After Transmigrated As The Scummy Ex Of The White Lotus Female Supporting Character - Chapter 3
Sleeping at night became another problem.
After thinking it over, Grandma Pei decided to let Shang Yuqing sleep in Pei Wu’s room. There were not that many rooms in the old house, and there were not enough beds either. Pei Wu’s room was relatively large and had two beds.
Shang Yuqing had no objection. She was just a little confused. Grandma Pei had just said there were only two rooms at home, but when Shang Yuqing had casually looked around today, there were clearly three bedrooms, and all of them had beds. Why had she said there were only two?
But this question was a little pointless after all, so Shang Yuqing did not think too much about it.
Shang Yuqing had no objection on her side, but Pei Wu was unwilling.
She leaned sideways against the doorway, one foot lifted and planted against the doorframe. “I don’t want to share a room with you. Get lost and go somewhere else.”
“Get lost where?” Shang Yuqing raised an eyebrow. “Outside? Do you want me to sleep with the mosquitoes?”
Pei Wu did not care where she slept. She only gave a cold oh. “What the hell does that have to do with me? You were the one who insisted on coming here. Do you expect me to receive you properly too?”
Shang Yuqing brushed her hair back and smiled brightly. “Don’t be so cruel. I came to see you out of kindness. There’s no need to go that far, right?”
Pei Wu remained unmoved, as steady as ever. She said faintly, “Did I beg you to come?”
Seeing that Pei Wu would not listen to reason, Shang Yuqing seemed to sigh. “Fine, then. I’ll ask Grandma.”
After saying that, she tilted her head slightly, looking as if she was about to call Grandma Pei. Grandma Pei slept early, and Pei Wu did not want to disturb her. Hearing this, Pei Wu instinctively lowered her foot and reached out to cover Shang Yuqing’s mouth.
A glint flashed through Shang Yuqing’s eyes. Quick as lightning, she grabbed Pei Wu’s hand, pulled it to her side, and took advantage of the opening to slip into the room.
Because she was still holding Pei Wu’s hand, when she went inside and pulled her along, Shang Yuqing naturally turned around. Before Pei Wu could react, she found herself standing extremely close to Shang Yuqing, her wrist still held in the other woman’s hand.
Pei Wu frowned at her. The two of them were similar in height, giving off a feeling of being evenly matched. Pei Wu’s eyes were filled with cold hostility.
As if she had touched something disgusting, she broke free at once in the next second. “Don’t touch me.”
Shang Yuqing was not blind, so of course she saw the disgust in Pei Wu’s eyes. But she was broad-minded and simply treated Pei Wu as a spoiled, willful younger sister. After all, the original owner was four years older than Pei Wu. Speaking of which, her real age was about the same as the original owner’s too. Sometimes, the coincidences were so fitting that Shang Yuqing had the illusion that she and the original owner were the same person.
Shang Yuqing shrugged innocently. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”
Pei Wu no longer wanted to argue with her. Recently, she had been getting sleepy very easily, and after that little scene just now, she was a little tired.
She climbed onto her own bed by herself and buried her head under the thin blanket, leaving Shang Yuqing with only the back of her head, covered in beautiful hair.
Shang Yuqing wanted to remind her to pull the blanket down a little and not cover her nose, or it would be hard to breathe. But she felt that even if she said it, Pei Wu would probably just treat it as wind passing by her ears.
Sigh. Being a person was really hard.
Shang Yuqing walked to Pei Wu’s bedside and said softly, “Good night. Sweet dreams.”
After saying that, she snapped the light off with a click.
She left a small night-light on.
The countryside night was as quiet as darkness itself. Frogs called endlessly, and outside the window, wind seemed to sweep through the bamboo grove, sending rustling sounds to her ears.
In the past, she had almost never been able to sleep properly. Filming and schedules had taken up nearly her entire day. Being able to sleep peacefully like this now was actually quite enjoyable.
“Why did you come here?”
Pei Wu’s voice suddenly sounded, asking the same question from that morning again.
Shang Yuqing was startled by her. So she would not give up until she got an answer?
Naturally, Shang Yuqing could not tell the truth. Combining everything she knew about the grudges between the original owner and Pei Wu, she thought about how she should answer in a way that sounded reliable. She turned over and faced Pei Wu’s back.
Although this was a fictional world, and the people inside it were all illusory, to her, all the people and things here were merely a ladder for her to come back to life.
But occasionally, she felt that this seemingly vague and insubstantial world had a real shape to it. The people here, whether evil or kind, were also made of flesh and blood.
The original owner was a scumbag woman, a minor character who had only been brushed over in a single stroke in the book, easily stamped with the label of “scum.” But at certain moments, Shang Yuqing could clearly feel that whenever she came into contact with anything related to Pei Wu, an inexplicable ache and guilt would pierce through her heart like needles.
She knew that these were the original owner’s joys and sorrows. They were not hers. They had nothing to do with her.
The dim yellow light fell over Pei Wu’s thin back. Shang Yuqing’s eyes inexplicably turned a little hazy. Even though deep down, she felt that there were no other feelings between herself and Pei Wu, some words seemed to be emotions forced out by the wild pounding of her heart, compelling her to say, “…I wanted to come see whether you were doing well.”
“…”
Pei Wu fell silent. After a long time, she said mockingly, “Look at me. I’m living like some shameful madwoman who can’t be seen by others. Do you think I’m doing well?”
It’s precisely because you’re not doing well that my heart aches for you.
That sentence suddenly surfaced in Shang Yuqing’s mind. It was not her own thought, but somehow it also seemed to be hers. Panic rose in Shang Yuqing’s heart. She vaguely felt that the original owner inside this body might not have left.
Neither of them said anything after that.
In the middle of the night.
Shang Yuqing felt it was a little hard to breathe. Her neck hurt too, as if someone was gripping it tightly.
Half-asleep and dazed, Shang Yuqing was startled by that thought and abruptly opened her eyes. What entered her sight was a pair of blood-red eyes. Pei Wu’s brows and eyes were full of heavy hostility, and her gaze was filled with abnormal madness. She was tightly choking Shang Yuqing, lowering her voice as she said viciously, “Lu Qianwei, Lin Jun, both of you go die! I hate you! Why do you get to live better than me? Why!”
Pei Wu’s strength was great. Shang Yuqing was having a very hard time breathing. Realizing that Pei Wu might be having another episode and had mistaken her for them, she struggled to say, “…I, cough, I’m… Shang, cough, Shang Yuqing.”
Pei Wu’s movements did pause for a moment. Just as Shang Yuqing thought she would let go, Pei Wu’s grip instead became even fiercer. Her expression turned even more frenzied. “Shang Yuqing! Why did you abandon me? I thought you liked me! You coward. You threw me away and ran off. How could you do that? Why don’t you go die!”
“All of you deserve to die. Lu Qianwei deserves to die too. Why do all of you get to live well, while I live like a dog? It’s not fair! All of you go die! Die, die!”
With great effort, Shang Yuqing grabbed Pei Wu’s wrists, gritted her teeth, and used her strength to flip them over, pressing Pei Wu beneath her. Seeing that Pei Wu was about to struggle, Shang Yuqing swiftly and decisively pinned Pei Wu’s wrists above her head, pressing one knee between Pei Wu’s legs to stop her from moving any further.
“Hah… hah.” Shang Yuqing gulped in air, panting as she shouted, “Pei Wu! What are you doing?!”
Pei Wu’s eyes were blank. She looked at Shang Yuqing with a somewhat innocent, bewildered gaze, clearly not yet recovered.
Shang Yuqing felt as though she had punched cotton. She was a little deflated, but even more helpless. She was about to continue saying a few things to Pei Wu when she saw that Pei Wu was crying. Tears kept sliding down her face, and the wetness in her eyes spilled into the dim yellow lamplight, shimmering like amber.
She looked as though she was in great pain, very sad. She was crying, but there was no sound.
Her pale face was covered in tear tracks, as if she would shatter in the next second.
The tip of Shang Yuqing’s heart trembled. She let go of the hands she had been gripping and wiped away the tears on Pei Wu’s face. Her voice was soft and slow. “Why are you crying?”
“…I don’t know.” Pei Wu was still not fully conscious. Her whole person remained muddled and dazed. Following only instinct, she grabbed tightly onto Shang Yuqing’s collar and murmured, “I feel awful. Mom, why won’t you come take me away? Mom, everyone has left me. There’s no one by my side anymore. But I don’t want to be alone.”
Shang Yuqing felt as though her collar was about to be torn apart by Pei Wu’s grip. The other woman was still muttering to herself in a daze. Shang Yuqing lowered her eyes and quietly looked at her, her hands still braced on either side of Pei Wu’s body. After a long while, she let out an almost imperceptible sigh, covered Pei Wu’s eyes, and lowered herself down.
For once, she pretended to be Pei Wu’s mother. She pressed her forehead close to Pei Wu’s and coaxed her softly.
“You won’t be alone. Someone will always come to your side and stop leaving.”
The starlight will not hide, the moon will not retreat, and there are still countless days in this world. One day, someone will walk toward you through the years.
You will meet that person, even if it is not me.
The next day, Shang Yuqing woke up first. When she saw Pei Wu lying beside her, her scalp went a little numb for a moment. Pei Wu’s sleeping face was peaceful, completely unlike the madness from last night.
Shang Yuqing got out of bed as quietly as possible, put on her clothes, and fled to the corridor outside.
The morning air still carried the dampness unique to deep night. Birds chirped crisply, and the light of dawn had already begun to wind softly over the distant mountains. The scenery was uniquely beautiful, but Shang Yuqing had no time to appreciate it.
She took out her phone and looked at the red marks on her neck, feeling somewhat troubled. Her neck was very fair, and Pei Wu’s grip had been strong, so the red marks stood out clearly.
She could not wear a scarf in the middle of summer either.
Grandma Pei came to the corridor to hang up clothes. “Xiao Qing, you’re awake.”
“What happened to your neck!” Grandma Pei’s sharp eyes spotted the red marks on Shang Yuqing’s neck.
Shang Yuqing futilely covered them with her hand. “Uh… this…”
For a moment, she could not think of any excuse to gloss it over.
Grandma Pei saw the reason at a glance. She put down the clothes and gently touched Shang Yuqing’s neck with her hand. “Ah Wu did this, didn’t she? I’m sorry, Xiao Qing.”
Grandma Pei felt very guilty. Her room was on the first floor, while Pei Wu’s room was on the second. Her hearing was not very good, so she had not heard anything that happened last night.
“No, she… she didn’t do it on purpose.” Shang Yuqing could not bear to see Grandma Pei blaming herself so much.
“How about this?” Grandma Pei said. “If you don’t mind this old woman’s room, you can sleep in my room. I’ll change the bedding for you.”
Shang Yuqing smiled and shook her head. “It’s all right, Grandma. It’s not like this happens often anyway. No need to trouble yourself.”
Shang Yuqing was not saying that just to comfort her.
After thinking about it, everything Pei Wu had done last night pointed to one fact.
Pei Wu hated Lu Qianwei, and she also hated Lin Jun. Her hatred toward the two female leads was far from as shallow as Shang Yuqing had imagined. If Pei Wu were truly left alone like this, then one day, if her mind really returned to normal—or if she decided to retaliate—Shang Yuqing did not dare imagine what someone with such an extreme personality would do.
That meant her mission was extremely difficult.
Rather than waiting for that to happen, it would be better to take advantage of this time to change Pei Wu’s way of thinking and cure her mental instability. That way, even if her mind returned to normal one day, at least she would not be trapped by all-consuming hatred.
The image of Pei Wu’s panicked and helpless appearance from last night was still vivid in Shang Yuqing’s mind. So aside from wanting to be reborn herself, she also wanted Pei Wu to become a normal person.
She hoped that before she left this world, Pei Wu would be able to love this world with a kind heart.
She would also treat it as atonement for the original owner’s deeply buried regret.
Seeing that Pei Wu still had not gotten up, Shang Yuqing went to the room to wake her.
Shang Yuqing pulled the curtains open, letting a large sheet of sunlight spill in. The room instantly brightened.
“Close them.” Pei Wu’s muffled voice came from beneath the blanket.
Shang Yuqing walked forward and patted the blanket. “Get up. Grandma already made breakfast.”
Pei Wu did not respond.
Shang Yuqing patiently urged her several times. Pei Wu grew impatient and sat up with a whoosh, staring at her gloomily.
Shang Yuqing smiled. “Get dressed. Do you need me to get your clothes for you?”
Shang Yuqing stood in the bright room, making the strangulation marks on her neck especially obvious. Pei Wu had already forgotten most of what happened last night.
She only remembered that the red marks on Shang Yuqing’s neck were her own masterpiece. Barefoot, she got out of bed and slowly walked up to Shang Yuqing.
“Why aren’t you wearing shoes again? Are you a child?” Shang Yuqing said helplessly.
Pei Wu walked closer in silence and reached toward Shang Yuqing’s neck. Seeming rather intrigued, she smiled faintly. “Very beautiful.”
Shang Yuqing’s face remained calm as she quietly looked at Pei Wu.
Pei Wu’s hand loosely circled Shang Yuqing’s neck. She leaned closer, her eyes drawing near, so close that their breaths mingled.
With the clearest and most beautiful face, she spoke the most vicious words. “The only pity is that I didn’t choke you to death last night.”
“…” Shang Yuqing’s expression turned somewhat ugly.
Pei Wu, however, laughed. Her smile was sickly. “That’s right. That’s exactly the expression. Like you’re looking at dog shit. I like it so much.”
Shang Yuqing’s mental endurance was strong. She had already grown used to Pei Wu’s mad behavior. She only pushed Pei Wu’s hand away. “What a unique aesthetic.”
Then she walked toward the door. “Come down once you’re dressed.”
When Pei Wu saw the door close, leaving her alone in the room, she looked around and suddenly realized that she had woken up in Shang Yuqing’s bed that morning.
…Fuck.
Pei Wu frowned, trying hard to remember what had happened last night. But aside from choking Shang Yuqing’s neck, everything else was blurry.
She only knew that she had an episode again.
That she had once again become a lunatic despised by everyone.
When she thought of Shang Yuqing seeing her in such a wretched state again and again, her irritation became impossible to suppress. She kicked over the stool in front of her.
Annoyed, she raked a hand through her hair, walked to the window, and stared darkly at Shang Yuqing, who was helping Grandma Pei hang clothes in the front yard.
When was this woman leaving?
She was such an eyesore.
