had planned.
Her heart had moved, so she wanted to first wait for the other person’s heart to move too. She wanted to wait until both of them liked each other, wait until they had completely stabilized this relationship, and only then consider taking the next step of contact.
But right now, what she most wanted to do was clearly…
Fang Shu raised her head. The sparks in her eyes had already cooled, and what remained was a color Ye Wanyin could not quite see through.
Ye Wanyin heard Fang Shu say, “In that novel you read, although it was full of mistakes and omissions, at least one sentence was right.”
“I’m not serious about studying. I’m not very interested in friends. But when it comes to love, I have an unusual obsession.”
“It’s true that I’m love-brained.”
Ye Wanyin looked at Fang Shu with some incomprehension. She seemed to understand every sentence Fang Shu said. But under the current circumstances, hearing them in her ears brought a strange impact that made her legs tremble.
It was as if something was gradually slipping out of control.
Fang Shu placed one hand on the fridge door. As she looked at Ye Wanyin, she quietly lifted her heels slightly. She said to Ye Wanyin, “Before, I kept making a fuss for you to fulfill your obligations as my lover, but in reality, there weren’t that many you truly fulfilled. I should still have the right to ask you to fulfill obligations between lovers, right?”
Originally, Ye Wanyin did not mind this. But for some reason, what came out of her mouth was, “If I don’t let you fulfill them, will you stop studying properly in the future?”
Fang Shu looked at Ye Wanyin and suddenly asked in return, “If I don’t study properly, will you give up on me?”
Ye Wanyin did not hesitate at all. “Of course not.”
Fang Shu still looked at her, as if waiting for the answer to another question.
Ye Wanyin wanted to adjust her glasses a little, but she felt that in this atmosphere where both of them were a little nervous, adjusting her glasses would not be very appropriate. So she endured as her glasses slid down the bridge of her nose until they lightly rested on the tip. She stared at a bead of sweat sliding down from the bridge of her nose and said, “We’re currently in the role of lovers, so you have the right to ask me to fulfill obligations.”
She had been the one who had forcefully dragged Fang Shu into studying in the beginning. Later, she had also promised Fang Shu’s family that she would tutor Fang Shu properly. And the premise behind all of this was that she and Fang Shu were still lovers.
Because they were lovers, the other party had fulfilled her own obligations.
Calculating it this way, Ye Wanyin suddenly felt that the version of herself from a few days ago, who had rejected Fang Shu’s inch-by-inch advances, had been somewhat unreasonable.
Fang Shu rose slightly onto her toes, and so she saw the expression in Ye Wanyin’s eyes clearly. She saw the wavering in Ye Wanyin’s eyes and also saw Ye Wanyin’s concession.
Fang Shu could not help tightening her palm. Her toes lifted and lowered, lifted and lowered, while her gaze remained fixed on Ye Wanyin.
“Then can I kiss you?”
