After Losing My Memory, I Was Targeted by the Obsessive Movie Queen [gl] - Chapter 14
Three hours ago.
Lu Youqing arrived home and performed a quick cleanup, putting away unnecessary items before setting to work on the cake. She carelessly left her phone to one side.
By the time the cake was finished, Lu Youqing picked up her phone to message Yan He, only to discover that the battery had died and the device had shut down automatically.
She originally intended to charge the phone for a bit before leaving, but her immense anticipation to see Yan He—and her desire for Yan He to eat the cake she made with her own hands—surpassed everything else. She drove straight to the hospital without charging it.
Because her phone was dead, she had been out of contact for several hours, unable to receive messages from anyone. Naturally, she had no idea what had happened in the meantime.
When she drove up to the hospital, she found it already besieged by reporters who had somehow gotten wind of her whereabouts. Remembering the “abnormalities” Yan He mentioned last night, she realized these reporters must have discovered something.
Frowning, she intended to drive away—at least to prevent them from finding out exactly where Yan He was—but she was spotted by the journalists, who began to crowd her car.
Lu Youqing had no choice but to stop. Sitting in the car, she instinctively shielded the cake on the passenger seat. Flashbulbs went off incessantly against her, and reporters pounded on the car door, trying to force her out.
Lu Youqing’s expression was cold as she looked at these people without saying a word.
Fortunately, hospital security arrived and escorted her out of the vehicle. Holding the cake in her arms, Lu Youqing found it difficult to move even a single step amidst the pincer attack of flashes and microphones.
“Miss Lu, do you have anything to say about the recent rumors online?”
“Miss Lu, are you at the hospital today to visit someone close to you?”
“Miss Lu, are the rumors about you bullying cast members during the filming of An Shan true?”
“Miss Lu, please give us a direct answer.”
Lu Youqing hugged the cake tightly, head lowered as she navigated the pushing and shoving of the crowd. Seeing that she wouldn’t say a word, the reporters grew even more dissatisfied, and the jostling became more aggressive. Lu Youqing’s slender frame amidst the surrounding crowd was like a tiny piece of duckweed; a single surging wave could topple her.
She finally reached the hospital entrance, bowing in gratitude to the security guards who helped her. The reporters outside refused to give up, filming her in hopes of finding a clue in her expression. Lu Youqing knit her brows and walked inside with the cake.
The time had long since passed their agreed-upon hour. She had to hurry.
The result was that, when the elevator doors opened, she saw Yan He—gasping for air and visibly pale.
Lu Youqing was still carrying the cake box in her hand, staring blankly at Yan He standing before her. The chaotic noise behind her receded like a tide; she could only hear the woman’s heavy breathing.
“How did you…”
Before she could finish her sentence, she was suddenly pulled into a full embrace, the force so great it felt as if her ribs might snap.
The faint scent of disinfectant enveloped her, smoothing her panicked thoughts inch by inch. The soft touch of the woman pressed tightly against her; she heard Yan He’s heartbeat sync perfectly with her own.
However, before she could raise her arms to hug Yan He back, Yan He quickly released her. Her face showed no emotion now, but an unnatural paleness betrayed what she had just been through.
“A-He, why did you come down?” She pulled Yan He into the elevator, blocking her line of sight to prevent her from seeing the situation outside.
Yan He kept her head down, her gaze fixed silently on the cake box in Lu Youqing’s hand.
Lu Youqing pressed the button for the sixth floor. The elevator doors closed, leaving only the two of them in the enclosed space.
“A-He, I’m sorry. I’m late.” Lu Youqing took her hand, her voice full of apology.
Regardless of what had delayed her today, being late was being late. She had failed to keep her promise to Yan He, and Lu Youqing thought dejectedly that A-He must be angry.
Yan He looked up and gave a smile: “It’s okay. You’re here now, aren’t you? It’s enough that you could come.”
Lu Youqing’s breath hitched. She wanted to say something, but saw Yan He’s gaze drop to the cake.
“What flavor is the cake?” Yan He asked suddenly, watching the exquisite box. The overhead light fell upon her, her lashes fluttering, hiding the emotions in her eyes.
“I want to eat cake.”
Lu Youqing looked at her. Despite the confusion in her heart, she spoke gently.
“It’s your favorite, chocolate. Let’s eat it once we get back to the room, okay?”
Yan He nodded slowly and said nothing more.
Lu Youqing looked at her with narrowed eyes, realizing that perhaps she was unhappy because of the delay, or perhaps she had come down specifically to find her.
Her heart felt flooded with salty, bitter seawater. Lu Youqing didn’t know what to say; she wanted to reach out, but ultimately restrained herself.
In this silent atmosphere, the two returned to the floor where the ward was located. As soon as the elevator opened, they saw the anxious expressions of the two bodyguards.
The guards were stunned to see them. When their eyes landed on Yan He, their hearts finally settled.
“Miss Yan, where did you go? It’s good that you’re alright.” The guard put down the phone she was about to use to call Lu Youqing.
Yan He lowered her head and apologized: “I’m sorry for making you worry.”
Both guards were somewhat shocked. Lu Youqing waved her hand to signal for them to leave, then took Yan He’s hand and led her into the ward, closing the door behind them.
Standing in the room, Yan He felt a bit awkward. Having walked for too long, her right leg was starting to throb with pain, so she dragged her injured limb over to sit on the edge of the bed.
Lu Youqing placed the cake on the table and walked over to tuck the blanket around her.
She sat on the chair, took Yan He’s hand, and used her other hand to stroke her cheek, making Yan He look at her. Then, she leaned in and asked softly.
“A-He, can you tell me why you went downstairs?”
Yan He lowered her eyes, unable to bear the intensity of her gaze. She turned her head slightly and looked out the window.
“It’s already dark,” she said abruptly, not answering Lu Youqing’s question.
Lu Youqing froze. Following her gaze out the window, she indeed saw the blackened sky. She frowned, remembering everything she had promised last night—hardly any of it had come true.
What a truly terrible day.
She sighed, suppressed her disappointment, and curved her lips again: “Then let’s eat cake first.”
Yan He nodded.
Lu Youqing brought the cake over from the table with a smile: “I’m going to open it now.”
Yan He looked up at her and gave a smile, then fixed her eyes on the cake box. Amidst the expectant gaze, Lu Youqing’s slender fingers quickly untied the ribbon, gripped the lid, and slowly lifted it.
A cake that could no longer be described as exquisite or beautiful after being jostled and bumped appeared before their eyes.
