- Chapter 12 - Someone's Gone Mad
Sheng Nanxi went with Yu Sui to the school doctor to treat her wound. Fortunately, she was only hit once, or it would have been more than just a swollen face.
Seeing Yu Sui wince in pain, the usually good-natured Sheng Nanxi couldn’t help but complain about You Min again: “That person is so petty. She can’t even handle losing a competition.”
Yu Sui hissed: “She just can’t stand losing to me.”
Remembering Yu Sui’s swift moves on stage, Sheng Nanxi was not only surprised but also praised her: “You were really amazing today. We were worried you would be beaten down by her like before.”
Yu Sui raised her chin, her pride very obvious: “She won’t have that chance again.”
Sheng Nanxi was relieved to see that she hadn’t been affected emotionally. She knew that even though Yu Sui liked to cause trouble, she still wanted to be cared for and praised by her family and friends.
She just didn’t get that much, so she always acted like she didn’t care.
After her wound was treated, the school doctor gave her a few more instructions on what to do after she got back to avoid leaving any unwanted scars on her delicate face. Before leaving, Yu Sui suddenly made an excuse and told Sheng Nanxi to wait for her outside the door.
The school doctor saw her return and looked serious, as if she had something to say.
“What’s wrong? Are you still worried about your wound?”
Yu Sui was hesitant. She wanted to ask about the current stage of her differentiation, but she didn’t know how to start.
“All those things I said about the consequences were the worst-case scenarios if you don’t take care of it. But in reality, very few people actually end up like that. I just wanted to emphasize the importance of taking care of yourself.”
Yu Sui saw that the school doctor had misunderstood her, so she had to explain herself: “Actually, I wanted to ask if this injury will affect my differentiation?”
Many students had come to get tested recently to keep track of their differentiation progress. The base’s unified tests were scheduled every two weeks, but students were allowed to come in for private tests anytime.
Besides the mandatory tests, Yu Sui had never come in for a private test. Seeing her hesitant and wanting to ask, the school doctor smiled: “External injuries generally don’t have an effect. If you want to know your exact differentiation progress, I can test you. We just need to draw a little blood.”
“Will there be any obvious changes if the differentiation has already started?”
Many students had asked the school doctor similar questions recently, so she didn’t doubt Yu Sui’s intentions. For young people who were facing the pressure of differentiation, she wanted to help them with her professional knowledge.
“Depending on your differentiation type, your body will show obvious signs of the traits of your future identity. For example, Alphas will become stronger, not just physically but mentally as well. Omegas will become gentler and more delicate. Of course, their physical strength will be temporarily imbalanced, but other aspects will be enhanced, especially their observational skills. They will see a significant improvement.”
“So Omegas are people who are very observant?”
“It also depends on the level. The higher the rank, the better they are in that aspect.”
Yu Sui sighed to herself. This was exactly what Chu Jiayun was like.
She could already feel the changes in her body. A blood test might reveal something, and it might even be reported to the instructors. It was better to delay this, so Yu Sui just said thank you and left.
As she came out, she saw Sheng Nanxi sitting on the sofa, looking at materials for the debate competition. Yu Sui was getting a headache from this. She thought she might as well use her injury as an excuse to withdraw from the debate. Her contribution was minimal anyway.
On the way back, Sheng Nanxi suddenly mentioned that she had seen Chen Yinian while she was waiting for her. He didn’t look well.
“Are you saying Chen Yinian didn’t even say hello to you?”
Sheng Nanxi didn’t like his rude behavior: “Yeah. I even called out to him, but he just glanced at me and hurried away. He was clutching a folder to his chest and protecting it, so I didn’t feel right chasing after him and asking.”
Chen Yinian was just a minor character in the original book. His part was pitifully small. Yu Sui vaguely remembered that he went mad in the end. But the book didn’t say why or when it happened.
She remembered that he had ripped up his test paper during the last psychological endurance training session. She guessed that he was already on his way to madness. Yu Sui tried to remember and find more clues, but there wasn’t much to dig into about Chen Yinian.

After the match, You Min also went to treat her wound, but what annoyed her more than the result was the lecture she got from Instructor Luo.
Bai Jiling and Chu Jiayun didn’t get involved in scolding You Min, but they took the match very seriously.
“Yu Sui pulled back her offense in time not only because she followed the rules of the competition but also because her physical strength was declining. She was able to make the right choice after accurately assessing the situation, and I think her performance in that regard was very good.”
There wasn’t much emotion in Chu Jiayun’s voice. There was still residual blood on her fingertips: “It’s rare to hear you praise a student like that. It seems like you have high hopes for her.”
Bai Jiling shook her head: “I just feel bad for her. She has a lot of potential, but unfortunately, based on her current performance, she’s still far from being an SS-class.”
The implication was that Yu Sui was good, but she probably wasn’t the one they were looking for.
The bloodstain on Chu Jiayun’s hand had already dried. The mysterious dizziness and accelerated heartbeat she had felt earlier were also gone. Although the feeling wasn’t strong, it still made Chu Jiayun nervous.
Bai Jiling noticed her strangeness and stopped to examine her carefully: “What’s wrong?”
Chu Jiayun’s lips were pressed together and then slowly parted. She said calmly, “I was a little dizzy just now. I’m fine now.”
Bai Jiling was still worried: “Do you want to go get checked out?”
Chu Jiayun looked at her helplessly: “Don’t you remember we’re at the base?”
Bai Jiling knew she was cautious and was afraid of the school doctor finding something wrong. But it was already risky for Chu Jiayun to use large doses of inhibitors, and with her special birthday approaching, she couldn’t afford to be careless.
“When we go back to the city this weekend, I’ll take you to my uncle’s place and ask him to give you a thorough checkup.”
To her surprise, Chu Jiayun, who never wanted to trouble anyone, readily agreed.
You Min returned to her dorm room with Instructor Luo’s comments, fuming. She then started to smash everything she could get her hands on, scaring her roommates away. She made a mental note of Yu Sui. It seemed this grudge would never be resolved.
The last training session of the week was a hike up a mountain. It was still a group activity, with one instructor leading each group. The first group to reach the top would get bonus points for their assessment score.
Bai Jiling was looking at the group list just as Chu Jiayun came to drop off the psychological evaluation results.
“I adjusted the list of members in your group. What do you think?”
Chu Jiayun took the list and found her name. Her group members were supposed to be Ren Xuran, You Min, and Chen Yinian.
Bai Jiling had crossed out Ren Xuran and You Min’s names and only kept Chen Yinian’s. Then she had handwritten Sheng Nanxi and Yu Sui next to it.
Chu Jiayun looked at her, and she quickly guessed what she was doing.
Bai Jiling didn’t hide it and said honestly: “Ren Xuran’s Alpha traits are becoming more and more obvious, and You Min is not very obedient. I’m afraid you won’t be able to handle them.”
“So you replaced them with an obedient one and a weak one?”
“Jiayun, I’m not questioning your ability. It’s just that we’ve all been through this mountain climbing activity. We know that in an undeveloped wilderness, countless accidents can happen. While you’re taking care of your group members, you also need to take care of yourself. I just wanted to lighten your burden. Besides, this is also a good opportunity for observation.”
Chu Jiayun sighed softly: “Sheng Nanxi’s performance has already been ruled out. And with Yu Sui’s physical fitness, she’s probably not the person I’m looking for either. I feel like you’ve put all the people I need to observe into your group.”
Bai Jiling wasn’t going to change it back. She smiled to lighten the mood: “I told you, I’m willing to help you with all my might. It doesn’t matter who finds that person between you and me. Why be so specific?”
Chu Jiayun didn’t say anything else. Bai Jiling looked at her intently. On that stubborn and calm face, it was hard to find the wild and carefree spirit from the past. She even wondered if the day would ever come when Chu Jiayun’s wild rose-like charm would reappear.
Mountain climbing was a required activity at the base, but the location was updated every year and matched according to the students’ potential for that year. Naturally, this group of top students was going to face an even tougher challenge than the previous ones.
Yu Sui didn’t expect to be in a group with the crazy Chen Yinian. Ever since she saw the group list, she kept reminding Sheng Nanxi to stay with her and never get too close to Chen Yinian.
As for Chu Jiayun, Yu Sui seemed to have gotten used to her presence. She had even guessed she would be in her group before seeing the list. But what surprised Yu Sui was that this time, Chu Jiayun’s gaze on her was noticeably less intense. Besides emphasizing the rules and checking their equipment before they left, she didn’t give her any extra attention.
This made her feel relieved. It seemed Chu Jiayun’s obsession was finally going to be defeated by this wild mountain.
This undeveloped mountain wasn’t steep, but the difficulty of the climb was not low. It tested not only physical strength but also willpower, judgment, teamwork, and cooperation.
Not long after they started, Yu Sui took the backpack from Sheng Nanxi and hung two bags on her front and back. Chu Jiayun saw it but didn’t stop her.
According to the information they received before they left, the one-way climb would take about four hours. After reaching the top, they would have a two-hour break. Students who ran out of energy or got injured could apply for transportation back down the mountain, such as a helicopter or a special vehicle on the fire escape route. This would result in a deduction of points. The ones who could persevere would return the way they came.
Everyone knew that this was a long and unavoidable journey, so they relied more on the cooperation of their group members.
