After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 6
“By the way, what’s your name?” The two of them each carried their schoolbags as they walked side by side on the way back. Ye Wanyin relaxed for a moment and could not help asking.
Only when she saw the girl looking at her in surprise did Ye Wanyin realize she had asked a stupid question.
Fortunately, the girl did not think too much of it. She only scratched her cheek and smiled at her a little unnaturally.
“My name is Meng Meng. I’m not very noticeable in class, so it’s normal that you don’t remember me.”
Still, they had been classmates for more than a year and a half, yet Ye Wanyin did not even know her name. That was somewhat awkward.
“By the way, you really changed a lot today. A lot of people in class didn’t recognize you.” They had just left the school gate, and there was still some distance before they got home. Meng Meng brought up a topic to cover up the awkward atmosphere from earlier.
Ye Wanyin smiled. Of course they couldn’t recognize her. After all, she had only entered this world three days ago.
Her expression was natural. “Maybe it’s because I wasn’t very noticeable before either.”
“Not at all…” Meng Meng instinctively wanted to deny it, but before she finished speaking, she remembered what Ye Wanyin had been like before.
In her impression, Ye Wanyin had always followed behind Fang Shu, wearing ordinary black-framed glasses. Aside from everyone knowing that she was a top student, she did not have any other distinguishing features.
But today, when she appeared at the classroom door with Fang Shu, everyone’s eyes were no longer directed at Fang Shu. Instead, they were directed at the person beside Fang Shu.
It was not because Ye Wanyin was astonishingly beautiful. After all, purely in terms of looks, Fang Shu beside her was already beautiful enough. The key was the contrast between then and now. The Ye Wanyin from before was like someone whose face had been covered in mosaic, plain and ordinary when walking on the street, attracting no attention at all.
But now, her outline was clear and her features were distinct. Although she still wore the same old-fashioned school uniform and tied the same ordinary high ponytail as before, the feeling she gave off was suddenly different.
It was as if she had changed from a campus passerby into someone’s first love on campus.
Meng Meng had been sitting relatively close at the time, so the visual impact she received was also the strongest. To be honest, her first reaction at the time was not, How did Ye Wanyin change so much? but rather, When did the person beside Fang Shu get replaced?
Thinking of this, Meng Meng could not help smiling at Ye Wanyin in embarrassment.
“Honestly, you really changed a lot. Today, a lot of people in our class were wondering if you’d been swapped with someone else.”
Ye Wanyin also smiled. In her heart, she thought, This isn’t being swapped. This is being created out of nothing.
When they were almost at the entrance of the residential compound where Ye Wanyin lived, the two said good night and parted ways. After that, Ye Wanyin turned and walked toward the plaza across from the compound.
Although she had no way to go back for the time being, Ye Wanyin still remembered that in reality, there was only one hour left before her college entrance exam.
During this period, she still had to review properly. Otherwise, if she entered the exam hall later and found that she remembered barely any of the question types, that would be very awkward.
After buying several college entrance exam question banks and a few simple study guides all at once, Ye Wanyin sadly discovered that she seemed to be running out of money.
She had no phone, could not find any other hidden allowance money in her room, and could not find the system either. Ye Wanyin could not help sighing. It seemed she had to find time to get a part-time job.
When she got home, it was already past nine. Ye Wanyin was surprised to find that the living room light was actually on. However, Fang Shu was not there. She had probably gone back to her own room.
Ye Wanyin changed her shoes, picked up the two plastic bags placed by the entrance, and walked in. When she passed by Fang Shu’s door, Ye Wanyin looked at one of the bags in her hand and hesitated over whether to knock.
After being shut out for two days in a row, she felt a little afraid.
But before she could finish feeling afraid, the door in front of her opened. Fang Shu appeared with her half-dry hair, wearing a nightdress. When she saw the person standing at the door, she froze slightly, then said with faint disdain,
“You came back so slowly.”
Ye Wanyin smiled awkwardly at her. She had not expected Fang Shu to come back earlier than her.
Fang Shu tilted her head toward the living room and said to Ye Wanyin, “There’s milk tea and cake on the table. I brought them for you.”
After saying that, she did not care about Ye Wanyin’s reaction and turned around, intending to close the door.
Ye Wanyin called out to stop her from behind and said with some emotion, “Thank you. Right, I also bought you something.”
“Baby, who is it?”
Ye Wanyin froze.
Fang Shu frowned.
The voice had come from inside the room. It was also a male voice.
At that moment, Ye Wanyin almost looked at Fang Shu in horror.
Fang Shu’s already-furrowed brows tightened even more when she saw Ye Wanyin’s expression. With a face that said, What are you thinking? she took her phone from the room, then said to the person on the other end of the call,
“I told you not to call me that in such a disgusting way.”
“Isn’t this how everyone dates?” the person on the other end said with a laugh.
Ye Wanyin instinctively felt that something was not quite right, but for a moment, she could not remember what it was. She only heard Fang Shu say in an extremely cold tone,
“Let’s break up.”
The person on the other end probably realized that Fang Shu was genuinely angry and hurriedly surrendered.
“Sorry, I was wrong, I was wrong. I won’t say it like that anymore.”
Fang Shu gave a hum. “I have something to do. Hanging up.”
Then she leaned against the door like a lord, arms crossed over her chest, staring at Ye Wanyin, waiting to see what she could take out.
Ye Wanyin came back to herself from her surprise earlier. Sensibly, she did not mention what had just happened. She handed over the bag in her right hand.
Fang Shu glanced at it, then looked at Ye Wanyin. Her eyes gradually narrowed, and from the inside out, she exuded an aura that said, Do you want to die?
Ye Wanyin worked hard to smile very sincerely, but the person in front of her still shoved the bag back into her arms and slammed the door shut in front of her.
Ye Wanyin trembled from the heavy, muffled sound of the door closing and almost developed psychological trauma.
After hitting another wall, Ye Wanyin had no choice but to tidy up and carry both bags back to her own room. Then she returned to the living room.
The milk tea and cake on the table were very eye-catching, each packed in a separate takeout bag. The small cake had even been thoughtfully wrapped.
Ye Wanyin finished the small cake in the living room. She planned to take the milk tea back to her room and drink it while doing homework.
When she passed Fang Shu’s room, Ye Wanyin knocked on the door. After a while, Fang Shu came out from inside. Her anger probably had not faded yet, because her expression still looked difficult to provoke.
Ye Wanyin said to her seriously, “Thank you.”
The anger on Fang Shu’s face faded slightly. Then she gave a light snort. “Who told you to be my…”
At this point, Fang Shu got slightly stuck. Her expression was also rather unnatural as she glanced at Ye Wanyin.
Ye Wanyin could probably guess the two words Fang Shu had not said. Her expression also became a little unnatural. In the end, the two of them fell into a strange silence together.
Saying they were best friends really felt like a dream.
The next day, Ye Wanyin called Fang Shu to get up as usual.
Tuesday morning reading was English. Naturally, the English teacher did not come. Ye Wanyin had originally been worried that Fang Shu would go wild playing, but she discovered that this person had unexpectedly taken out her English textbook.
Fang Shu’s textbook was cleaner than her face. If someone took it out and said it was brand new, people would believe them.
After a while, Ye Wanyin understood why Fang Shu was being so self-aware today. It was because their homeroom teacher had come.
When the homeroom teacher came, she did so silently. First, she peeked in through the back window. After seeing who was not seriously memorizing words, she pushed open the back door and caught those students who were openly chatting on the spot.
The commotion was not small and drew many students in the front seats to watch. After various verbal and behavioral reminders, almost everyone in the class discovered the homeroom teacher’s presence. Those who had not been seriously doing morning reading quickly held up their textbooks and put on an act.
Ye Wanyin saw that wherever the homeroom teacher passed, the voices became louder one after another. For some reason, she found it a little funny.
As for Fang Shu, she was still like usual, murmuring like a mosquito. Only after the homeroom teacher knocked on her desk did she reluctantly raise her voice a little.
Ye Wanyin sat beside her. After Fang Shu’s voice grew louder, Ye Wanyin could hear what she was reading.
At the very least, her pronunciation was very standard.
Unfortunately, she did not read for long. As soon as the homeroom teacher left, Fang Shu was too lazy to even read.
And after the homeroom teacher’s movements had been exposed, Fang Shu even picked up her phone. She propped her face on one arm, moving her mouth silently in a perfect imitation of someone “seriously memorizing.”
Every time the homeroom teacher was about to come over, she would put away her phone in advance, then maintain the same posture and slightly raise her voice.
This made the homeroom teacher always feel that something was wrong with her, but she could not find where the problem was.
Ye Wanyin passed Fang Shu a little note.
Your English speaking is pretty good. If you study properly, you can do well.
When Fang Shu saw the content of the note, her expression paused subtly. Then she wrote a few words.
You’re so greasy.
Ye Wanyin: “…”
What had she done?!
I don’t know how many ex-boyfriends ago, but one of them said the same thing when he tried to get me to apply to the same university as him.
When Ye Wanyin received a note that Fang Shu had passed over on her own initiative, she felt slightly flattered. But when she saw the content, her expression calmed down again.
She knew it.
Ye Wanyin held her pen and wrote a few words as if hammering nails.
I’m straight.
Me too.
Isn’t getting into university good? If you get in, you’ll have one more choice for your future path.
Annoying.
After Fang Shu wrote this word, she no longer paid attention to Ye Wanyin. She probably truly felt annoyed.
When Ye Wanyin saw that the first class on the timetable was English, she had a bad feeling. Sure enough, this time Fang Shu did not even pretend. She did not even open her textbook and directly lay her phone out to play.
Ye Wanyin poked her. “At least listen a little.”
Fang Shu swept her a glance, switched arms to prop up her chin, and played with her back directly facing Ye Wanyin.
Ye Wanyin: “…”
After class, Ye Wanyin showed her the homework the teacher had assigned. Fang Shu stuck her hands in her pockets and walked away without looking back.
“Show it to my English book. I’m going on a date.”
Ye Wanyin comforted herself. This was only the fifth day.
But when she saw that Fang Shu had already been gone for a long time, while the boy on the far left still had not moved at all, she felt a little strange. If her boyfriend was not there, who was Fang Shu going on a date with?
The progressless day reached noon. Fang Shu had already told Ye Wanyin that they would not eat together, so Fang Shu left early today.
Ye Wanyin also waited until she had finished organizing her things as usual before leaving.
When she arrived at the cafeteria, the line was extremely long. Ye Wanyin stood at the back of the line, unable to see the front. While thinking in her mind about the answer to a question she had seen that morning, she slowly moved forward with the line.
Suddenly, a cry of surprise came from the front of the line. Ye Wanyin’s gaze was also drawn over.
She saw Fang Shu holding a tray, stopped by her boyfriend. She did not know whether the two of them were arguing, but both of their expressions looked rather bad.
The people around them watched the drama while getting their meals, clearly not planning to get involved.
Standing behind them, Ye Wanyin could not clearly see the expression of the boy whose back was facing her. She could only hear that his voice sounded like someone who had fallen out of love, pitiful and aggrieved.
“Fang Shu, why can’t you agree to me?”
Another wave of exclamations came from the surroundings. Ye Wanyin saw Fang Shu’s expression instantly turn cold. Her brows furrowed so tightly they could crush a fly, and her tone was also extremely impatient.
“I already said I don’t like you.”
Now that she was closer, Ye Wanyin saw that the boy who had always blushed strangely yesterday had a terrifyingly pale face at this moment. Even though he stood there a head taller than Fang Shu, his aura was like that of a fallen puppy.
Ye Wanyin heard him say, “Then do you like him?”
The surroundings erupted again.
So this was not just a story between two people.
Fang Shu no longer wanted to deal with him. She tried to walk around him and leave, but the other party insisted on blocking her. Fang Shu glanced around.
“Do you have to say this here?”
Hearing her words, the boy hesitated and looked around. Then, perhaps because he received encouragement from someone, he turned back and said firmly,
“Right here.”
Fang Shu had been holding her tray the whole time and was getting a little tired. She simply placed the tray on the table beside her and leaned her waist against it.
“At least I don’t hate him.”
“Then why can’t you agree to me?” The boy’s expression suddenly became aggrieved. “If you don’t like either of us anyway, isn’t agreeing to me the same?”
Fang Shu sneered. “The same? Who gave you the face to think you’re the same?”
Before the boy could react, Fang Shu spoke without mercy.
“The kind of person I hate the most is someone who flatters himself and thinks he’s clever.”
The boy’s face suddenly turned white.
But Fang Shu had not finished speaking.
“I never dated you before. I won’t date you now. And I’ll be even less likely to date you in the future.”
“If you think your sincere heart has nowhere to go, then either keep it to yourself and don’t take it out, or throw it in the trash can. In any case, don’t embarrass yourself in front of me.”
There was an uproar all around.
Some people felt that Fang Shu’s words were too hurtful, while others focused on a different point.
“Didn’t people say they were dating before?”
“Damn it, who spread that fake news? I thought someone got ahead of me, so I never dared to make a move.”
“But they really did look a little off before.”
“Mm… wasn’t it only that guy who was acting off?”
…
The boy’s face alternated between blue and white, and his eyes reddened.
“How can you say something so awful?”
Fang Shu did not speak, but the faintly nauseated expression on her face had already shown her attitude.
If the boy still intended to keep pestering her, she could say even harsher things.
In the end, the boy was the first to be unable to bear it and left.
After being put through this, Fang Shu had lost her appetite too. When she finished dumping out her food, her current boyfriend finally hurried over. When he saw Fang Shu, he had just raised a smile when Fang Shu handed him the remaining anger from the ordeal.
“Why don’t you just come next year?”
Boyfriend: “???”
What did I do???
But as long as she was not saying they should break up, everything else could be discussed. Fang Shu’s boyfriend did not even get food and hurriedly chased after her to coax her.
Ye Wanyin sat in the corner, feeling that she had taken in a little too much information today.
The person she thought was Fang Shu’s boyfriend turned out not to be her boyfriend. The Fang Shu she thought dated anyone who came along actually had everything clear in her heart all along.
She finally remembered why she had felt that Fang Shu’s boyfriend’s voice sounded strange last night. That voice did not sound like something that boy who blushed every day could make at all!
When she returned to the classroom, everyone who should have been taking a lunch nap was now gathered in twos and threes. Those who knew were explaining the gossip to those who did not, and everyone’s face carried an expression of surprise.
It was only when the boy who was one of the subjects of the gossip returned that the noise in the class grew a little quieter. Within a four-seat radius centered around the boy’s seat, there was no one at all. Everyone had gone to the other side to continue gossiping.
Meanwhile, several of the boy’s close friends gathered around to comfort him.
Fang Shu was escorted back by her boyfriend. As she sat down, her boyfriend placed a big bag of snacks on her desk and said to her,
“Then I’m leaving?”
Fang Shu nodded.
After her boyfriend left, the two boys in the back seat immediately leaned over. One said regretfully, “If I’d known you two had nothing going on, I would’ve made a move myself.”
The other first shoved the first boy’s head. “I haven’t even made a move yet. When would it be your turn?”
Then he asked Fang Shu with a gossipy expression, “Wasn’t that guy just now a first-year sports student? I heard he has a lot of admirers. Are you two really together?”
Fang Shu nodded. She opened the bag in front of her and first pushed it in front of Ye Wanyin, letting her choose what she liked. Only then did she share the rest.
The boy behind them accepted a snack. While opening it, he gave Fang Shu a thumbs-up.
“This round counts as the peak battle between the sea king and sea queen, right?”
Fang Shu ignored him.
But he was enjoying himself and even started making bets with the other students who came over, betting on whether the two of them would make it to the end.
Ye Wanyin bit into a potato chip and leaned closer to Fang Shu.
“Even if you’re dating, you need grades to support it, right? If your grades aren’t good, how will you go to the same university as the person you like?”
Fang Shu did not take the bait at all. “I don’t need that right now.”
Ye Wanyin refused to give up. “There’s always the future. What if, someday, you fall for a top student?”
Fang Shu: “Then we’ll talk about it when that happens.”
Ye Wanyin: “…”
Maybe she should just give up and wait to be automatically removed from the instance.
