After Transmigrated As The Scummy Ex Of The White Lotus Female Supporting Character - Chapter 10
Because Pei Wu was far too resistant toward unfamiliar men, in the end, they had to switch to a female doctor before she could barely calm down. Even so, Pei Wu still rejected the unfamiliar environment. She was unwilling to get close to them and stayed extremely close to Shang Yuqing as if searching for a sense of security. While she was getting the IV drip, her head remained lowered the whole time, and her hand tightly clenched the hem of Shang Yuqing’s top. When she made that movement, even she herself did not realize it.
“How do you feel?” Shang Yuqing asked in a low voice. “Does your body feel a little better?”
Pei Wu’s thoughts were muddled, and her reactions to the outside world were very slow. She thought for a long time before mechanically nodding.
In order to soothe her uneasy emotions, Shang Yuqing held her hand tighter and whispered by her ear like an older sister, “Tell me if you feel uncomfortable. Don’t endure it.”
Pei Wu’s fingers moved almost imperceptibly.
Pei Wu’s fever was not severe. After getting the IV, she felt much better. Once they got medicine from the hospital, they planned to go home.
The car was parked on another street. Today was market day, and even though it was already afternoon, the street was still crowded and noisy, with people and vehicles flowing nonstop.
Shang Yuqing was afraid Pei Wu would get lost, so she held Pei Wu’s wrist the entire way. If this had been any other ordinary day, Pei Wu probably would not even have let Shang Yuqing touch one finger.
Unfortunately, her disgust toward the crowd surpassed her aversion to Shang Yuqing, so she could only let Shang Yuqing do as she pleased.
Suddenly, Shang Yuqing’s hand was empty. Pei Wu had pulled away.
Not understanding why, Shang Yuqing turned her head and was just about to ask what was wrong when she saw Pei Wu staring fixedly at the little sugar figures not far from them.
Pei Wu was wearing a black mask and a black baseball cap, a rather cold-looking outfit. Because of that, the longing in her eyes seemed especially—
A contrast moe. Shang Yuqing thought of the phrase.
She asked tentatively, “Do you want that?”
Pei Wu did not speak, but when she turned her eyes back toward Shang Yuqing, they carried a hint of expectation.
Shang Yuqing could not help laughing and pulled her over to the sugar figure stall. “Which one do you want?”
Pei Wu looked carefully and chose a little butterfly-shaped sugar figure. Without another word, Shang Yuqing immediately bought it. After that, she even asked, “Do you want another?”
Pei Wu shook her head. Shang Yuqing smiled as she handed the sugar figure to her. When Pei Wu took it, Shang Yuqing caught all the joy in her eyes and could not help curving her lips.
Shang Yuqing discovered that at certain times, Pei Wu would show a kind of abnormal innocence and childishness. For example, she was always very interested in the little trinkets on the street. Things like balloons children played with and bubble machines, those very common children’s toys, seemed to interest Pei Wu a lot. Because she wanted to eat the little sugar figure, Pei Wu pulled her mask down a little. She ate it very slowly and very quietly.
Her behavior actually did not seem very different from the children on the street. Shang Yuqing even felt that she was rather childlike.
Childlike.
Shang Yuqing savored the word. Perhaps it was not childlikeness either. After all, Pei Wu had never had a childhood.
It was precisely because she lacked it that, at certain times, she became especially fascinated by it.
Shang Yuqing deliberately slowed her steps so Pei Wu could play to her heart’s content. Perhaps it was the aftereffect of both illness and her episode. After Pei Wu had finished going mad, all of her nerves became sluggish, with a faint blankness as well. Her consciousness had not fully cleared yet, so everything she did now depended entirely on feeling and instinct. She looked much more obedient.
Perhaps after extreme madness came weary quiet. From the time she got the injection until now, Pei Wu had been very well-behaved.
Two beautiful women with outstanding appearances walking down the street naturally attracted many looks. Who knew how many people’s gazes they drew?
Neither of the two parties involved noticed at all.
There were many children here blowing bubbles. Bright, dazzling bubbles floated in great clusters into the air. Everywhere the eye could see was filled with shimmering colors, glinting beneath the brilliant sunlight.
Pei Wu looked as though she had been mesmerized. Her eyes stared unblinkingly at the bubbles, and she even forgot to eat the little sugar figure in her hand.
A trace of young girlish liveliness finally appeared on that face that had always been pale, cold, and beautiful. The bubbles floated around her, gently kissing her earlobe, then her brows and eyes.
Pei Wu was looking at the bubbles, while Shang Yuqing was looking at her.
She liked this version of Pei Wu. It made her feel that Pei Wu was not some villain living inside a novel, that she did not have all those filthy memories and past experiences. She was only an unexpectedly beautiful younger sister.
“Pretty?” Shang Yuqing asked with a smile.
Pei Wu pressed her lips together and smiled faintly. “Pretty.”
“Do you want one?” Shang Yuqing asked her. “Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you. Just tell me.”
Pei Wu thought for a moment and had just been about to speak when a chubby little boy behind her suddenly rushed over with his head lowered and slammed into her hard. She failed to hold the sugar figure steady, and it shattered all over the ground. She staggered several steps back, and her hand accidentally landed on the grill of a barbecue stall. Burned by the scorching heat, she quickly pulled her hand back. For a moment, she stood frozen in place, somewhat stunned.
Shang Yuqing rushed to Pei Wu’s side almost in the next second. She looked at Pei Wu’s hand. It was a little red, but she could tell it was not serious. She let out a breath of relief, but still asked worriedly, “Does it hurt?”
Pei Wu slowly shook her head.
The chubby little boy’s steadiness was rather impressive. He had not fallen, but the toy airplane in his arms had broken, and he started crying on the spot. His grandmother rushed over. Seeing her precious grandson like that, her heart ached terribly. The little boy’s toy had broken, and ignoring everything else, he pointed at Pei Wu and Shang Yuqing. “Grandma, they broke my toy.”
The old woman ran forward and kept rubbing the boy’s head, while her mouth cursed at Pei Wu. “You little girl, are your eyes blind? My grandson ran over, so why were you standing there like a wooden block!”
Pei Wu only looked silently at the little sugar figure on the ground. She did not even lift her head and completely ignored her.
But Shang Yuqing was a little angered by this old woman’s attitude. She had still felt somewhat guilty about the boy’s toy, but she really disliked the way this old woman cursed without distinguishing right from wrong. She stepped forward and blocked Pei Wu behind her.
“Auntie, what nonsense are you saying? Look at this road. It’s wide enough for a car to pass through with no problem.”
Shang Yuqing was smiling, but her smile was somewhat cool. “My younger sister and I were standing on this little path. We weren’t blocking anyone’s way. Your grandson lowered his head and didn’t watch where he was going. Instead of taking the wide road, he insisted on running into us.”
Shang Yuqing spread her hands. “We’re very innocent too.”
“Besides.” Shang Yuqing smiled gracefully, yet there was no smile in her eyes. “Whether my younger sister’s eyes have problems or not doesn’t need Auntie’s concern. You should focus on properly teaching your grandson some basic walking common sense.”
The old woman was so angry at Shang Yuqing’s sharp tongue that her face turned green, then white.
Shang Yuqing was not someone willing to suffer a loss, but she was not the type to seek revenge for the smallest grievance either. It was only that seeing Pei Wu accidentally get hurt made her inexplicably angry, and she could not control her mouth.
Seeing the old woman’s ugly expression, Shang Yuqing had achieved her goal and did not want to continue arguing. She estimated the value of the toy, took out some money as compensation, and stuffed it into the chubby little boy’s hand.
“Little kid, it’s not good to lower your head and not watch the road. Otherwise, if you bump into someone, be careful that someone might bully you.”
The chubby little boy stared blankly, a little embarrassed, and asked dazedly, “Who bullied me?”
“You’re just a little brat. You wouldn’t understand.” Shang Yuqing automatically ignored the old woman’s hateful gaze. “And it’s not good to casually blame others either. Go apologize to that sister.”
The chubby little boy was, after all, still a child. His thoughts were simple and good-natured, and he knew he had done something wrong. He walked over to Pei Wu sheepishly and said softly, “Sorry, Sister. I didn’t mean to bump into you.”
Pei Wu lowered her head and looked expressionlessly at the chubby little boy. Rather childishly, she opened her mouth and said, “You made my candy fall.”
“Ah?” The chubby little boy was a little stunned. He scratched his head. “Then… do you want me to pay you back?”
Pei Wu gave the child no face at all. “You have no money.”
Shang Yuqing was shaken by the miraculous conversation between the two of them. She stepped forward and stopped this somewhat childish exchange, saying to the boy, “No need to pay. I’ll buy one for her.”
When Shang Yuqing argued with the old woman just now, their already eye-catching appearances had drawn even more people who came to watch the excitement. Shang Yuqing was a little embarrassed. She pulled Pei Wu, wanting to leave, and hurriedly said to the boy, “Little kid, we’re leaving first. Go buy yourself another toy. Remember to watch the road next time.”
After saying that, she pulled Pei Wu through the crowd and ran.
When they passed by the old woman, Pei Wu accidentally heard the old woman spit out a curse.
“Bah. Just looking at them, neither of them seems like a proper person. Fox-spirit looks.”
Pei Wu turned back, tilted her head slightly, and slowly pulled out a smile toward the old woman. In the next instant, she disappeared into the crowd.
That smile could hardly be called a smile. Instead, there was something thought-provoking and strange about it. The old woman felt an inexplicable chill.
The two of them ran to the place where the car was parked. Shang Yuqing opened the car door. “Get inside. I’ll look for some burn medicine for you.”
Who knew Pei Wu would not move at all? She looked straight at Shang Yuqing.
“What are you looking at?” Shang Yuqing was utterly puzzled by her stare.
“The sugar figure broke,” Pei Wu said abruptly.
Shang Yuqing: “???”
So?
Pei Wu’s eyes drooped slightly at the corners, looking somewhat wronged. “You said you would buy me another one.”
“…”
So that was what this was about.
Shang Yuqing did not know whether to laugh or cry. She actually felt that Pei Wu after an episode had a few traces of direct, straightforward cuteness.
“I’ll buy you one next time. As many as you want.”
“Really?” Pei Wu did not believe her.
“Of course. I never lie to you.”
“You lied to me before.”
“You said that was before. Before isn’t now. How could I keep lying to you?” After Shang Yuqing waited for her to sit in the car, she drove back home.
“No lying.” Pei Wu’s spirit was weak right now, and she lacked a sense of security.
“I won’t lie to you.”
