After Divorcing the Beautiful Richest Woman, She Fell in Love (GL) - Chapter 32
Upon hearing the news that Jian Xiyan was awake, Yu Shuyi and Jian Shenyao moved toward her simultaneously. Initially, Yu Shuyi was closer to the bed, but Jian Shenyao—with his long legs and urgent stride—reached her first.
Jian Xiaomin’s tears fell even harder. Her left hand hovered in the air, unsure of where to place it. She didn’t dare touch her sister, yet she couldn’t pull herself away.
Jian Shenyao asked with concern, “Xiyan, how are you feeling?”
Jian Xiyan blinked tiredly and with great effort, barely moving her lips to whisper: “Okay.”
Her voice was raspy to a degree the Jian family had never heard before—a level of misery that made Lin Feiruo feel a pang of sorrow standing by.
Jian Xiyan’s hand did not move away. Lin Feiruo looked down twice, confirming that Xiyan wasn’t grasping at her unconsciously; it was a deliberate choice.
Lin Feiruo was puzzled. Although the original owner and Jian Xiyan had been a fake couple for two years, they didn’t have deep personal feelings. Why would Xiyan grab her hand the moment she woke up?
Lin Feiruo decided to stay steady and observe the situation before deciding how to react.
Yu Shuyi, seeing that Jian Xiyan could hear and respond, realized she was truly awake and turned to call the doctor.
Jian Shenyao wanted to say something, but after looking at her condition, he ended up only letting out a sigh. “Rest and recover. The doctor said your leg is immobilized for now, but as long as you recover well, there won’t be any issues.”
Jian Xiyan blinked again and gave a low hum of acknowledgement.
Looking at her, Lin Feiruo couldn’t help but feel she was a bit too calm. Was she not fully awake, or was she dissociating due to post-traumatic stress?
Regardless, she couldn’t ask blunt questions—it would be too easy to trigger her. She could only ask softly, “Are you uncomfortable anywhere?”
Jian Xiyan tried to shake her head, but it was clearly difficult. Lin Feiruo quickly stopped her. “Okay, I understand. Don’t move around.”
Her voice remained low, which sounded like gentle whispering to the others in the room.
Jian Shenyao still harbored resentment over her previous absence, but since Xiyan had just woken up, he didn’t want to cause a scene in the ward.
The doctor and nurse entered the room. Yu Shuyi stepped forward and pushed Jian Xiaomin back. “Xiaomin, let the doctor examine her first. Be a good girl.”
Lin Feiruo also instinctively stepped back a few paces. When she pulled her hand away, she noticed Jian Xiyan’s fingertips twitch upwards several times.
The doctor performed a preliminary check and was satisfied with the post-op condition. “She’s stable for now, but the patient is still weak and needs rest. It’s best not to disturb her too much.”
Yu Shuyi took the opportunity to persuade her daughter to go rest, as she was a patient herself.
Jian Shenyao’s phone rang again. Before heading out to answer it, he threw a line at Lin Feiruo: “Don’t go running off again. Stay here and look after Xiyan.”
Jian Xiaomin finally spoke, her voice sounding just as hoarse as her sister’s. “Mom, let me say one word to Sis.” She looked up, her eyes filled with nothing but grief and pleading.
Yu Shuyi’s heart ached. With reddened eyes, she pushed the wheelchair back to the bedside.
Seeing her sister approach, Jian Xiyan tried to curve her lips, giving her a small, comforting smile.
Xiaomin still didn’t dare touch her, choking out: “Sis, you have to get better. You have to be healthy!”
“Mm.” This was the clearest response Jian Xiyan had given since waking up.
She saw Xiaomin’s injuries and looked at Yu Shuyi with great effort. “Second Aunt…”
“I know what you’re worried about. I’ll keep an eye on Xiaomin. You just focus on recovering; both of you need to be well.”
Jian Xiyan finally closed her eyes in peace; she was indeed exhausted.
After Yu Shuyi took Xiaomin away and the nurse finished changing the IV drip, Lin Feiruo was the only one left in the ward.
Jian Xiyan appeared to be asleep. Lin Feiruo walked closer, intending to tuck in the corner of the blanket. Suddenly, her hand was grabbed again, slightly more firmly than before.
“My injuries…” Jian Xiyan opened her eyes again, seemingly forcing herself to stay conscious.
“The doctor said as long as you recover well, there won’t be any permanent damage.” Lin Feiruo thought she was worried the doctors were hiding the truth.
Jian Xiyan tried to shake her head again, but Lin Feiruo stopped her. “Don’t move!”
She came up with a system: “If you agree, say ‘mm.’ If you don’t agree, say ‘mm-mm.’ That way I’ll understand.”
Jian Xiyan stared at her steadily.
“Okay?”
“Mm.”
Jian Xiyan was incredibly docile now, stripped of her usual coldness and distance, like a fragile kitten. Lin Feiruo felt it was wrong to think of a patient this way, but Xiyan’s current state inspired so much pity that she couldn’t help but soften her own tone.
“Then we’ll communicate like this for now,” Lin Feiruo leaned over, emphasizing with a smile. “I’ll do the talking, you do the listening.”
Jian Xiyan blinked but didn’t say anything.
Lin Feiruo raised an eyebrow and asked intentionally, “Mm?”
Jian Xiyan was forced to hum, “Mm.”
Just then, the door pushed open again. Lin Feiruo turned to see Jian Shenyao returning. Simultaneously, she felt her hand being squeezed tightly.
She looked at Jian Xiyan, but the look in the other woman’s eyes was hard to decipher. If it were terror or a plea for help, she wouldn’t be so confused. But the look Xiyan gave her was one of consultation or hope. Why?
Jian Shenyao also looked weary. “The company has issued a statement, and the driver is being held for investigation. I’ll let you know if there’s any news.”
“Thank you, Second Uncle.”
“We’re family, no need for that.”
Jian Shenyao shifted his gaze to Lin Feiruo, his tone noticeably harsher. “Feiruo, I have some things I want to talk to you about.”
At that moment, Lin Feiruo’s hand was squeezed even harder. A flash of insight hit her—she guessed what Jian Xiyan was trying to do.
By now, Jian Shenyao was at the door, holding the handle and waiting for her.
Lin Feiruo leaned down close to Jian Xiyan’s ear: “I know what you’re worried about. I won’t let the secret slip.”
After saying that, she specifically looked at Jian Xiyan. Sure enough, her expression changed; she stared at her intensely, as if trying to discern if Lin Feiruo had actually guessed correctly.
Lin Feiruo comforted her: “The three months aren’t up yet. I remember.”
Hearing this, Jian Xiyan finally relaxed, and her grip slowly loosened. Lin Feiruo placed her hand back under the blanket before walking to the door. Jian Shenyao saw all of this, and his dissatisfaction lessened slightly.
Jian Shenyao led Lin Feiruo a distance away to ensure the conversation wouldn’t disturb Xiyan.
“Feiruo, I don’t want to argue at a time like this, but can you explain to me why you couldn’t be reached for so long after Xiyan’s accident? What exactly was going on?”
Lin Feiruo knew Jian Shenyao had likely already checked her whereabouts, and besides, there was no hiding it. “I attended a wellness salon. The venue required phones to be turned off, so I turned it off when I entered.”
Jian Shenyao’s expression didn’t change; he obviously already knew. He seemed relatively satisfied with her honest attitude.
“Xiyan is seriously injured. Pull yourself together during this time and stay by her side as much as possible.”
“I know.”
Jian Shenyao’s phone rang again. He pressed his temples and signaled for Lin Feiruo to go back to the ward while he answered the call and walked toward the hospital exit. Lin Feiruo vaguely heard him say, “President Bu…”
Returning to the ward, Lin Feiruo found Jian Xiyan was asleep. This time she was truly out; Lin Feiruo stood by the bed and watched her for quite a while, and Xiyan didn’t react.
Lin Feiruo checked everything over and finally felt at peace enough to sleep on the empty bed nearby.
In the middle of the night, a nurse came in to change the medication. Lin Feiruo woke up groggily. The anesthesia had completely worn off; Jian Xiyan was letting out occasional muffled groans but trying her best to endure. It was a heart-wrenching sight.
The next day, Jian Xiyan’s spirits were a bit better. Lin Feiruo held a cup, preparing to feed her water. But Xiyan wasn’t in a hurry to drink; her expression clearly said she wanted to know about yesterday’s situation.
“Drink your water like a good girl first. Once you’re done, I’ll tell you.”
Lin Feiruo was surprised to find herself starting to use a bit of leverage. A flash of surprise crossed Jian Xiyan’s face.
“Drinking water is good for your body. Hurry up.” While she nudged her with words, she was very gentle with the spoon. It was clear she took Xiyan’s injuries very seriously.
Jian Xiyan took a few slow sips and intended to stop.
“Too little. Have some more.”
After a few more sips, Lin Feiruo used a wet wipe to dab the corner of her mouth. “I know what you’re worried about. Although my abilities are limited, I’m willing to help with whatever I can.”
Jian Xiyan was silent for a moment before speaking: “Thank you.”
She had rested for a night, and after drinking half a cup of water, her energy and voice were much better than yesterday. But that “thank you” was spoken with a tremor; Lin Feiruo could hear the sense of powerlessness in it. For someone used to being strong, that feeling of helplessness inevitably surfaces when they are forced to ask for help.
When Jian Shenyao arrived, Lin Feiruo was pouring soup sent by Aunt Shu. Shu Wanxia had wanted to come last night, but Jian Shenyao told her not to add to the chaos, so she had spent an agonizing night at He Garden.
Jian Xiyan took the initiative to ask, “Second Uncle, is there any new information?”
“The overnight interrogation is over. The driver had been unemployed for several months, his house was facing foreclosure, he was under immense pressure and full of resentment. He wanted to take people down with him and specifically looked for a crowded area.”
Jian Xiyan lowered her gaze, thinking of something. Lin Feiruo felt it was a bit far-fetched—there were a lot of people there, but why specifically charge at the sisters?
Jian Shenyao added, “The driver said he didn’t know you or Xiaomin. He just saw that you were young, beautiful, and rich, and his heart felt even more unbalanced.”
That’s twisted, Lin Feiruo thought. Jian Xiyan was so unlucky—just out for dinner and a stroll, and she nearly lost her life.
Jian Xiyan remained silent. Jian Shenyao comforted her: “This matter won’t just be let go. Don’t worry, Xiyan. Second Uncle will definitely keep investigating until it’s clear.”
Drunk driving is possible, and psychological imbalance exists, but for everything to coincide so perfectly and for him to hit Jian Xiyan directly made “pure accident” hard to believe. Jian Xiyan didn’t believe it, and Jian Shenyao didn’t believe it either. But with the driver in custody and inaccessible, he had to wait for his people to gather information before making the next move.
Jian Xiyan looked up, but the topic shifted. “I originally had a dinner with Director He tonight. That appointment took a long time to set; it’s a pity to miss it. Second Uncle, please help me explain.”
Jian Shenyao sighed. “Xiyan, set the company matters aside for now. I won’t ignore them. Your most important task right now is to recover. If later…” He didn’t want to mention the doctor’s warnings about permanent damage in front of her. Even if Xiyan said she was fine, she surely didn’t think so in her heart.
Unexpectedly, Jian Xiyan made her own request: “Can you ask Dr. Jiang to come by? I have some things I want to ask him in person.”
Dr. Jiang Bingde was called to the ward. Jian Xiyan looked at him calmly. “Dr. Jiang, please describe my injuries again. Thank you.”
“This…” Dr. Jiang glanced at Jian Shenyao. “I already explained it to the family yesterday. Actually…”
“I want to understand it for myself.”
Lin Feiruo felt Jian Xiyan was terrifyingly calm. Her leg was wrapped like that, and she was in so much pain last night—was it not clear enough how serious it was? To be able to inquire so rationally now, her emotional stability was unlike any patient, or even a patient’s family member.
Dr. Jiang had no choice but to repeat what he had said outside the operating room. Lin Feiruo’s brow twitched as she listened, but Jian Xiyan remained calm throughout. Her expression barely changed, though her occasional questions about details proved she was listening intently.
Dr. Jiang finished, emphasizing: “Sometimes we don’t tell the patient too much for fear of the mental burden affecting recovery, but you are an exception. So as long as you focus on your recovery, there won’t be a problem.”
Jian Xiyan nodded. “Thank you for your hard work, Dr. Jiang.”
Jian Shenyao, seeing her so calm, had nothing else to urge. “I’ll go see Xiaomin.” After walking a few steps, he suddenly turned to call Lin Feiruo: “Feiruo, come here.”
Jian Xiyan’s spirits were better today, and her reactions were much faster. Usually, Second Uncle rarely called Lin Feiruo aside for a private talk; calling her so frequently now was definitely unusual. To avoid any complications, the most direct method was: keep Lin Feiruo here. Since she herself was immobilized, keeping Lin Feiruo under her nose was the safest bet.
Jian Xiyan suddenly turned fragile: “Feiruo, I’m in pain.”
