After Saving My Cannon Fodder Omega - Chapter 11
Among them, Feng Zhi was the oldest, but from childhood to adulthood, Ming Rui had always acted more like the “big sister” than Feng Zhi ever did.
In every aspect, Ming Rui always thought further ahead than the three of them. To put it bluntly, she was the one who had matured the earliest. While they all had their own strengths, none of them could match her foresight.
As someone who had already lived through this “storyline” once, Chi Wei naturally knew that Ming Rui currently harbored feelings for her that went beyond friendship. However, those feelings were hidden in the tiniest of cracks, making them incredibly subtle.
To avoid appearing conceited or self-indulgent, Chi Wei had no way of mentioning this to the others. Her only options were to subtly push Ming Rui away or find an opportunity for a private heart-to-heart.
Emotions were complicated things. Moreover, not everyone who failed to become a lover could remain friends once the “window paper” was poked through. They had been sisters for over twenty years; she didn’t want to lose that bond carelessly.
So, facing Feng Zhi’s question, Chi Wei thought for a moment and said, “I don’t have a grievance against her. I just feel that since she has an Omega now, and I’m not an Alpha, I should maintain a proper distance from her.”
After all, Alphas could be with Omegas or Betas; the only pairing they couldn’t form was with another Alpha.
Since it was a possibility, and unless an Alpha was wholeheartedly “locked” onto an Omega, it wasn’t strange for a Beta to want to avoid suspicion when the Alpha was no longer single.
Reminded of this, Feng Zhi thought of the little Omega living in the apartment below her and nodded thoughtfully. “You have a point. But didn’t Ming Rui clarify that the girl is her cousin’s Omega?”
Chi Wei laughed. “She says it and you just believe it?”
Feng Zhi: “You don’t? Why?”
Chi Wei analyzed: “Who is Ming Rui’s cousin? That’s her aunt’s daughter. Does her aunt lack money? Does her cousin not have property in her own name? In F City, any family with a bit of wealth gives their child a house the moment they become an adult.”
Feng Zhi nodded. “That’s true.”
Chi Wei continued: “Then tell me, since the cousin has her own place, why wouldn’t she let the little Omega stay there? Why would she go out of her way to beg the cousin’s older sister, Ming Rui?”
Feng Zhi was suddenly enlightened. “You’re right!”
Chi Wei smiled to herself. I’m talking nonsense, but it sounds convincing.
Of course, it wasn’t entirely nonsense—it was half-truth, half-fiction. Given their long-standing friendship, she technically shouldn’t be analyzing and speculating like this, but she had her reasons.
The sound of the door opening signaled the arrival of Xie Yueyue, the second person who had promised to pick Chi Wei up from the hospital.
The moment Feng Zhi saw her, her expression shifted instantly. “Why are you here too? Didn’t I tell you I’d handle picking up Xiaoyu?”
Xie Yueyue raised an eyebrow. “Did you? When? I didn’t know.”
“…” Feng Zhi glared. “Xie Yueyue, are you going to play rogue with me now?”
Chi Wei felt a headache coming on seeing them like this. She stood up and placed the remaining frosted tomatoes on the coffee table. “Alright, alright, why do you two have to bicker the second you meet? Eat some tomatoes to cool your tempers. I’m going to the restroom; we’ll leave as soon as I’m out.”
Feng Zhi agreed. Seeing six or seven tomatoes left in the bag, she quickly stuffed three into her mouth.
Xie Yueyue frowned at Feng Zhi, whose cheeks were puffed out like a hamster. She rushed over to snatch the bag, but no matter how fast she was, Feng Zhi had the “home-field advantage” and had already claimed most of them. Xie Yueyue only managed to grab the last one.
Feng Zhi finished chewing and then smugly showed off the three she still held in her hand.
“You cruel sister!” Xie Yueyue huffed before eating the one she had managed to scavenge.
Feng Zhi: “Blehhh.”
When Chi Wei came out of the bathroom and saw Xie Yueyue’s resentful expression, she asked in surprise, “Why the long face?”
Xie Yueyue pursed her lips, trying not to look too aggrieved. “Nothing. I just thought the tomatoes were good. I wanted to ask, Sister Chui, where did you buy them?”
Chi Wei pointed out the window. “Dabao Tanghulu, diagonally across from the hospital.”
Hearing the answer, Xie Yueyue immediately went to the window to look. When she returned, her mood seemed slightly better.
This time, leaving the hospital was simpler as there was no paperwork to handle. The three of them went downstairs and exited together.
Facing the two cars parked side-by-side, Chi Wei chose the black GTR without hesitation, hopping into Feng Zhi’s passenger seat.
Xie Yueyue looked like she wanted to say something, but knowing her driving skills were mediocre, she didn’t dare complain. As she left the hospital, she cast a regretful look at the Dabao Tanghulu shop (which hadn’t opened for the day yet) and drove her white McLaren behind Feng Zhi’s black GTR.
“Slow down a bit and wait for Yueyue?” Chi Wei said, looking at the serious-faced Feng Zhi.
Feng Zhi pursed her lips. “If you’re really worried I won’t wait for her, why didn’t you sit in her car?”
Chi Wei bit her lower lip to suppress a laugh and refused to answer. She was amazed—as long as it didn’t involve romance, Feng Zhi’s brain worked incredibly fast!
The black and white cars maintained a perfect distance for two blocks, looking like a pair of close friends. Then, the black car suddenly accelerated, vanishing from Xie Yueyue’s sight in the blink of an eye.
Xie Yueyue: “…”
“You’re a bit too mean,” Chi Wei said with a guilty glance at the rearview mirror. The McLaren was nowhere to be seen.
Feng Zhi’s lips curled up. “The destination is the same. What’s the harm in not waiting?”
Chi Wei had to admit she was right.
The two turned right at another intersection, pulling up in front of the Haidilao hotpot restaurant. Feng Zhi said, “Ming Rui found someone to drive your Porsche from the Starry Sky Bar back to the apartment parking lot.”
Chi Wei was shocked. “That fast?”
“Well, yeah. Were we supposed to wait two or three months until it was too filthy to look at before helping you find it?” Feng Zhi blinked, her eyes full of playful disdain.
“It wouldn’t have come to that.” Chi Wei opened the car door and laughed, catching a mouthful of wind.
Chi Wei retrieved her Audi keys from Feng Zhi’s armrest box and walked straight to a Tiffany-blue R8 in the parking lot. Upon exiting, she swerved in front of Feng Zhi, leading her back to the original road. Sure enough, they spotted Xie Yueyue again, gripping the steering wheel and crawling along at a snail’s pace.
The cars passing the McLaren were full of drivers who were fuming but didn’t dare honk or shout. They could only silently keep their distance, then suddenly accelerate past her, leaving her far behind.
Chi Wei laughed into her rearview mirror as she led the way back to the apartment.
The three of them entered Chi Wei’s apartment together.
Feng Zhi was a bit surprised. “Why are you here again? Aren’t you going back home to live?”
Chi Wei slumped lazily on the sofa. “Nope. I plan to move out officially after New Year’s.”
“Why?” Feng Zhi couldn’t understand. “Isn’t living at home great? You’re fed and cared for, you don’t have to worry about a thing.”
Xie Yueyue leaned against the side, scrolling through her “Moments” feed. Hearing this, she looked up at Feng Zhi and then at Chi Wei.
Chi Wei wailed, “Sister, I’m someone who has to turn in a design draft every week now. As an ‘inspiration-based’ talented contestant, I have very high requirements for my creative environment, okay?”
Feng Zhi sneered. “So you’re saying none of your previous works were drawn at home?”
Chi Wei shook her index finger. “At home, too many people coddle me. It’s easy to get lazy. Here, only I coddle myself. With a bit of pressure, it’ll be much easier to finish the task.”
Feng Zhi nodded. “I’ve learned something new today.”
Seeing they had finally fallen silent, Xie Yueyue finally found an opening for the words she’d been holding back: “Sister Chui, Xuan’s Tavern is currently pre-heating for their grand reopening. There might not be anyone there today, but it should open tomorrow. Want to go check it out?”
“There might not be anyone?” Chi Wei sat up, a sharp glint in her eyes. She waved Xie Yueyue over from the wall. “Then let’s go tomorrow. Come, Yueyue, sit here.”
Xie Yueyue: “???”
Chi Wei then smiled and waved at Feng Zhi. “Feng Zhi, you too.”
Feng Zhi: “?”
Though confused, Feng Zhi and Xie Yueyue sat down on either side of Chi Wei.
With the three of them sitting in a row, Chi Wei took the phone from Xie Yueyue’s hand, opened the camera, adjusted the lens, and stuffed it back. “Yueyue, take a group photo of us and post it on your Moments.”
“Why?” Xie Yueyue pressed the shutter in confusion. She showed the photo to Chi Wei, and once confirmed, she opened her Moments feed.
Chi Wei said, “No reason, just post it.”
“And then?” Xie Yueyue asked.
Chi Wei smiled. “And then, you reach out to the former lady boss of Xuan’s Tavern and book a table for their reopening day. We’re going there for dinner.”
Feng Zhi opened her phone to see the captionless selfie Xie Yueyue had posted. While hitting the like button, she asked, “So what was the point of posting the photo?”
Chi Wei leaned back against the cushions, looking at the two pairs of confused eyes. She said with mock mystery, “I saw the lady boss of the Xuan family and her daughter at the hospital last night.”
“What?!” Feng Zhi and Xie Yueyue exclaimed in rare unison.
Chi Wei laughed. “So, Yueyue, you can go ahead and push my future mother-in-law’s WeChat contact to me now.”
Future mother-in-law?
Chi Wei hadn’t wanted to take such a long detour, but adding her future mother-in-law’s WeChat required a legitimate reason. Otherwise, she’d look like a suspicious… street hooligan… lusting after her daughter’s beauty!
After adding the WeChat account with a note about booking a table, Chi Wei patted her chest in high spirits. “What do you want for lunch? Just say the word, it’s on me!”
Xie Yueyue said worriedly, “Didn’t you say you’ll only have an income of 8,000 a month from now on? Maybe I should treat us to lunch instead.”
Feng Zhi shot Xie Yueyue a look. “What do you know? A starved camel is still bigger than a horse. With all the schemes in your Sister Chui’s head, the two of us combined don’t have as much money as she does.”
Meanwhile, Xu Danying—the lady boss of Xuan’s Tavern, whose right leg was wrapped in a thick layer of bandages and a splint—was leaning against a door frame, calling out with difficulty: “Old Xuan, I forgot my phone! Bring it to me quickly, thank you!”
Xuan Nian, hearing the noise, stepped out of the study. She looked back at her father who was on a call, gently closed the door, and walked toward her parents’ bedroom while asking, “Mom, what did you just say?”
Xu Danying sighed and repeated, “Niannian, Mommy needs to use the bathroom and forgot her phone. Bring it to me.”
Xuan Nian answered and quickened her pace.
Xu Danying usually kept her phone on the nightstand. Xuan Nian pushed open the half-closed door and spotted it instantly. Just as she was about to lean down and pick it up, the screen lit up.
Accompanied by a notification for a new friend request, there was an avatar that looked strikingly familiar.
Xuan Nian: “?”
